Happy 10th anniversary, keep spreading the knowledge and keep growing. What a milestone 1,400 videos and 3 billion views. I am 100% Confident in the next decade TED-Ed achieve more bigger milestone than previous ones. "Keep Inspiring"
All elements of this video were amazing, the lecture, the animation, all of it. I'm really looking forward to TED tutorials like this that everyone can use to ignite learning. If this cockroaches brain is like ours then it must feel pain then right? Even if he was chilled out first, their might be some discomfort right? Don't get me wrong I can stand cockroaches, but I must say thank you cockroach for letting us learn from your discomfort. We must teach compassion along with everything else.
No, not really. There is not yet a definitive explanation to as why people move to the beat or why we like music. Also, we hear stuff through our ears, not our legs.
Bass waves don't necessarily have more current. Sure, more current per wave cycle, but the same peak level results in the same RMS level of any wave of any frequency (always 70.71% of peak level). It seems to be a common misconception. Kick drums in recordings do correlate to peaks in both peak level and RMS level however, and bass frequencies do tend to cause more speaker excursion. [end recording engineer rant that nobody else cares about]
I'm dumbfounded that I am probably one of 3 people that has seen this video that would actually understand your statement, cheers to recording engineers!
***** I'm sure the twitching roach legs made some kind of sound! Any time air moves, there's some kind of sound. We just can't always hear it. Sometimes too quiet, sometimes out of the frequency range of our hearing.
***** Isn't that like, "if a tree falls in the woods, and there's nobody around to hear it, does it make a sound?" I guess I was looking at it more like light, or more generally emf waves. Things can be too dim to see, but there's still light. Things be in the infrared or ultraviolet spectrum and we can't see them, but there's still light. We can't hear a 2 Hz or 200 kHz wave either. I suppose that's my philosophy on it. I can't believe a twitching roach leg started this conversation.
Cool discussion. What I should have said was bass frequencies have longer waves, which allows the current more time to charge the neural membranes. Higher frequencies reverse the current too quickly for enough charge to build up and cause the neurons to fire.
I'm not sure if he's misinformed or simply lying to calm the audience, but that cockroach's leg will not grow back. A bug can only regenerate a limb through the process of molting, and this individual cannot molt again as it is already in the final, adult stage of life (I know because it is Blaberus discoidalis, a species I keep, and only the adults have wings). I'm not necessarily saying that this is cruel, but I AM saying that a lot of people's justifications for it are based on falsehood.
He just said it to calm the audience. Listen to way he said it - fast and with laugh. He meant it like a joke. Ask yourself if you would say to audience that cockroach that you have just teared leg off is never going to have that leg back.
The ninth grade class dissected cats...I cried a little when I walked past the class, because they have windows that point toward the main hall. I saw every little detail of Mr. Fluffykins...
I have three questions that I would greatly appreciate if you answered: 1. Why aren't we able to use that kind of thing on a person who is paralyzed? 2. Why havent you come to my school!? 3. What is your major? All of these TEDeducation videos makes me unsure of what I want to be in the future: a biologist, a physicist, a chemist! I like science a lot but I HATE math..big problem there I guess. Maybe I should just be what you are so I'll know everything! (I wish you were my teacher)
