      Great video! I think you did a thorough breakdown of how the system feels to use and it is an underrated metric.
      I've got one on the way to pair with my HDZ goggle. My initial plan was to stick it to an airplane, and I'll be sticking to that plan. Given the latency and what not my thoughts are that it will probably be best suited for mid range to short long range (lmao) planes. The extra latency shouldn't matter as much as racing or proximity freestyle applications and the image should look great on these 1080 OLED screens.
      Merry Christmas bro! We all appreciate the time and hard work you put into everything. Wish you the best

    Merry Christmas to you too. Thanks for being a key factor in increased options for FPV, and HDZero's continued existence.

  • @Vousie

    Gotta note, that using the VRX via HDMI on the HDZero goggles (just like all the others) adds about 25 ms of extra latency (people have tested it), so not all of the latency you're having trouble with is because of the walksnail system - it's quite possible that if you had the Walksnail Avatar goggles the latency would've been ok... Of course, then we're back to the problem of having to have a different goggle for each system...
    Often, people who run this combination will use HDZero for their whoops & proximity flying, and then Walksnail for their cruising/cinematic flying (where latency isn't as important).

  • @Dieselshroom

    My hope for this VRX is that Walksnail will be able to enable a 90 fps mode specifically for the HDZero goggles (or others that may come along). Sounds like that could improve the experience considerably. I was only able to get one test flight in with my system and was initially impressed by the image and penetration. It was very windy so I stopped at one flight cuz it didn't feel right, but it could have been the latency ruining my experience not so much the wind. Definitely excited to do more testing with it when the wind is less. Fun times we are in with these HDZero goggles!

    I think the whole fanboy thing is just silly, there are exaggerations coming from every direction. I don't understand why anyone would want to limit themselves to one brand PURELY for tribal reasons. I equally use my DJI quads and HDZero quads depending on the scenario, best of both worlds IMO.

      I would rock walksnail. I just want the cheapest yet most effective way. Tho walksnail may not be as crisp as 03, it's surely crisp enough..This means I now need to consider the full goggle setup as I can tell and be affected by latency even between analog cameras.

      You'll love the Meteor85. One thing I did on mine was swap the quad blade 2020 props for some 2015 biblades, and it's way more responsive. Those stock props are way too pitchy and heavy for the little 1103 motors. I also found it was giving me "core temperature warning" with the original canopy, but I swapped it for a Mobula 6 canopy which mitigated the issue, then when I flashed to BetaFlight 4.3 the warnings went away altogether. Probably won't happen on yours as it'll be pre-flashed with 4.3 (or maybe 4.4?)

    48 year old here, been in the hobby since 2014 or so. I'm pretty slow- definitely not a racer, can do gentle freestyle but nothing I'd be proud to share on RUclips. Never used another digital system but I've received this already, and my 4" long range quad is in bits on my desk as I type this waiting for me to graft in the VTX. I'll be pairing it with my Sky04X. I would never have considered it for whoops or acro quads, I use analogue for that, but I think it'll be OK in the LR quad- and I might consider putting it in my cinewhoops if I like it. Will probably migrate over to HDZero at some point in the new year for my micros, 75 and 85mm whoops, but I think I'll stick with analogue on the 65mm whoops just for weight reasons. I'm hoping I get on with the latency, but it was cheap enough to dip a toe in the water.

    I know you didn't intend to scare anyone away from Walksnail, but thank you for being honest. I have hated Walksnail since about 2 weeks after its release because I was flying at a park & as I'm in the air about 60-70 yards from myself, I noticed in my analog feed, 2 people about 10 yards to the right of where my kwad was. A few seconds later my video went to wavy black & white lines with just enough visibility to haul ass back to myself. It turned out the dudes were also fpv hobbyists & you guessed it, one was using walksnail. It affected my kwad, EASILY, up to 15 yards or so. I straight up couldn't fly if he was powered on. Luckily it was a big enough area I was able to fly away from him & enjoy the rest of my packs and he was cool enough to understand his shit messed with analog guys & seemed to genuinely care & take note. I like analog & I really want to try HDZero, but F the rest in my opinion.

      There's actually an additional problem with box goggles, that's hardly ever mentioned anywhere: Because most (all?) higher definition box goggles are using screens that were originally designed for mobile phones their native screen orientation is usually portrait mode. So the landscape video feed from the receiver has to be rotated by the display driver and this can take a considerable amount of time. After learning about this I measured the _analog_ delay with my Skyzone Cobra X V2s and my older Fatshark Scouts and it turned out to be > 23 ms or even > 40 ms, respectively. I wonder if this is still the case for the Recon HD, especially as the Scouts perform so poorly. Also, would be interested if EMAX found a display driver that performs better on their Transporter II HD. From Skyzone I got the answer that they are optimistic that they found some supplier that might improve the situation for their next release of the Cobra goggles.

    • @RyanQuellet

      @@mihyouko you are absolutely correct. I know for a fact that ScoutHD has this issue and it's very likely the Recon HD has the same screen and same issue. It's super interesting how many compromises there are on budget displays vs premium

    • @Vousie
      @Vousie Год назад

      @@mihyouko WOAH. I did not know that... So you're saying many of the high-ish definition box goggles have much higher latency than "slimline" goggles? Do you know of any video where anyone did a video about testing this?

    • @mihyouko
      @mihyouko Год назад

      @@Vousie yes this seems to be generally the case. I was a big fan of box goggles until I found this out. For analogue, the 23 ms are not such a big deal, I think. But as soon as you add additional delay (e.g. from a digital VRX) it's really noticable. I ended up switching to the HD Zero goggles with the Walksnail-VRX on my 80mm Whoop. And even though I'm really not a very good pilot, I feel much more confident and can fly obstacles much better after this step down in latency (90+ ms to below 40 ms). I want to build my next Whoop with HD Zero to see how the even lower latency feels like.
      Unfortunately, I didn't find any videos comparing the latency of box goggles with the "real" ones. I guess everybody thinks that box goggles are for noobs anyway, so it's not worth the hassle. I'm not sure if this is true. As I said, I'm really not a good pilot but for me, the difference was like night and day (at least with the additional latency of the digital VTX and on a Whoop - I guess it will be less noticeable/severe for slower aircraft).

However, when they go between their analog quads and walksnail 60fps they are almost certainly going to get a shocker and feel that “HD FPV is laggy.” I can fly HDzero for a few packs and then switch to DJI 120fps and that feels different/laggy initially until I adjust.

    Rapid motion creates big changes in video frames at low frame rates if this goes beyond a threshold it causes havoc with the h.265 compression efficiency and probably frame timing also.
    Running at very high fps 120fps etc makes life a lot easier for the codec and covers up the inconsistent frame timing.

    This is my experience also and why I am so excited for my HDZero goggle’s arrival.
    I couldn’t get 100hz to work on my Avatar VRX yet, but I got it for long range, and not proximity, no way!
    I am super sensitive to latency and can tell a 4ms difference 100% of the time from testing, once the difference becomes 2-3ms I have a harder time to notice with 100% consistency, but 4ms and up and it’s SUPER noticeable. From what I have seen among some of my friends they are even more keen and can notice even smaller differences than me.
    Merry Christmas!
    Edit: I just realized that maybe the younger people that grew up playing video games on latent TVs are more used to delay, I never thought of this before, if you grew up playing on a CRT or in an esports setting (as I did for example) with proper displays, the way you perceive latency will likely be very different from the people playing with a huge input lag, the brain gets used to stuff like this and ignores it, I just can’t for some reason :( maybe because I didn’t grow up with it or have the exposure?

    FYI, Running walksnail at 60hz 720p will have about 12-16ms less latency than 1080p at 60hz. 50mb mode also tends to reduce latency in ideal signal strenght. I assume your running at 1080p since thats what your goggles support. That probably why the lag is so noticable

      No, this was 720p60 25mbps. I measured it at 54ms for a whole frame latency (vs 19ms analog). I tested later on at 50mbps and that improves latency by 4ms about. The lag is quite real I'm afraid. Low latency mode helps a lot though

HdZeros whoop lite system was compelling until recently but now that Walksnail has a system within a gram of HDZeros while having on board video logging and 1080p I can't imagine many saying "oh but the 30ms latency". I buy it all to try myself as it's difficult to convey things like DJIs V2 goggles FOV vs Walksnails key holes or analog whoops agility in flight at 23-25g with battery. Honestly if it weren't for the indoor stuff my DJI v2 goggles would be king as the Walksnail and HDZs range is a joke by comparison. Should have the goggle 2s next month to compare.
