God Spore had so much potential. If only it wasn't published through EA we could have gotten something closer to what is shown here and not the watered down child friendly cartoon game we ended up with
I was living and breathing spore back in the day, pre-release. The bulk of fans seemed to gravitate over on the GamingSteve forums since the guy was the biggest outlet of news on the project and at some point the followers hit critical mass. Hundreds of theory threads painting out how game mechanics could work and whole worldbuilding projects that people wanted to bring into reality. We had arguments we went through again and again as to whether or not internal organs could be represented and whether or not you could have some version of the aquatic stage as it was originally portrayed in gas giants. We set ourselves up for disappointment but, damn, the sheer excitement and wonder may as well have been a drug. I miss those days.
Looks like it wasn't so "cute looking" back then, I kinda like this "prehistoric" feeling more than the actual game aesthetic. But I suppose it was too niche. Thanks for sharing that anyway !
Sooo interesting to see the idea they had and i really like it that you walk out of the water yourself and in the creation mode the see through egg background is just awesome. We NEED a Spore Remake (kid mode/adult mode... no blood, fancy texture - blood, real looking texture, also liked the option with more limbs in the water phase etc.) or we just have our childhood memories and Love the Game :P
It's sad the final game wasn't bigger or closer to the original dream, but I still wouldn't give up today's Spore for the world! Think the game may have accidentally become something more due to the change in the theme.
@@bohashem921 I don't think HL2 beta is a better game than retail, i felt it tries so many things at the same time but doesn't worry about exploring them, although i like that mix between Orwell 1984 and Gotham City it has, i prefer the Eastern-European setting, it has more charm and is quite unique

It's kind of funny how easy it is to recognize those features mentioned in the trailers in the final game even though they look completley different from the final version, and to think that most of these are from very early versions of the game makes it even funnier.
18:53 whats interesting is that Tamaran (The Planet depicted here) is shown to have Two Moons, which is something that isn't possible in the final Version of Spore. though, given by the fact that they disappear upon zooming out from the Planet, its possible that they are just simply background Moons. but then... we have this shot of the Ringed Gas Giant: 19:22 now, its hard to tell if there is a second Moon orbiting it, but when you look at that Black Object orbiting near the Rings of the Planet, you can see that its a Second Moon orbiting the Planet. this means that Planet's in Spore were going to have more than just a Single moon orbiting them. though, why was this Feature Not included in the Final Game is anyone's guess.
Sadly, similar to the other comment, that's what game development is also about, streamlining, simplifying... more often than not, i assume spore bit off more than it could chew, like the aquatic stage, the hardware wasn't there, but the bugs were, simplest way to put it. Think of how buggy spore is anyway, honestly. sadly, the worst parts, the water stage was going to be a dlc, it was even advertised in limited runs on some websites.

This makes me so sad… I played the final version of Spore for hundreds of hours no doubt but I get so sad thinking about what could have been… I miss the science and realism.
Watching this now, I lament what could have been. EA is truly one of the most monstrous conglomerates in the gaming industry. Their ability to ruin and corrupt everything they touch is stunning at times.
Spore died too soon. They could milk it as the sims even. What is impresive even the game we got had many stuff mentioned in this video, but for some reason (probably to appeal to kids) they are like hidden or unfinished. The game itself has tons of fun animations nut you barrely have time to notice and appreciate them.
Everyone talking about the aquatic stage getting gutted but man could you imagined if they kept in the creature's movements being determined by the shape instead of all having the same animation
sadly, i guarantee it was buggy enough to be gutted... ea is smart, so it either didnt look good. even sadder, there is a little of the procedural left, you can really tell with when you mess with the skeleton, but it's just not enough to care. realistic skeleton and hands is like 2 items out of all they offered
Things I would improve with this demo. Cell stage: great Creature stage: aquatic stage could be separated from it Tribal stage: could use some extra fleshing out City stage: could be fleshed out a lot more & renamed to medieval stage to avoid confusion Civ stage: could use some extra fleshing out Terraform stage: should be merged with space stage Space stage: a bit too ambitious but I like the supernova mechanic.
That moment where Will zooms out all the way out of the planet and into the solar system, and later when he zooms out again to show the multiple solar systems, and the crowd's reaction is crazy, it really captures the hype and discovery of this game
There was a time this would’ve released as is. Games even do this to this day. Get dumbed down and simplified because of “casual gamers” well screw casual gamers they have call of duty. When did it become okay to dumb down games. A perfect example is Bethesda games. Every sequel is dumbed down. Todd Howard recently said the paradigm seems to have shifted again and he said starfield is supposed to not have been dumbed down. We will see, but us real gamers need real games for us. Not a single studio is left that hasn’t pandered to casual gamers. I hope starfield truly breaks this cycle
They should have just focused on the creature gameplay from cell stage to land/air stage or even an aquatic/amphibious playstyle. I think the civilization elements were way too ambitious.
I'm glad that 2008 Ea publish this game and not 2009-2024 didn't publish this game, each stage would have been dlc and maxies would have been dead faster

Because there in no source code of Spore available. No one really knows what engine was used, so to implement something like new creature stages would be pretty much impossible.

because not all mixes are good. The problem is people being risk adverse. 90% of businesses fail before reaching the 5 year mark. Less than 2% of the population is self employed for this reason. They prefer the comfort of being looked out for. Gaming devs are the same. They just rinse and repeat the same formula instead of innovating. Innovating comes with risks. They could potentially make the greatest game up to that point but they would rather stick to the path often traveled than risk creating a flop.
I get back to spore 2005 beta videos every year. So sad. This game was criminally simplified.
