Devs replaced by accountants and execs. Real gamers replaced by quick-insta-fame-fake-gurus. By people who, in past, called us 'losers' cuz we were gamers or loved Anime. I recently made a John Wick style action montage using Splinter Cell Blacklist stylish takedowns. Looks badass with music I chose. If only we got a proper John Wick game that way, Ubisoft could license, too late now...

They did it to themselves! Ubisoft should have kept on moving towards The Division Franchise instead of making Star Wars and Avatar. Heartland should have been released instead of cancelled. Now, Ubisoft has XDefiant, Avator, Star Wars, Skull and Bones all taking a MASSIVE L! They didn't listen to us, now they have to pay the price for their poor decisions. The industry as a whole is at a crossroads. I am old enough that my first game system was an atari and most games I played in an arcade. Over the years, games went from being made by gamers for gamers to being made by decisions influenced by corporate boards and bean counters. The market is flooded with junk with all sorts of loot style boxes and outfits to make quick cash grabs. Call it woke if you like (hate that term) but the reality is trying to make a game for everyone makes a game for a select few. Bean counters and board members should get out of the way of the creative types and let them do what they do best. They will make more money with fewer franchises that people fall in love with due to excellent design and great game play. Also, listen to your community. They are your customers.

I believe 2024 has been the greatest year in game releases.
Enshrouded, Helldivers2, Manor Lords, Satisfactory, Star Trucker (to name but a few) have all come from AA studios.
These games were designed by passionate developers who wanted to create fantastic worlds that adhered to their vision. They weren’t having to hit some BS deadline because shareholders were looking for a return, they could take their time and get it right and stay true to their vision.
AAA gaming was given a substantial slap in the face this year with multiple big projects falling flat on their faces. If they’re going to learn something from the why of that, it’s to get the bean counters out of the hair of the developers, let them put their passion front and centre…the money will roll in, as has been proven….you greedy, greedy bastards.

I've been a gamer since the early 80s starting with arcade games and branching to console/PC games beginning in the mid 80s. For GenX gamers, this isn't something new to us. When this happened I was playing arcade games, which had been hurt by the release of consoles in the 70s but arcadess and computer games did fairly better when this occured. There was a massive videogames crash in 83 that wiped out about 80% of the industry in the US. The crash was caused by multiple factors that came together to create one massive perfect storm in the industry. A huge factor was the fact that the market was oversaturated with terrible games, with the huge boom of console games, it was like the gold rush but with everyone trying to get into the industry (most being people who had no idea what they were doing and others being companies trying to take advantage of it for marketing other products). Atari and Activision were some of the few companies that survived, with Atari never fully recovering from it.
The circumstances we're seeing are different but the affects are very similar to what happened in causing the crash in 83. There's some very good things to come from that crash too, first is that almost all the companies to not survive were making terrible games. The crash cleared out these companies and made room for newer companies such as EA to replace them with good games. A second one is that in the aftermath of the crash, companies started setting in place standards that not only helped with avoiding another crash but helped improve the industry and the quality of games, making companies compete in pushing for better games. This is what caused such great games from the mid 80s-2000s.
What's going on in the industry now is that activists are trying to destroy the industry and companies intentionally. This is also occuring after they chased off/forced out most of the older devs who helped make the industry so great. The only problem with their thinking is that gamers are far more aware and informative than they believe. Also, they may destroy a number of AAA companies that have gotten way to greedy and started doing predatory practices on their consumers, but that's also a good thing. This clears out these companies that have become rotten, along with the activists, and opens up space for newer companies that want to make good games for gamers (many of which are also going back to better standards that AAA companies have abandoned) to replace the AAA companies. The activists, despite not liking gamers and gamers not liking them, are actually doing us a favor and they're not even realizing it. Which I find boththoroughly entertaining and very hilarious.

Gamer wars are being fought on so many different social media platforms that it’s insane. When you think of the fact there are Dev‘s that are “bleeding out” all over social media about toxic this, incell that, when not even as much as a few years back in the infamous “gamer gate“ situation that had Devs going against Devs to prove some type of point of how the gaming community is harsh and cruel when in fact, it was self-inflicted but yet somehow spilled out to being the consumer/gamers who are all man babies is incredible to understand. The big gaming companies want to turn their distress and depression upon the very ones who have funded their lifestyles to date. It’s really pathetic where we find ourselves in this age where again the people who are spending their hard earned cash on nerdy activities are being harassed by the entertainment, industry, and being told that we should not expect things to go our way, and in the meantime, shut up and just consume. What type of foolish mentality is that? What I’m finding to be refreshing as of late, is the fact that the consumer/gamers are beginning to realize their true power and that is the ability to not say a word but simply purchase or not, and it has toppled even the mighty gaming companies. It’s gonna continue to bea fight yet ultimately the gamer can win. All thanks too the power to consume with discretion. Simply put an educated consumer is the best buyer.

the mistakes they made with japanese culture and they dont forgive easily in japan. the mistakes were stupid with the offensive toy, chinese architecture (being completely blind to thousands of years of hostility between imperial china and imperial japan) and things like the stereotype of ninjas dressed in black (which is a kabuki convention to indicate 'you dont see this character/stagehand' to the audience - ninja in real life dressed like the people they would have to hide among, just like modern intelligence agents).
they did alright in europe with historical settings. i dont know how they messed up so big in shadows. maybe marketing said 'add in a black character for that audience market, and maybe make the ninja a girl to get women wanting to buy it, and find something cool for a toy - they have a really cool half gate thing in nagasaki, we could -' i mean, marketing isnt interested in historical accuracy or respect. they want to appease minorities so they buy it, and assume every gamer who isnt a minority will buy it anyway because assassins are cool. or because they bought the last one. only i did make the mistake of buying the last one and it was too rigidly like the original assassins creed and i found i didnt want that after the open world games anymore.
but the same time, they were bleeding money on skull and bones thanks to the deal with singapore government, which when that game didnt look like it could be an mp battle royale black flag they couldnt just kill it. they chose to remaster black flag because it would be cheaper to smooth the animations and update for 4k graphics and i would buy it. even tho i own it already. that would be why they were remastering then, because its revenue stream for players who never played those older games but turn up their noses at the less pretty graphics.
i too worry about ubisoft. its criminal the way they ignored and interfered with the division games. okay the gear system got out of hand on the first game. and maybe the map was so big including the dark zone they couldnt add proper raids and turn it into live service.
but if they remaster the first game, and add raids, and do a live service story, i would certainly buy and play that in preference to the strange washington dc map. the empty but not empty dead city where any survivors with any sense wouldnt be scavenging for canned food but leaving the city to run a farm for food. however can they really go through with the division 3? it would have to be set even later, with the strange anomaly of a high tech bad guy force, division tech somehow working despite clearly there not being manufacturing infrastructure OR logistics for any high tech capable force to exist in a world more than decimated by green poison. i had no trouble with vanilla setting and campaign, but black tusk cannot exist in such a world or the government would have just used the army to achieve all the goals of nat and mcmanus.
ellis could just have ordered the division to fall in line, and most would. but the thing with the division is the mission isnt serving the president. they have no rules or limits - which is why when ISAC says an agent is rogue its an indication someone is manipulating it because... there can be no rogues. there are no limits on an agent except saving what remains (which is why we stopped the missile in new york - too much collateral damage, not enough saving what remains).
saving what remains and continuity of government was the intent of the legal framework; which is why ellis could have just used the army - if black tusk had the weapons and tech and drones so would US army. black tusk would be conscripted as special unit. the division would then see the continuity of government and obey the president if ordered to disband or to join up - their job was done. they'd saved what remained. the government was back in control.
yet we dont have that. we have the whole keener story (keener for president! putting it out there). so what will happen after brooklyn storywise? will we even see that dlc or div 3 with ubi in the state it is? sure someone might buy ubi but it will more than likely just be a slash and burn asset strip. the best devs maybe snapped up along with studios by other publishers. the unique IP revert to disney or other owner and the division IP sold to tencent to make smartphone crap out of for max gouging of players in pasia2win.
thats what worries me. ubisoft messed up division 2 by interfering with the darkzone in washington for sure, maybe they wanted a new pvp esport, that was a little different. it killed the darkzones in div 2 for most including me. then either ubi or massive screwed up world tiers by making them one way only or delete the unplayable character. nothing wrong with the div 1 world tiers. people want harder difficulty? make a new set of world tiers above the top one, with a different enemy AI. done. but they tried to fix players moaning about not having willpower - sorry, that it was too easy to drop difficulty if the game got too hard to be fun. and that nixed the world tiers for me so when the campaign was done i moved on.
and then they did the same crap with WoNY. one way trip and worse, the most ridiculously unfun keener fight where you cant use anything that makes a division agent unique. it may as well have been the token campaign of call of duty. no wonder the dlc failed so badly. i must have merely been one among many silent people who hated that prison map and deleted the agent and didnt do endgame because only level 30 and didnt want to be trapped in ny level 40.
and because those mistakes ubi dropped the whole IP and moved the massive team to other projects. another big error on their part.
    thats enough analysis-ranting from me.

I find the concept of Japanese players (and if they aren't "players" why would Ubisoft care) being offended by certain game mechanics slightly hilarious. Considering how western culture and black and/or white characters are portrayed in manga/games/comics etc. As for the Star Wars game, Disney is toxic to about every license they have acquired in the last 10 years or so.

I personally don't believe in a woke agenda that's killing creativity or a go woke go broke mentality.I don't think that's really a thing, at least not for most gamers. I simply believe that they just missed the mark on what people, particularly their core fan base want from Ubisoft. Could be wrong but I don't believe people were ever really clamoring for a Avatar game. Star Wars Outlaws in theory is a interesting story, that might have made a good one off movie, ie Rogue One. But along with a few game mechanics that weren't great, I think you face a uphill battle when you center the game around a MC that's not a jedi/sith, a mandalorian or a bounty hunter in the outfit of Boba Fett. I mean Jedi Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor were wildly successful and there wasn't a ton of grit in it. I'm also not sure exactly the amount of grit one can expect from a Star Wars game, especially in the Disney Era. I mean it's Star Wars not GTA. I understand it delves into the underworId and I can't speak for the comics but there hasn't been anything within Star Wars media or games I can't think of anything that's depicted it as being too crazy. I think Xdefiant suffered from them not releasing the game earlier. The delays killed momentum and it's hard to gain market share on it's direct competitor, Call of Duty which no matter how good or bad the game is, people are going to buy and play if nothing out of sheer habit. At the end of the day I believe they just keep pouring money into IPs we don't want and neglecting the ones that we do. I mean the Division 2 was released in 2019 and still has a player base despite the lack of content and they were going to discontinue support all together. On one of their most popular franchises. We've been waiting for Division 3 for years. We've been waiting for the next Ghost Recon for years. The last Splinter Cell came out in what? 2013??? Assassin's Creed has been consistent but it feels like it's gotten away, at least to me, from the initial story that had drawn me in. And there's nothing wrong from exploring different stories and genre's and what not, but you can't neglect your core products as a result. It's like going to your favorite pizza spot that makes great slices and they get away from that and start selling soup. You have to play to your fan base.
