the reason L was so happy when Misa's phone rang was because that's when he was absolutely certain that light was kira, as well as misa being the second kira.

Because he knew that if Light called it, and they were Kira and second Kira like he suspects, he was going to try to get Misa to kill L since Misa would be able to finally see L's name for the first time at the current moment if she was the second Kira. And what do you know, RIGHT after this, L tells the task force that if he dies within the next couple weeks, to assume that Light and Misa are Kira and second Kira, thus trapping Light and Misa into not being able to kill him anymore.

L was literally destroying kira until an extra shinigami killed L to save the girl she loves. If only that shinigami did not interfere in their rivalry, that was an easy win for L.

I'm used to the English dub because I was more familiar with L's voice actor, but it's more endearing to hear how in Japanese, L speaks fairly politely w/ his keigo.

I think L is based on someone with Asperger's. His intelligence and drive is off the charts, but his social skills are lacking and he doesn't care at all to fit in or be accepted. He's never even had anyone he considers a real friend, because when he looks at people his brain, like an overactive AI, is too busy working out and calculating all of their hidden flaws that would lead to betrayal and deceit. However, he doesn't let this get him down and embraces his unique mind to serve a higher purpose. L is an amazing role model for people whose brains work differently. I have ADHD, which is different than Asperger's but also socially debilitating for me and I've always felt like an outsider to society. Watching him taught me to love my weird brain, embrace its strengths and be more understanding of its flaws, and generally just be more confident and feel less like a freak.

He understands social situations enough we’re I would say he’s more negligent to it than lacking
He's the anti-social genius trope. I really don't think there's any need to read too deeply into the author's intentions, especially when their characters are archetypes
