My first time ever in a manual transmission was an exercise in fumbling awkwardness. But the funny thing is that for whatever reason I couldn’t let it go. I kept on dabbling with them every chance I got. Eventually, it has become the only transmission I want. Even in bumper to bumper Dream Cruise traffic I’m always having a good time, even with a tired left leg and my drink 3/4 full. For me, it is not just about exciting shifts, it’s also about the impeccable control and connectedness you get when using any combination of the controls you want, including engine braking, etc. The more you drive, the more you figure out, the more variety of inputs and behaviors, the more fun.
It's never annoyed me driving my manual LS3 in traffic. Love it. And my 2013 1LE locks the brake on hills to prevent rollback and releases after clutch is engaged.

L99 2ss owner here, when you shift the automatic into “M” it actually is the “Sport mode” and will remain in automatic mode, but will shift more aggressively and keep the RPMs in the power band, if you use the shifters it will switch over to manual mode, and you can put it back in automatic either by shifting back to regular “D” drive, or by holding up shift paddle for a second or 2

@@roddycreswell8613This. But I understand wanting fuel economy at the end of the day… I’ve owned newer Honda’s that had variable cylinder management (VCM), which deactivated 3 of 6 cylinders (V6) on the freeway, for economic fuel management. Most people had issues with the earlier models, so there were physical add-on harnesses to disable the control modules, or you could also disable it via software with a flash tuning platform. And yes, the manual models don’t come with economic fuel management systems. It would probably be way too complicated IMO. Most of the automatic models of the cars usually even utilize a different air intake manifold system setup (butterfly valves, etc.).

Common reason for people not liking the l99 much is the fact that they don’t know much about it. It runs best using paddle shifters with PRACTICE, same as standard. Timing has to be exact to avoid the delay from redlining and if you’re driving in any automatic mode, the “delay” is the kick down from a higher gear. Ex, if you’re cruising at 45 the car is in 6th gear. You mash the pedal, it’ll kick down to second gear then haul aah. Quick in drive, faster in sport with competitive mode engaged. (Double tap traction control) also for those who don’t know just hold the upshift to switch from manual back to sport
Hey man I agree def need to practice with the manual mode it’s super fun I didn’t know you can switch back to auto by holding that’s tuff my car just blew up so now it’s getting a ls3 swap in it

great video! after long contemplation, despite desperately wanting the LS3, i went with the L99 convertible mainly for the remote start which can be life saving where i live up north, the DoD does help save a little gas when city driving, and now that i'm a dad with a child seat installed in the car, it's always good to have the extra free hand when there's trouble in the back. no regrets at all, though there are days i dream of letting go of the clutch and taking off!
Both cars are beautiful! But I agree, I live in Southern California and there’s traffic to get into traffic. Horrible for a manual car when I rarely go over 25-45 mph on the freeway coming home from work

Lmfao forreal! But there's merit to the L99. I just can't compromise the driving experience like that. I'd love to daily one for a few days and document how it drives and do a detailed comparison.

For what it’s worth, it’s an absolute beast. Honestly sometimes can’t stand the automatic gear changes, it can just upshift too quickly. Also having some issues with low rpm cold start idle, cam surging, and bucking. But it tolerate it because I know it can be hard to completely tune out. So I mainly use the paddles. Hope to get a manual one day!
I have a fifth generation Indy, 500 car and it is completely stock except for I put a Pedal Commander on it and if you put it in sport mode it is radical. I agree with the manual is more engaging. @Tyler Thompson yup brand new 22 gt, always wanted a mustang but I will get another camaro one day along with the mustang hopefully a manual zl1 or ss 1le💪
I have owned both, actually several of these. The manual is a problem because it never really lets you drive the car. You can turn off all the assist controls, but it still inhibits the car. You can look up other channels and see if you go in to the programming (HP Tuner) and turn things off the car is a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL! as it should be given the horsepower and torque. The automatic with the same assist off is allows a bit more to happen. I really enjoyed the automatic much more, which is a shame. I also had the newer 5.0 Mustang GT in manual and it also has it problems, mainly the shifter will not allow you to have much fun when you are really getting in to it, also lots of videos about this topic. It is a complete shame, these cars could be so much more with just a little work.
How interesting, so most people truly never experience the raw, unfiltered driving experience? Maybe because auto is easier to control, less likely of accidents? Thanks for this man!

Thanks for this video! I really enjoy my '15 2SS 1LE as a second car very much, but agree that it is demanding with the close ratio tranny until you hit fifth and sixth gears for cruising. Lots of fun though. As you described very well, the L99 auto would be a terrific daily driver in traffic I think...absolutely. Both cars look fantastic and have all the handling goodies you want to option from Chevy or add on later. Your personal ride looks great by the way!
Ordered my ‘10 2SS/RA from a dealership, being a paraplegic driver I’m “stuck” with the automatic transmission. I have most of the “bolt-on” upgrades to my L99 V8 and have had the engine & transmission tuned. Having to make a list for when I do crack open the engine to do the L99 to LS3 conversion. But I have a mortgage to pay off first, then my Camaro can get some more attention.
Did you put it in performance mode? Because it shifts differently in that mode. Mine with a trans tune and in performances mode shifts fast a barks the tires in second and third.
I love my LS3. From the factory, day one, the weak part of this car is the clutch disk. The hydraulic clutch disk is not nearly as responsive as the 4 speed manual linkage M22 trans that was in my '66 Chevelle SS with a 427 BB. When time comes to replace the clutch disk assembly I am leaning towards the McLeod setup. Interested in hearing success stories on what brand/styte clutch replacement viewers have opted for? Thanks for a great video.
I had the rxt 1000 hp twin disc setup and after a couple of months it failed on me. I then went with a triple disc from monster clutches and i never looked back. I daily my 840 procharged 2012 camaro ss and I also race it. The clutches from Monster are so good you cant even tell there is a triple disc clutch on the car haha. Over a year now with lots of hard miles and the clutch is still performing like when I first installed it. From them I chose their 1300hp/1300 ft lbs of torque clutch forgot the model. But it is amazing.
Monster street twin good for 700hp. Monster slave. The stock slave is actually what's weak along with the clutch. Then get the tick speed bleeder. It is a life saver when you need to do a fluid change for the brakes. Also icing on the cake is the mgw short throw it makes the car perfect with this clutch. It doesn't chatter or have any bad characteristics like other twin disc. The rest isn't bad either, but when it came to a clutch that was like stock, pedal feel, better engagement etc. The monster wins hands down.
@@98ws6m6cvert i agree with the mgw, for slave cylinder my kit came with it however i upgraded the collar on it to the billet one from tick, and i also got the speed bleeder and separated the clutch reservoir with the gto one. I also got the stainless braided line as well. Doing this with synchromesh from royal purple in my tr6060 I never grind second anymore.

Once you have the trans tune installed you won't need to ever use the paddle shifters. The paddle shifters have so much lag it's ridiculous. I removed the paddle shifted steering wheel and installed the 1le flat bottom manual shift steering wheel. I keep the shifter engaged In sport mode and hang on!
The manual is my ‘15 1LE and the auto in my C5 are both so fun and satisfying, but in very different ways. Neither car is stock, and I really could not choose one over the other.
I've got an L99. Only reason I got this car was because it was a vehicle my sister was getting rid of for cheap. The biggest thing I've figured out about the Camaro community is it's filled with a lot of people full of misinformation. I cannot count how many times I've came across people that want to cam an L99 and think they have to get rid of VVT. ABSOLUTELY NOT. VVT helps keep low end torque, they get rid of it and make it miserable to drive with an aggressive cam down low. The only time it seems to be helpful to get rid of VVT is when you're going balls out maximum effort build, otherwise people are just giving up torque for absolutely no returns. My wife has a Challenger and the Camaro is faster, but throttle response is so poor in these Camaros. I've got to give 3/4 throttle just to get up to highway speed, Challenger is like 1/8th. Yes, I know a tune would fix it, but it's a sports car, it should have had better throttle response from the factory.
Really the only big difference between the two is AFM. Once you get it tuned out, they are pretty much the same car. The different cam, pistons, and crank really don’t make a difference and are most like higher quality because a manual is meant to be and will be driven much harder than the auto. As for the cam, it just slightly more aggressive

L99's are perfect for people that can only drive automatic vehicles. GM knows that inexperienced drivers that require automatic trans also need less engine power...which makes sense. Here are the 3 major internal engine changes designed to reduce engine power on the L99 automatic compared to the LS3 manual- 1. L99 has lower compression ratio vs LS3...To accomplish lower compression for the L99, different pistons are installed = less power 2. L99 uses solid/ heavy intake valves vs the LS3 hollow intake valves allowing the LS3 to rev quicker and higher than the L99 which = more overall power and response with the LS3. 3. L99 to uses a much milder cam vs LS3 which equals much less power throughout the powerband on the L99. Not to mention DOD/variable cam timing and electrical components added to the L99 which reduces the power even further. It will cost several thousand $ to convert the L99 pistons, valves, and cam to LS3 even if you do the engine removal and labor yourself. Search used engine prices for L99 compared to LS3...you'll see the LS3 is much higher priced for the reasons listed above. Converting a L99 to LS3 conversion is a major project. Plus, the M6 is way more fun AND faster if you know how to operate a clutch.

2010 l99 owner Ya need to remove that AMF, it’s not good for the engine to go from 8 cylinder mode to 4. Pretty stupid of Chevy to add that. Got mine taken off with a dyno tune. Also D mode is faster than M sport mode. Yes the suspension and steering will get a bit more tighter and the shifts are more aggressive but that mode is meant more for a track. I have raced several times and noticed that having the car in D mode is always faster than Sport. Specs Airaid CAI Xpipe Highflow cats I live in Cali so long tubes can give you problems when it comes to smog
I haven’t really noticed a speed difference between the two, but I do feel like the sport mode accelerates quicker because of the more aggressive shifts. The only really thing that makes a huge difference between sport and regular is when your taking a tight corner at high speeds. After you take the corner and slow down the car has super aggressive downshifts to the point where it feels like a manual
L99 owner from Sweden here. i will tune the car in a few months with K&N open air filter and Borla S Type catback system. should i tell them to remove AMF?
What camera are you using? just a regular go pro or something more professional? Id like to get some exhaust shots of my c6z, and what mount would you recommend I wouldn't want the camera flying off at 130
cant go wrong with either transmission tbh, if your doing more daily driving with your car or are after serious racing the auto is simply the better option, 3000-4000 stall with a set of short gears in the rear is an absolute blast too drive. if your looking for a car thats simply just fun to have and drive around with your friends the manual will always be the cooler car.
I had the LS3 with manual transmission. I didn't like it, sold the car because of the restrictring feeling of space inside, bad ergonomy for me that I couldn't get used to with time. Why I didn't like the LS3? To me it was rather rough and not smooth, but what bothered me most was the feeling of weak torque in low and mid rpms. C6 from a friend did this way better! It woke up at about 4000 rpm and when it went over 4500 and the max torque was there it pulled like an ox. This might be good for racing, but I 'm no racer. I 'm driving on normal roads in Germany, barely on the Autobahn. When I accelerated with the Camaro for example in 3rd gear and wanted to feel some good torque I had to go way over the the speed limit to let it wake up, not to mention what it's like in the higher gears. So I can only feel the power in the two lowest gears, if I didn't want to drive way too fast all the time and being in danger of losing my drivers licence😀 That's not the torque feel that I expect from a 6.2 litre engine. Before this car I had a 4th gen with LS1 and Automatic transmission, it had a better torque feeling in low and mid rpm and drove more harmoniously to me.
Does it still have the clutch spring installed? Took mine out after a couple months and it feels much better now, haven't had an issue and I've put 20k more miles on it since I took it out.
the afm never really ever comes on unless going down hill or completely off the gas and when you get right back on the gas it will almost instantly use all 8 spark plugs

@@willlloyd7762 I said I hated it at first until I got into a 2014 Z28 and realized that I really like it. I now own a 2010 2SS RS manual, and I realize that the first 2 year release models barely came with anything, and that it wasn’t until the 2013 year model, that really solidified things with the 5.5 gen facelift models.

True. My buddy has 2011 l99. It's nice but I would definitely rather drive mine with the feel and control I have.

@@ShazbotNanewNanew Meaning what?
L99 2ss owner here, when you shift the automatic into “M” it actually is the “Sport mode” and will remain in automatic mode, but will shift more aggressively and keep the RPMs in the power band, if you use the shifters it will switch over to manual mode, and you can put it back in automatic either by shifting back to regular “D” drive, or by holding up shift paddle for a second or 2
Thank you so much for clarifying man!
2013 2ss owner. For the real fun, be in park, hold the brake and then hold the TC button down for several seconds. You'll notice both dash lights come on without it saying Competitive mode in the display....you have just turned the TC and Stabilitrack 100% off....have fun!

Got an L99 and did an LS3 conversion with full bolt ons. Completely woke the car up once all the active fuel management stuff was tuned out
Who buys a V8 Camaro for fuel economy? Nobody.
@@roddycreswell8613This. But I understand wanting fuel economy at the end of the day…
I’ve owned newer Honda’s that had variable cylinder management (VCM), which deactivated 3 of 6 cylinders (V6) on the freeway, for economic fuel management.
How much did this cost you

@@captainamerica9353 I didn't daily the camaro , I daily a 2500hd silverado for fuel efficiency 😂 you're in the wrong channel if you looking at fuel efficient cars

I’ve got a 2013 L99. Long tube headers, heavy stage 2 cam, 3in straight pipe, cold air, bigger performance injectors. I’m making a little more than 450 hp.

Did you sell it and get a mustang

Love my l99 but wish I would have gotten the standard
Both are amazing cars to drive bro :) 😎
Yeah I'm sure once you tweak the transmission for the L99's it's a whole new experience!
That’s right I do have more confidence with High HP cars that are auto. But it takes the fun out of it. My current manual car is a CTSV2.
No wrong active fuel management is junk it is unreliable u can tune it all u want or u can remove it but it will never be as reliable as an Ls3.

L99's are perfect for people that can only drive automatic vehicles. GM knows that inexperienced drivers that require automatic trans also need less engine power...which makes sense. Here are the 3 major internal engine changes designed to reduce engine power on the L99 automatic compared to the LS3 manual-
1. L99 has lower compression ratio vs LS3...To accomplish lower compression for the L99, different pistons are installed = less power

I live in Cali so long tubes can give you problems when it comes to smog
Dude it makes sense when i put it into "s mode i felt the car kinda slow and im like why is that
I haven’t really noticed a speed difference between the two, but I do feel like the sport mode accelerates quicker because of the more aggressive shifts. The only really thing that makes a huge difference between sport and regular is when your taking a tight corner at high speeds. After you take the corner and slow down the car has super aggressive downshifts to the point where it feels like a manual

i will tune the car in a few months with K&N open air filter and Borla S Type catback system.
should i tell them to remove AMF?
What camera are you using? just a regular go pro or something more professional? Id like to get some exhaust shots of my c6z, and what mount would you recommend I wouldn't want the camera flying off at 130
Ive got a 14 manual ls3, sounds and drives amazing only thing i dont like is the stupid skip shift where it tries to lock me out of second
cant go wrong with either transmission tbh, if your doing more daily driving with your car or are after serious racing the auto is simply the better option, 3000-4000 stall with a set of short gears in the rear is an absolute blast too drive. if your looking for a car thats simply just fun to have and drive around with your friends the manual will always be the cooler car.
I would gladly take any one of those cars both are amazing .
Agreed brother!
I'd much rather be driving manual transmission especially in adverse driving conditions I want complete control of my rear axle
Clutch pedal feel sucks on mine, real narrow band of engagement on pedal
Does it still have the clutch spring installed? Took mine out after a couple months and it feels much better now, haven't had an issue and I've put 20k more miles on it since I took it out.
@@markjmarkjack took mine out a long time a go too. It helps, but still sucks lol

The 2013 2ss zl1 model has hill assist where it will engage the brake for you until you let off the clutch
Goals 🙏😂
Ls3 manual is more fun to drive, if you’re only going to use it for drag racing then get the l99 automatic and get rid of the active fuel management.
the afm never really ever comes on unless going down hill or completely off the gas and when you get right back on the gas it will almost instantly use all 8 spark plugs
