  • This video is a rarity on my channel simply because it's one of the only pipeline videos I have which showcases uphand welding techniques. More specifically 7018 vertical up in the 5G horizontal fixed position. Pass sequence was as follows;
    Bead; Vertical down 6010
    Hot-Pass; Vertical down 8010
    Fill And Cap; Vertical up 7018
    Don't ask me why.
    The linear length of the entire weld is 170 inches. It's pretty big pipe!

    We're about to run a 12" line that the mainline will be all downhill but the tie-ins will be uphill. They say the reason is the coating..... Mainline can't coat for 48hrs after weld is complete but tie-ins can be coated the same day with the uphill(7018) procedure.

      My company made pipe for a 700 mile run 12 3/4" .354 wall when they went to test it, it was leaking, so they cut in in half till they got down to about a 12 mile section they knew it was leaking in, then they brought dog sniffing dogs< hahaha I know, and the dogs pin pointed right where the leak was, it was right at the end of the pipe right beside the bevel, it was a pin hole, the reason ultra sonic never caught it was because when they put the probe on it they had to start a few inches in cause the probe wouldn't sit flush at the end, so now every pipe is From end to end, after over a million dollar fuck up.

      Not a problem. I've actually got zero experience with pipe, I've been welding structural stuff for 16 years, but I recently became a CWI. I recalled from the books that when you have 2 guys burning on a pipe the configuration of ground location is critical. The flow of current creates some magnetic effects that screw with the arc. Ive also seen some threads on LINKEDIN about it, its pretty common on some of these new high tech anti corrosion materials they are using for pipe these days.

    Just a curious question ..what is the main reason 90% or better of the welding on pipelines is down-hand ? In school we were taught uphand for just about anything

    • @aj9270
      @aj9270 10 лет назад

      yes I could see that too... if it isn't smooth inside the pig will hang up which would be a real problem . a few years back we had a 30" I believe it was natural gas pipeline installed through our hunting cap property it was really interesting and neat to watch glad i took some pictures

    • @rogerbrandt6678
      @rogerbrandt6678 9 лет назад

      About the pig catching, I work at one of the biggest pipe making companies in the world, when we do line pipe it always has a flat spot on the inside of the bevel, going right around the pipe,so when you put the 2 pieces of pipe together the flat spot which is usually .030 or .060 so those ends would be the only parts touching each other before the weld, so no chance of weld going on the inside of the pipe. Do those pipes have that ledge (flat ends).?

    • @robk5865
      @robk5865 2 года назад +1

      @@rogerbrandt6678 I believe those flats at the bottom of the bevel are there to give a ledge for the fitters to accurately space the pipe sections apart slighty before welding. With that small gap, the first welding pass is an open root weld. They burn a continuous "keyhole" pattern with the arc and fuse those sections together right through to the inside.
      Very little weld shows through in this manner. A .030-.060 thick ledge isn't going to stop the arc from blowing right through. It'll be messy on the inside of the pipe. With an open root weld, it's very clean and with the keyhole pattern, both sides of the pipe are properly fused.

    • @iansmith8944
      @iansmith8944 2 года назад +1

      There are a few reasons that downhill is used on pipelines. The primary reason is speed, 6010 is not low hydrogen so fast speeds and high temps are required to introduce enough heat to allow the majority of hydrogen to diffuse from the weld. That is also why root, hot pass, and cap are all quickly put in without a delay to cool. Another reason is that downhill with 6010 leaves much thinner weld deposits, the cross sections of the beads are flatter and smaller then a fast fill rod. Because of this, the welds tend to fair better when expanding and contracting with heat/cold, as well as better flexibility when under strain from ground movement. Another reason is cost, it’s faster and cheaper to run 6010, since you need it for a root pass anyway and dealing with low hydrogen rods can be a pain.

    • @derekc4919
      @derekc4919 Год назад

      @@rogerbrandt6678 They are called "lands" they are there to give some more meat for the root pass. Most of the time in the field these lands will be dressed up to the welders preference. Also as you could imagine a large portion of welds especially those tht arent mainline, are made on cut pipe so the factory bevel is not a factor, we make our own.

      It depends on if you're working in a shop or in the field, which state you're in and what kind of welding you are doing. The pay isn't as good as some think. In maryland a d1.5 welder, bridge, makes between 28.88/hr in your pocket with another $20/hr retirement to $40/hr in pocket and & $8/hr retirement for scale pay. Obviously with experience and time at a company you can make more. Shop welding starts $18-$20 an hour
