Gareth Southgate has the rarest talent of producing the worst possible football with the best possible bunch of players. I have been watching his England teams ever since he took over. Here is a summery how his teams play - from a football non-pundit. 1. None of his players run, change position or create space while passing. They all stand still, except (sometimes) the one with the ball. 2. Four or five defenders aimlessly pass between each other, thereby driving up possession stats. 3. When eventually they pass the ball to a midfielder, nothing changes . As soon the midfielders see an oncoming opposition player, they pass back to defenders or better still - the goalkeeper. Now Go back to no 2. 4. In case of the other teams - you’ll see one or two back passes and the third player moves the ball forward, and the whole team runs forward. In the England team - it is banned. 5. The England players almost never win one-to-one battles for the ball, or regain possession- which they (are forced to) do for their clubs. 6. Southgate is always green with envy for other managers. So he wants to show off his ‘originality’ by playing players out of their positions and just hopes for something to happen. When it doesn’t work, he has pre - rehearsed answers ready for the Press . I am waiting for the day the England team wins freedom from this man.

@MCRISBLUE Sorry, I obviously wasn't up to speed with the rules. Didn't know that you're not allowed to criticise someone without doing a better job yourself. I take back everything I said about Fred West.
just look at Austria, no where near a talented squad but no how to play as a team and has a game plan, knows when to press as a team ect thats all down to the manager
Somehow Southgate has the best record of any England manager since 1966, so he must be doing something right. It's not pretty to watch, but his team keeps possession and defends very well, which is crucial in international tournaments played in the heat of summer. Our traditional style of playing has been our downfall in every tournament I've ever watched, so playing possession football is not a bad thing. That being said, last night was like watching paint dry and his substitutions didn't come soon enough. It's OK to adopt a cautious possession football approach, but it is very one paced and predictable at times and very easy to defend against. They just need to mix things up a little bit more. Even a cross into the box from deep occasionally in the hope of a knockdown or a poor clearance just to try and make something happen wouldn't go amiss. It just doesn't happen and England don't start playing or trying to force anything until they have stunk the place out and annoyed the fans or gone behind. If Southgate was a snooker player every shot would be a safety shot. He won't win anything without being more positive and introducing some variety and width into our play. Everything is going through the middle at a snail's pace.
I dont know how much of it is Southgate, as a kid you are taught to pass and move, support the man on the ball and provide him options, I never realised "moving" was a tactical instruction.
You do this to yourselves every single time. The English media build it up and create so much hype and expectation that the team just can't match. Then when the team doesn't perform you (the media) turn on the team which leads to frustration and anger from the fans. Well done.
Joe Gomez played 19 games at LB for Liverpool this season. He can play as an attacking LB. What was the purpose of bringing him if you have no plans of using him?
It's very clear the players are not happy. That's because of Southgates tactics and his Whole Euro Squad Selection. Players know he is clueless and the fans do by his squad selection.
Same Same Same England the busiest player on the pitch was the Keeper so many back passes from the back 4, far too negative, just no creative play at all.

Shaw must be Southgate's love child. Gabby is spot on with the left back situation. Southgate is a laughing stock. What has he learned in all these friendlies they had? Watkins and Palmer must be looking on from the bench in disbelief.
Oh i love that heading about the feeling of the fans as its is mutual, not just England but basically most games, same type of soccor, more back passes then forward passes leaving the strikers like zombies as they are also nowadays getting into that habbit by moving more backwards due to todays COLLEDGE COACHES woth all their fancy formations and techniques.Someone even made a comment that soccer is not about entertainment, just shows with such mindset i will definitely try my best to change to somethin else by getting good entertainment because that is what any fan in their right mind is seeking for, good quality entertainment ,WIN OR LOSE.
Southgate stated in his brief interview following the game, that he was surprised at the reaction as none of the other qualifying teams had faced such a response. He fails to appreciate that hard working folks pay lots of money to follow England and to have to witness the so called strong attack only score 2 goals in 3 games (8 of the 12 teams who have qualified have outscored England, whilst the other 3 have equalled the goal tally). Maybe by way of an apology, he should refund the ticket costs to each fan as he clearly has no regard for the folks funding this pathetic English team (he is on £5 million per year for incompetent management). England had Bellingham, Saka, Foden, Kane, Rice, and Gallagher all start games in either midfield or up front and they seem incapable of working as a unit or indeed incapable of putting any effort in. If you listen to the games on the radio, you could be forgiven for thinking Kane has been omitted
Gabby's been spot on with everything he's said besides the Saka point, he's been useless and shouldn't be starting. Palmer has done more in little time than Saka has on that flank.

Secondly kane, fowden, trent, trippier are all passengers at this level kane out of shape, fowden tactically inept in man city its peps brain and fowdens body, trent is third right back at best, trips hasnt got a left foot always cuts back. Summary if you cant get nine points in this group you’re not good enough as a manager or team. League Two or One manager at best!
I think some consideration should be given to the fact that England's group has been an incredibly negative football playing group evidenced by the lack of goals. The teams England have played have employed incredibly negative tactics sitting back. England's defence has been rarely troubled in truth. Whilst it doesn't completely excuse England's performances I do wonder if England would perform better against teams more willing to attack and play a more open game.
Players secretly cant wait to get knocked out of the euros. Sorry to tell you lads but playing for England is basically a Job of sportsmen showing their character and representing their country to the world. The football is a bonus in the FA's eyes. I would make a bet Kane has had more media coaching, than positional training on the practice field.
Southgate.... Brought in by the FA with no thought given to his competency in carrying the team forward. As always the FA choose a manager because of what he says rather than what he can do.
Can't stand the bloke but he's bang on with what he says.. Also what is the point of having all these very good players in the squad and not using them. No wonder White refused to be part of it😊
Harry kane is clearly still getting over his back injury and Ollie Watkins has had a really good season ......dont understand how he hasnt been given a chance to be a sub at least
How can Foden or Saka dribble pass the full backs when there's no space around them or teammate support to do so? Look at Spain or Germany: they manage through their system to either stretch the opposite back line creating space or simply commiting more players forward in the opposite box for support. It requires to take risk. England is almost constantly having 4 players not actively engage in attack to stop counters, playing the most boring and ridiculously safest football ever and you're expecting 6 players to dribble pass 10 well organise, disciplined and physically strong opponents to score every game. Even prime Lionel Messi would struggle in this system. They are not playing to win, they're playing to not lost.
even in the last minute agains denmark - literally seconds on the click and we have it ouyside their box and then knock it backwards to 'keep possession' scared football thats why we need Gordon and Palmer who are fully frustrated at this point and want to get stuck in
Regardless of the system. Hasn't selected the best 26 and the starting 11 minus Saka and Gúehi who have rarely put a foot wrong but have put the work in. England players that CAN'T make the transition to international level. Remember our so-called world class players are actually playing alongside world class players that made them look better than they really are.
I honestly reckon that very few of the current squad want to show a spirit of risk and adventure. They look more like automatons playing to a rigid pre-planned format. Dull, uninspiring, and all too predictable is what I witnessed.
SINCE ENGLAND WON THE WORLD CUP IN 1966 THESE ARE THE EUROPEAN TEAMS WHO HAVE WON A MAJOR TOURNAMENT GREECE, DENMARK, CZECH REPUBLIC, NETHERLANDS, GERMANY 7, ITALY 6, FRANCE 4, SPAIN 3, WE ARE THE WORST BIG FOOTBALLING COUNTRY IN THE WORLD UTTER USELESS, LAUGHING STOCK OF THE WORLD
Finally! an england player/fan telling it like it is, the only difference between them and us (Scotland) is they qualified for the knockout stages. Lets face it, both teams are rotten, no thanks to dinosaur managers who insist on playing boring, defensive football, and Ally saying earlier in the week that Steve Clarke should keep his job is just a bonkers idea.
Paid £300 quid for 2 tickets to that garbage last night, fortunately I live only 2 hours away so travel costs were low, imagine coming all the way from England, taking time off work etc🤷♂️ Only saving Grace was we stopped watching the garbage and had a good sing, the atmosphere was fantastic.

Ally's line up works for me👍
I think some consideration should be given to the fact that England's group has been an incredibly negative football playing group evidenced by the lack of goals. The teams England have played have employed incredibly negative tactics sitting back. England's defence has been rarely troubled in truth. Whilst it doesn't completely excuse England's performances I do wonder if England would perform better against teams more willing to attack and play a more open game.
David Moyes mk2
gabby is bang on with everything he said yes get southgate a taxi now
100% Gabby is right.
Somebody representing the fans! 🏴🏴🏴
There is something about these Euros that has brought out something in Gabby and turned him in to a half decent pundit. I don't know what it is.
Imagine if England had a slightly difficult group
Can't stand the bloke but he's bang on with what he says.. Also what is the point of having all these very good players in the squad and not using them. No wonder White refused to be part of it😊
Harry kane is clearly still getting over his back injury and Ollie Watkins has had a really good season ......dont understand how he hasnt been given a chance to be a sub at least
1 one performance like that and we are out
Yep, at knockout stages- we should be "fined tuned" by now with all your problems "ironed out"
Let's be honest people.. A team of Mainoo Wharton Foden
Palmer Gordan Watkins would probably be more exciting and dynamic
It absolutely would and last night was the time to do it.
tre - they arent scared and cautious, they are reckless. ive said it before give me cool heads at the back and reckless at the front
Gabby for the job
Saka is a good club player but isn’t really the right fit for the international squad
We played 10 david battys all tournament backwards pass after backwards pass 😅
even in the last minute agains denmark - literally seconds on the click and we have it ouyside their box and then knock it backwards to 'keep possession'
scared football thats why we need Gordon and Palmer who are fully frustrated at this point and want to get stuck in
Southgate out now
Couldn’t agree more with Gabby 🤝
The keir stammer of football
Gabby gets loads of hate for me HE AlWAYS SPEAKS THE TRUTH do people not like the TRUTH🤔🤔🤔

Play the Dutch on Sunday, get home for tea on Monday
Regardless of the system.
Hasn't selected the best 26 and the starting 11 minus Saka and Gúehi who have rarely put a foot wrong but have put the work in.
England players that CAN'T make the transition to international level. Remember our so-called world class players are actually playing alongside world class players that made them look better than they really are.
I honestly reckon that very few of the current squad want to show a spirit of risk and adventure. They look more like automatons playing to a rigid pre-planned format. Dull, uninspiring, and all too predictable is what I witnessed.
SINCE ENGLAND WON THE WORLD CUP IN 1966 THESE ARE THE EUROPEAN TEAMS WHO HAVE WON A MAJOR TOURNAMENT
GREECE, DENMARK, CZECH REPUBLIC, NETHERLANDS, GERMANY 7, ITALY 6, FRANCE 4, SPAIN 3,
WE ARE THE WORST BIG FOOTBALLING COUNTRY IN THE WORLD UTTER USELESS, LAUGHING STOCK OF THE WORLD
Finally! an england player/fan telling it like it is, the only difference between them and us (Scotland) is they qualified for the knockout stages. Lets face it, both teams are rotten, no thanks to dinosaur managers who insist on playing boring, defensive football, and Ally saying earlier in the week that Steve Clarke should keep his job is just a bonkers idea.
Paid £300 quid for 2 tickets to that garbage last night, fortunately I live only 2 hours away so travel costs were low, imagine coming all the way from England, taking time off work etc🤷♂️
Only saving Grace was we stopped watching the garbage and had a good sing, the atmosphere was fantastic.
You know its gone wrong when people have to agree with Gabby.
Hope the quality improves
Thank you Gabby, Ty Mitchell has been class for two years. Not even a sniff of a chance. Same with Chilwell and Reece James, James Ward Prowse, jack Grealish. All should be in that squad.
Gabby is completely right
If Southgate was Clarke Kent he'd only change to Superman to look at himself in the mirror.
Everybody’s tired at this stage. Stop the excuses.
I just want to make sure I understand this...people still believe the hype around the English players? Are you that ignorant?
There is nothing worse than the players and manager applauding the fans after an abysmal game. It's like being thanked for your patience after waiting 90 minutes when there's nothing you can do.
For the first time EVER.. I agree with Gabby..
have I entered the upside down?
Imagine Gareth you could sit next to Jude 😂 on the bench
So boring soccer I fell asleep sober ! Woke up and was entertained watching Copa America !
