Playing in full now on artistsnetwork.tv, Lian begins this video workshop with tips for maintaining clean color, then starts the demo with a review of the subject--lush grapes in a California vineyard. After working on a pleasing composition, he shows how to capture all the color variety, not only in the grapes, but the stems and branches and leaves, teaching tips for negative painting, pouring color, "finger painting" and adding delicate details. Follow along to create this colorful, light-filled painting.
Preview Watercolor: Grapes Now! Pour, spray and finger paint in clusters of grapes, then use negative painting to come back in and define your shapes, for grapes that glow with color and light!

Lian Quan Zhen uses M. Graham & Co. watercolors: Pyrrol Red, Prussian Blue and Hansa Yellow Deep. He uses 140-lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper, or an unsized rice paper backed with heavy rice paper ow watercolor paper.

New to watercolor. I loved your technique for laying down a base of color and separating the clumps of grapes. I also need to learn how to define the grapes as in your finished piece. DO you have a video for the next steps? Thank you

I want to say he's using a rice paper which is fairly thin and allows the colors to bleed and spread. Without him picking it up I can't be 100% sure, but I know that he uses the rice paper frequently and it's a traditional material in chinese painting.

i was considering this to but it seemed to me that it didnt really have the effect of rice paper since i use it to. but perhaps its a different sort of rice paper? interesting. thank you for your reply :)
