You can understand how Light ended up the way he did when the entire class is messing around and talking, and yet the teacher CONSTANTLY calls on him to answer, which he always gets correct, told how great he is, and the cycle is repeated despite it boring the hell out of him. He's been told he's perfect his entire life.
another problem is, he is really intelligent and that high intellect amplifies his already huge ego. He thinks he is the most amazing person there is, because of how much smarter he is than all the people he knows. Thats why he immediately fell for L's trap because he would never have considered that there is someone smart enough to trick him.
I suppose it's part of the same trait. "I'm delivering righteous judgement," and his belief that he's untouchable. On some level Light must love having Ryuk around to brag to.
This 2nd episode is what cemented my interest for this show back in my teenagehood when it'd get randomly broadcast on a tv channel. The fact it was psychological, paranormal and also detective work was so exciting to watch, trying to figure out mistakes or ways each could catch each other.

I do understand that Light convinced himself that he is doing something good and that he is helping. But in this episode we see that merely challenging his authority is enough to face his judgement.
