It took me about 10 hours to 100% this game, but it was some of the most fun I’ve had on the Switch. I can’t recommend this game enough. 10 hours is the perfect time for me.
I was afraid that there is some aimless wondering in towns involved. It's just not my thing to talk to multiple town characters just to progress. Price, save system and no map are other reasons why I pass on this one.
I just happened to arrange a click and collect for a physical copy of this earlier so I could get it with some in-store credit. Despite the lack of an autosave (at least you can save at any point) or a map in most areas, I think I’ll be able to get some enjoyment out of this. The gameplay seems decent and the visuals look lovely. I feel like I haven’t made a bad choice. Thanks for the review.
Preordered it as a birthday present. This and Kaze will be a nice treat to play through my three-day weekend (Memorial Day, for those of you outside the U.S.).
I had noticed that you have to save in the pause menu. In MWIV you saved by talking to the NPC in the blue robe. When you talk to him for the first time in this game he even mentions that he is out of a job because of the save feature being in the pause menu. Maybe it would have helped if they kept the save feature through that NPC intact as well as in the pause menu that way you would want to talk to him when to see him in the dungeons.
Either buy the game or dont. The framerates snobbery has gotten out of control. We got ps5 and xbox x claiming 120 fps,but were not gunna see that. A game either looks n runs good and with the naked eye makes you want to purchase, or you don't.its hilarious cuz these snobs will argue about a trailer's fps and ppl are guessing,or saying its 60 when it's clearly 30 as and vice versa.ppl arguing about something they dont even know about and need it pointed out to them so when its 30,they can claim there not buying the game
@@NintenDub It's not snobbery or anything like that - the framerate is an important enough characteristic that some outlets (e.g. Digital Foundry, but also SwitchUp themselves on occasion) devote time to testing and reporting. I agree that some people aren't that concerned (good on them) and I also agree that 120+ FPS is only really important for the hardcore e-sports players, but the difference between 30 and 60 FPS is literally night-and-day in some cases. While I can usually tell the difference with the "naked eye", RUclips videos aren't always accurate representations and I've been wrong before (e.g. Torchlight 2 on Switch ran much better than its video reviews suggested). Finally, in the case of multi-platform games, knowing which version has the best framerate can often lead to purchasing decisions on one platform or another.
nice review, looking forward to trying it when I get my physical version from strictly limited! the original game being on the cartridge really did sell it to me, love those old school graphics! but I have come around to the new visuals as well, watching videos like this
Sat down, buckled in , waiting for this review, first of many physical pre orders over the next month. Hope its a good one..popcorn ready for the review, let's goooooo!
@@SwitchUpYt cheers mate, im glad I got this on physical. Also quick one for you. Legend of mana apparantly not getting physical uk release, but the asia version has English sub text so playasia uk is the way for that one.
I pre-ordered a physical copy on Strictly Limited Games' site back in January! Unfortunately it was a little more expensive than the Canadian retail price (which didn't exist at the time when I pre-ordered it, so I didn't know it was more expensive until a few months later), but at least it still comes with the bonus game, as well as a limited edition reversible box cover that's exclusively made/sold by Strictly Limited Games! I wouldn't call it the best value, but hopefully it'll be worth it when it arrives.
I preordered this while drunk over the weekend. Best time to make impulse buys imo. I'm gonna wait until I've played a few hours then I'll come back and watch this review. In the meantime, I have Ori that I just picked up on sale and Shantae 1/2 Genie to keep me amused until Friday. Enjoying them both so far
I wasn’t drunk but I have no regrets getting the collectors editions of Hollow Knight, Hyper Light Drifter and ScourgeBringer which is on the way. Got HLD and HK today, feel like a kid in a candy store XD
Ori is probably going to be better than half geni. Both priate curse and seven sirens are metroidvania like ori though, so the quality is closer to ori. Half geni is very nonetheless, i enjoyed it, i even had the ultimate edition.
@@ct2651 I got Seven Sirens on physical last week but haven't played it yet. Didn't know it was a metroidvania so I'm looking forward to that now. Thanks for letting me know. You're right about Ori, I'm definitely enjoying it the most. 1/2 Genie's good too but Ori is pretty special.
Nice review, thanks. Lovely looking game, actually think the black outline of the character works quite well. Will probably pick this up in a sale (if there ever is one). Or maybe pick it up physically.
Anybody know if the Japanese version also gives you the Genesis game? If I can't find the American one I'm likely importing the Japanese version of the game. I feel like it would be the same but I wanted a clear cut answer on that.
Still waiting on my copy from Strictly Limited games. I ordered it alongside Clockwork Aquario. At first they were both releasing at the same time, which is right around now, but then Clockwork Aquario got pushed back to Q3/4...
Excellent review, will definitely pick up the physical version. Perhaps we will get to see the rest of the old Monster World games remade as well! Cheers.
Come on Mark or glen, you're experienced enough gamers by now to know to always save the game lol! Also you're both southern so sound the same 😜 looks good but 30 quid is far too much for me but that physical looks worth it
I'm glad they polished up this remake tho it doesn't replace the original, the 3D graphics still shine through with it's charm. I've got it pre-ordered right now, plus I can play the original game at anytime I want.
Well ya Sega Mega Drive/Genesis fans are in luck if ya think this remake doesn't have the original sound mode. At the title screen, press Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Left, Right, Right. This will unlock the soundtrack from the original Monster World IV, which you can toggle in the settings menu. Is a bonus indeed & thank gaming gods they didn't left out the original soundtrack.
See this is the kind of game I got the Switch for. Kept my PS4 for the other games like God of War and Horizon Dawn and The Last of Us ect... And Switch for everything like this and Pokemon, Zelda, Mario and so on. It works out perfectly. Plus PS4 games are cheaper. They don't sell for almost msrp up to 5 years later!
Having the original game IN CARTRIDGE did it for me. Pre-ordered pho sho, we need more of this, and not that "buy physical game, download most of it" bullshit trend nowadays. It's understandable when game is huge (looking at you, DOOM Eternal), but not so much in most cases. Way to go, Inin Games!
If you liked Monster Boy, check out the Shantae series if you haven't already. You can usually get 1/2 Genie Hero on sale which is a good place to start imo. The Wonder Boy remake on Switch seems decent too though I haven't played a ton yet. That one was recently on sale for very cheap.
Never played the original a lot but I enjoyed it. Sure, there are a lot of very questionable gameplay choices (like how they decided to increase challenge by taking away pepelagu or making his moves worse and regressing your moveset towards the second half of the game rather than just making the puzzles more complex) and it’s graphics are mobile game level. But it’s visuals are still nice and eye popping, Asha herself is adorable and her chest opening animation never gets old and there’s still a lot of simple fun to be had. Nice turn your brain off game
I loved Monster Boy, but I may pass on this one. I hope we get a new game after, either a new Wonder Boy, or Monster Boy. Might still grab this to show support.
I ordered a collector’s edition from Strictly Limited Games over a year and a half ago and I still have not gotten it!! When I ask about it all I get is a message saying it’s still in production and that’s it it’s been A YEAR and A Half now and still no game!
I'll pick it up to support the series. But personally I think the Sega Genesis original looks better than this visually. (Though heads up if you want to play the original, you'll need a Genesis emulator and the fully translated rom)
I can say the price is too much on eShop. People would buy the Wonder Boy Collection since that has Asha in Monster World. There is going to be another collection also by Bliss Brain coming out.
This is one of my favorite games of all time, and I just found out about this remake today! I’m surprised, but also very glad that this game is getting the recognition it deserves. :)
So it's a council estate version of Shantae at a premium AAA game title price? This is one of those games that will sit on my wish list and will still be there when my 2 year old is at Uni....
The original (this is a remake) came out long before Shantae. I'd recommend using a Sega Genesis emulator and the fully English translated rom to play. The visuals are better in my opinion too
If you want to see if it's something you'd enjoy I'd try it out via Sega Genesis emulator and English translated Rom. Since the original was never localized.
The no autosave thing just bit me. I wish I had known that ahead of time. Died and lost a good 45 minutes of gameplay. Not the best first impression for a game.
