Well, I'd already left a recommendation for you to do the Project Zero/Fatal Frame series back on your last RE Clone video, but I suppose I can repeat myself: Yes, please do a series on the Project Zero/Fatal Frame games! The first three make an awesome little trilogy, and it'll be interesting to see if you can get a hold of the 4th one as it never released outside of Japan. And as for the 5th game on the Wii-U...good luck getting it for less then $200 these days!
I generally know about most of these RE clones, but never heard of Curse: The Eye of Isis, and glad to see it's on Xbox. That Pentium III powered console has a larger horror library than I realized.
So what defines a "Resident Evil clone"? A horror game focusing on survival and puzzle solving? Because if that's true, that would make Resident Evil a clone of D, or Alone in the Dark, or Sweet Home. Hell, the puzzle elements seem to have come from old adventure games, point and click types like Monkey Island. It feels insulting to reduce legendary titles like Eternal Darkness and especially the genuinely artistic Silent Hill trilogy, to a mere "clone" of something that wasn't exactly original in the first place.
I'm really glad you gave Rule of Rose a chance! It is my favorite game ever. You have clearly not yet played The Mermaid Princess chapter hehe. I hope you find time to finish it sometime, that game is a work of art from start to finish.

Jared from Avalanche reviews: This game drove me into a frenzy: turns out it was an old Nazi torture device used to psychologically impair and hypnotise it's victims and I slaughtered the postman and blew up my house. Also Jared from Avalanche reviews: That said, I seriously recommend you guys give this one a try-
Odd of you to warn us about games that have risen to the $70 range, but no mention at all about Rule of Rose's $600 price, I mean it's a good game but not $600 good, but Curse the Eye of Isis is $70 good.
Thank you so much for Koudelka. I too sound like a broken record when praising the game - but the maturity of the characters is so refreshing to see. The dialogue is lovely and feels more like a play rather than a movie. I would love to see a remake, keeping the movement aspect of the battle system but mixed with the Shadow Hearts judgement ring. Of course - keeping the acting is a must.
I have to admit, I do kind of like Silent Hill: Origins. My only real complaint about the game has always been the weapon durability. As for Curse: Eyes of Isis, the gme is kind of clunky but rather interesting.
You hit that Tumblr analogy right on the head, and it's part of the reason that I scarcely use the site today. Seeing people who haven't dove into a series take it, come up with their own narratives and essentially bastardize it just pisses me off way too much. Call it 'gatekeeping' if you will, but damn is it infuriating.
Not gonna lie, never heard about Koudelka until couple weeks ago when you talked about that game on your stream. It is curious to me as Koudelka is a czech surname and make me wonder how the hell it came to be, especially since it is a Japanese game.
Lost a lot of respect for you as you stated SH3 is the greatest horror game of all time or the best of all SH. It was a really good game, but is more of an action adventure than a horror game. Fun in its own right but is not a fine aged oil painting like SH 2 where cut scenes were actually hand crafted like old frame by frame animations.
I'm going to be honest with you, this comment broke me. Either there's some kind of fundamental misunderstanding going on here, or someone has given you a wildly inaccurate description of what constitutes a horror game.
@@AvalancheReviews I guess not what constitutes a horror game, more what constitutes a Silent Hill game. I don't have much time to reply, as this can go as far as a short essay, but the twinkle that made SH1 and especially SH2 faded to stone wash in SH3 for multiple reasons. The biggest things I see in terms of detachment is the fact that the combat is a bit too heavy in terms of gameplay. Enemies are everywhere and in not so particular order. The humor and over confidence in the protagonist is a bit too much as well as some 4th wall breaking moments. The game is super fun in its own light, but as a story woven with gameplay, SH 3 is not as dark, depressing and oppressive as the 2 prior, leading to a SH game that kind of doesn't take it self as seriously. I don't feel like there should be room for a protagonist to throw one liners like Dante would in this universe. The fears detached from sh3 and replaced with 'let's kick some ass and chew spear mint' . SH 2 is the pinnacle of the series. The rest kind of tries to be what it was but will never be. IMO SH4 shares more of that twinkle SH2 had than SH3 even with the bad voice acting. SH4 makes you feel helpless, a prisoner, a murderer, a victim of intense acts against humanity, mixed in with the paranormal, and hand walking baby faces, you've got yourself a game very reminiscent of the sadness felt in SH 2. You didn't lose a subscriber. You didn't lose a viewer. I just felt that you should see this as an avid representative of retro horror games. Sh 3 is a fun time. But it's not that well aged oil panting that draws tears without really knowing why. Sh3 is an epic. Not a story of mental struggle, not a story of loss. Sh3 is a redemption story, and that's why I ultimately feel like it can't be compared to the 2 previous titles (Even though she did lose her father, that is not the sense of loss I felt as a gamer. After that, it was time to kick ass.)
Ok, but Konami quite literally created the series specifically to clone RE. The guidelines they gave team silent made sure that they copied RE's gameplay.
@@AvalancheReviews is that evidenced anywhere? I heard that Konami wanted to replicate the financial success of RE, but I think the two franchises differ enough to say SH is hardly a clone. That’s like saying RE7 copied the PT demo.
What about Nuclear Dawn on the PS1? I mean, it is technically not a horror game, but the game mechanics are pretty much directly cloned from the RE games.
My childhood was defined by Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame. Would love to see a full retrospective, or at least more in-depth, breakdown of Fatal Frame from you!

It's a shame that Rule of Rose was banned due to accusations made by people who clearly never played the game and came out so late in the PS2's lifespan. It really is an underrated masterpiece.
@@KnightBX I understand, but I do kind of wonder if the gameplay flaws were on purpose or not. Jennifer obviously isn't an action hero, she doesn't even have basic training like most RE protagonists. Although yeah, aspects of the game play did feel kind of dated, but I think the story and atmosphere makes the game worth it.
Parasite Eve for a remake and Fatal Frame for new instalments. Silent Hill 3, never really got it. I loved the first 2 but 3? Whilst it had some great sections (the amusement park was terrific) i found it very frustrating. I wanted to spend time exploring hill and the giant 1st chunk of the game which wasn't even in hill is something I would happily skip. Finaly I hated the way Harry was treated. Rule of rose was banned in the uk, so the copy's that did surface were expensive at the time and about the price of a new console now. Koudelka was one of my favourites. It was one of the best looking games on ps1 and had a huge amount of Final Fantasy like cut scenes. Its a shame its sequels went off the rails so much becoming just more weird jrpg's.
That hate for Silent Hill 2 and its fans seems like something personal. Like a Legend of Korra fan bashing Avatar: The Last Airbender only because they got salty over being told that its new lore shames its origins. I've seen some SH3 fans doing that with full frothing when told that SH3 is second after SH2. Doesn't look well together with using Code Veronica as a positive example.
I think Silent Hill 2 is the best game in the series because it dumped the cult storyline and focused on the purgatory aspect of Silent Hill rather than the ooga booga spooky little girl with special powers. I thought Silent Hill 3 was unnecessary (I still loved it better than 4 and the following games after and include it in my top 10 horror games). Rule of Rose and Haunting Ground are Clocktower Clones (A series that predates Resident Evil).
I'm confused. You consider Onimusha a Resi clone, yet you don't consider the original Devil May Cry a resi clone? It was literally Resident Evil 4 at one point dude. It has a fixed camera, logic puzzles and resource management (to an extent). I'd absolutely consider it a resi clone.
We're covering games that ape the original RE style. That means survival horror themed games. I wouldn't really consider DMC or RE4 as being particularly survival horror feeling. I mean the only real similarity is a few fixed angles in DMC. Other than that, it plays nothing like any RE game.
This series (RE clones) has such great re-watch value! A new game every ten minutes. It's such fun to hear Jared's take on a conveyor belt of Resi clones. A winner is you!
If you're gonna do a retrospective for Fatal Frame, you might wanna look at the videos from NitroRad and RagnarRox; these guys go really in depth to give you appreciation for the games.
fatal frame is scariest one for me. i was afraid to walk into the next room because the ghost and the entire place is creepy. you never know when the next jump scare take place? though they may be harmless but they do trigger a huge heart beat :D powering up before taking a picture of the ghost is like facing your own fear head on in a shodown. sometimes they dash toward you and you missed that shot then try and try again until you get over their deform face.
"And what list of Resident Evil clones could possibly be complete without mentioning THE series that did it better than anyone else." Including Resident Evil.

I'd really like to. It was intriguing.
Yes! Just woke up and I was really looking forward for part 2. Thank you sir
Where is the retrospective of Resident Evil: Retribution?
Bad English?
Jared, the thing that drove me into watching your videos it's the voice and the nice script.
I'm not a native english speaker, but I enjoy a lot of content that way.
Man, binging your vids helped me through finals! :(
I'm Surprised that Dino Crisis wasn't mentioned.
I’ve spent so many hours watching your videos that I forget you’re not a huge RUclips. The quality you put out is top tier and feels like I should be paying for it. Thanks for the content
Thank you! I'll get there one day. For now, I love what I do and comments like this keep me moving forward. Just a matter of time.
Generational discounting : is why many younger gamers don't understand why many of their games are seen as shitty, cynical blood-sucking dressed in cool clothing 🙍 you ignore your history, you end up not knowing the world you're living in.
Finally! Someone who recognize the greatness of Koudelka. I remember that friend of mine in middle school let me borrow this game he have finished it and both of us love it. Specially because by that time I have already become a fan RPG and survival horror games.
Love the merch man looks awesome so glad its paying off for you man awesome video was hyped for part 2 i also agree with you on heather mason shes so relatable we have all been a sassy teen right i kinda am in spirit too still 🤣🤓🇬🇧✌🏻
Project Zero got some insane level sound design, all of them
It had me at creepy children singing nursery rhymes.
So I would love to see you do a Fatal Frame retrospective especially on Fatal Frame 1 2 and 3 I actually managed to find them on Amazon for 40 bucks a piece which is around the same price when I bought them many years ago when GameStop still sold PlayStation 2 and original Xbox games and GameCube back in the day and it's crazy that their price is not that expensive
Jared from Avalanche reviews: This game drove me into a frenzy: turns out it was an old Nazi torture device used to psychologically impair and hypnotise it's victims and I slaughtered the postman and blew up my house.
Also Jared from Avalanche reviews: That said, I seriously recommend you guys give this one a try-
You should review sweet home, it would be really cool if you reviewed the game that turned into resident evil
Maybe give Evil Dead: Hail to the King a look. lol
Odd of you to warn us about games that have risen to the $70 range, but no mention at all about Rule of Rose's $600 price, I mean it's a good game but not $600 good, but Curse the Eye of Isis is $70 good.
(game has a fixed camera) "It's just like resident evil!"
(game doesn't have tank controls) "it can't be a survival horror."
@@MisterMelvinheimer truuuu
Are you going to talk about Gregory Horror Show for the PS2? That would be neat.
Damn there are so many RE clones out there it's like a zombie outbreak.
I'm curious, have you ever weighed in on the old (PC) Alone In The Dark games?
Not yet, but I'm going to have to eventually.
@@AvalancheReviews Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is easily my favorite RE1 'clone'. Good video! Got quite a few of these on my backlog...
Koudelko’s animations are so smooth it’s uncanny
I have to admit, I do kind of like Silent Hill: Origins. My only real complaint about the game has always been the weapon durability. As for Curse: Eyes of Isis, the gme is kind of clunky but rather interesting.
You hit that Tumblr analogy right on the head, and it's part of the reason that I scarcely use the site today. Seeing people who haven't dove into a series take it, come up with their own narratives and essentially bastardize it just pisses me off way too much. Call it 'gatekeeping' if you will, but damn is it infuriating.
Project Zero 1 and Silent Hill 2 _are_ the greatest horror games ever made.
I would like a Project Zero retrospective after the RE clones.
I think a lot of people would. I get requests all the time, and I'm 100% down for it.
Not gonna lie, never heard about Koudelka until couple weeks ago when you talked about that game on your stream. It is curious to me as Koudelka is a czech surname and make me wonder how the hell it came to be, especially since it is a Japanese game.
Really hope you get to Dino Crisis 2, easily, hands down, my favourite RE clone of all time!! So much fun! Despite still being scary as all heck haha
You can’t call Silent Hill a clone. I’m a fan of both RE and SH but what Silent Hill can deliver and make you feel cannot be done even by RE.
@@Arch_ but the engine pt uses looks similar to the re7 engine tho
I love Koudelka!! Very early on my life it thought me the fundamentals of tank-healer-dps as well as the concept of min/maxing
I'm a simple guy. I see an avalanche vid, I click like.
Parasite eve 2 is also a big time resident evil clone. Much more so than the first one
Yet another amazing in depth Documentary.
Can always rely on this channel for a deep analytical dive into video game backgrounds.
Keep up the great work dood👌
(Ps: Have literally played every silent hill But SH3😭)
what? was no expecting a game i beat and enjoyed , totally forgot about it.
I’m shocked this channel hasn’t blown up yet. Your videos are so well done and they’re always a pleasure to watch. All this hard work is going to continue to pay off, my guy.
Much appreciated. Let's both hope you're right!
Hummm, what about Countdown: Vampires ??? I was expecting it to show up, but, seems it was forgotten.
It's a shame that Rule of Rose was banned due to accusations made by people who clearly never played the game and came out so late in the PS2's lifespan. It really is an underrated masterpiece.
Eh, the story is pretty interesting and the concept is pretty good. But the game itself is not fun to play.
This was great, thanks man! Definitely would be into a series on Fatal Frame if you’ve got the guts!
I love this multi game per video format. It gives me a chance to play a lot of stuff I might not have otherwise. Good to see people like it so much.
If you're gonna do a retrospective for Fatal Frame, you might wanna look at the videos from NitroRad and RagnarRox; these guys go really in depth to give you appreciation for the games.
Awesome video dude! I really feel like I wanna play some of these now! Just put on my ps2 and sit back and relax with how much I enjoy these games!
fatal frame is scariest one for me. i was afraid to walk into the next room because the ghost and the entire place is creepy. you never know when the next jump scare take place? though they may be harmless but they do trigger a huge heart beat :D
powering up before taking a picture of the ghost is like facing your own fear head on in a shodown. sometimes they dash toward you and you missed that shot then try and try again until you get over their deform face.
I’m not like other Silent Hill fans, I actually like Downpour 😌
(This is a half joke, I do like Downpour but I don’t think I deserve a cookie for it)
There’s this other Indie series “Outbreak” it looks pretty similar to the original Resident Evil games.
which in itself is spinning iteself from the RE Outbreak games
"And what list of Resident Evil clones could possibly be complete without mentioning THE series that did it better than anyone else."
Including Resident Evil.
