- Kannapolis, NC is a city in Cabarrus County and the 20th largest city in North Carolina with a population a little less than 51,000 people. Kannapolis is part of the Charlotte Metropolitan area - which is one of the fastest growing in the United States. Kannapolis is also the hometown of the Great Nascar Driver - Dale Earnhardt.
The early meaning and usage of the city's name was a direct reference to Cannon Mills Corporation or James William Cannon himself. As matter of fact - early publications called the city Cannon-opolis. A widely accepted version of the name Kannapolis comes from an combination of the greek word "Kanna" ( reeds not looms) and polis which means city. Some people believed it meant "City of Looms"? In 1906 , J.W. Cannon asked Cabarrus County Commissioners to name the town Kannapolis , changing the beginning to a K instead of a C. Please read up more on the history of Kannapolis.
