At last a pouring video that actually shows the pour in action, wonderful. I paid good money for a video that showed me nothing but applying masking fluid, it left me feeling cheated. Wish I seen yours before I parted with that money. Thanks for sharing

Beautiful work of art, Leslie. I've seen others that pour the paint but they didn't have an underdrawing, just created art from whatever happened on the paper. I really liked the process you used and I am going to subscribe in hopes of seeing more of your work. tfs, Sandra

I have to agree with Janet. This has been the best video I've seen on pouring...didn't know it required so many layers of pouring. All the videos that I've seen have only shown one layer and I was always left wondering how they achieved such depth in the end result. No one discussed masking over painted areas, which I have always been afraid to do. Thank you for giving me the courage to try this.

So with the masking you have to mask light to dark value and add color in progression from low to high saturation. Beautiful work. Thank you for the tips.

Those are multiple layers of masking fluid and poured paint. I think by that point what Leslie had done was
1) applied mask to preserve strongest highlights as white
2) poured her lightest colors and waited for them to dry
3) applied a second layer of mask to preserve lighter midtones
4) repeat: pour again, dry again, mask again
And she repeats those steps several more times. The time spent drawing and masking is almost certainly a few hours of work and isn't shown here.

Art teacher here:) I love colours and I do more acrylic and oil paintings but you have inspired me to try this on a smaller scale. I have used masking tape so far to only preserve white. This reminds me a lot of the same principles as waxing for batik. Thank you so much for sharing. It was magical!:)
Thank you for taking the time to film this. I learned this in an adult ed class and was about to try it again, so decided I better review the techniques. I have to say, your drawings are impeccable and your finished product is spectacular. I am inspired!
I did stretch the paper before I started to pour. As for brown, it can be achieved through layers of color. I would suggest making an orange in one pour and then in the next pour, pour blue onto of that.

Pouring really is so much fun. I love the control of the masking and the spontaneity of flowing paint.
I am not sure about confidence but I certainly enjoy experimenting. I used a ruling pen and a brush dipped in soapy water to apply the masking fluid. It is best to use Winsor & Newton masking fluid and good paper (100% cotton) so the paper won't rip. And yes, I do teach classes. Most are in Canada but occasionally I teach in the US. My workshops are listed on my website.

I did stretch the paper. It is 300lb cold press and I soaked it for a few minutes in cold water then stapled it to a board. Staining colors are best for pours so try to use a brown that stains or mix up a brown from colors that do stain.

Yes, you can stretch paper after you've applied masking fluid.

Thanks Nikki. I peeled the dried masking fluid off at the end. I use masking fluid to save either the white of the paper or the paint while I pour paint onto other areas. Once I have saved everything I wanted to save and poured all my layers of color, I peel off the masking fluid to reveal my painting. It is Winsor & Newton Art Masking Fluid that I used.

Will this work with 140 lb. 300 is soooo expensive! Did you 'learn' this techinique from college, a teacher or discover... this is so fabulous... I have a video of Nicholas Simmons who pours but your time to share this is sooo generous and helpful.. I can't wait to do this with young artist's and of course myself. I love love watercolor. Wow! The results are amazing. But the process is so involved. I peobably don't have the patience and energy to do all those maskings.

I do mix tube paint with water. The first layer is the lightest color of paint and I build up the saturation of the paint with each pour.

Ms. Leslie~ When you remove the masking fluid, I would think it removes all the layers...or does it dry and stick to the paper? I thought the finished product would just have huge splotches of white, so I was amazed by the end too! That is amazing...you should be my teacher :P
Omg you are a genius, truly a masterpiece. You make it look effortless. Its has inspired me to get some masking fluid, I could never achieve this skill level though. Thanks for sharing your video, maybe in the future you could do a demo on masking, perhaps on colored paper to differentiate the two. Tyvvm, just beautiful..

I protected the white areas with masking fluid so I could pour freely with the paint. The masking fluid is applied to areas of color that I wish to save then it is removed at the end.
It is Winsor and Newton masking fluid. I use a ruling pen and a brush to apply it.

Thank you mxikna! I try to keep my warm colors around my focal point and use cool colors as I move away from the focal point. Other than that, the color goes where it wants to go. I really don't have any idea how it will turn out until I pull the mask up.

Yes, I do use the masking fluid to get the detail. I use a ruling pen, which is a type of drafting tool, to apply the mask. I can get really fine lines with it.
Abigail, I used Arches 300lb cold press paper and peeled off the dried masking fluid at the end.

Thanks Danica! I use Photoshop to work out my sketches from photos, combining, rearranging and simplifying. Then once design issues are figured out, I just trace it onto my paper.

I usually mask during the day, pour in the afternoon, and let it dry overnight. You can use a hair dryer to dry it but that will lighten the color.
