I feel like this video didn’t dive into Vietnam’s run at the 2018 u23 afc championship as much as it should. Then again that could be a completely separate story and video just for how amazing it was. It marked the beginning and hope of a golden generation. All the unbelievable upsets, (don’t forget the background to this story is Vietnam was supposed to be completely outmatched by everybody. And to make it worse we’re in a group with South Korea and Australia.) but not even the upsets themselves but just the way these upsets happened (last minute goals, comebacks, penalties), as well as a heartbreak ending in the last minutes of extra time in the final..with heavy snow falling..something some of the players haven’t even witnessed in their lives..it’s probably the most emotional and greatest story in Vietnamese football history no debate. It could be made into a movie, And probably one of the best footballing stories in general but it’s not talked about because 1, it’s only an under 23 tournament and 2. It’s the AFC

    • @Maqwell
      @Maqwell  3 года назад +57

Yeah I absolutely wanted to talk more about the feats of that U23 side but it just woulda added another 5-7 mins to the video. But it really is such an underrated and captivating story. Maybe I do a video specially on that story, because I’d absolutely love to do that

rewind a little bit to just a few months before the run, the same Vietnam squad was eliminated in SEA Games after being bashed by Thailand 3-0, everyone thought this generation was done, I even remember that there were a quote from someone saying that "we are not that good, we just thought we were", every Vietnamese football fan was losing hope. Park came to Vietnam NT in suspicion, fans believed that his dynasty would end soon, that he won't be able to do anything. Even after Park and the boys beat Thailand 2-1 in M150 Cup, we still think that it was just luck, that Thailand is not even care about that friendly tournament. The AFC U23 Championship 2018 began in January and the 2-1 defeat against S.Korea at the first match did not help drawing more attention to the team.
And then it happened, Vietnam beat Australia 1-0 and draw Syria 0-0 to advanced to knock-out stage, and then beat Iraq on penalty shout-out in one of the most thrilling match of the tournament. People started watching the tournament, cheering like the SEA Games incidents few months ago never happened. In the semi-final Vietnam faced Qatar, one of the favourites with many talents preparing for World Cup 2022, many of them were key players in the Qatari squad winning Asian Cup a year later and advanced to Gold Cup 2021 only to lose to the eventual champions USA. The game was held in a work day, but actually not, because everything was stop so people can watch the match, including works, study, even funerals and weddings, girls who had never watched football before also waited for it like they were hardcore fans. It was another thrilling match where 3 goals were scored within the last 10m to bring the match to extra time and penalty shoutout, where Vietnam beat Qatar to go to the final. The whole nation went crazy, celebration broke out everywhere in the country (I remembered seeing my super serious 60 yrs old teacher running around the school hall, shouting and waving the national flag like a teenager, and then got injured), the party started in around 6pm after the match, all the way to the next morning. Then, the final, people gathering in the city center and the national stadium, in front of giant screen, creating red seas of peoples. Everything was stopped one more time, schools and works became giant fanzones, 50% of the news on TV was just about the final. The match was held in a condition that almost could not be worse for Vietnamese players, it was snow, something that most Vietnamese players saw for the first time in their lives, while their opponents, Uzbekistan, were too used to this kind of weather. Uzbekistan took the lead, but then Quang Hải scored a brilliant free-kick to equalize for Vietnam, the goal later was named "Cầu Vồng Tuyết" ("rainbow in snow") and became one of his most iconic moments in Vietnam's jersey. The game went into extra time, and in the dying minute, when everyone thought Vietnam would go to another penalty shout-out, Uzbekistan scored. Many fans broke into tears, it was raining in Hanoi, but many still stayed on the streets, singing Vietnamese patriotic songs, waving their flags.
We started the tournament expecting to be thrashed by stronger teams, and ended up being the runner-up. The teams landed on Hanoi 2 days later and people went to street and welcomed them like they had won the World Cup, the Prime Minister gave the team medals. The team and fans went from the darkness of shame after SEA Games, to the paradise of happiness in like 5 months. Hope and trust of Vietnamese fans was lit up once again. The team later became the key of the senior team and went on to achieve more and more success to allow their fans to dream bigger and bigger.

That was definitely one of the best underdog stories in football and sports, it’s a shame it doesn’t get much attention outside of Vietnam or Southeast Asia but it’s an under 23 tournament and football in asia doesn’t really make the news internationally so you can see why.
I would LOVE to see a movie made about this. It really is a great story.
-you can start with some of the player backgrounds and how there were many players growing up poor
      - those generation of players going through the academy ranks to the youth national teams
-meanwhile Vietnamese football struggles and the senior and u23 failures
      - these players playing for vietnam in the 2016 AFC u19 championship..reaching the semi finals and qualifying for the 2017 U20 World Cup, vietnams first World Cup ever in any age group.
      - the u20 World Cup and Vietnam gaining a point.
-the 2017 Seagames failure 3-0 thrashing against Thailand
      - after the failure the new hiring of coach park hang seo to the u23 (and senior) team and the skepticism against him
-the friendly tournament before the 2018 afc u23 championship, vietnams rematch with Thailand, with coach park leading them to a 2-1 win. And in that same friendly tournament…vietnam faced Uzbekistan…..coincidentally foreshadowing the final in few months time…
      - the main part of vietnams low expectation and underdog story with the new generation of players in the 2018 afc u23 tournament and all its matches. I think every single match was exciting and emotional in this tournament. Even the 0-0 hard defending draw against Syria
-the Vietnamese support throughout the whole country during the tournament
-the players entering the final in a blizzard with some witnessing snow for the first time in their life. Playing against Uzbekistan a team who has played in and are used to snow. (Shame on AFC that this match went on. There was an hour halftime delay too)
-quang hais “rainbow in the snow” free kick goal to tie 1-1
-Vietnam losing in the final minute of extra time missing out on a 3rd straight penalty shootout
-heartbreak and crying across the country and the players in the trophy ceremony
-the players returning to Vietnam being treated like heroes, traveling on the bus parading and waving to millions of fans following them behind as they go across the bridge. The hope for Vietnamese football revived. A hope for a golden generation. They lost, but it’s as if they won.
I hope some director picks this up, because it is a very inspiring emotional story! If this is made into a movie it would be so awesome if done correctly. Some of the events throughout and in this miracle run are seriously just too perfect for a football movie! And they’re all real. But forget movie, I just gave maqwell all the details if he actually does do a video on this singular story 😂.

As Vietnamese I can say he is honest player who never pretending to claim a foul before. What actually happen is he did got a tackled but he could manage to hold the balance. One moment flashback when fan blame him for tackled in box several times last match but not trying to claim a foul, him despite being a sharp shooter in club but have no goal in nattional team make he think: hold on I've got fouled, just roll like it should be. Fast move of Camera in this situation capture only moment after flashback make it really fake. That's why he claim it's real. Ref. may witness make it decision on his own. Even in asean vff is not a rich federation to buy ref( even fifa ref).

North in 1979). Although these battles did not last long, they caused losses and affected socio-economic development plans. Not only that, hostile forces fought day and night, and there were many plots to riot, overthrow, incite, and divide the nation, all with the support of reactionary external forces. :v

This was so well done. I grew up in a neighborhood that was mostly Vietnamese and there always love for football so it’s nice to see that there is a promising and competitive team to support now. It’s also very interesting how conflicts, wars, and politics have shaped football in certain countries and regions. I think Vietnam is catching up from the division there was before. I think a video on the history of the Hungarian national team would be a good shout. I know you touched on it a bit in the video in the build up to the Euros but they were a quality and influential side from around the 1940’s-1970’s and I haven’t seen much about their history.

Alfred Riedl actually rejuvenated the Indonesian team (during which the FA had just come out of a lengthy suspension from fifa) to get to the final of AFF cup in 2016 after almost being eliminated in the group stage... And fell short to, *you guessed it* , the familiar foe, Thailand.
And thus, the bloody AFF cup is still illusive to us. Welp.
It was a really a surreal moment seeing them on tv at that time though...
Ruhe in Frieden, Alfred Riedl :'(
oh and props for vietnam for representing SEA in the final round of the wcq :)

And now we are going to be 2nd best for the 6th time in 13 tournaments. The pain never ends and will probably never end, unless those old and idiotic bigots that are ruling the federation realize the near-irreversible damage that they have caused and step down for good.
Ps. That lengthy suspension was not lengthy at all. It was only a 1-year suspension

    • @pesvietnam2174

Vietnam actually played curaçao in a friendly tournament in 2019 before the WCQ started. (Kings cup Thailand) They drew on 90 minutes 1-1 and curaçao won on penalties in the final. See friendlies are something that is viewed as very good for countries except for apparently Vietnam, because they don’t do it often, unless they are invited to a friendly tournament. when they do international friendlies, it’s against a weak opponent to win. Vietnams most recent friendly was against 150 ranked Afghanistan which they won easily. They had an offer from the Indian federation only a few rank lower than Vietnam for a friendly, but opted for Afghanistan instead. Wtf?

That Van Toan penalty was an absolute joke, but I don't think I've heard or read any Vietnamese fans claim that it was anything other than a blatant foul. The local media certainly did what they could to further that narrative. The Vietnamese support for the team is absolute. That said, I can find plenty of horrendous penalty calls that have gone against Vietnam.
