I have been looking for a duel disk for nearly a decade. I never knew what they were called and the store pulled them off the shelves relatively fast. Such an amazing video
unfortunately I couldn't afford them when they were stocked on shelves!!

I highly doubt this was sold in 1996. i remember these appearing in Toys"R"Us Stores around 2004, and I quickly got one for my birthday.
Sorry to say my friend but on the actual duel disk on the underside it even says (c) 1996 KAZUKI TAKAHASHI.
Western release may have been around 2004 but the Japanese get everything a lot earlier.
So originally I would say production started on 1996 maybe all the way upto 2004 but obviously they have stopped making them since then.
All YuGiOh merchandise says (c)1996 KAZUKI TAKAHASHI. Even my new cards have that labeled on them. My booster packs have that written on them as well. It just means that the brand was copyrighted in 1996. The Duel Disk (Version 2) didn't even exist in the original anime or manga until sometime after 1998 when the original duel disk (version 1) was shown.
What you have is a Mattel Duel Disk made in 2003, and discontinued in 2004.

Yugioh Duel Monsters came out in 2002 lol, definitely not around in 1996. 1996 was the original manga by Kazuki Takahashi, no sign of Duel Monsters back then.

That looks SOOOOO much better than the factory standard!! Though I would've painted the Monster Card Zone slots blue first, and then placed cardboard in them and painted the rest of the slot wing silver, before working on the red arrows on the card slots. Would've saved a lot of time, and a lot of tape. Other than that, very nicely done! 😆
In terms of paint order, I think doing a full silver base coat does make more sense.
1. It's the main overall "body" color of the piece, so full coverage with it gives the best look.
2. Full coverage also gives better strength when using metallic paint.
3.Cardboard masking can have problems (leaks, the cardboard getting adhered by the paint and damaging the coat when removed, etc.

The thing is that it costs a lot for the US since the new Duel Disc is a Japan Exclusive. Big Bad Toy Store has preorder for $339.99 and that doesn't include the taxes and shipping cost.... It's around $366.99...

I got two duel disk, this one and the the first Duel Academy one, been trying to save up and find a cheap (decent) Orichalcos (sp?) one since I love how that one looks. I used so double sided hook and loop fastener to replace the standard velcro they came with since my wrist and arm (being an adult) are quite a bit bigger than the target age range. This was a great paint job man, it really made the thing pop much better than the paint it comes with, it's shiny as all get out now.
ShinKyuubi I've got one of the orichalcos (i guess that's how you spell it) duel disks. paid 10 bucks for it at a yard sale about 6 years ago lol. never seen one prior to that.
+Tyler Baldwin You lucky son of a gun, the cheapest decent one I can find are on Ebay and they are still 70+ bucks, trying to buy one off Amazon in any kind of good condition is like 100+, brand new is 200+.

I just realized you painted over the area around the arrow of the Graveyard which was supposed to be white/silver.
I thought about doing this to make an all black duel disk from the YuGiOh R manga arc, it was a special one of a kind, that Joey temporarily owned, would make for a cool cosplay.
The only problem is that I don't like the all black so I'd leave a few silver accents. But that leaves me with whether i want a matte oxidized iron look or a metallic black car finish look.

Besides polishing, shouldn't you apply a gloss coat finish?
with the paint I used the gloss finish mattes out the metallic look, not sure why.. But I have tried it before :00

Hi, can you do a tutorial on the yugioh duel academy version of the duel disk? I recently got one from my friend and is a bit dusty and wanted to see what I can do to make it look new or even better than the original.
Could you do one for the yugioh gx duel disk? I tried doing it but the paint job i did for the monster zones and it was ruined by the spread of the paint

Man, I wish I kept mine. I was in the middle of moving and had to throw out things that wouldn't fit in boxes. Duel Disks need to make a come back
No clear coat? It would protect the paint and give a way better shiny look to it.

Does anyone know the orginal exact paint colors? Cause mine is in great condition and just need very little touch ups but I do not want to ruin it with a different color blue and silver...

this will come in handy when that one user finally irons out the AR hololens with this card game. Then get that duel disk and do this and we are finally in business.

you should have used frog tape/blue tape instead of regular tape. works best with painting things

I deffinitely need to try this, I've had mine sitting on a shelf for 10 years now, I never got the chance to use it, even once, never had anyone to play YuGiOh with... Plus, mine came with many factory mistakes, where the plastic didnt set correctly and created many swirly patterns that look awful, also the stickers rotted away...
Edit: BTW, whats the type of sander that you used?

why nof take it apart and paint the pieces individually? Seems like it would negate a good chunk of taping it up
I would still need to tape it up anyway even if I took it apart since most of the job is overlapping the same pieces

Would you make a functioning Arc-V duel disk? The blade would probably just be a plastic board with slots and LED lights tbh.
It would have been cool if they made duel discs that function the same way like in the show.
