Again.... for all of the people commenting about wind... while I appreciate the concern, it’s not an issue for me using this system. *The camper shell gets secured to the 2x4 bracing with the camper clamps. The 2x4 bracing is secured to the I-Beams with screws. The I-Beams are secured to the A-Frames with lag bolts and screws. We get 50+ mph winds frequently out here. It has not moved. Well done and thank you for the instructional video! Have any tips for lifting the shell with only 2 people to get it ON TO the pickup? I have the 6.5' version and with all the glass in, it's very heavy as you know. I only have myself and my wife and I'd like to devise a method to lift the shell to put it on the pickup bed. I have ok strength but I also have a broken back, so other than hiring a couple of guys to do this, do you have a method?
I am a lady with a truck and needed to be able to remove my canopy myself. This video really helped me. This is my first project this spring so I can have a canopy or not. I pounded 4 t posts in the ground and used pipes where the 2x4's are. On top of the t posts I used top rail fence pieces to support the popes.. This was done on a heavy 8' fiberglass topper on a dually.

Thanks for sharing this info. I'll share my setup. I have 4 pressure treated 4x4s in a post configuration. Drive between 2 posts on sides, lift, add cross 2x4s then I use straps to anchor to "rack". Very similar, but less space taken vs. saw horses.
thank you very much for this. i know from experience that editing for a video to be as presentable and as coherent as this takes time and effort. I am currently on the fence about getting a camper shell due to how much effort it would be to install and uninstall it but your video has given me a better idea of what to expect and how to counter my apprehensions about it. i personally think ownership of a camper shell is a no-brainer for truck owners that haul more than tow. again, much appreciated.

When I build this, I'm going to cut a 4x4 to lay on the ground, that will be jammed against the back tires of my truck. This will have 3 holes drilled through it, so that I can drive spikes through the holes into the ground. This will prevent me from backing up too far when I go to remount the topper.

Camper Shell, Canopy, and Truck Cap are all new terms to me. What you call these, must be regional. I have lived in Minnesota for 47 years and the first time I heard them called anything but a Topper, was a few days ago.

Made it just like you said and it totally worked!!! Word to the wise, make sure you choose level ground if you can (obv, but worth saying). I had to put my setup in a field and as I drove the truck forward after getting the camper on the supports, my truck went over a small hump of ground that elevated it to the point that I needed someone to lift the camper support so I could continue. No big deal but not ideal.
Allan Martin - NWT, Canada - Great Idea. I'll be buying a cap for my Toyota Tacoma but don't have a garage to store it when not needed. This storage rack, built with pressure treated lumber, will do just fine.

Very simple practical solution... I have plenty of space to spare where I can do this. I may even cement posts into the ground instead of using moveable sawhorses. Where I live is on top of the highest hill in the area so wind is definitely an issue for me.

I wasn't even looking for a video like this, but since I stumbled across it I built myself a short set of foldable stairs that meets the height of my tailgate. Then I just one man army that thing on my back and place it on some stands made out of 2x10s. The stands come apart and you can throw them in a closet when not using them

I purchased second hand a 8' camper shell that had set on cross runners like this and found that the rear door had warped from sitting under a tree and the sun. The rear glass door would never close properly. I recommend storing a topper with 4 pads on the top of ceiling of topper.
I park my truck next to some double-doors going to my garage. I set up some pallets to hold it, and from there I just push the camper onto the pallets. Just wanted to share that with some people. I also tie it down with stakes in the wood.

Right. So that’s how you do it 👍 just bought a truck with a canopy. First time in 20 years. They’re ok for winter but I miss being able to put tall stuff in it. I’m welding up a steel rack that can stay in place permanently and I can just park under it. I'm considering a camper shell for solo campouts. We have a truck camper for family outings. Your solution looks solid, even though it's still somewhat involved and I imagine switching back and forth between slide in and shell kinda gets old. I was wondering if there's a way to attach 4 eyebolts to the roof of shell (reinforced on inside of course) and being able to load and unload shell with tractor. I'm also considering building a simple slide-in out of wood which would almost mimic the camper shell in shape but would be easier to load and unload. It would also prevent dust from being sucked in from tailgate, which seems to be an issue with the camper shell setup. But again, good video, well explained and demonstrated. Take care.
Great idea, but is there a reason why you didn’t spread the sawhorses space between the dually wider ( greater than 2” inches margin) so not to be so tight when you pull in and out with your truck?
Thanks for the idea. I'm going to use this to remove my steel ladder rack. The rack is 168 pounds and this looks like a safe way to get it off my truck. I was going to try and use the loader on my tractor to take it off but it won't reach high enough. This also looks like a good way to put the rack back on my truck if I want to carry a canoe, kayak or long boards.

I'm going to build these. I'm over 70 and taking the topper off and on is very hard, and I shouldn't be doing it. Besides, getting help is almost impossible.
Definitely great idea, loaded it on myself but i ended up scratching the tail side of the bed while pushing it on, it's been on there since, I'm not one to ask for help 👍
Immediately before I watched this video I was thinking of a similar method. I live have a garage, so Imstead of the saw hourses, I am going to mount supports to the walls of the garage and then extend the 2x4s between the cap and the bed. These 2x4s will be supported by the supports on the walls of the garage instead of ypur saw horses. It helps to see what you did and how it works for you. I am concerned about scratching the paint, so I think I will cover the 2x4 with a pool noodle so the foam is in co tact with the topper instead of the raw wood.
Got some good ideas here, but saw some serious safety issues, for example getting underneath the cab to add the middle plank. Also seems like the saw horses could be turned 90 degrees to keep the feet further away from the truck.

Definitely great idea, loaded it on myself but i ended up scratching the tail side of the bed while pushing it on, it's been on there since, I'm not one to ask for help 👍

instead of the wide saw horses you could bury and cement 4 post into the ground and then tie it down to the post to protect it from the wind .

Immediately before I watched this video I was thinking of a similar method.
I live have a garage, so Imstead of the saw hourses, I am going to mount supports to the walls of the garage and then extend the 2x4s between the cap and the bed. These 2x4s will be supported by the supports on the walls of the garage instead of ypur saw horses. It helps to see what you did and how it works for you.
I am concerned about scratching the paint, so I think I will cover the 2x4 with a pool noodle so the foam is in co tact with the topper instead of the raw wood.
Got some good ideas here, but saw some serious safety issues, for example getting underneath the cab to add the middle plank. Also seems like the saw horses could be turned 90 degrees to keep the feet further away from the truck.
