Play this 10-minute challenge for Fretboard Freedom and smooth up the neck playing. Today we are playing a pentatonic lick in box number 3. This closed position pattern is one of the essential shapes for playing up the fretboard. This little etude makes you do extreme position shifts so that Box no 3 becomes effortless in your playing. I’m demonstrating the lick in C-major and F sharp major.

For at least the last five years I have been continually practicing closed position playing. (Tenor Banjo CGDA) When learning any song I always learn it closed before adding open strings. More and more as I play today I am trying to keep in mind the shape of the scale that is under my fingers. I my skills somewhere between Intermediate and worst player in the world. My singing is not much better. Now as for patterns as I find new ones I try to take them around the circle of fifths. It helps.

It is strange to me, every tutorial i watch in the mandolin community encourages box pattern playing. Most other instruments in my experience have said this hinders your playing. Being a former bassist, I'm familiar with box pattern playing. I need to learn them on mandolin, as it has become my main instrument.
