    I won't leave home without my Mighty Swiss Army Classic SD key-chain knife. In combat, the greatest advantage is the element of surprise, and nobody expects to be attacked with a pair of inch and a half long stainless steel scissors. It also comes with an eye gouging plastic toothpick, and a file that you can abrade the F**K of outta somebody!

      I have two, a miniature swiss army on my keys and this one that I don't even know the brand, it has pliers, a knife (Obviously), bottle opener, flat head screw driver, ruler, saw, nail file, and some other stuff which names slip my mind. My mini swiss army has of course a knife, flat head screw driver, nail file, scissors, and tweezers.

    The most important thing when choosing a knife is to know the reason why you want it. Every knife has its purpose.
    Large fixed blade = survival
    Small fixed blade = self defense
    Folder = everyday carry
    Balisong = entertainment
    Stiletto = business

    Great choices! I own many of these knives! I'd add the Oso Sweet to that list as well. I've helped sell several to just my coworkers and family members! A few things I noticed... The bottom of the blade is referred to as the "tang", it is true that tanto-shaped blades are excellent at piercing but to say that slicing is another thing they excel at makes me wonder how much experience he has with blade shapes with a "belly", avoid constantly saying "and things like that" -- it's a cop out -- especially when the video is intended to be informative, and finally tip up vs tip down is more than "just a preference". If you'd like me to go into further details on the aforementioned topics let me know. :) Great topic and I look forward to more!

    I like half serrated blades which I always ask to be shown first when looking for an EDC knife. After that I like to choose what feels good and natural, as it conforms in my hands as I clench it in my grasps. Then it's finally COLOR, and I tend to stay away from black colors on the handle or blades. Blade shapes and grinds don't matter to me much as long as it fits the criteria above. That being said, I have quite a collection of EDC'S and like to change it up seasonally and what tasks I will be doing that day. I always wear a hunting style vest cause I like the big pockets to carry my big giant android cell phone and all my keys, so on one of the pockets on that vest I'm wearing will always carry an EDC just for cutting. Now on my hip pocket of my dominant hand side is ALWAYS a Fox Karambit trainer knife for a non-lethal protection defense

    for anybody starter first knife under $50....
    now I admit I am an old FART (futurama ref) but first knife generally around age 10.
    take your pick of any of the non locking, finger nick, slip joints that are swiss army, or case, or buck.
    many are boyscout models such as tinker ($20), Super Tinker ($30, about same price as Rat2, Cyro,) or the farmer (Rat1 price).
    As a late baby boomer, my most often reached for used EDC is either the SAK Harvester (discontinued, great small pruner (hawkbill) blade) or the Field Master. I mainly carry (5 days) the Dragonfly2 and off days the Rat2, but when a need arises the Harvester pruner blade gets most of the work. Having a saw/awl/screwdriver is time saving.
    After all a knife has two main functions, as a tool, the Swiss Army line is hard to beat for a starter knife.
    The second function is defense, a beginner first knife user needs to properly use and care for a blade before this concern.
    I would recommend first aid training before weapons training.
    Just my thoughts....

    A god folder is the traditional "Macgyver" style from Victorinox or from Wenger. They have very good folding knives as well, not just multi-tools. Pretty good knives for their cost and very useful to teach rudimentary knife skills to kids.

      +ogarzabello Ease of opening, spring is tough enough, cheap top quality, and learn how to propperly handle a knive.

      +staktikis Exactly! And cutting yourself once or twice a kid is part of the learning process and will teach you to handle all knives with more care.

      Cut myself pretty bad on a Victorinox Swiss army knife when I was younger while trying to use the blade as a screwdriver. I was applying pressure and it folded up on my thumb and sliced through the nail. It was a stupid thing to do but taught me two important lessons;
      1. Blades aren't screwdrivers.
      2. Respect the blade, dull or sharp.
      Still got all my fingers and the month or two of growing out my thumbnail served as a good reminder for the future. Anyone ever learn to ride a bike without stacking it once or twice?
      My current EDC is a Spyderco Dragonfly. I use it at least half a dozen times a day. Had an Opinel No. 10 in the past but found it too bulky. My Leatherman Charge is on my tool belt when I'm working (construction) but apart from that it's way too heavy for EDC.

    • @staktikis
      @staktikis 8 лет назад +1

      Spyderco, verry interesting knives. Not my cup of tea, and verry expensive here in Holland, but the quality looks perfect. By the way, i also cut half of my finger of as a kid with an Opinel.

    You know, I've always been a fan of Cold Steel Knives, even though it's a company that generates controversy, often as a result of their opinionated and sometimes brash company president Lynn Thompson. Most of their products are either high quality or even industry leaders though, and I really appreciate their fire, law enforcement, and medical personnel support as well as their support of the military. Their knives often equal or even far outperform knives costing similar or many times as much.

    Even knowing what I know now, and with all of the knives that I've bought over the years, I still believe that the Kershaw Skyline is an amazing first knife. It's the first decent knife I remember saving up for. Awesome blade and g10 scales. Plus it's a manual flipper which already makes it better than most of the knives that Kershaw produces. I wish I never gave it away.

      ChiefPrepper That is also a very good point when considering what knife to buy. We'll be covering other types of knives and their intended uses in upcoming episodes. For the starter pocket knife, the usage would fall into mostly EDC type task (opening/breaking down boxes and packages, light food processing, pruning around the house, etc.) Any good entry level pocket knife ought to be able to tackle these tasks without being overly specialized. Feel free to offer your suggestions.

    How can anyone suggest anything other than a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife for a first time knife?!? They are really good quality for the price, they're useful, and they will do 90% of the knife related tasks that Joe Average needs to get done. Gotta love the elitists on here who say to only get something that costs $100 or more. IMHO, there is no better starter knife than a Victorinox. Case XX pocket knives are also a great choice, although I would get a Case after the Victorinox. You can get really pretty Case knives, and they'll be more expensive. I have close to 30 knives, ranging in price from $22 to over $300. I've got quite a few of the top brands, including multiple Spydercos and Benchmades, and I still love the classic Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. It brings back memories of being a kid like no other knife can.

  • @billpowers916

    I have been carrying a Kershaw Thremite since they came out. Love it. -$50.
    I have been carrying a knife for over 34 years. I have folding knives in the $200-$300 dollar range and I carry an entry level knife!
    Too much heartache in my life from loosing awesome benchmades and other mid range blades in the $100-$200 range.
    I still have nice folders, carry them on occasion, and buy new ones when I can. But since Kershaw and other companies have been making high value low cost blades that perform on par with more spendy models I usually choose the less expensive knives in my collection to submit to everyday wear, tear, and sometimes loss!
    Cool vids guys. Thanks!!!!

    A great starter Knife dosn't have to have a locking blade.
    I EDC'd a barlow knife for years, and my current EDC includes a Victorinox Explorer.
    Many Swiss Army Knifes would fall under the $50 category, and would be more office friendly. A couple of models I'd recommend for starters are the Recruit, Cadet, and Spartan.

    I think the best knife for the money is the spyderco manix 2 light weight. I have the s110v blade. Witch for sharpening is not really for the novice sharpener. But if you just keep the angle that it had came with. Or just strop it once in a while. You really shouldn't need to resharpen it for a long time. You could always send it back to Colorado to get it sharp again. It's around 120 dollars. Witch could be allot of money for a knife. But if it lasts you a few years. Then it's by far worth it. Haveing a light weight companion with you where ever you go. And the capabilities it has. Just awesome.

    Entry level knife? That's the question. My answer is what's tasks do you plan on doing with a knife, then we go from there. If the person was not or ever going to be a "knife nut", I would steer them to a inexpensive Kershaw or Buck 110 to start with.

    I am able to carry whatever I want for the most part. I think the entry level knives are my favorite. If I break or damage one in daily use then I do not feel so bad about replacing it. I have a large variety to choose from, and an EDC rotation like a lot of people on here. I carry a Spyderco Tenacious while on duty. Off duty carry is an Ontario RAT II.

    I started out at age 6 with a carbon steel slip joint pen knife and have tried everything I can get my hands on since. Can't imagine starting out in my 20's or 30's and learning how to handle a knife that is razor sharp and $50+.

    Cold Steel Recon 1 is an amazing choice for a entry to mid level knife. Do not go on cold steel's website for it. They're overcharging by quite a bit of money. Check either amazon or blade hq for more realistic pricing.

    I personally feel it's smart to have a variety of knives. I've reviewed a couple of great versatile knives just recently on my channel. I plan on doing more but I'm just starting out. I enjoyed this video.

    Whenever people are looking to me for a knife..I recommend the Rat or the spyderco tenacious. once they can appreciate medium quality/high value materials, they'll soon want to know what else is out there. The rat and the tenacious are the first bites..

    I hit you for assailing your audience with unnecessarily loud music at the beginning and end of this video. We had to tone down the music, then boost the volume to hear the talking, and then once again tone down the volume at the end. For trying to be a rock concert, you got a thumb down. Get the audio under control.

    Meyerco all the way... if you respect your knife. For beginners they might not need a knife that is so sharp that you wont initially fell the first cut but my Meyerco blades are sharp and friendly as heck.

    Get the spyderco ukpk perfect knife. very light, perfect size and non locking. Good for everyday urban carry. a less expensive option is the byrd tern.

    The tip up or tip down debate also comes down to what is likely to happen in the (hopefully) rare event your knife deploys in your pocket. The hazard with tip down is that when you reach into your pocket, it is more likely to slice your finger, as it will generally be facing away from your leg. With tip up, the more likely case would be if you sit down, you will stab your thigh. Neither one is very fun. But apart from that possible danger, it is pretty much preference, and it depend son the knife as well.
    For me some of the better entry level ones are the ESEE Avidspa or Zancudo or the Onatrio Rat 1 or 2, depending on the size of the knife. Both are great value, the steel is heat treated well and they perform well for the price.

    Why only talk about the newer style single blade knives there are a lot of people that still prefer a multi blades knife or what some refer to as grandpas knife if one blade gets dull you have a spare and the knives with the pin or cam lock you missed several styles that are edc knives

    Quick question from a noob: What's the difference between the flipper opening the guy mentioned and a spring assisted opening? Is it the same thing? Or am I a complete idiot and it's totally different?

    • @BladeHQ
      @BladeHQ  9 лет назад

      Jade DragonStone This one answers the difference between automatics and spring assist if your interested: ruclips.net/video/GbS9jN0ntIk/видео.html. As to your question, you can have a manual flipper or a spring assisted flipper - in the later the blade is assisted open with the help of a spring, where as the former opens only through the manual force applied to the flipper on the tang of the blade.

    I notice you left out some of the proprietary locks like Benchmade's Axis and Spyderco's Compression. My first choice for general EDC would be the Benchmade Mini Griptilian. I've got them in 154CM, D2, and even a Doug Ritter S30V model (though I haven't seen any available for some time.) The Axis Lock is very easy to use for one-handed opening and closing both.

    • @jpoolerdom

      This video was all about entry level knives under $50. You can't get an BM axis or a spyderco compression lock knife for that price.

  • @Cliff_Dixon_42

    I know the Spyderco Tenacious is mentioned quite often, but IMO a great alternative would be the Byrd Cara Cara 2. Same blade steel, also available in G10 (but you can also get it w/ FRN scales -- lighter, and for less), lockback instead of liner lock, slightly longer blade (although the cutting edge is slightly shorter than on the Tenacious, because of . . . ), finger choil (better for choking up and doing more detailed work with the blade). About the only thing others complain about: it's not the perfectly round Spydie Hole (the opening hole for Byrd knives looks like a "comet" or a "beak"). Still worth a look, though -- especially if the Tenacious is high up on your list.
