Reminds me of the Andy Warhol quote: “Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”

Writing consistently is great advice. However, I've found that physically typing words every day doesn't help me improve as a writer. While adding words to a manuscript is obviously important, it's the structure underneath the surface of the words that help us connect to a fiction story; the words are just the means of our brains translating it into our imagination. We've gotta be careful that we are in control of our process, and we aren't diving in without some sort of plan, otherwise we will eat up countless hours working on the structural issues in our stories.

i write everyday(well mostly), whether i love the scene i written, whether i want to burn it afterwards. I'm still going to write again.. i truly believe when u write all the time it just becomes some weird habit.

Absolutely loved this. I love the muscle analogy for creativity, it was such a game changer for me. For me consistency looks like writing every weekend, usually a few thousand words- that weekly consistency works better for me personally than daily just bc I struggle to write on work days. I feel like what type of consistency works for everyone is so personal, but what matters is showing up to the page regularly :) helps keep you immersed in the project too! Thanks for the vid 🫶🏼

100% consistency looks different for different people, I tend to write about four days a week, not every day. I love that you can write so well on weekends!!

I recently have come to the conclusion that being a writer is BELIEVING that you are a writer, not thinking you are one. You MUST believe you master the art of publishable grammar and forget everything else. Don't think you are a writer, KNOW you are a writer. This is how the greats, like Stephen King, became successful. They never thought; 'Is this line good enough?!!' They just wrote. Not sure how I myself are gonna implement this but if I ever continue writing I must become fearless. Stop thinking I can write, just know I can and do it. It's the only way forward.

I definitely believe in consistency. Even if not writing, there are a lot of things to be done towards developing the narrative. Even just 10 minutes a day towards the dream adds up. Great vid Miss Sara!

Wrote 16k words in like 5-6 days. I get some people have problems with staying consistent, but what I do is I write until my ideas die down. I wrote two chapters just doing that, mind you the chapters were like 4k-3k words but at least it was something to expand upon later. That's another thing to keep in mind -- write until you feel the chapter is done. You can always add more chapters, but writing just to make a chapter long takes away from the story of it. If the chapter feels done, let it be done.

Writing every day is not an option for most people. The problem I have with the quite by Brandon Sanderson to write 2K a day is unrealistic. He is a successful author with 60+ people working for him with a wife. I'm not sure if she's a stay-at-home mom, but no matter what, I know they are paying for someone to take care of his kids while he's writing.
Consistency doesn't equal daily writing and I love that you cover both of those sides. Either writing daily or writing a few times a week. It great to see both sides and to hear it from someone with a platform. Love you, Sara! Keep up the good work!

100% writing a lot every day is not what most people can do with jobs and families and life, I just had the perfect clip to include in the video about Sanderson lol. Progress is progress no matter the numbers :)

@@SaraLubratt Looking at it from this angle, one could also surmise that Paolini tries to keep other creative writers 'at bay', so that they systematically (!) confuse quantitative with qualitative criteria (every 'great' author has achieved his/her fame usually with one - sometimes even very small - book, not with a gigantic back catalogue nobody cares about): The market on lecturing wannabes on 'How to write a book' is now as big as the publishing market itself, and with every year that the readership declines, another eager over-egotistical author joins the ranks of wanting to produce fiction instead of reading (+ studying) what is already there (and what gets published every year on top of this massive two-thousand year old tradition).
Nobody really practises what they preach, and if you look at Paolinis output, it seems to me that he produces books in maniacal waves of work with many years in between where he seems to do 'nothing' but promoting exactly this hero's journey as a juvenile wunderkind (1998: Eragon 1, 2005: Eragon 2, 2008/2011: Eragon 3+4 - originally planned as one volume, but split into two parts -, and then, in 2020, 'To Sleep in a Sea of Stars' + his other newer works).

@@SaraLubratt I will say you set you video up really well 😂😂 Starting off by saying, “write every day” then switching to, “well, not everyone can write everyday” is a great way to see who of your audience finished the video or stopped partway through and ranted in the comments.

You could literally just do five minutes of writing a day and it would still count. Most people have time for 5 minutes, although I understand feeling a little too mentally overwhelmed for even that.

i set myself the goal of writing 100 words a day just 100, so low that i have no excuse not to write. what happens most the time is because i set such a low barrier is i write at least 2 or 3 times that much, but because its such a low goal I almost cant not do it. and i have written something like 9500 words so far this year on my new book whilst i wait for feed back on my last one.

Are you one of the authors who takes time to outline the book\chapter prior to writing or just go with the flow? The very few times I've written an outline even a bare bones one, I've noticed that I deviate from it and sometimes quite a bit. Do you prescribe to the idea that characters have a tendency to "take over" when you get into a flow?

Okay so idk how hot this opinion is or maybe it's just my personal experience - always start small.
I got very easily burned out when I was dealing with school and my personal life because I tried to reach a goal. Don’t do that. (It wasn't very obvious to me back then)
Set a reasonable goal within your schedule and first and foremost - try to make it a habit.
Making it a habit will help tremendously, but also being healthy about it.
You don’t have to feel extremely guilty for not writing that day. What's important is that you build up that consistency. It's not going to be easy in a week or even two weeks.
Big authors write full time and they have the time to get these thousands words out. I'm touchy about this subject because I was burned out for months and it wasn't pleasant.
Edit: I agree - writing is a muscle.

  • @TWEEKR

My writing has been stopped since months cause I can't figure out the path my story is going.
It's like I have figured out the ending but not the path as to how to reach there.
It feels like i wrote 32K words of garbage since there hasn't been any specific progress in storyline, but since that was my idea to slowly unveil that something is drastically wrong in this peaceful town.
But now I am stuck. Any suggestions? 🥲

    • @Dani_77709
      @Dani_77709 7 месяцев назад +3

I am not Sara and I haven’t seen the video yet so idk if any points here will be redundant, but I can give some tips that have helped me so maybe it might work for you:
      1) If you have the ending then you can start reverse engineer from there. How did certain characters end up in this specific location? What lead them there? Was it a person? A mysterious power?
You can ask more specific questions since you're the one who knows how it ends.
      2) Don't feel guilty about taking a break. That is if you feel like you need it.
That was my mistake and I was left burned out for about 6 months. During the beginning I felt extremely guilty about not writing, bit over time I overcame that.
Sometimes if you focus a lot on your story and you're just squeezing anything out...that's not going to work. Sometimes it's best to take a day or more off and do something else.
      3) This is related to second point - find what makes you feel inspired.
For me - I have character playlists. Those songs play a movie in my head and the emotions give me the drive to keep going.
If that doesn't work, then I watch certain multifandom videos/edits or couple videos/edits that has very emotional music and good editing.
I found that anything that makes me feel very strongly give me the push I need.
      4) Not writing doesn't mean you're not writing. Brainstorming is apart of the writing process.
      5) If you're stuck in a specific scene or really anything ask yourself - what is not working?
I have found if I get stuck in a scene it means I need to approach it from a different angle or maybe the characters aren't progressing the plot forward ect.
