Of course the now dead bicyclist could have also dismounted the bike and walked around the bin on the sidewalk after which could have rode away on the opposite side side.
All she had to do was check her surrounding before changing lanes. I am saddened by the tragedy but cyclists need to be schooled on the rules of the road.

Cyclists in this city feel so entitled that applying the brakes or slowing down or even checking that their surroundings are safe is a foreign concept to them.
@liyan8385 no , your safety and common sense is up to you the individual, you can't expect construction not to have some exemptions , just like emergency vehicles, imagine if they really had to block off whole entire city blocks just for one store owner that wants to do a small renovation , or ban bicycles from the downtown core just because ppl can't handle their own safety.....this is very unfortunate but you can't blame the company for doing their job and trying to make an honest living
Cyclists should need to pass a road test demonstrating they understand the rules of the road, and they should all have license plates to identify them. Cyclists maneuver this city with absolute impunity and ignorance. It needs to stop. R.I.P to the young lady but she is at fault.

Construction companies in Canada can do whatever they want many street they have construction equipment anywhere blocking lanes. They should be made accountable for this yonge lady was killed because a bin was blocking the bike lane. It's a joke what is happening here in Canada with the justice system is broken
So the solution will be more traffic ....close the whole street off each time a buisness needs to do renovations ...then you or any car or truck won't get to share the road ...so any time there's a project at any buisness they should shut down the whole street and create more traffic ......the whole downtown will be permanently shutdown to all bikes and vehicles, only pedestrians, thats basically what you would want to solve this
The problem with driving and cycling is that there is not enough room and traffic is bad.. drivers often can not see bikers in their vehicle and bikers feel that drivers are not paying attention.. the truth is that it is difficult for both alike because there is alot going on around them to pay attention too and its overwhelming .. making safe bike lanes and dividers is the only way to keep bikers safe .. because often the cars are not able to see or be cautious enough.. and bikers who have more view are in a hurry or in bike traffic and unable to make safe stops or get out of the way of oncoming danger . Its accidents waiting to happen and the bike lane being obstructed or blocked is only creating more of a problem . I dont believe drivers intentionaly are not paying attention for bikers. i myself know it is sometimes very difficult. They are moving fast even when traffic is not they come out of no where because they have ability to weave in and out of tight spaces and are often in ur blind spot .. its very dangerous for everyone involved. I believe drivers are cautious and this is every drivers worst fear .. but making it safe for bikers is something we can do to make a difference. Making the way clear is a must definately .

So because of the obstacle in the lane which she would’ve seen way in advance she veered out of the lane into the path of the truck? If I’m driving and I have to cross into another lane because of whatever, the onus is on me to ensure it’s safe to do, if the way isn’t clear I just have to wait behind the obstacle until I can move. If I cross over and cause an accident I’m responsible and at fault. I’m genuinely asking, is it not the same for bikers?
I have no proof that she did what, veer into the path of the truck? The video clearly says “… A 24 yr old woman was killed after she appeared to have veered out of the cycling lane.. to avoid a large waste disposal bin in front of her“. I’m going to assume she would’ve seen it ahead of time if she rode while looking forward. Of course I wasn’t there to see it myself but I’m commenting on what is being reported here. It’s unfortunate a life was lost but we need to be careful when cycling along side 5 ton vehicles. Don’t assume the 5 ton vehicle will always yield to you, so you just have to be vigilant and check your blind spots and try to anticipate what others would do.

I fell bad for the lady , but there's red pylons all around it. Why would she pull into traffic without looking to see it's clear. You have to have your head on a swivel if your riding a bike in Toronto traffic.
"She had to veer into traffic". Sorry, but did her bicycle not have brakes? Was there a reason she couldn't stop? Did she not check to see if there were cars? Im sorry she's dead, but this seems to be carelessness on her part more than the failt of the construction company.
The critique of cyclists is warranted. Cyclists are the most dangerous of all road users. They do not follow traffic rules and do whatever they want/what is convenient for them whenever they want. I see it every day in Montreal and people are simply waking up to the gross display of negligence for traffic laws from cyclists. 🤷♂️
The cyclist was following the law here until someone else broke it and blocked the bike line resulting in her death. Car drivers are by far the most dangerous road users, your point here is completely meritless and insane.
@@RByrne this only highlights the need for having bike lanes, to protect vulnerable road users (cyclists) from vehicles. If the lane wasn’t blocked this wouldn’t have happened.
Although there was an obstacle, as sad as the incident was, this is primarily still her and the trucks fault. The city is tight on space. There should have been at least cones, but this happened during daylight from my understanding.
As a driver and a cyclist, I'm not sure why the rules of the road are not mandatory for cyclists. There is a real problem in this city especially with the media not reporting the entire story. The bike lanes in Toronto are occupied by self centered ignorant so called cyclists. They do not obey any rules and they feel that they are entitled to do anything they want. I have my driver licence as well as 8 bicycles so I know the rules and I know how to be safe. I rode the Bloor bike lane from Yonge to High Park...never again. Toronto cyclists are the most ignorant people on the road. The bike lanes are a danger at any speed. Cyclists need to be educated and in my opinion should have to pass a test in order to be on a road. It takes years for drivers to be allowed on a road in a car. Cyclists are more venerable and should have to show that they are not a danger to themselves as well as others. The e-bikes make the bike lanes a danger to all that use them as well as the pedestrians along side the bike lanes, they constantly jump from road to sidewalk and no tickets are ever issued.
The two things aren't related. Yeah it's wrong to have bins in an active bike lane but to mention that someone died there last month is just sensationalism and trying to get clicks/reads.

@UzumakiNaruto_ they cross the road with their heads down on thier phone. Unreal
I agree, it' a terrible tragedy but if the cyclist had just taken a second to do a shoulder check she would still be alive.
@chrisxl5152 seems to me that Cyclists are allergic to using the brakes... need to save the momentum...rather veer than brake.
I hate it when I’m driving along the highway and two private companies have left a garbage skip right in the middle of it… ohhhh….
I'm not foolish enough to bike in a city, or poison my lungs in a subway. Prayers
You're foolish enough to post comments about your lack of brain power
Simple, she merged into live traffic and didn't safety merge by knowing the surrounding. There are obstacles everywhere in the city and being oblivious is not and excuse. Cyclist need to have insurance and licenses screw these excuse giving lawyers. Hold Cyclist accountable!
I agree with holding cyclists and pedestrians accountable for their own safety, but that doesn't mean drivers don't need to do their part to keep the streets safe as well. If everyone did their own part, there would be alot fewer accidents in the city and elsewhere and there would be alot fewer injuries and deaths.
@@UzumakiNaruto_ Drivers always do their part because a vehicle is a privilege and livelyhood for many. Driver accountability is regulated by laws and insurance and if not followed drivers get screwed while cyclist do what ever the fuck they want. Get a license kid and ull see how it works.
Swerve into Traffic and Blame Someone else for your Bad Driving🤣What a Comedy
Agreed
Yep. She didn't have brakes? How do you not see a dumpster in front of you, and swerve without checking if it's clear?
Remember the woman who got unalived by the turning truck. She was standing on the closest part of sidewalk near the roadway while on the phone as the truck was making a right turn and got taken out by the back tires. The times we are in now people are selfish and ignorant of their surroundings.
Yeah that truck driver should've been paying more attention to his surroundings. He shouldn't be hitting people on the sidewalk.
What about people throwing trash everywhere, can we deport them?
What about people pooping on the beaches let's send them home too
The bill for the junk removal on that bin alone will be more than 1,000$, the message sent will be human life is largely worthless. The bin company could not be bothered to set up some cones for bicyclists or even move the bin over slightly giving space to bike through.
There were warning and cones set up around and before the bin , there's no where else the bin could be placed .....maybe they should close the road for everyone each time a buisness does renovations .....then sit in traffic all around that area given that's the only buisness doing construction.....there might be 2 roads open at a time in all of downtown, it's a bust city construction happens everyday I'm sure that's not the solution....maybe just ban bikes from inner congested cities ???
What about a charge of endangering life?
Did the truck hit the cyclist because the truck entered the bike lane??? No the poor cyclists was not paying attention and left her lane without looking to see that her path was clear before doing so.
Cyclists in this city feel so entitled that applying the brakes or slowing down or even checking that their surroundings are safe is a foreign concept to them.
So the solution will be more traffic ....close the whole street off each time a buisness needs to do renovations
bikes should be banned from all roads period
200???? Someone lost her life and 200???? That’s why they don’t even care to follow the rules.
So the solution will be more traffic ....close the whole street off each time a buisness needs to do renovations
So if there's an open hole in the street and construction and you ride right into it ....its the company's fault???
@@WhocarezWhocarez-nw8ke isn’t that the government’s jurisdiction? Just asking though because I don’t know the answer to that either.
$100 fine max!
Cyclists should need to pass a road test demonstrating they understand the rules of the road, and they should all have license plates to identify them. Cyclists maneuver this city with absolute impunity and ignorance. It needs to stop. R.I.P to the young lady but she is at fault.
if bicycles follow the rules of the road the people would care more. u blow thru reds and stop signs and then cry when u get hit. if u follow the rules then people will care.
i say this as a man who rides motorcycles and bicycles and yes i stop for all reds and stop signs.
Yeah, blame the victim Karen.

What an absolute joke.
If a person kills another person they go to prison, Bylaw charges? So maybe a fine? Two tier justice system for people vs wealthy people.
Owner of the company is responsible since they get the profits.
So if you're driving and I jump out infrot of you , it's your fault???
Where is that bin supposed to be I'm curious on your suggestion
Maybe she should not just go from the bike lane to the car lane in front of a truck 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Road users should obey the law regardless of method of transportation. Just slow the hell down. It is Toronto, gonna take hours to get home anyway. What is the rush.
should be more stiff penalties for this incident. but people need to pay more attention especially the bike rider, you cant just turn into live traffic without looking. entitlement isn’t worth your life
Stiff penalties for what ??? Going to work ? Where do you suggest that bin be placed ???? Should the whole block of road be shut down everytime a buisness needs to do renovations??? What do you suggest?
Maybe ban bicycles from the downtown core because it's too dangerous and not enough room
Bikes... Who enforcing the rules of riding a bike? why helmets aren't by law ( maybe only on streets no at the parks or recreation areas ) just like sit bells in cars, lots of the worst injures are happening in the head when cyclist falls....More education in who has the right of way at every right turn for a car where bikes going straight
law needs to be revamped with hi punshments
Yes. Higher fines for bicyclists. This was totally avoidable if she had been looking where she was going.
Yes ban bicycles from the downtown core
Sloppy company think they can do whatever they want to do, RIP TO THAT LADY. Come to brampham and see how people park in the bicycle lane, it’s not Brampton anymore.
What do you suggest they do???

Doesn't matter , construction is construction, there's no where else to put that bin
You have no proof that she did that
I have no proof that she did what, veer into the path of the truck?
They leave these cones on the 401 too
Yes for your safety, usually when you see those cones it indicates that there is a lane restriction and construction and you should reduce your speed and change lanes when safe to do so .....welcome to Canada hope that helps
Im glad someone has been held accountable . This was not this girls fault. i hope her family sues them it will not make up for their loss . .. but it gives family the right to sue now.. correct me if im wrong . Smfh 200 dollars is insulting . I hope they have the ability to take them to court now.

Smoke and mirrors political BS. Nothing about the person who rode a bicycle into a moving vehicle.
We had less trouble before bike lanes.
Bike's belong on the sidewalk not roads
With an attitude like that you are a danger to society, people who think like you should not be in possession a drivers license!
The cyclist was following the law here until someone else broke it and blocked the bike line resulting in her death. Car drivers are by far the most dangerous road users, your point here is completely meritless and insane.
@pspat101 did she not see the dumpster? She could have stopped and waited. At the very least check if the lane is clear before swinging out.
@@RByrne this only highlights the need for having bike lanes, to protect vulnerable road users (cyclists) from vehicles. If the lane wasn’t blocked this wouldn’t have happened.

Is there any responsibility to the bike rider? Did she check her shoulder I’m sorry for the rider but the logistics working downtown are insane
if the company have the permits, i dont see why they should be liable.
