Kenny Vance was a member of Jay & The Americans in the '60s and also served as Jay Black's bandleader. He was the man who gave Donald Fagen & Walter Becker (Steely Dan) their first professional jobs out of college, working in Jay's backing band on tour (they only appeared on one track of an album while they were in the band). Jay fired them because they goofed around constantly on stage and in rehearsal but Kenny really liked them and helped them get songwriting gigs for ABC-Dunhill Records in Los Angeles. The rest is Steely Dan history. Thanks for reacting to this, Harri. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Kenny is still with us in his 80s. And still lives in Brooklyn!
I watched that performance as it aired on PBS. Chills and Goosebumps and watering eyes ensued! What a beautiful song!
Kenny Vance was the Music Supervisor on Eddie and the Cruiser’s, and Wrote and Produced a Song in Streets of Fire. He’s a Gem! 💎
And Kenny can sing Cara Mia just about as well as Jay. It’s on RUclips somewhere.
I grew up in N.Y. in the early 60's and and it was a common to see DooWop groups singing in school bathrooms, subway stations and anywhere they could find an echo. I appreciate you Harri for recognizing that talent. I am giving them a rating of 10. Thanks

Thanks so much for playing this - it's one of my favourite doo-wop songs (and I love doo-wop). It was an era where real talent counted - no auto-tune, backing tracks, over-processed studio vocals. Too many modern singers simply can't sing without the foregoing. If you've never heard Jay & the Americans "Cara Mia" - that'll blow your mind too.

Kenny and Jay Black co-founded Jay And The Americans…Kenny was a music producer, songwriter and singer, and toured the country for many years until his health began to fail…he is well respected in the music industry, and still does an occasional concert…a really good guy, and a pioneer of DooWop

I saw them in southeast Florida, opening act for Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn bridge. They did a couple of duets. If you like doo woo please check out Johnny Maestro you won’t be disappointed

A classic not to miss: the original ''Rumble'' by Link Wray. Only instrumental song to be banned from the airwaves.
Great song. Prefer the version by Ol’ 55 in 1976 but that’s possibly cause I grew up with it.
Some consider this to be the very last true (non revival) doowoo song.
