  • The folklore, Mythology and symbolism of the Elder Tree.
    A tree rich in folklore and strongly associated with folk magic, witchcraft, and cunning folk, as well as death, rebirth and the idea of the sacred feminine - particularly the old woman or crone aspect.
    A complex and dual natured tree, associated with both endings and beginnings, the fey and fairy folk, the Otherworld and the Underworld.
    The 15th letter (Ruis) in the 'Celtic Tree Alphabet' known as Ogham, is also associated with the Elder Tree.
    I will tell some folklore and stories associated with the Elder Tree, including 'The Elder Tree Witch'

    In the 70s my mum made elderflower wine, she told me at the peak she made 80 gallons one year. I was too young to drink wine but I loved the scent of those barrels bubbling away and the good humour of my mum and dad when they were enjoying it.

    I've asked permission of the old lady before taking anything from her for as long as I can remember, I was taught this by our much loved neighbour who also taught me about medicinal plants, when I was a child, long ago. We hear so much about Celtic things but, coming from NE Scotland, I would identify more closely with Picts.

    • @TheStoryCrow
      @TheStoryCrow  2 месяца назад

      I know what you mean, we don’t talk up the Picts enough do we? Such incredible carvings in your part of the world. I suppose the Picts might have spoken a Brythonic language though and hence also been ‘celts’ to an extent? Problematic word really... Sometimes I prefer to use the term ancient Britons.

    In Italy local legend has it that the Catholic Church, during one of its frenzies, sought to eradicate the pagan elders (sambuca), using the wood to burn witches. Happily they didn't succeed. Wine and kindling are its main contributions to my life. I haven't noticed any escaping demons, though it will hiss and smoke if not properly dried. Thank you lovely for the myth and history!

    • @michaelcaffery5038
      @michaelcaffery5038 2 месяца назад +1

      I was just about to tell you it's considered bad luck to burn. Then the video said it. Probably because it can spit embers and cause a fire. I was surprised you use it for kindling. But perhaps it's ok when well dried for that. I used to make elderberry wine. You might want to try harvesting from different trees and noting which are best. They vary quite a bit. Maybe from genetic differences between individual trees or the environment. Soil type etc like the 'terroir' of grape wines.

    So proud to be from these beutiful celtic lands, although we have our problems like all countries, you cant deny there is a old magic in these lands that truly feels like home and each corner you turn there is an ancient tree, stone or mound. Scandanavia is simular with its own magic and memories of the old. I pray for America and hope peace comes to the lands once again, I love old America the southern, simple way to live no need for riches. I do hope to visit again one day. ❤

      Fun fact:
      "The Appalachian Mountains in North America and the Scottish Highlands are geologically related because they were once part of the same mountain range, known as the "Central Pangean Mountains," formed during the collision of continents when the supercontinent Pangea was forming. The separation occurred due to the opening of the Atlantic Ocean over time; essentially, they are remnants of the ancient Caledonian Mountain range that stretched across the North Atlantic before continental drift separated them." and "The Appalachian chain, which extends from Alabama to eastern Canada, was originally connected to the mountains of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales."

    I lived alone in the woods for some time . I was aware of the stories about Elder and that it was bad luck to burn. But as there was a large supply of dead elder wood I used it for my fire. True it isn't a good burner but it does keep a hot fire alive . I decided not to live in fear of Elder but to ask permission to use its wood. and to offer thanks and gratitude. I believe that nature responds to our level of consciousness and to fear it is outdated medieval superstition. Consequently I felt safe and protected by the presence of Elder

      Matriarch seems to imply someone who is in charge of and upholding a family, or societal structure. Crone on the other hand is someone who has come to a time in life where her energy is freed from mothering and other outward concerns and can use that energy for spiritual/psychic/wisdom pursuits.
      Random thoughts: A crone is powerful thus feared and despised. Denoting her as ugly means that she is no longer fending off sexual advances or available to be made pregnant and can own herself without inflaming an ego.We have negative words attached to certain groups and sometimes it is just empowering to own it. I'll take it.

      Crone - the wise old woman, the healer. In the Celtic tradition of the three aspect of a woman's life, or the triple Goddess, we see them as the maiden - the innocent child or youthful woman, the mother - the nurturer and the crone - the wise old woman.Oct 16, 2019"

    Another great video Oli! I’m not a long-time follower of your content but I’ve been here a few months. In that time I’ve noticed that you seem to equate witches and witchcraft with evil, similar to born-again Christians. I am a recovering Mormon who has felt drawn to my ancestors since early adolescence; now in my 60’s, I’ve been feeling drawn to learning more about the spirituality and rites of my Celtic ancestors, many of whom were witches. Are you aware that there are thousands, make that millions, of witches (female and male), wizards, magicians, mages and other magickal practitioners in this amazingly wonderful and powerful world that we share? Further, only a small percentage of those practitioners are involved in what could be considered "dark arts" or service-to-self activities; the vast majority of magickal practitioners (those who have discovered their own magickal powers, anyway) are in service to others or in service to that which is Light. Perhaps you could do a story, or even a series, in which a good magickal practitioner triumphs over a dark one. Remember, the type of practitioner (witch, wizard, sorcerer, mage, etc.) is in no way an indicator of their orientation (Light or Dark). Popular authors within today’s (light) magickal community include Jason Miller, Raymond Buckland, Mat Auryn and Scott Cunningham; the most well-known publisher of books about the magickal arts is Llewelyn Books. There are lots of magickal practitioners here on RUclips as well as Instagram, TikTok and no doubt other social media, as well. You’ve surely noticed that I have added a ‘k’ to the word magic in this comment; the spelling with only a ‘c’ usually denotes that which is performance- or entertainment-oriented whilst the ‘ck’ usually refers to that which is related to a spiritual practice. As a recovering Christian (what the world considers Christianity, at least), I’m finding spiritual connection through my ancestors as well as the nature spirits who are sharing the plot of land I currently call home with me. Anyway, I would love to see a series of stories that emphasize the power of Light over Dark regarding magickal practitioners. I believe in the power of stories to gradually reshape people’s misconceptions of things without it being so much of a shock resulting in what’s known as cognitive dissonance, or "psychological conflict resulting from incongruous beliefs and attitudes held simultaneously" (Merriam-Webster), or whenever new, conflicting information butts up with current paradigms, personal or collective. So, blessed be, Oli and Tam! 🎉💞
    And hey, what about some stories about or that include handfastings as you two prepare for your own next Summer Solstice at Glastonbury?!? What is the significance/tradition of each type of the materials that go into making the ‘cords that bind you’? Is it strictly dictated by traditions/heritage or does each couple create their own cord? I’ve seen velvet sashes, silken braids, even those with a vine-like look in tribute to the natural world. What are you two using, if you don’t mind sharing that with everyone? For those of us who are new to the Celtic pagan path, the history, legends, materials and traditions that surround this beautiful uniting ceremony would be most educational. Sorry so long and thank you again! 🎉💘🎊💞💫 🦋

    all roses have their roots in ignorance but their true beauty shines through and blossoms as they reach for the light. ignorance is the necessary fertilizer which enables us to germinate and directs us to the path of wisdom.i think suffering or hardship is a necessary evil to give us the opportunity and freewill to take a different path , without comparisons we would simply just be, but duality implies a purpose to life at least for our souls or spirit ? just a subjective opinion going by my own experiences .

    How does someone ask a tree for permission to cut it?

      Same way you’d ask a person 🤷‍♂️

      @@TheStoryCrow @ginger_crvst I heard a story from a friend, of their friend, who wanted to tap a birch tree, so asked the tree permission and felt a kind of shock of resistance (quite a strong response) and looked up and saw a wound in the tree :-)
      u can ask out loud or in your head and sense the response , the trick is then to listen to it n not resist x

      @@ditchpixey Thanks!
      I was just curious as it to if there was a specific process or if you just sort of had to sense it like you said. Suppose it depends on where and who you are

    The reason knowledge has to be acquired is because the key is to ascend to a higher plane and not come back here for if you our reborn back on this human form it’s because they never learnt the key knowledge of all befor they pass on to the all light

    You can grow them easely by taking cuttings. First ask permission to the tree.

    There is no death only rebirth natural nature is telling this from the very first tree and the very first all of all everything goes back to the all and is reborn

    Always ask permission of the elder mother if you want to move her babies elsewhere otherwise it won't grow.
