  • Nhl news today - The edmonton oilers st louis blues offer sheet week has come to an end, with the decision on dylan holloway and philip broberg becoming official this morning. Pretty big edmonton oilers news and st louis blues news for that matter. It was an interesting situation with doug armstrong stan bowman and their respective front offices, but now we can begin to see how edmonton oilers trades and signings move them forward from this, and how broberg and holloway integrate themselves into the blues young core. Oilers fan here. With the transactions we made before and after this news. We got picks, we got cap room, we got replacements, we got guys that can step up, we got some decent prospects back in Savoie, Podkolzin and Emberson. It sucks to lose the guys we did and that’s putting some hope in some guys we got.
I’m not too worried about it. Majority of the team is still back

I agree - it's not terrible and you got some decent young players back. However those young guys are not proven, and you're not just trying to make the playoffs here. You're in a Stanley Cup window - the expectation is to make the Stanley Cup Final again at the very least. After Bouchard, Kulak and Ekholm (no, Nurse doesn't count) the D is very thin. Is it the worst? No. Is it better than 15 or 20 other teams in the NHL? Possibly. Is it a top 10 D corps in the NHL? Maybe last year, not anymore. Are you really able to look someone in the eye and say with 100% certainty "This is as good or better defence corps than we had last year, and it is good enough to make the Stanley Cup Final again, but this time win the Stanley Cup."?

So glad the Oilers let them walk. What kind of message would it send to all those guys who signed for less than they could get elsewhere (Janmark, Skinner, etc.) if two kids came along and got huge paydays? This move tells the team, "Go ahead and chase the bag somewhere else, guys sign here to win, not to make extra cash."

Being either of Holloway or Broberg it's hard to say no to 2/3x the money you were looking to get in Oilers without these offer sheets. They got to think about their potential earnings over their short careers first. I'm pretty sure that if it was closer in terms of money both would probably rather stay in Edmonton.

Never blame players for taking money. However I happy they passed that 4 million for Broberg was way too much (which is why the Blues did it) for the player TODAY but he absolutely could be worth it by the end of the contract.
Oilers got cap compliant, a bunch of picks and a couple of cheap players to slot in for now not locked to cannot be traded for a year. It is a lot healthier than taking both players and absolutely having Kane away all season on LTIR because you cannot afford him. If he does not come back you have the money at the deadline to go after a big fish D man and the assets to make the trade. Which is not ideal but a much better situation.

All of us Oilers fans will be sad to see both Holloway and Broberg go, popular players in our fanbase and they were starting to look promising. But I think the front office have done the right thing here. We are not a team that can afford to have young, developing players on large contracts, no matter how talented they may be. We are in win now mode, the only way you're getting a contract that big in Edmonton right now is if you are an immediate impact player who can be relied upon in (hopefully) another cup run. We have to look at the bigger picture, right now the priority is getting Drai signed up and then McDavid and Bouch next year. In a nutshell, this is the best case outcome to a less than ideal situation.

As a Blues fan, I'm very happy with Armstorng's move here. The blue line needs some young blood. There are too many older, undersized d-men & too many no trade clauses. There aren't many defensemen prospects ready for NHL full-time roles. Kessel made great strides last season & I look forward to seeing how he progresses this season along with Tucker. However, they don't have as high a ceiling as Broberg. The Blues 1st round pick from this year, Jiricek, could become a very solid top 4 but he's not going to be ready for a few years. Yes, there is a bit of an overpay with the $4.5 million a year but it's only 2 years & the team has the cap. It's a much better use than bringing in some over 30 year old mid-tier veteran to eat minutes. Holloway is also a good pickup. St Louis has several promising forward prospects who will be cracking the lineup over the next few seasons so it's going to be fun seeing who Holloway fits in with. Having him on a line with Bolduc could be interesting. Holloway's speed with Bolduc's physicality might frustraate some defenders. All in all, it was great to see the Blues add some young, promising players who appear to be NHL ready. They've needed an acquisition like this for the past few seasons so brining in two 23 year-olds only having to give up a 2nd round pick, two 3rd rounds in different years, & a defenseman prospect Blues drafted in the 3rd round seems like a bargain. Now I just have my fingers crossed hoping both Holloway & Broberg meet expectations.

They can use that $ wisely now and pickup another Right shot D.

Its tough loss for the Oilers and we'll miss their speed, their heart, and their timely scoring.
Honestly though. They're not Bouchard. They're not Draisaitl. It wont be fun to replace good guys and contributors on the team but right now thats not a problem Edmonton has. Skinner came here. Arvidsson came here. Henrique stayed. The buzz in the NHL must be that the Oilers are in the mix and cup chasers can roll the dice.
We'll have some moves to make because everyone looks like a fit on paper and defencemen are precious commodities but its not a gut punch and its not a bleeding wound. Edmonton will manage.
Id say the Blues make the playoffs now but who are they gonna kick out of the wild card? LA? Maybe. Nashville? Never.

But I’m also kinda happy they didn’t match Broberg who clearly didn’t want to be an Oiler after requesting a trade and reportedly refusing to re-sign. I’m really gonna miss Holloway but we’re in win now mode and can’t afford to overpay young guys. If you want to be part of a winning team you have to take a pay cut, it’s just the way it is. Oilers could of traded Nurse for literally anything and put Kane on IR to clear up more than enough cap to keep these 2 plus so much more or use one of them as trade bait to get an already established D-man like Chychrun. Also fail for St.Louis, it might seem like a win but all Holloway and Broberg have right now is 'potential' both are still developing slowly and most likely wont have any real impact by the time their contracts are up again anyways.

They went from a CONTENDER IN THE OILERS TO A rebuilding team still in ST. Louis. DYLAN HOLLOWAY MADE A HUGE MISTAKE IN ACCEPTING THE BLUES OFFER. Don’t make the BLUES OUT TO BE SAVY FOR THEIR MOVES AND OFFER SHEETS. These players have a lot to learn and prove plus there is no McDAVID AND DRAISATIAL on the BLUES to help them achieve success.,both BROBERG who evidently had an attitude towards the Oilers organization and HOLLOWAY who I will miss were selfish and that is not a team player. The Blues aren't that far away. If just one of Dvorsky or Snuggerud are as good as advertised I would say the Blues will be scary up front very soon. By next year:
      Buchnevich Thomas Kyrou
      Neighbors Dvorsky Snuggerud
      Holloway Schenn Bolduc
With plenty of cap space to spare. Those 9 right there only cost about 38 million, with only one bad contract. Six of them were drafted by the Blues. Only Buch is over 30. Those are all facts, capped by one hot take: Thomas only needs the national spot light for people to realize he is a borderline top 10 center in the league.
The Blues rarely have the superstars. When we won the cup we did it with 4 solid lines that could score--Barbashev was on our 4th line, which is absurd in hindsight. Our most expensive line was $17 million: Tarasenko, Schwartz and Schenn.
I like what the Blues are building. Even if Broberg is as good as projected, the D still needs work. However, knowing that LTIR has spared us a difficult Krug contract and money to spend, we have time to shop for a top 4D at a good price.

The Canadian federal amount is lower on contract money classed as "bonus", at 15% instead of 33%, but the Canadian revenue agency is currently in a lawsuit to get the bonus reduction removed for hockey.
So, depending on contract structure and what the CRA lawsuit determines, taxes could be lower here, but will likely be lower there.
