Oh look i finally made it to the big screen! Lol
The music of the film was composed by Hans Zimmer who also did Pirates of the Caribbean one or two years later . And yes the Cezar was played by the same actor who played Dumbledore.
That man has talent!! I literally have a playlist of his movie soundtracks and Gladiator is my top Fav!
@@raquelchukwurah1185 Totally agree he can make you feel like a hero and a few seconds later make you cry like a baby.
@@alexflorea4879 facts lol
The dirt was a reminder of him being a farmer
The actor who played Caesar Marcus Aurelius was Richard Harris, a great actor who has been in a fuckton of great movies.
The smelling of the dirt is to root himself in the moment. To remind Maximus, the farmer, what he fought for. Where he came from. Where he would eventually return.
It upsets me to no end when someone says this is pirates music. This movie was first!!! Lol. Plus it’s so much better than any pirates movie. I can’t remember I single pirates movie, but I can recall every scene of this movie.
Another big actor in here is OLIVER REED who played Proximo. He was a legendary old hollywood actor. He actually died during the filming of this film and they had to change the script slightly to work around his absence. RIP
The black guy is Djimon Hounsou and I would say his best movie is Amistad. It’s about of group of Africans that are sold and shipped to America on the ship Amistad. Along the way the way, they take over the ship, but are soon arrested and have to be represented in court to prove they were stolen from their homeland.
Geez, you guys are crazy! This is an A+ masterpiece. And 300 can't carry its codpiece, FFS. smh
Having said that, I appreciate your candor. (But you're still crazy. lol)
Because you were still respectful lol that’s fair it was a dope movie though
Pirates of the Caribbean has a lot of music FROM Gladiator.
Djimon Hounsou is also very good in Amistad.
The guy who plays Joffrey in Game of Thrones based his acting on Commodus in this film. Brilliant work.
If I’m not mistaken, people hated Joaquin Phoenix from his portrayal as Commodus so much I think someone was even ready to throw hands with him at a grocery store.
Also during filming, Joaquin was so stressed about his quality of performance so much and over analyzing his shit. In order to calm him down Richard Harris tells Russell Crowe “Let’s get him pissed.” Russell agreed and bought a shit ton of Guinness. Joaquin was plastered as fuck but calm
Ridley Scott also directed movies like Black Rain, Thelma & Louise, The Martian, etc. He's also making a sequel to Gladiator. Hans Zimmers is a popular movie composer, and he also did Pirates of the Caribbeans. Gladiator was such a successful film, it was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and only winning 5 Oscars for Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, Best Actor for Russell Crowe, and taking home for Best Picture.
Yet it's not the best "war" movie according to theses experts.🙄
@@rollotomassi6232 im no expert but i do agree with them. D: this is a stellar movie as a whole. best "war" movie though, no. ^^
well done sires. This story and at its time was next level powerful and inspiring . Movies like 300 , Troy followed and took this base formula from gladiator to capture ancient times with epic battle scenes. Gladiator kind of raised the bar on these types of movies and still top 3 to me
My dad did the wild eyebrows and crazy wig for our Swords & Sandals toga party. 😂
I was born in 1985. This movie is my Ironman 1/ dark knight rises.
Gladiator is my favorite of all time
Commodus knows how to wield a sword but he can't fight. He trains with soldiers who can't kill or hurt him because he's the emperor's son.
Guys.. You know Gladiator was out 2000, why are you asking why it sounds like Pirates of the Caribbean when this movie came out 3 years before the other? A simple google search would have told you that Hans Zimmer is the composer of both movies
They obviously aren’t gonna do a simple google search while watching the movie .. how about don’t be a sarcastic prick
The thing with the Sand is like chalk when lifting weights. The sand reduces sweat so that he has Better grip with the sword.
lol. no. he’s a farmer. it reminds him of home.
To be fair him killing his father was somewhat understandable compared to the other stuff.
His dad was killed by a monster of his own making.
Also for the great and wise Marcus Aurelius it’s stupid to tell your heir he’s no longer the heir to the Roman Empire………..alone without writing it down first.
If you wondering about why rubs dirt in his hands, the actor said it was something he do on his farm and said since the character was a farmer when he wasn’t a general he thought he would do the same thing
This movie came before pirates of the caribbean.
Many of the musical experiments from Gladiator would lead directly on to Zimmer's work on the Pirates of the Caribbean and Dark Knight films, and by the end of the decade, he was the Hollywood film composer.
Master and commander is a greqat russel crowe movie, if you are interested.
I read an article awhile back that stated the dirt sniffing was a ritual. It acts as an reminder of what he’s fighting for… his family and his home which is a farm.
That’s what we figured too!
I would also say rubbing the dirt on his hands keeps his sword from slipping when it gets wet.
blood diamond is number 1 for Djimon Hounsou for sure. greatest performance ever
I agree! Gotta show my gf that !
@@mrflickswatches Also good to watch: Amistad (1997)
I'm da camera man D:
Wouldnt call Quintus a snake tbf. He just served the Roman empire. What he was commanded to do though, is another thing. He didnt know about Ceasar's handover to Maximus... In the end he didnt even help out the Emporor with a sword, because he respected Maximus and granted a fair fight.
Thank you for your service ❤
historic notes
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 26 April 121 - 17 March 180 was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD and a Stoic philosopher. He was a member of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, the last of the rulers known, but later, as the Five Good Emperors and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace, calm, and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161.
Marcus Aurelius was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus, and the heiress Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three, and he was raised by his mother and his paternal grandfather. After Hadrian's adoptive son, Aelius Caesar, died in 138, the emperor adopted Marcus's uncle Antoninus Pius as his new heir. In turn, Antoninus adopted Marcus and Lucius, the son of Aelius. Hadrian died that year, and Antoninus became emperor. Now heir to the throne, Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He married Antoninus' daughter Faustina in 145. After Antoninus died in 161, Marcus Aurelius acceded to the throne alongside his adoptive brother, who reigned under the name Lucius Verus. Under his rule the Roman Empire witnessed heavy military conflict. In the East, the Romans fought successfully with a revitalized Parthian Empire and the rebel Kingdom of Armenia. Marcus defeated the Marcomanni, Quadi, and Sarmatian Iazyges in the Marcomannic Wars; however, these and other Germanic peoples began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. He modified the silver purity of the Roman currency, the denarius. The persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire appears to have increased during his reign, but his involvement in this is unlikely since there is no record of early Christians in the 2nd century calling him a persecutor, and Tertullian even called Marcus a "protector of Christians".The Antonine Plague broke out in 165 or 166 and devastated the population of the Roman Empire, causing the deaths of five to ten million people. Lucius Verus may have died from the plague in 169.Unlike some of his predecessors, Marcus chose not to adopt an heir. His children included Lucilla, who married Lucius, and Commodus, whose succession after Marcus has been a subject of debate among both contemporary and modern historians. The Column and Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius still stand in Rome, where they were erected in celebration of his military victories. Meditations, the writings of "the philosopher" - as contemporary biographers called Marcus - are a significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. These writings have been praised by fellow writers, philosophers, monarchs, and politicians centuries after his death.
Commodus 31 August 161 - 31 December 192 was a Roman emperor who ruled from 177 to 192. He served jointly with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 until the latter's death in 180, and thereafter he reigned alone until his assassination. His reign is commonly thought as marking the end of a golden age of peace and prosperity in the history of the Roman Empire the Pax Romana. Commodus accompanied his father during the Marcomannic Wars in 172 and on a tour of the Eastern provinces in 176. The following year he became the youngest emperor and consul up to that point, at the age of 16. During his solo reign, the Roman Empire enjoyed reduced military conflict compared with the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Intrigues and conspiracies abounded, leading Commodus to revert to an increasingly dictatorial style of leadership, culminating in his creating a deific personality cult, including his performing as a gladiator in the Colosseum. Throughout his reign, Commodus entrusted the management of affairs to his palace chamberlain and praetorian prefects, namely Saoterus, Perennis and Cleander.
Commodus' assassination in 192, by a wrestler in the bath who held him underwater, marked the end of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. He was succeeded by Pertinax, the first emperor in the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors.
If I had lived back then, I would've had a season pass for the Coliseum, now that's for sure ! 😉

pirates came after this bro bro
Yeah we know ! Came out in 2003 I believe, it’s unfortunate that that’s what comes to peoples mind it’s the more popular movie for sure!
But loved the music in this as well
funny as i was sitting watching this in the cinema in 2000, i loved the music, i have never seen the pirates films so me the music is gladiator
Next Russell Crowe movie should be L.A Confidential!!! You will love the star power and plot!
The music is made by Hans Zimmer, who also did the music for Pirates of the Caribbean
Caesar was played by Richard Harris, also in A Man Called Horse...The Count of Monte Cristo...The Quick and the Dead..just to name a few.
Marcus Aurelius is considered a philsopher emperor of Rome, the last of "The Five Good Emperors". His son, Commodus, reigned jointly with him for three years. Previous "good emperors" picked out one or more young males, adopted them as sons, and trained them to be their successors. When Marcus died, Commodus became sole emperor at about age 18, long before he was mature enough, though he did reign alone for 10 years.
Commodus reign is considered the end of Rome's golden age. Commodus actually had four sisters and his reign was marked by many plots against him, some by his brother-in-laws and sisters.
Commodus the emperor was proud of his physique and began to demand people treat him as a new Hercules. He took to the arena as a gladiator where he always won since his opponents always surrendered after acting out a fight instead of being executed. Since gladiators were mostly slaves, the nobility of Rome was disgusted by these performances by their emperor, and everyone saw through these staged fights.
Eventually, a professional wrestler killed Commodus in his bath, paid by people who thought Commodus had them marked for death. He was succeeded by "The Year of the Five Emperors", a civil war set off by various strong men who each thought they had a shot of becoming emperor.
the sniffing dirt part, han so many meanings. but mostly its a ritual of his.. call it superstition if u want, idc.. it reminds him of home, where he gets soil on his hands instead of blood. he also gains the grip because he is a chach warrior big swinging cucumber, it grounds him as in not having been corrupted by greed, it makes the audience feel more connected too, etc etc. Its a frekkin common man with a simple ritual.
Definitely watch BRAVEHEART next
Amistad is a great movie with Djimon Honsou
Richard Harris played Marcus Aurelius in gladiator, Michael Gambon played Dumbledore.
Richard Harris played dumbledore in the first 2 Harry Potter films. He passed away and he was replaced by Michael Gambon :)
39:25 Those are the gates of Elysium ... "roman heaven" ... where he will reunite with his wife and son. [That's why it is discoloured.]
This is one of my favorite movies of all time!
A movie with Djimon Hounsou you may not know is In America. I highly recommend it.
It's always a pleasure to see your reactions
Appreciate that fam 🙏🏼
Klaus was one of the music composers in Gladiator and he also composed the music in Pirates of the Caribbean
This was way before pirates of the Caribbean so if anyone copied score pirates did.
Kingdom of Heaven!! you NEED to watch that, it's an AMAZING "war" movie about Jerusalem, with TONS of amazing actors
This is my favourite Russel Crowe movie, my next fave of his would be Mystery Alaska, a sports/drama/comedy
Nice !!
Personally, I think it shows that you pay attention to things to recognize the composer/music style.
Same with recognizing and referencing artists work.
Who cares that you were born when you were so you didn't experience everyone's careers in chronological order. I am enjoying discovering your channel. I also like that you film with different people.
Appreciate you ! 🙏🏼
He was sniffing the dirt for the smell of fresh Earth that wasn't stained with blood.
definitely check out blood diamond by far his best movie in my opinion and he's a huge part of it
Part 2 the sequel be coming in the future.
Richard Harris played Dumbledore in Harry Potter and also played Marcus in Gladiator. Your instincts was right Brain!
Side note: in ancient Rome, you could adopt a full grown man to be your heir even if you had natural children. So had (film)Marcus Aurelius lived through the night and changed his will, it would have changed things for Commodus.
Many of the Roman Emperors were adopted "sons".
Movie is dope 🔥👀
IF you want to watch one of the best "war movies" ... you should watch *Das Boot* (1981 movie/series) ... but go for the longest version you can find (there is a miniseries and a cut-down version of a movie), because there are soo many different scenes that got cut in the movie. It is based on a book written by a "war reporter" from WWII based upon real experiences and stories told by colleagues.
[There seems to be a relatively new series ... no idea about that ... go for the original, because it had really good practical effects.]
Scott did just the first Alien, the only and the best
Djimon's best movie? For stupid action, as the killer in The Island. For real impact, Amistad. The school took my whole class to see it. GIVE US FREE
You guys have to see The Green Mile ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I sure will ! ✔️
Pirates of the caribbean came out 3 years after this so if the music is the same it's pirate that took it from this .
Great movie ❤
You know it's going to be a good movie when Hans Zimmer does the music, that's all I have to say lol. If you want to do a film fitting for Halloween, I suggest What We Do In The Shadows by Taika Waititi. It's a mockumentary comedy film. If you've ever seen the tv show The Office, it's basically like that, except this is about a group of long living vampires who are roommates in modern day new zealand. It's very witty and hilarious. They later made a tv series with the same name based on the film, so make sure you watch the film (Taika plays one of the vampires).
Taika Waititi also directed the oscar winning WWII film Jojo Rabbit, it takes the satire black comedy route for WWII. Very funny, but it still treats the topic of the Holocaust and Nazis seriously, despite it's comedic tone. Scarlett Johansson is in it too, Taika plays Hitler.
Two other great movies by Russell Crowe:
1. American Gangster
2. LA Confidential
He’s in American gangster?
@@mrflickswatches yes, him and Denzel Washington
@@RABrillantes ohhh bet that’s coming soon ! ✔️
Cinderella Man too is incredible
Check out Apocalypto and Last of the Mohicans.
Nice job, fellas! Insights, reading the clues throughout the movie, and sympathy for the right people. May I respectfully suggest another Russell Crowe movie for you to react to? "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," directed by Peter Weir. Another action movie, set in Napoleonic wars, naval battles, etc., with fantastic characters that win you over. A film that is, sadly, greatly ignored.
C'mon with the pirates of the Caribbean crap guys, it's getting monotonous, I'm still hoping to give you a thumbs up before the video finishes it's excellent apart from that
Just our opinion. Like or no like it’s a view so thanks
Ridley Scott made the FIRST Alien movie, and then he made "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant." James Cameron made the second one, David Fincher made the third one and Jean Pierre Jeunet made the fourth one.
James Cameron's "Aliens" is not just as-good or better than the original, it's one of the best sci-fi action movies ever. Fincher's "Alien 3" is not so good. It does *look* cool and Fincher goes on to make better movies like "Fight Club" and "Seven"
Jeunet's "Alien: Ressurection" is... werid. It's not *good* but it's bizarre enough to actually be entertaining in a WTF sort of way. Jeunet's quirky sensibilities are showcased much better in "City of Lost Children" and "Delicatessen"
Scott also made:
The Duelists
Blade Runner
Legend
Black Rain
Thelma and Louise
GI Jane
Blackhawk Down
Hannibal (sequel to "Silence of The Lambs")
The Martian
Matchstick Men
American Gangster

But you could react to Finding Nemo *cough* *cough* great movie. Loved your reaction to Gladiator! You should check out Patriot with Mel Gibson... phenomenal movie and also on my list of greatest movies of all time
By far my favorite, better than 300, Troy in my opinion. This movie stayed with me for days after watching.
After u watch braveheart watch last of the moihcans

If y’all haven’t seen it, the Patriot is a good war movie😊
Heard a lot about it no I haven’t seen it !
This and joker are jaquine best roles.
He gets to know the dirt before each fight cus he could be lying there.
I'm 90 percent sure Maximus is walking through the Elysian fields to see his family. The Elysian fields are like heaven for Romans.
Watch Russel Crowe's movie Romper Stomper
Have you seen Bladerunner yet. Must see.
Djimon hounsou best movie hand down would be Blood Diamond.

When I first saw pirates of the Caribbean I was thinking why does the sound track sound like Gladiator lol
Can’t believe you hadn’t seen gladiator before! A personal fave but I find it’s a bit marmite and a few friends hate it. Also the “maybe they are brother and sister” 😂 GoT has corrupted us all !! although obviously this one is a bit more one sided here in terms of the love

why dont you guys just look the actors up before the film? IMDB. and the composer and the director.
Don’t get the shock factor if we know everyone in there that’s a part of a reaction.. not knowing anything going into it
Then it isn't a blind reaction. Some don't want to know anything about what they will be seeing.
Some do check on that stuff, much as you would if picking what movie to watch and saying "oh, I liked other Scott movies. Crowe was good in __ so this should be interesting" . That was how I chose to see Gladiator at the theater not knowing anything else about it.
Watch Good Will Hunting or The Green Mile
Green mile is coming !
Troy Brad Pitt
I’m watching that with girlfriend I’ve seen it few times
Best movie with the black gladiator was amistad.
Anybody tell you something else they’re lying to you.
You cant blame the younger generation recognising pirates of the Carribbean more than gladiator. Gladiator came first with the soundtrack, Hans Zimmerman just recycled it for Pirates of the Carribbean.
Why, though? It's not like _Gladiator_ was an obscure movie that came and went. It was the second highest-grossing film of 2000 and won a bunch of Oscars, including Best Picture. Hans Zimmer was even nominated for Best Score.
I don't know. Maybe because I let my toddlers and little kids watch Pirates and other Disney movies before watching R rated movies?
People get introduced to things as they do. Interest, taste, time & age play a part. Especially, if it was made before their time. Not everyone was as movie driven as others at the time either.
hi guys, nice reaction
but you laugh and talking at most serious moments, it confused me all time...)
No not really Commodus, really not that mercyful , trudont
Comparing gladiator to 300? SMH
