- Today's video is a care and breeding guide on the Rainbow cichlid (Herotilapia multispinosa). Rainbow cichlids are incredible Central American cichlids, with great color and behavior. Rainbow cichlids are relatively peaceful for a cichlid, and they don't grow too large, so they don't require a huge tank.
Rainbow cichlids are great community fish, whether thats with larger tetras, barbs, and bottom feeders, or with a community cichlid tank. They have a ton of tank mate options, making them an awesome choice for most setups.

Hi Troy I totally agree with you they are very underrated. Have one about three years now and he is in with some bigger fish like Firemouths and red shouldered and gold severums , blue acara. Boy he is a feisty guy he colors up bright yellow with black down the middle of body and he doesn’t let anyone push him around. Got a lot more out of him than I thought when I got him. Great little fish!!
The Rainbow Cichlid is on my wishlist! They are a little bit harder to find though.

Iv just got a rainbow to go in my community tank! So far so good, it’s lovely to watch and gets on really well with my fire mouth and electric blue acara. Such an underrated cichlid.

I have 2 for a year now in my 55 gallon with some other tank mates, they are awesome, they really stand alone as having there own personality, they definitely look at you and recognize you, they are definitely great because it’s like having a big fish personality in a smaller fish, there bulky and nicely shaped, great for people who don’t have room for bigger fish

Beautiful yes. But mine are A-Holes. I guess I just got unlucky. They are always fighting with each other and my Firemouths. They also destroyed my crypts.

Hi, great channel by the way. I have 2 pair of the rainbow cichlids and they have both produced fry at the same time which is not a problem. When and how do you when you separate them from parents? The fry are just over a week old and mom and dad are still very much protective of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated, kind regards
I would pull out the fry as soon as they are free swimming. The other pair of Rainbows will probably start picking off the babies

Hey im just getting into cichlids. I have a 29 gallon tank and im looking to stock it with african ciclids. I have an electric yellow two blue striped one (petsmart just labeled it under assorted african) an albino peacock and what looks like a type of peacock with a grey/blue body and yellow fins. I want to overstock the tank for less aggression and i want to go with some species that will cohabitate well and not get too big. How many more should i get and what species? I will be buying online as i dont have a local fish store in my area
