I have personally known Sly since 2005. I even lived with him in Porter Ranch, Ca. in 2009 and in Woodland Hills, Ca. 2010-11. I went with him to the 2006 Grammys. This interview is along a side street in Compton, Ca. of a friend of ours named Baybay. Sly is named sly because he is sly. This interview depicts how Sly actually is day-to-day. He speaks his mind and sometimes he doesn't! He is a very nice person and very intelligent and artistic. His musical skills and mind are mind-blowing! I am honored to have a long History with him.

That is the actual timeline. I ought to know, as I grew up in and around motown, though I was only a child of the 70's and 80's. But, Motown/Westbound founder, Barry Gordon set it all into motion! I could care less about Suge, nor do I care whom Sly likes in the Super Bowl. The chances for a Sly interview are rare, why waste time on Suge and the Super Bowl? I genuinely want to know HOW Sly is doing. I want him to know just how influential his music and even more so his vision has had on the music industry. Probably can't tell with the sad state of the industry and the bubble gum product that it continues to push, but Sly's vision of a multicultural and multi-gender based band is still in effect today. If you never release anything else, it changes nothing on what you managed to do in a relatively short time. Thank you, Mr. Stewart!

I remember Sly, saw him when I was 13 (Los Angeles Coliseum 1972), stunning and I mean stunning performance. Stevie Wonder and Chuck Berry killed the show.....100,000 people........we convinced my darling mother to drive us in a 1972 Ford Pinto 100 miles (7 of us)....white crowd on one side and a equally large crowd of blacks on the other, white section was full, so this tall and very pretty lady (my mom) had us sit with the blacks.....the blacks were mostly in their 20's-30's....just watching the black crowd when Sly and Stevie came on was the best part of the whole concert!.....we were so skinny blued and white, and were generously accepted by the hundreds of black faces that would look at us and smile..we felt very safe! We adored Sly and the Family Stone......this was a year before his song "if you want me to stay"....unmatched in funk and rythm, especially for the day (12-14 year olds pick up on that kinda stuff)...interracial band and the black young musicians in the band were handsome, exotic and utterly mesmerizing ...I'm not virtue signalling..the black presence in music in was 50% of the 60's/70's, if not more.......all the big bands loved them.......2 concerts in my life stand out, "California Jam 1972", and 6 years later "Jesus Northwest", in Salem Oregon.....and yes Naomi, I am crying and praying for Sly because of both concerts!
I attended a Sly and the Family Stone concert when they were major stars, around 1970. Yeah, they were late coming onstage, around 45 minutes late. But they put on a great show. Apart from being a top notch musician, Sly in the late ‘60s was part of a small movement that tried to bring black and white America together. Almost unheard of in those days, his “soul” band was integrated. And much to the annoyance of the Black Panthers, who like Sly were originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, the theme of many of his songs was racial harmony as what we all need to work toward to make America a happier place. Later events caused Sly and fellow hopefuls to give up, but he deserves credit for trying. Like so many black artists, and musicians in general, Sly was ripped off by his so-called managers. And like most of my boomer generation, music lovers especially, he was into drugs. Just as with Elvis, Jimmi, Janis and the rest, hard drugs destroyed his career. But to me Sly is more victim than villain. Unlike now, when opiate addiction is rampant and meth has destroyed countless lives, back in the ‘60s recreational drug use was a social thing, a generational thing that like the music itself was part of the lifestyle of the time. Sly went beyond that and obviously paid the price. But still, for what he was and tried to do in his early years, he deserves respect and forgiveness in his old age.

I recall being at Madison Square Garden in 1970's and I was with my Dad buying tickets to see the Knicks. While buying tickets in the lobby I could hear Sly and the Family Stone practice "If You Want Me To Stay." I instantly recognized that bass line as it shook the walls in the lobby. I was drawn in to that sound and it's power. I really don't think Sly ever really knew just how profoundly he touched people with the power of his music because there is no drug greater than what he gave the listener which is the magic and beauty of music. You are right, but we cannot forget the reality that drugs that were once considered purely casual and recreational . . . we now know have the ability to physiologically alter the pleasure centers in the brain that can hook you into a lifetime of addiction struggles. Sly has at least survived a lifetime of these struggles (he's in his mid-70's now, many others die young (especially in the music business that overflowed with recreational drugs). I feel fortunate my experimentation in college did not result in a life of addiction. Scarily, it could happen to anyone. Do you know how many white collar types have lost their lives to cocaine, pain killers, meth, and opiates in recent years? It's STAGGERING.

The man is his time "that's what legends are" I don't mean this to be rude but, you must be a young'n wishing you lived in his exceptionally, legendary, best time of all DETROIT'S singers and song writers of soul. Today's music can't touch theses people's hey days! Example...you will never today see a farmer loaning out his land for a rock and roll, soul, R&B concert that is spoken of till this day "Woodstock" where kids that attended came from all across the US. As a teenager I used to study your recordings by playing the stereo right side separate from the left side, then play both sides together and I eventually figured out how you constructed your music. Even though you never met me, you were my songwriting teacher way before the internet had youtube. After doing the Sister Sledge " We are Family Tour" I release a few singles as Doug Payne & Polygon. Then started teaching instrumental music in the Philadelphia school District. And now I'm returning to the recording industry with new songs on the Phase 5 Record label, using everything that I learned from your style of songwriting. We are suppose to share our music with the world.

Sly.....genius in musical art and lyrics. He is looked after by the community where his RV is parked. He's a humble and happy man who didn't oversee his earnings and management absconded with a lot. Sly was so influential in the 70s, his style was individual and dynamic and still sounds fresh today. It's sad to see him this way but also great that he is still alive and kicking.

I loved Sly and the Family Stone. I bought several of their albums when I was a teenager. We used to rock at a night club outside Buffalo called Keystone 90's in Rockport NY and everyone went nuts when the local band played I wanna take you higher. Drugs have aged Sly prematurely like many others. Sly was a musical genius like John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. God Bless you Sly! Thank you for the wonderful songs.
This was nice to see despite the bad interview questions. I looked at some of his old interviews and he has such a sincere loving look in his eyes, that hasn't changed, a true musical genius for sure. If you're not moved by his music, then you're not made of flesh and blood.

If so, is he humbled by all the love his fans show for him roughly 40 years after he made it big? 4. Does he plan to perform with any of his children again in the future? 5. Does he have any thoughts or reminiscences about the late, great, Cynthia Robinson? 6. Does he have any particular songs that were his favorites out if all those he wrote? 7. I just got through watching his 1983 appearance on David Letterman's show. I love how his energy has not really changed, just matured! I hope he is doing well. Give this man his flowers while he's still with us!

I get your point but 71 is not that old for him to be in this state. Lets not be in denial about the fact that how we lived in our youth will tell on us later. Jed Shook but your original comment made his condition relative to his age and the truth is that it is not. He is in that state due to decades of heavy drug abuse and probably sexual abuse (sleeping around for years and years with multiple women) and now it's caught up with him. People need to not associate situations like this to age. Put it where it belongs, which is lifestyle choices for prolonged periods. That way, the youth and people approaching those years will understand the possible consequences of their actions today will show tomorrow .

These aren't just groovy, "I-have-sex-and-do-drugs" type songs. The lyrics are moving, heartfelt, heart breaking, and represent true artistic creation. God bless you Sly Stone. I have personally known Sly since 2005. I even lived with him in Porter Ranch, Ca. in 2009 and in Woodland Hills, Ca. 2010-11.
I went with him to the 2006 Grammys. This interview is along a side street in Compton, Ca. of a friend of ours named Baybay. Sly is named sly because he is sly. This interview depicts how Sly actually is day-to-day. He speaks his mind and sometimes he doesn't! He is a very nice person and very intelligent and artistic. His musical skills and mind are mind-blowing! I am honored to have a long History with him.

It went from JB (as he was a mainstay from late 50's all through the 60's and into the early 70's) to Sly (as Sly was a mainstay of the 60's into the 70's) to Bootsy Collins (as Bootsy with Funkadelic/Parliament was a mainstay of late 60's all through most of the 70's). That is the actual timeline. I ought to know, as I grew up in and around motown, though I was only a child of the 70's and 80's. But, Motown/Westbound founder, Barry Gordon set it all into motion! To him much is credited where credit is due!

Sly is a musical genius and a legend. If I ever get to meet him, I'll have a million questions and not one of them will involve football or Suge Knight.
I could care less about Suge, nor do I care whom Sly likes in the Super Bowl. The chances for a Sly interview are rare, why waste time on Suge and the Super Bowl? I genuinely want to know HOW Sly is doing. I want him to know just how influential his music and even more so his vision has had on the music industry. Probably can't tell with the sad state of the industry and the bubble gum product that it continues to push, but Sly's vision of a multicultural and multi-gender based band is still in effect today. If you never release anything else, it changes nothing on what you managed to do in a relatively short time. Thank you, Mr. Stewart!

I remember Sly, saw him when I was 13 (Los Angeles Coliseum 1972), stunning and I mean stunning performance. Stevie Wonder and Chuck Berry killed the show.....100,000 people........we convinced my darling mother to drive us in a 1972 Ford Pinto 100 miles (7 of us)....white crowd on one side and a equally large crowd of blacks on the other, white section was full, so this tall and very pretty lady (my mom) had us sit with the blacks.....the blacks were mostly in their 20's-30's....just watching the black crowd when Sly and Stevie came on was the best part of the whole concert!.....we were so skinny blued and white, and were generously accepted by the hundreds of black faces that would look at us and smile..we felt very safe!
We adored Sly and the Family Stone......this was a year before his song "if you want me to stay"....unmatched in funk and rythm, especially for the day (12-14 year olds pick up on that kinda stuff)...interracial band and the black young musicians in the band were handsome, exotic and utterly mesmerizing ...I'm not virtue signalling..the black presence in music in was 50% of the 60's/70's, if not more.......all the big bands loved them.......2 concerts in my life stand out, "California Jam 1972", and 6 years later "Jesus Northwest", in Salem Oregon.....and yes Naomi, I am crying and praying for Sly because of both concerts!

I attended a Sly and the Family Stone concert when they were major stars, around 1970. Yeah, they were late coming onstage, around 45 minutes late. But they put on a great show. Apart from being a top notch musician, Sly in the late ‘60s was part of a small movement that tried to bring black and white America together. Almost unheard of in those days, his “soul” band was integrated. And much to the annoyance of the Black Panthers, who like Sly were originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, the theme of many of his songs was racial harmony as what we all need to work toward to make America a happier place. Later events caused Sly and fellow hopefuls to give up, but he deserves credit for trying.
Like so many black artists, and musicians in general, Sly was ripped off by his so-called managers. And like most of my boomer generation, music lovers especially, he was into drugs. Just as with Elvis, Jimmi, Janis and the rest, hard drugs destroyed his career. But to me Sly is more victim than villain. Unlike now, when opiate addiction is rampant and meth has destroyed countless lives, back in the ‘60s recreational drug use was a social thing, a generational thing that like the music itself was part of the lifestyle of the time. Sly went beyond that and obviously paid the price. But still, for what he was and tried to do in his early years, he deserves respect and forgiveness in his old age.

I recall being at Madison Square Garden in 1970's and I was with my Dad buying tickets to see the Knicks. While buying tickets in the lobby I could hear Sly and the Family Stone practice "If You Want Me To Stay." I instantly recognized that bass line as it shook the walls in the lobby. I was drawn in to that sound and it's power. I really don't think Sly ever really knew just how profoundly he touched people with the power of his music because there is no drug greater than what he gave the listener which is the magic and beauty of music. I love you, Sly. God bless you!
You are right, but we cannot forget the reality that drugs that were once considered purely casual and recreational . . . we now know have the ability to physiologically alter the pleasure centers in the brain that can hook you into a lifetime of addiction struggles. Sly has at least survived a lifetime of these struggles (he's in his mid-70's now, many others die young (especially in the music business that overflowed with recreational drugs). I feel fortunate my experimentation in college did not result in a life of addiction. Scarily, it could happen to anyone. Do you know how many white collar types have lost their lives to cocaine, pain killers, meth, and opiates in recent years? It's STAGGERING.

Today's music can't touch theses people's hey days! As a teenager I used to study your recordings by playing the stereo right side separate from the left side, then play both sides together and I eventually figured out how you constructed your music. Even though you never met me, you were my songwriting teacher way before the internet had youtube. After doing the Sister Sledge " We are Family Tour" I release a few singles as Doug Payne & Polygon. Then started teaching instrumental music in the Philadelphia school District. And now I'm returning to the recording industry with new songs on the Phase 5 Record label, using everything that I learned from your style of songwriting. We are suppose to share our music with the world.

I loved Sly and the Family Stone. I bought several of their albums when I was a teenager. We used to rock at a night club outside Buffalo called Keystone 90's in Rockport NY and everyone went nuts when the local band played I wanna take you higher. Drugs have aged Sly prematurely like many others. Sly was a musical genius like John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. God Bless you Sly! Thank you for the wonderful songs.
This was nice to see despite the bad interview questions. I looked at some of his old interviews and he has such a sincere loving look in his eyes, that hasn't changed, a true musical genius for sure. If you're not moved by his music, then you're not made of flesh and blood.

I just got through watching his 1983 appearance on David Letterman's show. I love how his energy has not really changed, just matured! I hope he is doing well. Give this man his flowers while he's still with us!

I get your point but 71 is not that old for him to be in this state. Lets not be in denial about the fact that how we lived in our youth will tell on us later. Case and point, Farrakhan and Shirley Caesar who lived cleaner lives in their youth, are both in their eighties and they are as sharp as a whip and this man looks like he could be their barely standing elder.
Jed Shook but your original comment made his condition relative to his age and the truth is that it is not. He is in that state due to decades of heavy drug abuse and probably sexual abuse (sleeping around for years and years with multiple women) and now it's caught up with him. People need to not associate situations like this to age. Put it where it belongs, which is lifestyle choices for prolonged periods. That way, the youth and people approaching those years will understand the possible consequences of their actions today will show tomorrow .
"i meant was father time catches us relevant2age" Everyone ages differently but generally speaking, 71 year old black people who didn't abuse their bodies and take care of themselves don't end up looking like this man looks. I don't have to use any public figures to know this to be true because I have friends and family members in their seventies and older who are aging yes, but not like this. Father time does catch up with everybody sooner or later but lets not pretend that how we take care of ourselves or not, will play in how we end up when he does catch us.

This very seriously puts tears in my eyes and breaks my heart seeing what drugs do. i don't hate humans i hate the demons and the devil in what bad drugs do to ruin, destroy and take lives of too many humans just like i hate what cancers do to humans.

This man is a genius and the best 'funk' artist and one of the best artists in American history. "Everyday People", "Thank You", "Running Away"? "If You Want Me To Stay"? Etc. These aren't just groovy, "I-have-sex-and-do-drugs" type songs. The lyrics are moving, heartfelt, heart breaking, and represent true artistic creation. God bless you Sly Stone. Because Larry Graham is Sly's cousin and was in Sly's band Sly and the Family Stone. Larry Graham and Prince were close friends.

And WTF are you asking him about Suge Knight for? Just because they're both black? Sly and Suge are worlds apart. You might as well have asked him about the latest Dolly Parton news or something. Interviewer comes off like the music business itself: using a living legend for your own selfish purposes while pretending to be a friend and supporter. Then once you've got what you want from him you'll probably toss him overboard just like the music business does to artists. Sheesh...

interviewer was super annoying. Very abusive of the man's hospitaity and courtesy. Could have been objective and kinder to a man who's a legend and obviously has gone thru hell in his life. Kindness I think was missing.
