- More Vocal Warmups! This video will walk you through SOVT exercises including straw phonation.
A great warm-up for singers, exercises for vocal efficiency, or rehab for a tired voice! Check out this series of Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises (SOVT - also called partially occluded vocal tract exercises). Work smarter, not harder, for a great singing voice. SOVT straw exercises, lip trills, and other semi-occluded work will quickly help your voice feel great. Works great as a daily vocal warmup, too!
Have you heard of singing through a straw to sing better and strengthen your voice? This and other types of partially occluded exercises are fantastic ways to warmup your voice as well as work for efficient singing and effective vocal fold closure.
These vocal exercises are appropriate for singers looking to improve your voice, warm up gently and effectively, as well as great for vocal rehabilitation of a tired or overused voice.

Excellent! Great info and clarification! Thank you, Kathleen!🙏🥰🙃
Glad it was helpful!
Love doing raspberries/lip trills they are great for reducing tongue tension. I sometimes practice these in my lower register to strengthen it.

I just tried this exercise along with other singing warm ups, and the change is very apparent while singing high notes! With time, I am hoping these exercises will make sure my high notes don't sound airy haha!
Sounds great! Keep at it.

U GOT MY SUB WHEN I SAW THE ART ON THE PIANO
Thank you so much for your guidance! I just started with you yesterday and I am so hopeful your lessons will help me regain my singing voice!
Glad to hear you're jumping back in!

I think you should have done a before and after song to show how the exercises help ;)
Thank you for this! Which is more advanced, a coffee straw or a milkshake straw? Thanks!
Great question! I'd say that neither is more advanced, just different. A coffee straw or something similar will provide a tremendous amount of back pressure and the user can't push too much air. But I really like that back pressure for working on range and passagio. A bigger straw with less back pressure feels like it needs a bit more of an exacting approach for air pressure to keep the sound steady.
If you haven't found it yet, this is my new favorite SOVT.... using a cup with a hole in it! ruclips.net/video/2zmTfsjBNF4/видео.html
Can you tell me how not having teeth might affect these exercises?
Exercises like singing through a straw or through a cup (linked below) will be very similar. If you don't have front/top teeth, then you'll need to substitute some labiodental sounds (like a V) - you can try lip trills, tongue trills, more straw work, hum, or sing on sounds like ng. 😊
I have a question Kathleen. When singing through the straw, is it just basically singing "ooo" not actually trying to force air down the straw? For some reason I seem tempted to do that. I love your videos, thank you!!
Thanks for your question! Yes, singing through a straw can feel SO weird at first...I definitely would encourage folks to think of singing "ooooh"... then, the straw is like an extension of the vocal tract.
@@VocalWarmupsWithKathleen Thank you Kathleen ☺
