I recently test drove a 6th gen zl1. After owning the 5th gen for 5 years, Best way to explain it is the 6th gen literally feels like a sports car going around a track. 5th gen feels like Muscle car that just wants to go straight. I’ve owned a 5th gen for 6 years also, and even after having test driven a 6th gen SS and ZL1 respectively, I still think my 5th handles extremely will. The 6ths are definitely better, and are some of the best track cars out of the box that money can buy, but whenever I take my 5th through some twisties, I’m never not impressed by how composed, flat, and neutral it is.
It’s a car that DOES want to turn, and does so extremely well.

I bought a 2021 Camaro ZL1 with only 3773 miles on it from a Chevrolet dealer in Oregon and I absolutely LOVE this car. I used to have a 1995 Camaro Z-28 and thought that was the best car I ever had but this one most definitely is. Prior to having this car I had never heard of a ZL-1 and I have been pleasantly surprised at how rare it is. I love the comparison between the two cars in your video as well. I may make some engine upgrades on my car as you did. Great video..!

  • @amybills8082
    @amybills8082 13 дней назад

First, great video! I feel like you covered each car, high and low points with genuine reaction to each one. I have been a first gen Camaro fan for as long as I can remember and I grew up in a muscle car family where American Muscle Cars are an integral part of life as I know it. Getting my very own Camaro was one of the best days of my life and smiles per gallon is the best way to put the feeling of owning a Camaro as a daily driver. At some point (when I can afford it) I plan to upgrade my 2014 RS to a V8 Camaro and have spoken to a speed shop about putting a pro-charger on the one I have as an affordable solution but after watching the video it reminds me of the upgrades that aren’t just about horsepower that I would miss out on. I have had several of my other dream cars to play with in recent years including a very spirited Mazda Speed3 where the power to weight ratio is enough to blow your skirt up for sure! So even though it’s only a V6, my RS is definitely my favorite, including a manual transmission 335i, which is actually comparable handling wise, although the Beemer will forever be more composed and the Camaro is certainly a muscle car in every way. Bottom line, I really love that I can put 87 octane in my car and get 32.1 mpg if I set the cruise control on the highway but it’s still one of the most froggy grocery getters out there. I am concerned that the reliability, which has been bombproof so far, would suffer and I already lack the self control not to horse around with the few modes that it has now. 😅 I did change out the taillights because I feel that the designers at Chevy really choked with the 2014 and 2015 taillights. They are beyond remedial and remind me of robot eyes. I found some aftermarket ones by Auto Addict that are patterned after the C08 taillights that really give it the sinister look that I enjoy perpetuating but I love the slightly rough around the edges muscle car grunt and after watching your video, I know I prefer the 5th gen over the 6th for a number of reasons in spite of the upgrades that are probably very nice but not worth losing that rougher first gen-esque feeling. So thanks a million for a very illuminating and thought provoking video!! Keep up the good work! 🫶🏻

I upgraded from a 5th gen SS 1LE to a 6th gen ZL1 1LE. Completely different animals, and I couldn't be happier. 5th gen makes for a better daily driver imo, but the 6th gen is way more enjoyable to drive. I honestly think the 6th gen SS 1LE is the sweet spot, especially if it's your only car. 6th gen ZL1 is an exercise in restraint and dealing with blue balls, it's hard to stretch the legs out without hitting triple digit speeds.

The 5th gens are also a little wider than the 6ths, and have larger more defined hips, as well as those factory fender flares. I absolutely love how the 6ths look, particularly the pre-refresh cars, and ZL1s of course… But the 5th gens just have that perfect combination of aggression and elegance to me, especially the 10-13s.
Those are THE modern interpretation of the 1st gen, and GM absolutely knocked it out of the park. The Halo lights, the round DRLs, the defined and high cowl hood, the fender flares, the massive hips, the gills, the pointed shark nose, chin, and brow, the surprisingly massive front vents, the square indented tail lights… Everything about that design is nigh perfect to me.
EDIT: Just some additional info, the gills were always a cosmetic item on Camaros; they were never functional. I’m not sure what functional purpose they would even serve if they were.

The video is well done. You hit the major points between both cars i think. The 6th gen feels more planted and stiffer. The steering weignt on the 6th gen gives the car a better feel. The standard 5th gen seats, imo, are way more comfortable than the 6th gen Recaros, especially on a long trip.
One thing to point out, the 6th gen does not have a 35 series side wall like the 5th gen. Its 30.
I have a 2013 1LE and my wife has a 22 SS 1LE with the 10 speed. This video is a pretty close representation of SS 1LE vs SS 1LE. When my car was FBO making 462whp and 460wtq we were door to door. The 10 speed is a cheat code.

    Very interesting comparison!👍
I owned a red 5th gen '14 ZL1 AT with the carbon package, black wheels and the Recaro seats, it had a very retro muscle car look, always received a lot of thumbs up that I didn't received with my C7 Stingray Z51 and neither with my Porsche Carrera. I compared my car with the new 6th gen Camaro SS and it didn't had that looks, the 5th gen had usable rear seats but the 6th gen doesn't allow nobody to seat behind. The bolstering on my ZL1 Recaros gave you a secure driving position for the track but they were a pain to go over their bolstering to seat for DD and specially when I parked next to a car or in my garage because of the needed wide opening of the doors.
When I traded my 5th gen ZL1 for my dream car a C7 Corvette Stingray Z51. It felt almost as fast, but it was because it was lightweight compared to the heavy 5th gen Camaro. But they have 580 HP of the ZL1 VS 460 HP of the Corvette a huge difference of power.
MT mentioned that the 6th gen Camaro SS1LE was similar or better in performance compared to the 5th gen Camaro ZL1 & Z28. That is oustanding! And of course the 6th gen ZL1 its a monster in performance.
Later on I bought a 6th gen Camaro SS 6MT that I considered a perfect performance balanced street or track sport car for the money.
Where I think that GM failed was to not give a more distinctive rear look to both the 5th and 6th gen ZL1 & SS1LE compared to lesser Camaros, they look almost the same from the back view.
I consider that both 5th & 6th gen ZL1s and maybe also the SS1LE would become classicals and keep their price up because rarely are seen on the streets.👍

This. Everyone always judges cars based on numbers but sometimes it ain't just about numbers. You can mod the 5th gen to be comparable to modified 6th gens the 6th is just better out the box. Numbers wise anyways that says nothing for the feel of the car and engagement and fun you can. I prefer cars from that era they're still pretty modern but feel and sound alot better vs newer stuff and they can be modified to be crazy fast if that's what you want.

The first time I sat in a 6th gen Camaro I hated the two bumps over the gage cluster. Absolutely stupid design that seems to be wanting to swallow you. It' already enough these cars feels like caves when getting in, you don't need that The 5th gen is better in ths regard. Not saying the 5th gen has better materials, no it doesn't. The 6th gen is the better car for a lot of reasons. But that dashboard broke the deal. So 5th gen it was and I never looked back! I don't care if you pass me on the highway. I enjoy my car!

Iv owned the 5 now the 6 the handling is night and day 6 gen all the way. Only thing 5 gen was better more rear seat room.
Other than that cant think of anything else. The alpha chassis is an over achiever the 5 gen impala chassis under achiever. Not saying with enough money and parts the 5 can’t be great because it can be. But it will never be as good as the 6.

The tail lights arent retro at all on the 5th gen because the 67 68 camaro didn't have light that looked like a vet nore were they small squares they were rectangles they looked more simular to the 6th gen except the 6th gen was modeled after the iconic 69 whivh had the same rectangles but on the outer ends angle out however missed the mark on the front lights in comparison to the 69. However the 69 had hidaways so to that i say fair game. Both are great the 5th and 6th gen. An intake doesnt do much for you and almost nothing without a tune unless they come with crap intakes which i doubt they do. And if you did gain its because of the tune pulling up the majority. And lastly you cant even test an intake on a dyno its stationary where fans do less than actual driving. The fifth gen is a muscle car the 6th gen is a sports car.

It also costs alot more money. A 5th gen can be modified to be comparable to modified 6th gens. The 6th is "better" numbers to numbers out of the box everyone knows that. It also costs alot more as I mentioned. The 5th gen zl1 is a bargain for the money and can be made very capable with the right tweaks. .

I couldnt spend the money and not recieve a tremec 6 speed with a short throw from factory. I really feel like people who argue on auto vs manual just can't drive manual. Everyone in the car has more fun in a manual and theres more skill to hone which is fun. Only valid arguement is Dailey, anyone using "🤓 actually auto is faster" doesn't count because you're not racing for money to make it count? Like you're not gonna make enough to pay for the loss of musclecar feel
