I'm nearly 70 and seen platini, Messi, Cruyff in their absolute prime. All true greats,no question of that. But this guy was on another level.He made really good defenders look like fools, he toyed with them.Jaw dropping, scratching your head with incredulity at his magical skills.A God in Naples and for me the best player ever by some distance. In his prime absolutely unplayable and lest we forget,on rubbish pitches, hacked and kicked to death with little protection from referees. A phenomena,who's stardust touched millions.

I've played pro and semi pro plus senior level and still play for an over 45 year old league and believe me I've played against all types of players on all different types of pitches. Anyone can play a good game and look good on fine level pitches in the early part of the season. Passes go where they're meant to, control of the ball is easier, shooting is simple..but take away all that and you try doing what Maradona done against some of the best defenders and holding players in the world back in the 80s and 90s and add to that some horrible muddy boggy pitches which wouldn't look out of place on Hackney marshes and he takes it to an altogether different level.
Trust me no one I've ever seen or played against could replicate what he does with respect to ball control and visualisation. Iniesta was maybe the closest I'd say in terms of anticipated movements from his team mates. But no where near the reflexes Maradona had

You must be too young to fully appreciate how good he was. Players today wouldn't get near him. Period. The defenders he came up against were true old school butchers who wouldn't think twice about leg breaking challenges and the rules were more relaxed then plus the pitches were awful. Players like Maradona come up once every 100 years.

Got to see him play live in the 80s. He kicked the ball and the entire stadium sighed as we all thought it was a mis-kick, but the ball was spinning and curled around two defenders into the path of the Argentinian winger. We all then cried in amazement!

Concuerdo completamente. Mucha gente ahora está poniendo a Messi como el número 1 de la historia, después de que consiguió el Mundial. Y puedo entenderlo si vemos las estadísticas y bla bla bla. Pero cuando hablamos de TALENTO PURO, de técnica y de convertir un juego de patadas a un balón en ARTE, no me cabe duda de que Maradona está un pequeño peldaño por encima de Messi. Nunca he visto a Messi tirando rabonas como lo hacía el Diego, o controlando el balón con la cabeza con tanta gracia, o intentando remates desde la media cancha, haciendo asistencias a sus compañeros con el hombro o con el pecho... Lo de Maradona fue irrepetible. Messi es mucho más eficiente, estamos claros, y tiene registros mucho más completos a nivel goleador (se va retirar quizá con 900 goles!), a nivel de asistencias, de pases clave, de TROFEOS (se acaba de convertir en el más ganador de la historia, con 44 títulos colectivos). Pero Maradona fue simplemente más divertido de ver. Durante sus años de gloria (80's), ver jugar al Diego era un espectáculo aún mayor que ver actualmente jugar a Lio. Maradona's intelligence, talent, technique and ability to improvise were absolutely out of this world! Messi is more efficient and a goal scoring machine with platinum dribbling and eagle vision, but Maradona... he's just art. Headers, shoulder touches, right foot usage, rabona skills, Maradona was so unpredictable, and that made him the best player ever, from my point of view. I understand people who put Messi as the #1 ever. Also, I understand people who say it's Pelé (for his legacy on this sport and 3 WC). Messi is an incredible talent. A disciplined professional. Diego is more relatable to me. He had a horrible addiction, he made many mistakes but what you saw with him is what you got. I've just watched highlights of Napoli V AC Milan, must have been around 1988/89 I would estimate. 3-0 to Napoli with Diego scoring with 2 assists.This was the age of the remarkable Milan team of Van bastan,Gullit and Rijkaaard lest we forget. The great man was kicked all throughout the game. In today's changed environment,Rijkaaard would have been sent off at least 3 times . Hacked down every time . BUT,He just kept getting up and never stopped wanting the ball .Hard to compare eras, but if he'd been playing today on far superior pitches and the more protection he'd get from referee's he'd have been even more of a phenomenon.
