  • The Appalachian region of the United States has seen its fair share of steam locomotives. From conventional side-rod driven locomotives to more unique designs like Shays, Heislers, and Climaxes, Appalachia had it all. Tucked away in the mountains of West Virginia though was the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad who had their own share of unique steam locomotives. Charted on April 1st, 1904, the BC&G ran 18 miles east to west hauling timber and coal to an interchange point with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. The railroad primarily used second-hand B&O engines. Their only brand new engine was No. 4, originally destined for Mexico. In this video, I go over the history of the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad along with its famous 2-8-0, known to some as "Ole' Slobberface". Please share this video around along with the websites listed below if you're interested in helping raise awareness or funds for BC&G 4's boiler. Very well put together! My Grandfather photographed the last days of the BC&G, especially with 4, so this hit personally. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm somewhat sure 2:45 showcases one of his photographs. Lovely video altogether.

    Being a southern West Virginian, I've learned of this line many years ago. Have always been a railfan, especially with all the Coal Drag I've watched and actually riden on. I friended the Yard Master in Saint Albans, WV on the Chessie System as a junior in High School. In 1981, he allowed me to ride a empty Coal Drag from AEP's John Amos Power Plant to the SA Yard (trip of about 20 miles) in the Lead Locomotive with the Engineer and Breakman. Still had Cabooses on the rear.

    Buffalo Creek & Gauley #4 is another beautiful locomotive. I would like to see this “Consolidation”. It was interesting that it was originally built for the National Railways of Mexico (NdeM), until it was brought for the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad. This is also a locomotive that I remember, and a excursion star. I hope it would return to operation again soon. I’m going to be returning back to the state of Colorado for the train rides. And New Mexico too for one of them, which all of you know.

    As a West Virginian who is at Cass a good bit, seeing this means a lot. I love seeing a good mini documentary on the engine, that allows the average rail fan to really learn ole 4s history, not only that but the support this will add to her restoration!

    For those wondering, BC&G 14 shown at 7:29 is located at the Gaithersburg Community Museum in Gaithersburg, MD. It sits next to the CSX Metropolitan Subdivision right next to the former B&O freight house.
    I have many fond memories watching trains go by while seeing No. 14 parked at the museum. Good to see sister No. 4 on the road to operation!

    At the end of operation at the Spenser Shops, they did the usual ultrasound to see what they needed to fix... There was a fairly significant patch of the boiler that would hand about 160 pounds of pressure. The problem: The engine would be way way underpowered at that level...The shops ran it at about 180 pounds, and the folk running the last operations at the museum were shocked. The boiler ended up going to a shop in Alabama to get a large patch applied.. No idea if that were ever finished. The museum had a number of "real" Southern engines, as well as a shay from Graham County RR.. The Shay ran well after a whole lot of repairs..(Bent frame as I remember..) Now out of service i think.

    Interestingly enough, BC&G #4 isn't the first engine slated to run trains between Cass and Durbin. Previously, a USATC S160 (#162) was purchased for the job in 1972, but then a washout occurred on the line between Cass and Durbin (that is only recently being repaired) and the engine was sidelined before finally being sold to the Age of Steam Roundhouse iirc.

      What about the former US Army606? It was acquired by the Allegany Central, but was not restored.Jack Showalter said it was in good shape when I referred me to it as "Six O Sick". I to think that it's on display at the Crewe, VA. Would it be cheaper to overhaul that engine or another Gypsy Rose Lee consolidation rather than re boiler the 4?

    • @engineerskalinera
      @engineerskalinera Год назад

      @@williamclarke4510 it's possible that 606 wasn't available, or is in worse mechanical condition overall. Or maybe Snowalter didn't want to sell it. Or Cass wasn't interested seeing as locos like that never ran there historically.
