I can’t listen to this and look at the screen. Whenever I do, I start to sense him moving. And I feel like we’re truly staring back at each other. It terrifies me, but my soul is frozen. He sees right into me.

tbh, I spent the longest time thinking this was fanmade before hearing it used in the later episodes

That droning C note is the audio essence of pure, unadulterated evil

Having never watched twin peaks, this version sounds like the theme when a nation or person turns truly, irredeemably evil

Well, the story of how David Lynch instructed Mr Badalamenti to write Laura's theme paints a different picture.
The overarching motif was made to describe the empty woods of twin peaks with it sycamore trees, while the build ups represent Laura coming into the Forest to meet whoever is playing the music, and lynch specificallytold Badalamenti to make the part happy, but then she goes away, and that is when the music falls and keeps falling until the starting motif is all that's left, with Lynch describing it as getting really sad.
So in this case, I'd say this is the song which describes a people in their darkest hour never being rescued, because the shining star that was meant to bring them out from the darkness never shone.

Any way to find all variations of Laura Palmer's theme? I remember 1 from Richard's house, that stuck to my head.

@@punchforpound2808 This particular track was used at least once or twice in The Return. As for the music, there was plenty in The Return, both from the old series and new compositions from Johnny Jewel, Angelo, Dean Hurley, and David himself. I strongly disagree that the emotional quality of the show was sacrificed, however. There are many moving movements throughout, especially in the final few episodes - but you have to be willing to wait for the full impact of those payoffs. As for entertainment, Lynch has never been out for "entertainment" in his entire career. The only time he was hired to do "entertainment" was Dune, and he hated the experience. ABC wanted "entertainment" out of Twin Peaks and that was part of his reason for abandoning the original show. IMO The Return is closest to the personal vision he's broadcast for decades going back to his student films - feels much closer to Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Fire Walk With Me etc. He's an uncompromising auteur and has never wanted to be bound by the expectations of critics, studios, producers, audiences, or "fans". Works better with some films than others, but I'd rather watch from a director who doesn't feel bound by being expected to provide certain emotions and entertainment.
