When Dr. Smith was presented as a sinister character to be feared, not a silly buffoon. I wish Irwin Allen had stuck with the formula that made season 1 so great.
Actually, I think Jonathan Harris has a lot to do with the change in character. He basically argued that in Smith's original form, fans of the show would have wanted him killed off.
@gregford2103 I'd heard the same thing. Harris was worried that after 5 or 6 episodes as a nasty, his character would be killed off, and he would be unemployed.
Allen saw all his sci fi shows as goofy kids shows that he saw as money makers. He never took them seriously. If you told him 60 years ago that the now adult fans of Lost In Space would be having serious discussions on the show and storyline quality he would’ve thought you crazy.
Both shows were better in B/W, but that's probably because they could afford better writers since they weren't shooting in color. Both shows still had some excellent color episodes, with Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea's being the ones that focused on espionage-related stories.
@@gregford2103, The cost of shooting in color was minor, especially when one considers the total production cost of the show was the highest in TV history, up to that time.
By far the best Sc-Fi show ever. The ultimate escape from the rat race. As it was originally shot in colour even though it aired in B&W for the first season, it's a pity that when it was released on DVD and later Blu Ray it should have been released in colour for all three seasons, they should have released it in 4k as well, admittedly season one in B&W did have it's charms. Again it's the best of the best and I haven't stopped watching since it's release in 1965.
