what a great video! you are a true artist and you made it look easy. all these guys talking about how good they are with their stuff, you didn't even say one word and you blew them all away. very impressive!
Great show, really impressed. I'm a "do it yourself " person too, and all of my gear is hand made. But dam! To do it all there in the wilderness is really awesome!! Bravo!!
That is some nice craftsmanship and you gave me an idea on how to make my own sluice from a nice peice of stainless I have outback. I am just getting into the prospecting hobby and I admire your ingenious creativity! Now if I could only find a gold bearin creek!
Great to watch a master work! You sir just represented what I have been dreaming to do for years. This past summer '17 I went panning in N California and next year I intend to snorkel and metal detect.
that's amazing well done using natural resources and leaving it there for another time or for someone to use it. You are a very a clever and kind man and I think I will make one the same as you have done. Thank you for showing this clip. From Australia
this was around when I started getting into prospecting.... I loved this video, you could even say it was a favorite as I got bit by the bug! I watched it at least 10 times....
I very much enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing that with us. We are also what I like to call long distance prospectors, and very successful. If I may request on your next video hoping you make more, can you give a little more detail on the type of tools your using. Once again thanks for the share.
I was really into prospecting a couple years ago and watched hundreds of vids on it... but this is the only one I "liked" and subscribed.... and since Indiana isn't really well known for having gold rushes, I turned toward bushcraft... and have watched many more hundreds of videos on that... and this video of yours... is probably the best bushcraft video I've seen as well. The level of your cleverness is something I can only aspire to... though, if I had the gold in the stream motivating me, I'd probably get there pretty quickly ! :P
That was really great, very impressive! My mouth was agape throughout. I wouldn't have gotten those results with a modern wood shop at my disposal. Very inspirational video. Thank you for sharing!
+Fleotus Bing That was my reaction as well plus my eyes widened as if I was watching a unicorn having a conversation with Sasquatch... In a modern wood shop it probably would've taken me alot longer than 2 hours to even come close to those results... Very inspiring though.
Eh bud nice work Im just a newbee but you have giving me a bit of the fever and alot of ideas keep up the great work! You are a inspiration to all ! Keep it Green !
Very cool something about finding gold on the stuff you make your self is much more rewarding , great work all around... i cant wait to see a long tom version =)
@ Crom2000 Thanks D-man. That was 13 years ago and now we are that much older. Hope you are doing well out there in Langley. I popped in to see Fred a little while ago, he's now in a care home. It's nice to see that your marriage has held together my man.
i dont often write comments ! how bloody clever is that !!!!!! even the large clamp ! and i like the way he stacks it all tidy then fucks off !!!!!! brillant !!!!!
One of the coolest prospecting builds ive seen! Huge respect for what you did! I do have a couple small suggestions. Taper the front of your riffles to the bottom of the box to allow unwantedmaterial to more easily flow out. Use less water, you might be blowing out smaller or flattened pieces. Add a section to the front with no riffles to let material separate before it hits the riffles! Outstanding video and craftsmanship!
Froe. Sold at a variety of stores and on the internet. It's used for making hand split shakes and shingles. It's best used with a wooden mallet though I had one of them rubber mallets instead which tend to give a nasty bounce. RUclips has a video on how to make your own, it's about 2 minutes long and very well done.
that's just plain old school woodworking. I guess since he's in the woods it's "bushcraft" even though he's not in Aussieland. He used screws and modern tools. He's skilled for certain, just not what the old timers that coined the term would consider "bushcraft".
the wood is so beautiful- love that natural color or the redwood Nice work man- very nice woodwork and good job finding gold to get paid for your hard work!
man that was a short video i wanted to see him pan out what he collect.what a tease now i guess i will build my own and test it out to see if i works,,,good video
Well, you're officially cooler than me. I've made plenty of stuff for prospecting, but never while in the woods using a tree for materials. Ya know, if you put some carpet in there, added about twice as many riffles, and lowered the water speed, you'd have a hell of a setup and probably get 3-4 times more gold!
Any chance you'd be willing to post more videos ? I'm still amazed at all you had to know in order to post this particular video...to know where the gold could be found, the shape of the riffles and slope of the sluice box, making a shave horse, using a froe to make the boards, using a draw knife to smooth their surfaces, knowing how to pan once you have the material...just amazed at how you put all these things together and walk away with gold ! When I posted my previous comment 4 years ago, I didn't even know what a shave horse, draw knife, or a froe was...but have since added a couple of these edged tools to my collection. I can only imagine what it might have been like to have been raised in a family that was competent in the outdoors like you. I doubt I'd have become a window cleaner. Cheers, Brad
OMG dude that was freakin amazing.. if the end of the world came tomorrow u are one of the people i would stick with obviously u could build anything with hardly nuthin to begin with .. PROPS on the awesome sluice box!!!
When I viewed this video it had 85000+ veiws with 285 likes and 7 dislikes. I dont see why anyone would dislike it. I dont usually click like or dislike on a vid unless they just something oddly wrong. Like if comments are censored in anyway I click dislike even if I liked the video. Sorry Im a bit of a rambler, 7 people out of 285 hate independent people apparently. He didnt go into the woods and chop down a tree, he left the materials to decay away or for some future person to use. Awesome vid
A man who's been trained to ignore pain! To ignore weather! To live off the land! To eat things that would make a billy goat puke! In Vietnam his job was to dispose of enemy personnel...to kill, period! Win by attrition... well Rambo was THE BEST! I remember that when you said that
You Sir,Are an Old Time Artist! Well Done!
Very impressed. My 7 year old son and I watch gold panning videos every night before bed and he loved seeing you build that sleuce box by hand.
This is a real man right here. No words, no music, no bull.
Outstanding! It's a pleasure to watch someone who knows how to use tools go at it. And some gold, too. Very 1849.

great vid and great wood work! The only thing I would suggest is a longer handle on the fro next time. You'll get better leverage.
Fantastic video by one of BCs greatest prospectors. Keep them coming.

There are a number of "build your own sluice" type videos out there. This is the only one I've seen that is true to it's title. Impressive.
Big Bows on this video. Loved how you made your sluice.
