Sort of “I need to be in the closet, and you need a husband to live away from your parents...” But really, a movie this recent shouldn’t have been coy. The real Alan was not only gay, but he was terrified of women, pressing himself into the wall as they walked by.
Of course, he was gay, he even comes out to her in the movie and she tells him she knew. By the way, Turing and Clarke were engaged in real life, too, and later broke it off. So, it seems he was never terrified of her, at least.

I think in that moment it was more a means to an end to keep her there and not a well thought out one. Though since being gay was taboo back then it was not unusuall for a gay man to try and settle down with a women and she would certainly be one of his best options if he did that. However, I don't know if it could have lead to a happy marriage. I believe in history this didn't happen.
