    If I bother you, I do apologize. What that round black piece of tissue is for? I often see it on a timpano during a performance but not always. I’ve already searched an explanation everywhere on google, wiki, ecc. but found none. Thinks in advance

      That is a muffler made from felt. We use this kind or similar mufflers for shorten the sound when we need staccatos on instruments which has drum heads, it stops unnecessary resonances. Also we use it for fine tune adjustments of timpani. It helps stop the resonation of head while we tune each screw areas of head. So we can hear exact screw areas separately.
