My best guess is that William may have been falsely accused of assault or homicide. Remember what the article said about William being a “slow learner”? William might have had an undiagnosed mental difference like autism that made him seem like the oddball in the community and the real culprit might have arranged for evidence to point at poor William because of him being not like the “norm”. There is an infamous unsolved case in Britain that Dark Curiosities covered a month or two ago on a case much like this one. As in this case the main suspect in that crime was a man who was mentally different from the rest of the community and pretty much everyone believed he committed it despite the lack of evidence. Today the guy is free but the case is still unsolved and cold.

I wish they had the boy’s ghost haunting the Rhodes cemetery, like the woman in bayou. That would have been cool and added an extra layer to it. Like he wanders around saying “why did they do it to me?” “I swear I’m innocent” and you can hear him crying etc.
it would lost its taste if it gets too many. we have already seen Agnes Dowd. so I think one ghost is enough. there are plenty of other forms of stories to use.

The video editing is still top-notch, the content is most intriguing, but the Ray Liotta-like AI voice goes completely against the channel's original feel. Also, the writing itself feels different. I really have a strong feeling the channel was sold to someone else other than the original Strange Man.

"Slow of Learning" could imply he had a significant mental handicap, possibly somewhere on the autistic spectrum. Then again the turn of the 20th century was a strange time for mental health so it could have easily been someone with ADHD or Dyslexia, hard to really tell. It doesn't help that we never learn his age, so we don't know if he was a child, teen or adult at the time of his death (or murder, if you will), so it can make things a challenge to really theorize. I could picture it was either a case of manipulation by a third party, or maybe someone got a mean streak and decided to "punish him" for a lesser slight and things got out of control, they admit the fault in a fit of guilt some time after but the town decides to keep their mistake under wraps.
Exactly how I phrased it. I do think William was used as a scapegoat which is why he was killed. But which crime he committed I don’t know.

I hope Rockstar hides an Easter egg of the great Civil War on Strangeman’s AI voice in the next RDR game.
I don't really care for it as it just sounds a *little* less jank than Microsoft Sam, but still sounds mechanical and lifeless. Before I could actually hear the Strange Man's voice in my head as I read the lines, which added an extra element of depth to the vids. But this isn't something that is the end of the world; I can just mute it and read like before. I just miss out on the music.
We should make our own Strange Man vid on the mystery of this AI voice over.

I won't do a whole deep dive but if you want a simple answer i'm pretty sure its due to youtube monetization policy. They started requiring commentary or face cam on videos in order to stay in the youtube partner program. I'm friends with a youtuber that did no commentary content and he had to switch it up like this to get remonetized. The clip art girl is still a mystery though😂

The content seems like it was dumbed down. It used to have this eerie feeling but now it’s like one of those safe for school kid friendly videos we used to watch in science class.

Man, this channel and the editing style and atmosphere was exactly what got me into red dead but now it’s genuinely sad to see what the channel has become. I’m hopeful strange man will revert back to his old editing style one day…

Could be Stinney, but if we are to believe the camper, he says skin color didn’t play a role. Sounds like he was special needs in some way and likely not understood. Was falsely accused and people just believed it due to the disability.
Exactly. I suspect the poor child was not mentally like the “norm”. Remember the paper did state he was a “slow learner” which could mean he was on the autism spectrum. Probably some person committed a crime and manipulated the evidence in a way to point to him which led to his demise. I actually posted about it above.
This channel was a lot better without the terrible AI voice and the weird cartoon lady. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I understand a channel owner not having the voice or wanting to do voice over and instead using AI or voice synth's. personally I always skip video's that have only text... many enjoy semi-watching lore videos like these while doing other things or working on the computer. In this day in age with so much resources at our disposal for free even; there is no excuse not to have voice over. Now the KIFFLOM girl I can do without.

In the mini series on the history Channel about the Hatfield and McCoy fueds there was a mentally challenged individual who committed a crime and was killed by stoning if i remember correctly. Could be a reference, i always felt rockstar was referring to this feud anyways.

Its from gta. Rdr2 and gta are both owned by rockstar, and the game refence eachother sometimes with "easter eggs". The phrase shes saying is "kifflom" which is from the epsilom cult in gtaV.....it was a lot cuter when we could just read it and not have this weird mojo type style cringe cartoon lady thrown in our face. Im praying this is just a phase and strangeman will go back to not having her here....i hope he didnt sell the chanel.

I kinda noticed even before the voice-overs imo. The text has been a tad different. I understand yt'ers change their style a bit to appeal to a broader audience (i.e. having voice-overs for the car listeners) but it's not fully to the style back in 2022. They may or may not be considering constructive criticisms tho, the voiceovers are still relatively new depending on their working style

Definitely noticed some changes to the format of the channel and believe there are some opportunities that would benefit being addressed. In this video in particular…we are shown a conversation with a camper but the most relevant parts are just summarized by the narrator and not actually shown…why? We then go to the townsfolk and hear a number of comments they make…but none of them are presented through gameplay…is this deleted content? Why not include people actually saying some of these things if they are in the game. It feels like people aren’t talking about this mystery because people never heard about it. Just think more clarification and better sourced content would have been helpful to enjoying this video.

2 things: 1 I guess you have to meet that guy before these convos start up with people in Rhodes as I have spent MANY hours in Rhodes and never heard them
2 - I am still more concerned about that little cemetery just just west of where you meet the traveler at 00:47. Would LOVE to know its backstory

this game came out in 2018 and we still getting new content! Only Rockstar can be beaten by Rockstar. Can't wait for what GTA 6 will give us.
After the line about being slow of learning, and because this is a western themed game, where you actually spend the latter portion portraying a migrant farm hand, my 1st thought jumped to lenny from "of mice and men", and that the act that he committed could be something similiar to lennys, such as inadvertently breaking the neck of the wife of the owners son, after she tries to come on to him, not understanding his simpleton strength, and thats what would rile the town up so much to want to kill him, and because video game Easter eggs are usually much darker than the endings of movies, there would have been no George to protect him, the mob would have had their way with him, and now feel guilty for killing someone who didn't understand what was happening every step of the way

That one voice that says “you got that boy killed.” Who is that voice talking to and what does he mean? Seems like a pretty direct accusation towards someone.
It could be someone who was confronting the person who actually committed a certain crime that led to the poor boy’s demise. Perhaps they figured out the truth and decided to confront the true culprit.

In his dialogue with Arthur he mention a boy that maybe he died but he just disappeared , plus when you do all encounters with the wolves dude

Because there’s just so much in the game. People be complaining that RDR2 is not open world because the missions are too linear but yet they speedrun the game and miss so much, nice to see R* constantly proving them wrong with all the details that keep being found years later.

It sucks that I’m late on this so nobody’s gonna care. But there was a short book called “The Lottery” that was about people picking names written on sheets of paper out of a black blood stained box and whoever’s name was picked was sacrificed for good harvest. All the townsfolk would grab stones and stone someone to death. That’s what this is most likely based off of. The harvest in this game is probably for the tobacco fields the grays have because most of the town’s economy comes from the gray’s tobacco plantation
Are there more voice lines of the people of rhodes or are the women more apathetic to the boy's death? Like most of the men said they had nightmares, and the women were angry people still brought it up, that it was a closed case and nothing more. The shopkeeper and the aunt of the boy are the only outliers in this observation that I can see.
It probably is a parallel to that case of the youngest man sent to death. Or maybe he did something worse to a woman/girl.

I'm not surprised. Rhodes always struck me as a town populated by stoners.
Considering how backwards the town of Rhodes is, I wouldn't doubt that Rockstar took inspiration in George Jr's story

I know the audience is split on this, half love the introduction of the AI-voice, half don't. I still love the high quality of your videos, but I learned to love them without a voice and can't enjoy them the same as I used to. Maybe if I'll come back in a while things have changed, either because I can live with the AI-voice or because you have changed your type of narration again. We'll see.

I am personally not bothered by the fact that it's an AI voice as I feel the tone of the voice is fitting for the videos. I just preferred the "silent" videos as the atmosphere was always amazing and the videos were more unique in a way.

I get that after all this time running out of content to make. But it just feels completely different and lost some of the mystery with the voice and not the music. My favourite video on this channel is the Anges Dowd one. The whole music, editing and text description and font were perfect.
