Inigo's quest for his father's killer is one of the most successful subplots in film history because just after Mandy Patinkin took this role, his father died of cancer. In this fight he imagined that this was his chance to beat cancer, to come to terms with his father's death by getting revenge on cancer (The Six-Fingered Man).

The movie is the imagination of the kid the book is being read to. Hence the reason the prince looks that ridiculous. Also makes casting Andre the Giant absolutely perfect. Any kid in the eighties would have thought of him when they heard about a giant.

William Goldman, the author of the book (and screenplay) tried to write a sequel, "Buttercup's Baby," and actually wrote the first chapter (appended to later editions of the book). But in the end he admitted that he couldn't figure out the story. So The Princess Bride stands as a wonderful self-contained achievement.

    1) the cloak on fire is a “holocaust cloak”- a medieval garment that burns very slowly. Slowly enough to give minimal protection from fire.
    2) the actor playing Inigo Montoya is Mandy Patinkin, and yes, he does do Shakespeare. He is more famous for his theater work than his film or tv work, and he is fairly well known for that. He’s done ALOT of Shakespeare, as well as musical theater, and I wish I could find a clip to post here, because he is amazing in everything he does.

"I want to see this guy do Shakespeare" He DID do Shakespeare a few times: He's done Hamlet, Henry IV, and The Tempest Off-Broadway. But if you really want to be impressed, you should hear him sing: Mandy Patinkin can be heard on the Original Broadway Cast albums for Evita (as Che, a role played by Antonio Banderas in the film adaptation, funnily enough) and The Secret Garden, and can be seen in the recording of Sunday in the Park with George and the musical film Yentl.

I gotta say I love how quotable this movie is, but my absolute favorite moment probably has to be the fire swamp exchanges between Wesley and Buttercup.
    "We'll never survive in there!"
"Nonsense, you're only saying that because no one ever has!"
And the moment where he goes
"You know, it's not that bad!" And she just turns slowly in incredulity and stares at him.

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

book trivia! idk if it’s in-world lore or real but allegedly (in the version of the book i read, and i know there’s another one but didn’t read it to be sure) the adapter’s grandpa or father read it to him as a kid and cut off all the boring (for a kid) parts, and as an adult he looked for the book EVERYWHERE only to find it was way longer than he remembered, so he abridged it so it could be enjoyed as he did as a kid. so that’s what the grandpa in the movie is doing with his narration. usually i HATE abridged versions bc i want to KNOW, yk, but this one was really sweet

Absolutely fantastic movie. Love that the original author also wrote the screenplay. The book and movie are very different, and yet somehow the screen adaptation doesn’t come off as bad or cheap imitation. It’s its own thing. And it’s brilliant.
The thing about “the machine” is that it’s REALLY downplayed in the movie. In the book the suction cups are on every inch of his body. His genitals, eyelids, under his eyelids, fingers, finger tips, toes....everywhere.
My favorite moment in the movie is Wesley’s reaction to Buttercup’s suicide attempt: “There’s a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t’would be a pity to damage yours.” This is also the only direct quote from the book that made it to the movie without a single change.

There could *never* be a sequel to this movie. Perfect movies don't get sequels. And if movie execs are smart, they don't get remakes, either. But most movie execs aren't very smart.
Now you have to see This Is Spinal Tap, if you haven't. Same director, a few of the same actors, another cameo from Billy Crystal. And it's hilarious.

@@MoviesinDepth funny story: I went to sleep away camp as a kid, and Thursday was always movie night. When the head counselor announced that one movie night would be The Princess Bride, a bunch of campers and counselors (including me) spontaneously started quoting a bunch of the classic movie lines in unison. Specifically Mawwiage, My name is Inigo Montoya, and Fezzik and Indigo's rhyming game.
It was kind of surreal. And more years ago at this point than I'm willing to admit.

Andre couldn’t fit in the transport buses so they got him a ATV to ride to set and Cary wanted to try it and when he did he broke his foot so when Dread Pirate Roberts was talking to Buttercup and went to lay against a fallen log you can see he has to extend his leg instead of bending it since it’s broken

@Echo Wall: Actually it was actor Cary Elwes' big toe that was broken. VERY painful. Not only did he have to sit down funny in that scene you mentioned, above - but he can also be seen kinda having to lean on his co- star [ the lovely Robin Wright ( as "Buttercup," ) ] as they're running towards the Fire Swamp [ as "Grandpa" ( Peter Falk ) narrates, "Westley and Buttercup raced along the ravine floor..." ] Nope! More like they're reeling like two drunks, because Wright was having to try to help Elwes ( but trying not to let it show too much. )
[ Source: See in: Elwes' excellent recalling-behind-the-scenes-stories about the filming of the movie 'The Princess Bride' book "As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride" ( published 2014, Touchstone - a division of Simon and Schuster. ) ]
