Have you by chance, measured the temperature of the pre-warmed machine water, that exits from the brew head? I have the exact same machine (and in black sesame!) that emits hot water at 170-173 degrees F at the brew head. The Breville instructions, and various coffee blogs, state 200 degrees F is ideal. So, I'm about 25-30 degrees short or cooler than ideal. Breville Support says water temperature IS at 200 degrees while in the PID heating chamber and decreases upon exit, due to multiple ambient conditions. However hard I try to minimize those variables (by pre-warming machine 15 minutes), pre-heating the double-wall glass cup, and using a very accurate ThermoPop digital thermometer, I still get 171-173 degree water at water exit.
I'm beginning to wonder if I'm losing a lot of coffee profiles because of my lower water temperature pulls? I've exchanged machines with Breville Support (They are wonderful and very helpful folks) and only got about a 5 degree increase (to 173 degrees) on my replacement machine. I'm not sure if that is "normal" or if I received another mis-calibrated new machine.
      Thanks in-advanced for your help.

I bought a Breville recently and I don’t regret it. I finally have my cafe quality espresso drinks at home and the cost savings is huge. I was the person that would spend $6+ a day buying lattes at the cafe near my work. That amounts to over $2100 a year. Now I spend about $10 a week on a good bag of freshly roasted coffee and $2 on a gallon of milk a week totaling in about $624 a year and that’s with 2 - 3 8 - 12oz espresso drinks a day. If I only had one a day, the cost would easily be halved. The cost upfront is scary for one of these machines but the yearly savings and daily quality is unmatched.

Having used both, comparing these machines is like comparing a stencil vs drawing free hand. With a semi-automatic espresso machine you have the freedom to do practically everything. Pod systems are for a person who does not want to waste time tuning their grind, exploring different roasts from their local coffee shops or tamping.

That's exactly right. There's no point in comparing two machines in different leagues. And if you're going to be real then the Breville wins just by looking at the concept of espresso. Nespresso just gives you fake espresso or wanna be espresso.

Pod machines are probably the sweat spot in the convenience, cost, taste triangle. I’ve had every contraption known to man to make coffee over the years and finally settled on a nespresso as it makes pretty good coffee quickly and doesn’t require cleaning after every coffee, ok it’s not cheap but I’m happy to pay a little more for the convenience, I like that the pods are fully recyclable, my wife likes that it’s small so doesn’t take up half the kitchen and easy to use so she can make me a coffee whilst making herself a tea.

Ive owned both. My Nespresso was one of the original line machines that used the smaller pods. I think it was having problems heating the water after about a year because it didnt seem to matter what pods I purchased, they were always a little tart and metallic tasting, even with pre-heating the cup with hot water. Learning the Barista Express has been challenging, but worth it.

  • @sahand9669
    @sahand9669 4 года назад +57

What you’re using is a Nespresso Vertuo line, which uses a centrifuge system to pull out the coffee. If you want to do a real comparison you should be doing it with the original line, which uses the 19 Bar pressure system which is appropriate for a shot of espresso. Texture and quality greatly varies amongst the two lines as the original line is made specifically for espresso and lungo, yet the vertuo is aimed at the North American market for a taller, larger typical American cup of coffee.

    • @JoeCiliberto
      @JoeCiliberto 4 года назад +6

Yes, agree. two stories of old line versus new. I've owned both and have the original line at my office (next to my desk). I gave away my virtuoliine I bought when my Saeco Expreila Evo was being repaired(for the third time).
The original Nespresso makes better coffee and from my vantage point has a lot of sources to buy coffee pods. I like the recycle ability of the pods from the old and new lines. One note, some of the original line's pods are plastic, not metal, and not readily set up to crush, clean out the grounds (which make great compost) and able sent off to be recycled.
Agree with the presenter that the crema on the new line is a bit much. Note - not all pods, new style and old are created equal, some have excellent coffee, some, so-so, but none that bad (see Kuerig comment).
I have since had to repair my Saeco the fourth time (flow down valve 3X). As a it is being repaired I bought an older (but new) Royal Pro from Espresso Experts (ask for Wael). The Royal lines that I have owned all lasted ten years without repair.
One more thing if you really like coffee and are pressed for time, do not buy a Kuerig under any circumstances. Terrible coffee, a joke. Get an old line Nespresso.

But the Vertuo line is the more versatile as although the bar code on each pod is set to give the perfect size and strength for 5 sizes, the pods can be reprogrammed to take as much or as little water as you like, and the difference in variety and intensity is excellent with tasting notes.

@Matt To a certain extent, a purist must have their coffee extracted by forcing the water through under pressure. And yes the Vertuo uses centrifugal force. As to which tastes and smells better it is up to the individual. I find the Vertuo Espresso size pods produce an excellent cup, dark and strong with a good crema. I have a Nespresso classic machine alongside, and I find it hard to differentiate except for type of coffee used. I love coffee for flavour, hate 'American style' coffee but above all want my fix quick and clean without all the faff of grinding, weighing, calculating time of flow, and having to clean up stray grains all over the worktop and a messy portafilter. And above all the time to get a decent coffee in the cup. Plus beans go stale. It only takes 1 of the 45 or so beans required for an Espresso to be dodgy to ruin the whole coffee.
Incidentally I live in Portugal where coffee is like football - a religion, and the Nespresso company is very widespread and well followed. Nespresso PT has not imported the Vertuo line, partly because they feel there is no market for non-Espresso coffee. I have mine and regular deliveries of capsules sent from UK.
Because it is worth it for the versatility.

  • @Erislon

having owned both vertuo and inissia lines from nespresso, the vertuo is not the machine you want to compare to an espresso machine. vertuo spins the pod and whips the oils...this causes that foam you found. if you want a true creama from their machine you need to use their original line which only makes espresso. Vertuo is aimed to pull in the Keurig users.

I enjoyed your video, it should be stated how old the coffee is in your Breville. You can argue that the Nespresso is not (fake espresso) because it is made with pressure. The pressure is generated via centrifugal force rather than packing the puck.

The barista express is a good rugger machine. At work we have at least 5 of these spread around a couple of buildings. My group had the first one, possibly 4-5 years old at this point, and it gets used at least 10 times each day and isn't well take care of. I run simple cleaning cycles on it when the light turns on, and I think it might have had one single deep clean done on it. As far as I know all the ones we have run great. We got another one last summer that we had issues dialing in. We used the double wall on that one until they were both lost in the trash. After I deep cycle cleaned it we were finally able to pull good shots out of it with the normal basket.

Preface: You don't have to justify your purchase. If it matches what you want right now, just be happy.
That said, if sustainability is really important to you nespresso isn't it. If quality is really important to you, a pod is isn't it. You simply don't get fresh ground coffee in pods. You can get close, sure, but it's not comperable to going to a local roastery and sourcing your own fresh roast on a weekly basis. Now, if you said the above because you feel like you have to explain yourself to the elitists who frown on your nespresso while you just don't feel you have the time to invest in becoming an expert in using a non-pod machine - that's completely understandable.
Final point: the initial learning curve can be frustrating but the consistency will come and with it a sense of pride that you're competent in a new skill while being able to actually enjoy near-uncompromised quality and much better sustainability by using local small businesses and being able to ask where & how they source their supply.
I'm still learning myself and do still "waste" a shot on occasion, but I've found myself enjoying the ritual of setting out my tools, taking care in controlling the fineness & amount of grind, applying the right amount of pressure on the tamper, experimenting with drip speeds and finding the sweet spot to get the milk to froth just right. I will admit I drink less coffee now :) but feel like I enjoy each cup more. Especially on mornings when I'm really not in the mood for anything other than to press a damn button and get a good coffee without having to do a song and dance for it first. Seems like those are the ones when I end up happiest I had no other options, no "easy way out", just the realisation that I desperately need a coffee and there's only one way to get it xD

I used nespresso for many years at home. 3 or 4 years ago, I switched to a portafilter-machine (and a separate grinder).
    I would NEVER go back.
An espresso machine makes a REAL espresso - something that, if drunk, will rip your heart out and take it to a sunny morning in italy.
Especially if you use a E61 brewing head machine - made completely out of chroma, and with a little lever to pull the shot (but it's not a lever machine...)
and a huge valve, the machine is sparkling in the morning sun...
The entire process of espresso making is just gorgious, you see the coffee beans, you see the power, you touch it, you carefully distribute it.
You can smell, see, touch the coffee.
And you can use virtually ANY coffee. You like 100% robusta? No problem with an espresso machine. You like southern-italian style espresso with 50% robusta and very dark roast? No problem. You wanna go for a hipstery 100% single origin super sour arabica? still no problem. Nespresso, on the other hand, is focusing on the middle european mass market (at least here in europe). Even if they do sometimes provide a real specialty, often its time-limited.
    Is Nespresso bad?
No, not at all. In our office we had a very bad capsule system. I replaced it with my old nespresso machine. The taste is way better.
In the office there is no time for portafilter espresso. Espresso, real espresso, is something you drink at home, or in a bar. Not at work (just my personal opinion).
No, nespresso provides with a decent taste, it's not really espresso but a good tasting coffee product. And without the entire process of espresso preparation (especially the cleaning).

Each has it own use at particular times (i.e. - in a hurry, or do you want some latte art?). Given the cost of a Pixie, it's really realistic to own both. If possible, I'd perhaps edit the video to include cleaning out the portafilter on the Breville to show what's involved with that as that is certainly part of using the machine that takes time (should likely also mention a realistic preheat time to pull optimal shot for the Breville-and does it have a auto-on timer like the Dual Boiler?). Just my 2 cents...thanks!

Bought the Nespresso vertuo plus and liked the convenience of brewing a coffee in a short time, and also different sizes. My purchase was in Dec 2019 and with two months the machine leaked, called their customer support and went through a trouble shooting process, didn’t fix the leak. Returned the Nespresso coffee machine, to Macy’s and they exchange the machine. The replacement machine leaked after using it for 2 1/2 months, not satisfied with their product. Nespresso does support repairs at no cost also they supply free shipping, the customer service appears to be ok, will wait and see if the repair will last? Right now I am using a espresso machine and has been working for many years without problems.

Thanks for the video. Interesting comparrison. To be fair, I do feel it’s comparing apples and zebras having owned (still own actually) both machines. Nespresso is a REALLY high quality freeze dried coffee - the Vertuo machine is even better. The Breville (or Sage in the UK) is a prosumer barrister machine. The pull on a shot with a proper machine should be about 27 seconds and contain circa 18g of coffee. You can pull a Nespresso pod 100 times and it will always taste the same, which is great, but with the Breville (Sage) and most other pro type machines, you can make really decent cuppas. You know this and in fairness, 122k views at the time of viewing - fair play to you. I feel (and not a coffee snob, just know what I like) if you’re not sure which of these machines you should go for, you want Nespresso. If you are prepared to faff about a bit, you may wish to learn to pull them propertly. They are proper take away coffee Starbucks / Costa / Nero quality and I feel better. Good luck whichever you go for.

If you got Starbucks quality from a Breville then it would be a disappointment! The whole idea of making home coffee is to avoid the £3 bucket of brown sludge. Nespresso is easily the most consistent way to get good coffee to the exact strength and flavour you want. The amount of liquid pushed through the coffee is programmable on both Vertuo and classic machines, and you can have a variety of capsules on standby, whereas if you had to buy several varieties of beans and roasts for the Breville, not only would you have to consider the cost, but also the time open coffee stays fresh and the extra trouble of changing beans in the grinder. And with my Nespresso machines, I rarely get a roasting from my wife for strewing soggy grounds and powder all over her kitchen surfaces.
As of now there are over 25 varieties of capsules in both Classic and Vertuo ranges, from all over the world of different intensities, and aromatic principles. The choice is yours!

Love your review. I own several Nespresso machines and I agree about the crema I think you’re not comparing apples to apples. The Vertuo produces its crema by a centrifuge like system. The original line produces a pure pressure extraction crema with a micro bubble. So the result would be closer to your Breville. Most importantly the Breville will produce a superior result. Better boiler and pressure system. Grind control and the ability to control steam. And honestly what’s another 40 to 60 seconds for a better cup. For me the Nespresso Creatista is the closest to the Breville but I went this route because of time and cleanup in the morning. If I had more time I would love the coffee ritual of using the Breville. But great content you have found a new subscriber. Thank you.

What beans are you buying for 10 cents a shot? In a 12oz bag you’re gonna get what? Maybe 20 shots? Or less depending on your dose (not to mention how much you waste dialing in). In my experience, any specialty coffee is going to be about $20 a bag so that works out to $1 per shot. Just did a quick search and even amazon brand beans (which I have to imagine are not very good) cost $6.50 for a bag which would be 30-40 cents per shot, depending on your dose.
Of course you’re going to get way better coffee from a proper espresso machine and there’s a lot less waste but I don’t think you’re necessarily saving money

$0.10 per shot on the Breville? How are you managing that? 18g to 20g in the basket means you're getting 17 or 18 espresso shots per bag of 340g coffee. Given good quality coffee costs $17-22 per bag here in Canada you are talking $1 to $1.30 per shot. Now that is with GOOD fresh locally roasted single origin coffee rather than the trash you are going to get in a pod. So...maybe like for like you are onto something here actually...

This nespresso machine spins the pods that’s why the foam is diffident. You should compare with the original line which is a pressurized system.

  • @Todd.T
    @Todd.T 4 года назад +8

Bottom line. Crema comes from the CO2 emitted from a freshly ground bean and the fake crema is machine/pressure generated foam. Real espresso is creamier and more flavourful. A Nespresso is more convenient, but call it what it is. A regular small pod Nespresso has better taste than the version.
The pressure gauge isn't as important as a temperature gauge. Low temp = sour. High temp = burnt. You can see if the grind is too fine the machine will increase it's temperature and if it is too coarse, it will lower its temperature. I've used a machine for a decade with no gauges and added a PID which shows the temperature and can tell you temperatures ore very important. I could have great pressure and be burning the crap out of the coffee.
My Rocket Giotto has both temperature and pressure gauges. I can turn the machine on and immediately pull a shot at great pressures, but the temp is low so the shot sucks. Without a pressure gauge, you can use time and amount of liquid to see if the shot is good/bad. Without a temp gauge, and a pressure gauge you can nail the amount of liquid per time and have proper pressure, but the shot can still be sour or burnt.

You can buy aftermarket stainless steel reusable cups for the Nespresso, and they have their free recycling program. They provide a bag, and you just mail them in. I must admit the Breville is better for someone willing to take the time. However, the Nespresso has a place too. I allow others to use my Nespresso at work. I wouldn’t trust anyone with my Breville. Black Clover 100% I’ve had a Nespresso machine for 3 years now and I’m looking to switch back to manual. I spend $850 a YEAR on nespresso pods. With everything going on in the world I’d like to keep that money. Lol so I’m investing in a manual machine (greater upfront cost, but cheaper in the long run)

@@HM-pw8it yup and your choices are also very limited. If you're tight on budget then you can literally half the cost of the beans by buying cheap supermarket ones rather than fresh roasted from a cafe. If you're not then you can upgrade the coffee further by upgrading the beans. Nespresso is very limiting imo.

I look at these coffee machines as buying between consistency and variability. With Nespresso you get consistency once you've found your magic combination of pods to go along with milk/ spices/sugars you add afterwards. So long as you use the pod and press that same button; it'll be a consistent flavour of espresso. Now consistency doesn't mean quality just means you get that taste profile you're accustomed to every time you press that button (obviously descaling, fresh water, maintenance still has to be done regularly). With a manual espresso machine like the Breville in this case you get variability and with variability comes a lot of control for the user. Temp settings, tamping pressure, grind settings, bean age for oils, amount of ground beans, water type, pulling pressure, pulling time are all readily available to the user to control. You'll get far more inconsistent shots but you may pull some truly mouth watering shots of the highest quality ... with experience you improve the odds of pulling good shots instead of bad ones. The other considerations I think are important like cost and convenience. I think a bachelor or a couple who don't entertain guests often could withstand the inconvenience of the Breville like system, but a bachelor or a couple who entertain guests weekly probably want a fast pod like system because it is convenient.
I have a Breville Ikon for espresso's and cap's but use a coffee machine for my families coffee needs ... but I also use an old school Keurig with a reusable pod that I can make coffee just for me since the big coffee machine is better suited to like 4-6 people who want to drink coffee.

If you want real espresso then you need the Barista Express. Then if you're lazy and just want an easy cup of something resembling espresso then you get the Nespresso. If you start with a pod then there's no discussion, you're just fooling yourself. That's not espresso.

There's no comparison for me, the BE produces much better coffee, although takes a bit longer & there is a certain amount of skill involved. For me this is not a problem as I enjoyed learning how to be a home barista... In my opinion, I have better coffee at home than all the likes of Costa, Starbucks et al

Well that's actually incorrect because with the Breville Expresso is a lot more involved and that means time. time is money you have to also include the time it takes to clean up it probably takes you 10 times as long as it does with Nespresso because of the pod system.

I agree, the crema is a bit overrated. I prefer to fold the crema I get from the nespresso and it fixes every issue I had with it. I prefer the simplicity of the nespresso and oddly enough, it costed me a lot less for the nespresso machine.

Work out to $0.10/cup on your Breville? I don't use expensive coffee beans it works out to be US$0.20/cup that's optimistic for me.

I use Breville at night or during the weekend. It takes more time to prepare a good espresso. Usually we use Francis X1 with illy iperespresso capsule, very close to brasta. Other way, should also think about cost of maintenance. The fee also increases with the value of the coffee machine. I don't regret to have my Breville.

A dollar a pod?! It's more around ¢0.50 per pod. And depending on the coffee beans you buy, even those can get a little expresive. Yes, beans will almost always be cheaper, but it's not that big of a gap between them, unless you buy cheaper/better value coffee.
Indeed, you have to pay more for convenience...

I’m seeing Saeco and Phillips superautomatic machines on sale for less than the breville in the video. What are the disadvantages to them? Are they less reliable? The idea of putting beans and water into a machine and getting a great shot sounds amazing. Also the speed to make multiple drinks is a big plus for me as I have 3 coffee drinkers in my house and we have parties often where people want espresso.
