BEAST MODE!!! I have 50 MDs from as early as 99 and 2001 and several years later that I have had no way to immortalize until I found this video. My two recorders broke and I just got a “newer” used old NE410 and followed this video. Imported as wav and everything works, this is a game changer!!!! THANK YOU!!! This was never possible with my older home recorders. You saved so many original recordings I can never recreate (hardware synthesizers and drum machines have all died) - eternally grateful: RESPECT
I have so much live music recorded on mini disc that I want to get into the computer so I can upload them as audio files to RUclips, to share with the world!
Hello from Paris, France. I have a MZ-N910 and I managed to record (in realtime) via an audio cable until I found this video. It works and it's quicker than by the cable. I thought it couldn't be possbile because of the hardware. Thank you so much, I can digitalize the piano recordings of my late father. 🙏🙏
Funny. Techmoan talking about this application 2 days ago. I love this application. I use this one already 2 years. And still the best application for minidisc
Whats the wire called that goes from back of minidisc player to laptop is it a phono lead ie ( red and black wire from back of minidisc player ) to a usb that plugs into a usb on the laptop ?? Any help i would be greatfull for
How do i connect mini discp layer to laptop as back of minidisc as red and white [ think they called phone port ] conections and laptop only has usb and hdmi do i need a special cable or something
which machine do you have? i have the Sony MZ-N510 Type S, but it doesn't seem to let me download (it just give an option of playing it over an analogue output) thanks so much! Great tutorial!
Anyone watching this a year later. It does work on an MZ-N510. We have to enable homebrew mode as per the video but it works. It's somewhat flaky and can fail (you just unplug, restart the app (if using electron client) and remove the battery for a second) It also absolutely rinses through AA batteries so be sure to have a stack of rechargeable ready to go, or have the PSU handy.
i have an "MD WALKMAN MZ-NHF800" i've tried ur solutions but when i try to connect it on the website it says no compatible devices found (using windows 11)
Sadly I wouldn't be surprised one bit if that's a Windows 11 issue, which seems to have broken a lot of older drivers and such. Also, are you using Edge to try and connect it? While it's a chromium browser all the same, sometimes it seems Edge in particular doesn't like doing things "normally". I don't have W11 or Edge, so I can't say either of these for certain though.
One thing that you didn't mention which initially caused me problems. If you have already loaded the Sony NetMD drivers then the online program won't work. It has to be the WinUSB driver to work in the online program. I still have one of my laptops running the SonicStage software as that is the only one that supports HiMD.
It does not seem that way, as the device doesn't even have a USB port of any kind. You'd likely need to get another minidisc player, unfortunately, or if you want to keep using the MDS-E10, transfer the discs the "old" way by using one of the audio outputs and recording in real time.
Hi, can I just come back to the beginning of this video.... and forgive me if this is a silly question but what cable are you using to connect your MD player to your pc? I have a Sharp SR-40 and I've been thinking about buying a simple "out" jack (headphones size) to USB cable to transfer, but what exactly are you using?
Unfortunately it seems your player doesn't have a USB port, in which case this definitely won't work. So you can either get a different one (with a usb port), but that'll cost more, OR you can go through the analog out port, either into a stereo analog in on your computer, or barring that using that usb cable you mentioned in your comment, although then this method won't work and you'll have to manually record the minidiscs in real time.
@@dabhdude thanks for the reply, I should have said: I intend to connect the MD player using the headphones jack (using the 3.5mm jack) and then connect to pc using the USB. But if i do it this way, I won't be able to use your method? If so, I'm curious to better understand your setup.
It has been a few months and while I figure this is pretty late (sorry) I'll say that the setup is finding a minidisc player that has a usb port on it and running a usb cable from that port over to the computer. That's basically the whole setup. That should not be confused with using an audio out to usb cable, since the process mentioned in the video doesn't work like that.
@@jonathancollins1758a year later but you should have realised by now you need a NetMD capable minidisc player. It won't work with Sharp minidisc players, only players with NetMD are Sony as far as I'm aware.
ffmpeg -i "Track 1.aea" "Track 1.flac" or ffmpeg -i "Track 1.aea" "Track 1.mp3" There are also ways to re-encode more then one file at once. But I'm thinking I should build a tool that should do the re-encoding and id3 tags based on the ToC all at once. Thanks for the tutorial though, it was a good starter.
That'd obviously be faster. This is more as a starter for those who don't have a ton of minidiscs (and also bringing out the ffmpeg commands might throw some people off). A tool to re-encode based on the ToC would likely be useful to many. (Also I pity anyone who's still encoding into mp3 now)

Hi. How did you connect the MD player to the computer? Thanks Dennis
@@FireiskLtd Hi, there is a USB output on the right side of this model (N910). The cable is a mini USB to USB.
Thank you.

Thanks a lot for the info. What is the aprox time needed to complete download a 74 minutes minidisc to the PC with your equipment?
Huge help, thank you so much! Found some old mini discs and wanted to transfer them. Thanks a million for making it understandable and easy!

What OS are you running to do this? Win7 or Win10?
I was using 7, though since the application is browser based, it shouldn't matter what you use. I'm aware of people who have used W10 for this too.

Fantastic guide. Solved all of my problem in win 10 64 bit!!!
What cable do you use to connect the mini disc player to laptop/USB C please? Thanks.
Mine (and I assume most others) used Mini USB to USB A. I'd just get one of those cables and then use an adapter to USB C.
