Well if they gave it a stronger engine alot of people wouldn't upgrade to the Cherokee, the compass and Cherokee are really really close in size, if the compass had a more powerful engine please tell me who would pay 4-5k more for the Cherokee... The 2.4L might be slow but it's an extremely reliable engine that can easily be upgraded with after market parts like a turbo. The 2.4L was made in partnership with Hyundai/KIA, it's a bullet proof cheap to make engine that will keep cranking for years and years and years to come. Look on the road, most of the Dodge Dart's you still see rolling around have the 2.4L engine in them, alot of the 1.3 & 2.0 turbo Dodge Dart's are currently in a landfill. In the Hyundai and KIA's the 2.4 is slightly tweaked with direct injection, but at the time this engine was made FCA was in a pickle financially and didnt want to invest into trying to make direct injection work. The early Hyundai KIA's like the Optima that had this engine with Direct injection really suffered from carbon build up in the engine, so holding off on direct injection was honestly a great call for them at the time. People keep wanting more and more power when in reality this is fine for daily driving. That push for more power is why new turbo Honda's are blowing head gaskets left and right with oil dilution problems. Honda in the span of 5 years went from the 3rd most reliable brand in the US to currently being ranked 7th!!! All because they rushed their Trubo's. As the saying goes, if it works, don't fix it.
