I find the opening timpani piece of particular interest when thought of in the context of this pieces use in 2001 by kubrick. The artist is hitting the drums in much the same way the early hominids are using the bones as hammering tools.
Yes- im pretty sure thats deliberate by the timpanists. Unlike the other orchestral instruments they dont get many solo oippoetunities in classical musis-although Haydn did write a drumroll symphony. Modern classical music does though

It's not easy at all. Tuning the drums to produce a good clear sound, and at the proper pitch is quite a skill. Learning to play a roll that smoothly takes a good five years of serious practice. Hitting every note spot-on where it's supposed to be when the tempo is progressively getting slower takes real musicianship. Believe it or not, even hitting a single loud note and bringing out the resonance of the drum head is a learned skill (take some guy off the street, hand him a tympani mallet and ask him to hit the drum head and it will make much more of a "thump" than the clear notes that you hear here). So yes, that guy is a good player and what he's doing is not easy. Still, he should have been able to muffle the heads at the end without all that extra sound. That's a learned skill too (minimizing that brief "buzz" that was so loud when his fingers touched the head).

I've never seen this performed before. In some recordings I've heard, it really sounded like the three successive tympani notes near the end were E, C, G, but here, he plays C, C, G. I guess the music was written for a two-tympani setup and not for three. It's funny how my ears have been tricked when simply listening and having no visual cues.
Yeah the I timp was used for the VI(min) chord as well. I too was surprised, given that he has access to 4 drums. But I guess that's just the way it was written.
@@Marimbaman76 There are some different editions which includes some differences as full piece or just short intro. So if you search that, you can find both versions as E or C.

Awesome. But let’s not forget about the Cymbalist with that last Cymbal strike complementing the Timpani.
Watching other videos of this piece, the timpani guys are always REALLY into what they're doing.
I love playing the timpani! Poor trumpets :(
very poor ....
They're practicing 🤣. Give em a break.
At least when you roll, you can overpower them to briefly protect yourself. We pianists aren't so fortunate.
How are they poor?
@@QuinceDix3829 you didn’t hear them?
That man loves his job.
The Timpanist Nailed It !!!!!!!! BRAVO
Perfect tuning, timpanist!
super sharp
This is the music I’d love to play the timps for! Such a smashing time!!!
Same here, but I just pushed out of the soil in my timpani journey.
One of the greatest openings in all music played in a much less than perfect manner- practice practice practice
Good thing we are here for the timpani and not the trumpets...
Was gonna comment 'Oh the trumpets..' !
Correct.
Ouch. Chowed it.

Hard to start in time with a conductor as vague as this.
buenísimo!! saludos desde provincia del Chaco república Argentina

The Kraft concertos are pretty fantastic!
Oh I like this good work
Note Horn player plugs his ear each time the timps go!
Good catch. Didn't notice that. Poor guy.
Timpanist leans over and whispers at the end: "tune your friggin instruments next time, and maybe I'll dial it down a few decibels."
The timpani part looks fun to play as a pianist :)
Incredible ❤

Lol but it is definitely not easy to get those notes perfectly in tune

Wow same thing happened to me too and I’m a percussionist! I never bothered to watch or look the music up. Just assumed it was three notes
Why is the base drum covered with a rug? Was it a cold start!
