  • A homeowner from North Canton, Ohio, called to ask if we had installed LeafFilter micro mesh gutter guards on her home in 2005.
We told her that we hadn't installed the gutter guards, but LeafFilter likely did. While looking up LeafFilter's phone number, she said that she wasn't happy with her current system and asked if we would visit her home to make some recommendations.
This video showcases the sad state of her gutters when we arrived. Covered in leaves and debris, some of which had hardened on the micro mesh gutter screen, it was a hot mess.
In order to truly fix the problem, we recommended also replacing her banged up, 5-inch gutters with new 6" gutters. Since the gutters were in bad shape, we recommended that it would be a better invest in new gutters rather than trying to overhaul the ones she had. The immediate benefit is that we could install them properly, they'd increase her water capacity by 40%, and it would improve the look of her home.
While LeafFilter was the right idea 18-years ago, MasterShield is an improved version of LeafFilter that will do a better job shedding leaves and debris and keeping her son and her off the ladder and roof.
Before: She had warped and poorly performing LeafFilter with grimy 5" gutters.
After: She had pretty, new 6" gutters and MasterShield gutter guards that will perform 100% better than before.

Here's what the homeowner said about her experience working with Gutter Guards Direct:
"The problem I had with my old gutters is when it rained I had a waterfalls running over & down my foundation. Years ago LeafFilter was installed but over time the back of my house became shady due to pine trees which caused thick moss & pine needles to take over the gutters. I called Johnathan at Gutter Guards Direct. Since they handle several different leaf guards he suggested MasterShield & to go from a 4” gutter to a 6”. Also the slant of the gutters was off causing the water to pool towards the middle of the house. I had the work done. The guys took their time & did a super job plus they were great to work with. Now I have gutters that work!"

Update: Nearly a year to the day after we installed the 6" gutters and MasterShield gutter guards, one of the towering pine trees at the rear of her property fell down and clipped the edge of her house and patio cover. As part of the claim, her insurance carrier paid for a new roof; removal and reinstallation of the gutter guards and the gutters that were damaged by the impact.
While never fun dealing with insurance claims, the homeowner now has a new roof, new gutters, and MasterShield gutter guards that will eliminate a seasonal chore for a lifetime!

Of course there are leaves. It’s not a magical solution. When you have so many trees, you have to maintain the roof and gutters. Even when you have gutter guards

Maybe you need to have a few trees cut. That will be a problem with any product. It obvious no one is doing any maintenance on the house.

Actually, this homeowner had a very well kept home and yard. As a tree lover, she opted to keep the tree in her back yard, which is why she installed gutter guards to begin with.
There were also several large white pine trees in a neighbor’s yard that were contributing to her gutter problems. While she had asked the neighbor to cut them down, they refused.
But with a relatively low slope roof and being 85-years old at the time we did the work, LeafFilter and the gutters were past their prime.
The reason she hired us was to clean everything up and provide a better long term solution that she could benefit from for the remainder of her time in the house.
Because MasterShield has a better forward slope than LeafFilter, she won’t be subject to leaves and debris accumulating on her new 6” gutters anymore.
