Sophie, I have a recommendation for you once you finish AoT - an anime called Monster (genre: crime, mystery, psychological thriller). It's truly a mastierpiece, based on a manga by Urasawa Naoki. To this day, nothing really comes close for me (besides AoT). Sorry for the off topic, but the thought came to me when you said you are interesed in psychological thrillers and serial killers. Monster has that, but it's also so much more than that. It's deep and very layered, moving and thought-provoking story. I'm convinced you'll absolutely love it. Urasawa's other stories (like Pluto) are woth reccomending as well, especially since Pluto got an anime adaptation recently.
Omg I remember watching this a few years ago! It was very enticing and interesting at first but it got too complex for me to understand & follow the plot and characters after the first few episodes so I left it. It'd be amazing if someone like sophie reacts to it so I can watch along with them and actually understand and enjoy it.

But I absolutely love this story ever since I've read the manga. I enjoy smartly written, deeply psychological stories about human nature that I can analyze, and I love different themes in this story, shown through different people the protagonist encounters in his journey, and the complexity of it all. Plus, the antagonist was one of the most fascinating antagonists in any media that I've consumed (not saying any names because it's spoiler terytory). It's also very interesing to me, since Monster is set in central Europe, where I'm from, and during very interesing time in recent European history. So it would be really fascinating to hear Sophie's take on it. I think she would have a blast.
I actually have that written down!! My moderator is a big fan and recommended Monster to me for the very same reasons so I'll make sure to react to it possibly after Death Note! I never fully caught what he said at 21:45 until now. Light literally said he would take out people who harass others, and people doing other things he deems immoral, quietly with illness and accidents. The truly bad are made examples of with heart attacks while the inconvenient and unwanted are removed silently. His perfect world is terrifying!

I don’t know how many anime you’re taking on at once but Vinland Saga is great. Especially for a literary doctor. It has a much different pacing than AOT and Death Note and has an emotional awareness that is all its own.
I'm probably only going to do 2 series at a time just because it's a lot of work filming and editing as just 1 person! But I'll definitely add it to the list of what to watch!

About the judgement part. I always found that, while openly showing Light as evil for what he's done, the anime/manga never really did show *why* just going after criminals is wrong (And I'm not talking about anything else done in the rest of the anime/manga. Just the notion of killing criminals). This story seems to actually think that punishment, a severe punishment, has a real effect on crime, when actually we know that this is not the case. Also, we know that acting on the sociological an economic conditions that led to the conditions that make crime rise is actually better to prevent crime than punishing the already existing crimes. Light thinks of crime and of the problems with society not in terms of systems and context, but in terms of bad people vs good people. And I think "Death Note" never gets the ability to correctly criticize that worldview. (Again this is not a spoiler, just my impression on the themes and the way they are portrayed, and I never finished it, not because of this criticism but because of other factors that doesn't diminish the quality of the anime)
I just wanted to leave my recommendation here too: "My Hero Academia". It's literally one of my favourite animes! My Hero Academia is a treasure trove for analyzing plots, character development, and thematic depth. It has a diverse cast of characters with complex backstories, and the blend of action and emotional depth will provide ample material for insightful reactions/analyses. I won't say any further now because well, spoilers! lol. Do note that it's a shonen style anime and also is pretty long (7 seasons/159 episodes rn). I really hope that you will consider reacting to it in the near future.
Hard disagree. It can't stand beside shows like AOT and DT. You need another of similar quality. Also, it doesn't seem to fit her interests in literature.

Oof. If you're looking to get your soul crushed and buried in darkness you could go ahead and round things out with the 1997 version of Berserk (which I actual do highly recommend, just with reservations). If you want the opposite of that, I'd recommend Ah, My Goddess.
I actually want to watch Berserk so badly primarily because it inspires Miyazaki heavily with Souls and Elden Ring! I'd love to be able to do a cross analysis between Berserk and the game series at some point!!

If you want cute and fun, I'd recommend Spy x Family, possibly people recommended it too :D Also, to reaffirm other suggestions: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (great character development, strong female depiction too as you pointed this out in AoT) Hunter x Hunter (honestly, one of the best) Mushishi (very magical) Cowboy Bebop (a cyberpunk classic)
Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist are on my list so will definitely get to them as soon as I can! Just can't overdo it as each edit for RUclips takes me around 2 hours so can't add too much to my backlog right now! :D
love seeing you branch out to more anime, if you do want something more cute and wholesome to balance out all the dark and gritty of aot and death note, i would recommend "K-on" (a slice of life series about a group of girls forming a band) or "toradora" (a romance where the lead characters are trying to help each other because they both like the others best friend)
Ohhh I'll add it to the list!! Yeah - I have been really enjoying what I've seen so far and I definitely want to dedicate this channel to anime and discovering the deep storylines and themes that exist, maybe even do comparisons between similar series!
If you want a varied anime experience some good choices would be Frerien , Love is hard for an Otaku , 91 Days , Cowboy Bebop , Spy x Family , Onihei , Barakamon , Summer Wars , Black Lagoon , Mahoutsukai no Yome and Youjo Senki .I left off any sports or idol anime because they are less likely to appeal to a literature scholar .
I'm super excited that you're watching two of my three favorite animes!! (attack on titan, death note and my hero academia in this order) I don't wanna give you heavy spoilers but I think the reason I like these so much is because they do a great job at incorporating magical elements in a realistic human society. you gotta love a fantasy based series that doesn't shy away from real life issues❤

If you like something a little cutesy but still have good characters, dark theme and great writing. I recommend watching Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood. Thought i grew up watching the original i like brotherhood version better. And also maybe frieren too beautiful animation and emotional stories.
You should also react to frieren beyond journey's end. I will be pretty good balance between anime's like ATTACK ON TITAN and DEATHNOTE, the writing is absolute, and everyone loves it.
Omg snk and death note for ur firts two anime 😂 u might need to watch an anime that is actualy light hearted along side like palate cleanser because those hit heavy on the heart 😅

if you want a romantic anime i would say "Hatsukoi Limited" or "Prison School"(lol) a cute anime Azumanga Daioh but if you reaaally wants to start from the beginning... super old cute romantic classic....just like a tv drama... the original "Candy Candy"...yep, without Candy Candy there would be no such thing as anime. sadly...it is about 100 eps...so is not for everyone.
If you want a real deep psychological thriller you should watch Monster, but its not as mainstream as death note. Makes death note seem so basic and shallow in comparison.

And here I thought I've found another cool channel but nope, can't watch it when you can barely see anything. It still throws me off that there are some new reactors that watch this in Japanese with subtitles. Like this is one of those rare few animes that is generally accepted to have one of the best dubs out there that ive gotten too used to people watching it in dub. 😂
Suggestion for a midterm project to up the quality of the reactions: You could think about a good background instead of blurring it out. Eg: -neutral, light colors with some lights, plants, books, flowers… -little bit more nerdy with anime merch etc. (if you are into that) -something else entirely Either way it would help with brand recognition. Could think further down the line and create a dedicated space for product placements in the background or plug some own merch. May be also create some character as a brand symbol and create a stuffed animal kind of version of it to integrate in the set up. Get a second camera angle to switch to when going on with a rant / theory while show is paused… Stuff like this can start small and get more detailed and sophisticated over time with experience and funds. Just some food for thought from an entrepreneur-enthusiast 😁✌🏼
It's a large open space behind me so it's not possible to set things up. Where the plugs are in my office and how large my desk is restricts where it can be placed so I don't have a wall directly behind me or anything to set up against it, again, it's a large open space so any furniture directly behind me is going to look weird but also make the room difficult to move around in. Trust me. I've been creating content for 4 years and a background was something I always looked into but with the space I'm in - it's not feasible. The second camera angle costs money that I don't have right now. This is my full time job so until it pays the bills + extra income. That's also not possible.
I feel he falls into that category because he lacks empathy and doesn't see what he's doing as wrong. He has a grandiose idea that he is above everyone around him. Sociopathy also goes hand in hand with the God Complex. But there can be cross overs between Sociopathy and Psychopathy which makes them hard to distinguish at times / diagnose because there's a lot of cross over traits! I feel that Light is more Sociopathic because he does form emotional attachments with his family in a way that Psychopaths struggle to do. He also recognises that his actions are wrong but rationalises it whereas psychopaths don't. He also is quite rash in how he acts. However, he does fit into some of the traits for psychopathy so I think there's an argument to be made for him being one or the other!

Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist are on my list so will definitely get to them as soon as I can! Just can't overdo it as each edit for RUclips takes me around 2 hours so can't add too much to my backlog right now! :D

love seeing you branch out to more anime, if you do want something more cute and wholesome to balance out all the dark and gritty of aot and death note, i would recommend "K-on" (a slice of life series about a group of girls forming a band) or "toradora" (a romance where the lead characters are trying to help each other because they both like the others best friend)
Ohhh I'll add it to the list!! Yeah - I have been really enjoying what I've seen so far and I definitely want to dedicate this channel to anime and discovering the deep storylines and themes that exist, maybe even do comparisons between similar series!

Would've wanted to have both the first two episodes together, because episode 1 is just setup, and episode 2 is where things pick up.
If you want a varied anime experience some good choices would be Frerien , Love is hard for an Otaku , 91 Days , Cowboy Bebop , Spy x Family , Onihei , Barakamon , Summer Wars , Black Lagoon , Mahoutsukai no Yome and Youjo Senki .I left off any sports or idol anime because they are less likely to appeal to a literature scholar .
Monogatari series is super cute with good dialogue between characters

I don't wanna give you heavy spoilers but I think the reason I like these so much is because they do a great job at incorporating magical elements in a realistic human society. you gotta love a fantasy based series that doesn't shy away from real life issues❤

If you're looking for another good anime (maybe for later, 3 on the go is a bit much), I'd recommend either Sousou no Frieren or Psycho-Pass.

If you like something a little cutesy but still have good characters, dark theme and great writing. I recommend watching Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood. Thought i grew up watching the original i like brotherhood version better. And also maybe frieren too beautiful animation and emotional stories.

You should also react to frieren beyond journey's end. I will be pretty good balance between anime's like ATTACK ON TITAN and DEATHNOTE, the writing is absolute, and everyone loves it.

It still throws me off that there are some new reactors that watch this in Japanese with subtitles. Like this is one of those rare few animes that is generally accepted to have one of the best dubs out there that ive gotten too used to people watching it in dub. 😂
I'm only 3 episodes in so can easily switch to the dub and see how I feel on that haha!
Suggestion for a midterm project to up the quality of the reactions:
You could think about a good background instead of blurring it out.
Eg:
-neutral, light colors with some lights, plants, books, flowers…
-little bit more nerdy with anime merch etc. (if you are into that)
-something else entirely
Either way it would help with brand recognition. Could think further down the line and create a dedicated space for product placements in the background or plug some own merch. May be also create some character as a brand symbol and create a stuffed animal kind of version of it to integrate in the set up.
Get a second camera angle to switch to when going on with a rant / theory while show is paused…
Stuff like this can start small and get more detailed and sophisticated over time with experience and funds.

It's a large open space behind me so it's not possible to set things up. Where the plugs are in my office and how large my desk is restricts where it can be placed so I don't have a wall directly behind me or anything to set up against it, again, it's a large open space so any furniture directly behind me is going to look weird but also make the room difficult to move around in.
Trust me. I've been creating content for 4 years and a background was something I always looked into but with the space I'm in - it's not feasible.
The second camera angle costs money that I don't have right now. This is my full time job so until it pays the bills + extra income. That's also not possible.
After AoT , Watch Vinland Saga. The writer are same.
Death Note is actually one of the few anime with a fantastic english dub if you are so inclined
this is one of those anime that have a Great english voice acting , i think you can try that one.
You should watch this in English its soo good and the Japanese translations for this anime are so bad

Light's a sociopath? I thought he was a psychopath. Or am I confusing the meanings?
This disorder can cause you to lack empathy, which means you don't care about or understand other peoples' feelings.
I feel he falls into that category because he lacks empathy and doesn't see what he's doing as wrong. He has a grandiose idea that he is above everyone around him. Sociopathy also goes hand in hand with the God Complex. But there can be cross overs between Sociopathy and Psychopathy which makes them hard to distinguish at times / diagnose because there's a lot of cross over traits!
I feel that Light is more Sociopathic because he does form emotional attachments with his family in a way that Psychopaths struggle to do. He also recognises that his actions are wrong but rationalises it whereas psychopaths don't. He also is quite rash in how he acts. However, he does fit into some of the traits for psychopathy so I think there's an argument to be made for him being one or the other!
