Today we're taking a look at YogVentures. One of the most disastrous Kickstarter flops / dramas of all time. Those who grew up watching Lewis, Simon and the rest of the Yogscast fellas may remember this one. LMAO so true
Man, I never realised back in the day how quickly they went from the israphel thing to making their own game. 15 months! I thought it was years!
re: the minecon drama. you missed out that Mojang sold the rights to the yogscast panel to IGN (iirc). They weren't upset that werent paid to show up, they were expecting that, they were upset that they werent being paid to show up and that the panel they were putting on free of charge had been sold without their prior knowledge and that they would not be earning a penny from that sale. That was the reason they were pissed at Mojang.
Which seems pretty unfair to them
This whole video is very poorly researched. Notch literally apologized for the things he said about them because they weren't true.
The worst mistake you could is check on a youtuber you enjoyed ~10 years ago lol
So many channels are just nuked to the ground and im too afraid to dig into why
@@SozIDontTHaveANamea lot of things with the yogscast.
Including a case (or 2 I think?) of some illegal activities between one or 2 of the members and being sexual with some minors.

@@junatah5903 why in gods name is it always the minors? How comes they always go straight for the underaged?! It is so unreal how many of them do this? Are they imitating the Hollywood elite?
The Yogscast is a strange tale with lots of ups and downs, but considering how long they've been about it's surprising how successful they are at what they do.
Yogscast definitely isnt what they used to be, but its still admirable to reminisce and watch their jingle jam charity streams, It seems to be something that brings back many old fans every year to raise millions for charity and have a good time, thanks for this awesome video slippin.
They still make good content but it's not like the old days. I'd say it all changed when Simon was hospitalised for a few years after that the yogs have changed, while Simon has returned he's not as prevalent as he used to be and more videos and streams are Lewis with others. Still all good content but they are a different group than they used to be.
The triforce podcast with Sips, Lewis, & Pyrion is still very good. Sips himself is also still making great gaming content on Twitch which gets reposted on YT.
I miss the Trucking Tuesday stuff, those one off videos of super jank games were comedy gold
Not defending the game but people shouldn't treat kickstarter like any other store.
People love to conveniently forget that kickstarter isn't buying a project, you are helping to ATTEMPT a project get made. And the 100s of warnings kickstarter and the page give you before you give a single penny about how there's no guarantee it succeeds 😅
A lot of Kickstarters were mishandled after an avalanche of money, or straight up just scams
In hindsight, it just makes everyone who was involved look like fools
I've backed a few failed projects in my time
What is it Yahtzee said? "You don't keep a life raft afloat by throwing huge sacks of heavy coins at it."
Of course there is expectation of results, but people who have any idea about budgetting will have plans for the funds, and some are straight out scams. Much like gambling, only put in what you can stomach losing.
Their game looks like it'd have come out on the N64. Before he brought up looking like a fake ad game I was thinking "This looks like if Minecraft and Donkey Kong 64 had an unholy child"

@@kamj6607Yeah exactly
if there is one things from this, is that they did also learn from their mistakes. Now that they also have their own video game publishing company that published a handful of some pretty fun games.
It’s been interesting following the yogs for so many years now.
Ventures was such a huge mess. I think it hurt a bunch of people and I think part of why it happened may have been because the Yogs was such a young group led by folks who didn’t have much experience with anything remotely similar.
The group has faced more issues but I think like the members, it’s grown up a lot since then and that growth is seen in how newer issues are handled.
I'm just saddened that the content isn't the same anymore, but I'm glad they're still around and frankly there's no way the old content would have lasted in this new day and age.

Nah its' entirely on the development studies fault. Not a fan of yogscast anymore but they're only content creators. They are basically just the mascots for the game. Winterkewl were the ones to approach the yogcast and committed to being able to make the game. They set the financial goal of the kickstarter which was reached. Meaning they theoretically had all the funds they needed. So this expectation of preorder money coming in is just blatantly false. Even so, if they had an actual game to show they could've gotten preorders. That lack of additional cashflow is entirely on them. Also, immediately losing $35,000 within two weeks of the beginning of development is crazy. Even spending that much on an artist upfront is crazy. Also, if that artist basically stole $35k then post their name so other studios know to avoid them. Why help hide their identity if there's nothing legally requiring you to do so? Smells extremely fishy to me.
I can't even hold it against that artist. POV: Your boss just gave you 35k with literally no strings attached. Lucasarts is somehow hiring you, meaning you'll get to work at a real company instead of the clown factory you're currently at, and not have this dumpster fire on your resume. You'd be insane not to take the money and run.
Always makes me sad seeing videos about yhe Yogscast, they were my childhood. It's like looking at old photos, my best mate and I became so close cause we always spoke about Yogscast videos and played Minecraft together. Good times
Pivoting your channel towards doing these sort of niche documentary style videos was brilliant, I've been loving these coverages of real-life stories that I knew nothing about over the last few months. Wish you the best ^.^
With the Notch Minecon thing it seems unfair to not mention the various people standing up for them such as TotalBiscuit. And we know what Notch turned out to be like. To me frankly looking back it was a good sign they did not get along.
Notch was always kind of a weird asshole (transphobia aside)
like in the IRC chats for the OG releases of Minecraft before it even had basic concepts like music he was offputting.
God forbid you expect people not to use expletives at an event for children.
@@azrielsatan8693 It was not an event for children. Minecraft was not marketed for children at the time and while the audience certainly had children in it it was hardly limited to it.
Again a bunch of other people there defended the Yogs saying they did not inappropiate. It was just Notch. The guy that turned out to be a literal white supremacist and generally unpleasent person.
@@XMysticHerox Notch is based.
@XMysticHerox ah yes, yt supremacy is when you say racism against white people is still racism. God forbid we don't have double standards and be not decent people.
I watched them so hardcore, even as a young adult! I loved Israphel so much ngl. I think I fell off a while after Sjin's farm, and, woof, that whole mess. Honestly there was a time, that even as a fan, I wrote Yogventures off as your a-typical Kickstarter garbage that wouldn't materialize. Their version of Whats Going On still goes hard though, even to this day.
As soon as I laid eyes on it I knew it was a flop. Any game similar to Minecraft is doomed to fail sadly
Saying this as a fellow diehard fan from the survival island series myself, loved these guys and I still watch Tom and Duncan from time to time.
@@pixellordm8780 Yeah, for real. It's hard to upstage a titan like Minecraft. Same with stuff like Terraria or even Stardew.
You can only imitate, and given that period in time, part of me wishes they'd done an adventure game more than anything.
Shadow of israphel is what got me into minecraft
I really like your new direction. The deadpan was always great, but now you're incredibly unique.
I stopped watching Yogscast when they ended Shadow of Israpheal, That honestly was, and still is, one of the most unique Minecraft series ever. The grand epic adventure and the feeling that they were just some guys that got caught up in it was honestly a lightning in the bottle kind of moment.
They did things like it for almost another decade. Just saying

To be fair, it's pretty shitty of the convention to not pay people to come and be on panels and whatnot. That game is, and always has been a money printer; not like they can't afford it. That's just gross.
I mean, 2011 was the literal second year of minecon with the first being just notch meeting a bunch of fans, not intdended to be some money printer
I was one of the people that donated to the kickstarter for YogVentures, and I also played the beta version. I really tried to like what they were doing, but it was just not enough. They did later on provide steam keys for TUG, but it was also in essentially an early beta state and didn’t ever make it to completion.
I eventually outgrew the Yogscast, and the failure of the project wasn’t something that really helped. At least I didn’t drop a ton of money on it, and I learned a very valuable lesson about not buying into an idea based on hype alone, and I learned it young enough for it to be a relatively inexpensive lesson
never ask the yogscast:
>what they did at minecon 2011
>where the yogventures money went
>what turps and sjin text about with their fans
"what they did at minecon 2011"
You mean when now disgraced Notch vaguely accused them of being unprofessional and a bunch of peiple including TotalBiscuit stood up for them?

Hey buddy, you sound too young to understand this so I'll go easy on you. But yes, it was forced. Every raid sponsor is forced. No one actually likes raid. But ad revenue isn't enough money to live on so it's an unspoken rule for viewers to tolerate sponsors like this so they can still make a living wage. NOTCH IS NOT A RELIABLE NARRATOR

I really dig the new content you’re putting out. I’m sure people miss the Kenshi videos and to some degree I do as well. I get the feeling you are more invested in this video format and I’m excited to watch you continue to put out informative dives into internet culture! Cheers!
Hey thumb man, i like these kind of videos but feel like the game videos with your editing style were my favorite content youve put out and some of the best on the plataform
Ayy thank you mate! Honestly to me I feel like I’ve achieved what I wanted to creatively with my old vids and if I kept forcing myself to make them I’d run into an issue of the vids feeling repetitive and tired. Also the main issue was how time consuming they were to create. Video games don’t always cooperate with a narrative you want to set out, so it could end up taking a couple weeks just to get footage, then a few more weeks to edit them to a standard I was happy with. It honestly got to a point where I could rarely even see friends or my gf at the time.
Shifting to this new style has been such a mental health boost, it feels way easier to create content I feel proud of. Plus I have way more control over how long a vid takes to release. That being said I want to constantly increase the quality of vids with my new style and keep creating stuff people will love :)
Yeah yogventures was a flop.. but they are still a publishing company and have a bunch of well recieved titles under their label.. not to mention they still have a massive following between youtube and twitch
loved the effort put into this slippin, keep up the hard work man
The RAID money was too much to resist, even for a frogman
Honestly I’m surprised I never even knew about this I used to be such a yogscast fan back in the day.
Loving the new vids like this they’ve been fun and informative :)
This video reads more like a Yogs hit piece. Taking Notch as a narrator and ignoring the people on the Yogs side and ignoring critical information? Going into all that drama as if it was critical to Yogventures and then presenting speculation that it was relevant as fact? You take Chris and the devs at total face value and barely criticising them, almsot babying them about how hard they had it and how sad it was for them. Meanwhile you take constant digs at the Yogs and make petty little jokes. Everyone involved here was an adult - they were naive and too eager and they all fucked it up but it’s long past now. Christ the Yogs only got bigger but you give that a cursory acknowledgement even though you painted them as some controversy factory.
It's definitely not intentional. Generally I tried to portray everything in an unbiast way. My pity towards Chris and the team simply came in response to how much the game appeared to be quite detrimental to their lives, especially for Chris himself and his marriage.
In terms of the Yogscast, although I no longer watch them I adore Simon and Lewis and am really thankful for the great vids I enjoyed when I was younger. There were a few more jokes at their expense but that's just because they appeared to have come out relatively unscathed from the controversy. I didn't intend for the jokes to come across as serious, but more as a sign of my endearment to them if anything.
As I mention in the vid, pretty much everyone involved just got out of their depth. There's no 'evil' party involved.
That being said I'll take a closer look at my content going forward to make sure I'm not seeming biast to one side.
You were TWELVE?! - I feel so old, can't handle it, out for a walk kthxbye
Imo they should have provided refunds as soon as the game became unfeasible. If they did that, I would chalk it up to basically the fact that shit happens and people are naive. But because neither group has, they have lost their reliability imo
The reality is they likely had no liquidity to afford to do that. Especially so early in the crowdfunding era, it really was basically untreaded territory for us average people to give money to projects like this. Ultimately the lesson learned long term, collectively, was that any Kickstarter or whatever is only to be used with money that could be burned and not be missed by the people funding.
I don't see how that's possible, they already lost a big chunk of the budget to the artists before development even started, even if you did refunds at the first sign of trouble you'd still be out 35,000$ of your own money just to afford the refunds and that's assuming the yogscast just have that much extra cash laying around
I think the sad truth is that in projects like these as soon as they get mismanaged the money winds up paid out to the employees who use it for living expenses and after just a few months of game development any possibility of refunding the money is out of the question as it's consumed unless you plan to take out a big loan and ruin your life just to pay the money back
someone has to eat the cost and at some point I just have to admit that if you pay money on kickstarter, it's a donation, they can pocket the money and run without even making a product if they so desire
No way they had the money for that. They shouldn't have tried in the first place is the reality of it. They have a decently succesful publishing company now but back then it was just some people with a recently succesful youtube channel.

Started watching them around this time in 8th grade. Being skeptical of everything, I had basically no interest in any products coming from RUclipsrs, and after seeing more and more videos of the game, I just had a feeling it'd all fall through anyways. By the time it was meant to come out I was in the latter years of highschool, I remember following the drama pretty vividly lol.
On a side note, a potentially interesting topic for a video could be Star Citizen, the game's been in development for like 14 years and still isn't remotely close to being fully released/complete. It's like this weird pyramid scheme of a game where a lot of their funding comes from a smaller dedicated player base buying overpriced in game items like space ships and cosmetics. It's had an obscene amount of money put into it and isn't remotely close to completion after over a decade.
Did they ever finish Shadow of Israphel? I remember waiting months for a new episode after they announced their game. I never checked back and only remember them when I saw this video
I don’t think so. That cliffhanger devastated me back then
They did not finish it, it took them many, many years to show what happened. They had this animator approach them to make iirc ep46 with this genuinely incredible animation showing what would happen if israphel manages to pull off his plans. That said whilst the animator got really far, he never finished his work and slowly began to ghost them. When weeks of work became months of waiting, it became harder to return to the show, when months became years, the wind was completely gone from their sails, and it was over by then.
So like, today, the infamous ep46 is out there, in an unfinished state, so at least you can see what would happen after the cliffhanger.

Even if this game wasn’t that bad I still feel like a lot of people wouldn’t play it anyway because not everyone knows what the yogscast even is. It could be a brilliant game but i think a lot of people would be gatekeeped from playing it purely because it’s filled with in jokes and references that only the regular yogscast viewer would understand. Similar to why DanTDMs show didnt really take off. It barely had an identity. Sure it had Dr Trayaurus in it, but those are just characters from his Minecraft series. In my personal opinion, If i were a popular RUclipsr making a game, id probably start fresh- no characters from the channel or references to the videos but the same sense of humour. I wouldn’t want a bunch of 12 year olds running around the world saying DIGGY DIGGY HOLE over and over again. It’s like making a game about steve buscemi and naming it “buscemiworld” or some shit.
I dunno, i cant explain it. I guess what im saying is id prefer to be known as the “RUclipsr that made a game” rather than the “RUclipsr that had a game slightly inspired by their videos made for them”
I mean, you gotta account for popularity in this too, like yes there were people who would not get the jokes but anyone interested in minecraft was bound to stumble upon yogscast, plus just from the looks of the game they were doomed since it looks so generic. Even with yogscast models it feels like some sort of movie tie game where they just put the movie characters outfit on polygons and said its good
Slippin! Love it. Love the topic of the video, love the man, the myth the legend.
Thank you king, too kind
As you admitted at the start Yogscast sold Minecraft to a tonne of people (me included) I think I bought 3 different versions. For notch to not recognise that and then go and abandon the project for a sweet 1 bill pay deal is pretty hypocritical and as they, rudely, stated were not appreciated by mojang. Kids liked the fbombing crudeness of Yogscast and I think it's a bit karenesq to demand them not to be themselves during minecon.
Tbf they fucked this up but now they have their own game studio with a bunch of games they make themselves
I liked the Kenshi madness a lot more, maybe Slippin is takeing a break from the sound of Corpseflies....
I love your way of doing this style of content and the stories you've told, please do more!!
It's incredibly ambitious to try and develop a game from scratch on a budget of half a million with zero experience. Especially because 150k od that is going to merch development, the 400k they had left barely covers game dev wages in California for a team of 4.
God i love how far you've come. Keep at it Slippin, love ya!
Amazing work dude! Im glad that i sticked around after kenshi videos wich are equally entertaining
Last thing anyone should do is listen to what notch has to say
do the math if every fan of the yogscast bought the game it would still be a fraction of the insane success the game had even back then
its a bit insane to say they had any effect worth measuring
The first episode of their minecraft series got 5 million views which was more than copies of the game were sold at the time. They absolutely had a part in its success.
I never watched Yogscast during their minecraft days, but I watch all their new stuff
I had no idea who Yogscast was at the time, still bought 4 copies of Minecraft for me and my friends. The game did good because it was a good game.
By the time they were playing minecraft it was already a thing. It aint like they were on the original OG tests where the world was a 100x100 floating platform and there were no animals or enemies. Notch built the game up, by himself, using /v/. That's where the popularity came from, and where Yogscast got onto it.
If anything 4chan should get the lions share of the credit for the games popularity. Or whoever made Infiniminer, which is where Notch stole the idea from.
Minecraft is still a huge game on its own merit. There have been hundreds of games that have been played by popular youtubers but none had the staying power of minecraft.
This is what we call anecdotal evidence. The Yogscast absolutely played a big role in signal boosting Minecraft early on.
@@XMysticHerox Cope. when minecraft got big I never heard of those clowns. its all a matter of perspective bud. btw drop the X X name shit, that crap died years ago.
@@XMysticHerox Not trying to prove a court case here. It's just very rare that I go out of my way to buy a multiplayer game for my whole friends circle. And Yogscast had nothing to do with it, is all. I'd say, if anything, they probably owe *their* success to Minecraft.
I backed Yogventures, only paid a little, I never even downloaded TUG, I was too pissed off lol
Who is notch?
Minecraft is created by Hatsune Miku.
Really enjoying these new videos!
I used to teach little kids at the park to swear.
Oh man that one hurt I loved the yogscast
My boy slippin thought I didn't catch you slippin releasing a banger
sigh raid sponsorship
Loving the new video format Slip
I remember being really excited for this when I was younger. The vision I had for it was like a more adventure oriented Minecraft. Almost like a 3D terraria i guess, or maybe Hytale is a better example (although thats in dev hell as we speak). Also I quite liked the concepts for the frog guys. I think I suspended my judgement because even though it looked rough I knew all games looked like that at early points in development. It's unfortunate it couldnt reach beyond where it was.
Ooof, this one tore open a closed wound... I don't remember what I pledged, but I remember the incredible disappointment in trying out TUG...
slippin takin shots at the bigshots
Excellent video Mister Slippin 😏🍷
They must be kicking themselves over how many minecraft clones there are on steam now.
I'm legit curious about who actually installs Raid when they see these sponsorships
ROFLLMFAO RAID SPONSOR!
Don't trust those yogs, but trust in RAID SHADOW LEGENDS GIVE AWAYS!
(nobody else got paid)
I thought your raids shadow legends plug would never end
This is why you always need someone to keep a close eye to expenses and keeping the scope of a project on a reasonable level
Everyone is always complaining about management companies mucking too much on gaming projects, and i'm agreeing, but they are necessary for not going overboard and ending up in development hell
Love all your contact dude keep doing what you do 😊
He got a raid sponsorship, he's officially made it.
We need a new kenshi video PLEASE I NEED IT!!!
Man i had forgotten about this game, and the yogscast, completely. What a fucking nostalgia trip
I'm honestly still ticked off by what happened and the fact my consolation was T.U.G.
Lovin these new video styles that compliment your voice.
