    I'm so glad I saw this. My 1998 Windstar is perfect for converting a mini van to an RV, but I hadn't figured out how to do the floor. I'm laying down simulated hardwood in the back, but wasn't sure what to attach it to. My cabinet work is on the left only where there's no sliding door and I just use a memory foam block on the floor at bed time. I added a Rockpals 500w power supply, 1.25 cu. ft. freezerless fridge, and a 12 volt ceiling vent fan from Amazon. You'll want the vent fan.

    I have a similar van. My mom drives it right now. It needs work. The sliding door won't open and close correctly. My dad got it closed so we won't open it again. The front doors won't close correctly either, but we have to use them. The back door/ lift wont stay open. We prop it open with a poor stick. Its horrible. (And slightly funny.) It also needs struts extremely bad. After hitting a bump in the road it is like a rollercoaster wave or something. I kinda love the old van. This video makes me wish I could build it to use for vanlife.

    • @ZachGood
      @ZachGood  5 лет назад +1

      haha most of the problems you've described are ones I've had as well. The sliding door was so finicky - sometimes it'd open, sometimes it wouldn't. There were mornings when I had to mess around with it for 5 minutes before it'd open up. Also, the back lift door refuses to open all the way. But those things only gave my van character.

      KangaAnd TwoRoos .... I have this van. Mine is a 1993. Grand Caravan . If your back door won't stay open, need new extension things. It's very easy, doesn't cost very much. My 1993 Van had the option of the two rear seats of both laying down flat, it's called " Con-Verta-bed . ". Made into a twin bed. I was just gifted this van. I'm looking for those seats. It makes into a nice size, comfortable twin bed. Raised up off the floor. I would say keep your van, just repair it. !

  • @taradead
    @taradead 5 лет назад +22

    You could've made the build significantly lighter. For only one person, you dont need stabilizers between the bed legs (not having them also allows for storage bins to slide in & out). I cut holes out of my bed platform, for weight-relief & ventilation. The wood floor and carpeting is also unessesary. My van just has a thin rubber mat over the corrugated metal...the bed legs work fine on it and i hardly notice walking on it. I've seen people hinge a fold-down table to the van wall, so you may be able to drop some weight there (i just use one of my surfboards spanned between the front seat and stacked bins as my table). Here's a good hack: use an old laundry detergent jug (kind w/ built-in spigot) as your dish washing, hand washing & tooth brushing water source (no need to buy a $15+ water dispenser jug).

We sold it for $600 to an RV dealership employee who wanted it for taking her children around. We couldn't flat tow it and I had no idea it could be turned into a wonderful 'travel van'! Also, with no insulation between the hardboard on the walls or roof, you are going to suffocate in the summer and freeze in the winter, but you will find that out for yourself. Wherever you are, you can make some changes. And just so that you know, they will allow you to work in the parking lot of Lowes or Home Depot to make any adjustments. Good luck with everything. Glad to hear I could be your guinea pig! One of the reasons I made this video is because so many van build instructional videos spend more time focusing on clever editing and background music than they do the nitty gritty details of the actual build.
      That said, I want to reiterate that my build was intended for the short-term (1 year) and my van is only meant for warm climates (70-80 degrees F daytime highs and 50-60 degrees F overnight lows). Because of this, I took tons of shortcuts and used absolutely minimalist techniques. My point is, it's great if my video gave you some good ideas about what to do and what not to do, but your build might need to be different than mine depending on your objectives.
      Good luck! Hope you have as much fun as I did!

      Yeah, using a wood skeleton approach on the base of the van was, in my opinion, a way better approach than drilling the flooring directly into the van. I tried to drill through the floor of my van and couldn't even do it because it was so thick. Also, with so many parts (like the gas tank!) directly under the base of the van, drilling holes becomes a risk, especially for a rookie like me.

    I had a '94 standard Caravan with 5% window film all windows behind the front doors, and the rear seats could be swapped in place on it too. Often I turned it into a more comfortable large seat behind the front seats, and took the shorter seat out completely, for when I wanted more space in back, yet able to take family in it. It was a lot of fun to drive, and could turn a circle as tight as a small car. It also was more "boxy" than the newer Caravans. Currently still drive a 2003 Grand Caravan I bought one year "off lease" from Enterprise Car Sales in 2004. Still drives great, but the seats can't swap places, something I've thought about changing over the years, perhaps install an extra seat latch on floor, to make it possible. Also my 2003 is not a "stow & go" type rear seat. I liked the inside rear door release on '94, which made it easier entry and exit when a full size mattress for taking trips, with both rear seats stored away into basement of home. Made it easier to both get in and out, but due to kids or items falling against the release and dropping out on the road, the newer caravans saw indoor release for back doors banned. I might yet build in an inside release, but it'd have to be a safe one, perhaps need to pull in a lever and then turn, to make it release from inside. I don't think it would be too difficult to hook it into the same latch release the outside release uses. I didn't upgrade to 5th generation (2008-2020) because I've heard they have a number of various electrical & mechanical problems. My 2003 is a "flex fuel" and those were built with a stronger fuel system to tolerate higher ethanol fuel usage. My biggest complaint of 2003 is my headliner fabric started coming loose a few years a back, even 3M spray glue to reattach didn't work, so I just removed it. I also had to replace the front struts, so went heavy duty Monroe on those about 3-4 years ago. When my two oldest were in high school I gave them the '94 short caravan, and bought the 2003 grand. When the '94 had about 180K miles and about age 15 years old, it developed a leaky head (water only, not oil) on the 3.0L engine, so used block & head sealer, 2 cans, fixed it perfectly, no more "Stanley Steamer" on the road, and the girls drove it still for about 6 months more, then we sold it. It may still be on the road somewhere. If your '94 has the Mitsubishi engine, make sure to change the timing belt every 75K miles, just in case.

    *Interesting project you did.* This is now an inspiration for a second life for my old van which is a 1993 Dodge Caravan with 482,000 miles. If yours has the 3.3 Chrysler V6 , it is just breaking in. If you or anyone else needs to add transmission fluid to the A-604 4 speed automatic, make sure it is Chrysler ATF +4 , or the transmission will die quickly.

    Padding is not just for deadening sound, you need insulation is you are going to be sleeping in your van, condensation is a major problem.During cold nights, your breath will condensate on cold metal and you will end up with major mold issues eventually with no insulation or ventilation. Otherwise, good job.

    Just some ideas that would make the task a little easier and maybe better as well, maybe I am just thinking out loud what I should have done or did with my conversion.: You can glue most carpets with spray on contact cement. Glueing reflectix insulation onto floor in between the wood,sidewalls and ceiling,would make for a much quieter and cooler/warmer ride. Youn cut foam core poster board into panels,that slip right in to the windows if you leave the window trim on.I was hesitant to take out all of the trim and covers before I built my bed etc,cause I was still thinking I would sell it at one point,but those days are over,THX for the vid.

Lemme tell you, no wife, no kids, no pet, no house, pure freedom, but yes it has it's price. Still wish I had my own property I actually owned before I'm too old to build it up and live off it a nice like minded partner would be nice as well, but It's gunna be a long while and a lot of work. So I paused it at the 25:00 mark because I’ve been want to ask a question but I had to wait until you specifically said you were NOT trying to stealth van living. I think if I were to be doing what you were doing with your build I would consider ripping out the front passenger seat. This would really open up your living space plus enable to to transition from driving to living mode and back again without exiting the vehicle. Another idea would be some sort of wall half tent that could hang from the roof rack and give you a three season room along the right side and rear of the van

    • @ZachGood
      @ZachGood  5 лет назад

      I did consider ripping out the front passenger seat for the very reason you mention here. I decided against it because (1) from my research, some states have regulations against removing passenger seats from cars, and I didn't want to risk having issues, and (2) the front seat was wired with an airbag sensor, so I would have needed to mess around with the wiring and my dashboard could've permanently displayed warning signs or sounded warning noises. It ultimately seemed like more hassle than it was worth.
      The wall tent idea is really solid. Small RVs are equipped with those kinds of things, and it'd be a nice addition.

  • @JoeZyzyx
    @JoeZyzyx 3 года назад

    Considering what you did, maybe should have looked for a C/V (cargo) Caravan, or Grand Caravan. Limo Black cling film on all windows other than front and windshield is easy to use, and nobody can see in when parked and sleeping unless they put face right up against window and cup hands on both sides of their face, and still can't see inside most times. I preferred my mattress straight onto floor area, a full size mattress fit perfectly, kept me lower than windows, even harder for someone to see me. On my '94 I had a tension bar from pillar to pillar behind the front seats and a dark curtain I could slide open or closed. Sometimes to have fresh air I'd put a wood wedge between a back window for that, rather than open it the full crack. On my current 2003, in 2004 I had a Viper system, did the automatic door locks, a fob panic button, remote start which could be set to crank on during hot or cold weather and run the van for 12 minutes at a time and then it would shut off. I paid BestBuy $400 for it and the install. It still works perfectly. So, over past 16 years, that's added cost of $25 per year on average so far. The original cost of van was at year old and about 25K miles was $17,000, so that averages about $1060 cost per year averaged 16 years. I only use Mobil 100% synthetic oil, change it every 10K miles, swap a new filter every 5K and add a quart at same time, so that's a cost savings too.
