great guy. giving an honest opinion while holding back tears. this is not him acting. always liked Ethan Hawke
I have to agree.
truly heartfelt, love this man
I've always felt that he was just a tad on the pretentious side, but he sure seems like a good and decent person.
When I was in high school, which was over 20 years ago, we saw movies like Dead Poets Society and Swing Kids as a part of our collective education. I love that he brought up River Phoenix and Gus Van Sant. My Own Private Idaho is absolutely fantastic. Keanu Reeves is one the actors from that same generation. He's an amazing character! These guys are the actors that truly made a significant impact in my life.
It's nice to see when actors like Ethan Hawke opens up. He's alive when he speaks which deliver these things with an impact. It's beautiful!
He's voice is so soft and I can feel his sadness
Ethan has a heart of gold.
Very well put
“It didn’t come for free.”
"It didn't come for free"
Any of us who struggle with depression and work hard at what seems natural, know what it is to be like Robin Williams post-scene, alone and depleted.
Thank you Ethan for always remembering river phoenix. So much respect
@Lisa Surlie No, he was cremated you psycho troll.
I don’t think anyone could ever forget River
"It didn't come for free." - That's powerful. Hold on to that quote - it will make you a better person and the World a better place.
Thanks, Ethan.
I like the way you put it. Thank you.
Wonderfully said. I just gained more respect for Hawke as a human being.
Ethan Hawke and Robin Williams worked together in "Dead Poets Society"
Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman worked together in "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead"
His feelings about both actors are incredibly thoughtful and genuine. He is not one of those actors who pretend like people that suddenly passed away meant more to him than they really did because it's the popular thing to do. He doesn't feign sadness and adoration for actors he didn't know. It's clear how much they meant to him both professionally and personally.
And this is why Charlie is the best: He shows a clip, asks a question and just lets Hawke run with it instead of trying to cut in with pointless banter.
averyaugust Absolutely, he is wonderfully insightful here about these extraordinary colleagues of his, and I loved what he had to say. I also want to add that he says something extremely important about depression and creative people--and about pretty much anyone who works very hard and passionately in his or her career. "It comes at a cost". It can be draining to devote so much of your skills and talents to do great things. We as audiences and receivers of those talents can so easily appreciate those efforts, but we really should pay attention to those moments when those brilliant people are not "on" and are drained by their work. That's when you can see what is really going on underneath.
averyaugust AND Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix worked together in "Invaders"
averyaugust maybe in this interview. but rose is notorious for interrupting in most interviews.
@@richfictionfighter Explorers
Ethan Hawke worked with River Phoenix in 'Explorers'. He once said that River was his first scene partner.
Always enjoy listening to Ethan speak. He's incredibly thoughtful and genuine.
Props to charlie rose for being such a great listener
One of the rare occasions though.
About damn time. He is infamous for interrupting
Too bad he wasn’t a great listener to the women who told him, “No!”
@@USASecretHistory Word
That's the longest I've seen Charlie go without stepping on his guest.
You can tell that he is on the verge of tears during this whole response.
In just over 3 mins he spoke more sense than most actors say in a life time.
well said and true indeed..
There are actors-artists and there are "actors"-celebrities.
Similar to Jeff Bridges, someday the Academy should wake up and honor this guy and all his great performances.
Bridges has an oscar though
He was incredible in Training Day.
Fuck me I am in tears. River was so beyond his years. Thanks Ethan.
You can just see it and hear it in Ethan's voice. Art is hard and great art is damn near mind breaking, but without it, were nothing
Very underrated actor stay strong
This is a stunning and eloquent acknowledgment of the human condition and the truths that are managed as actors wrestle with how to portray complicated characters. It’s hard NOT to love Ethan for HIS obvious love for these people in his life.
Extraordinary.
Heartbreaking realization that he is right about things not coming for free and his anecdote about Robin.
What a beautiful and sensitive man!
It annoys me that during this entire video, all i can think of is how many times today's talk show hosts would have interrupted Ethan, thank you Mr. Rose for actually allowing the guest to respond and speak.
That's what happened with Stephen Colbert when he was being interviewed about Magnificent Seven.
You would think because of how emotional and how close to tears he is, that that might not happen and maybe it won't but, who knows.
I love Ethan. Such a warm, gentle, humble and appreciative soul. Not to mention one of the best artist's of not only his generation, but ever. This was so refreshing to hear but most people only want to talk about themselves.
is it. wierd i am always in tears hearing this....
When he talked about Robin coming off set and sitting aside...it broke me. I can just see the amount of energy and emotion he put in...it doesn't come free...it drains you when you invest so much.
What a rare and wise talent
I love ethan hawke. A true OG actor that often gets overlooked
such a gentleman.. talkin.. poor lad is holdin it together.. u can tell by the number of times..he says you know!!..
It's an unforgettable part of this interview. And why we miss Charlie Rose. This was only 6 years ago, but feels longer. Every night there was an interview, or two, or three, and there would be moments like this, unexpected, graceful, resonant, truthful, that you wouldn't forget. Just simple, honest conversation. We have nothing like this now and cancel culture took this away.
Ethan's words seem to reverberate so much realness here...
I love how Charlie doesn't interrupt Ethen and just lets him talk.
i've always admired and been inspired by Robin, Philip and River too :(
Holy Shit!!! What a piece of film you have captured here (Charlie). I will never look at Ethan Hawke the same. A brilliant string of words. Lovely!!! Memorable. "It doesn't come for free!!!"
He’s so sweet adorable. Great human being and actor.
Hawke is eloquence itself. It doesn't come for free....
agree with Holland, also truer words never spoken- " it doesn't come free"
"It didn't come for Free" gave me chills.WOW
This still speaks to me to this day! Sleep well my brothers, RIP. Ethan's words and incite will forever bring me enough comfort and understanding to cope.
I just want to hug the guy.
I’m staying sober starting today.
Hope you’re keeping up. Good luck 👍
I hope your doing WELL 🤍😁 Every day is a new day...to be Happy...to start fresh...if you woke up today then God has a purpose for you 🙏🤍🙏
This brought tears to my eyes, so real and heartfelt. Even though he speaks so softly and eloquently you can feel the weight of the despair and loss he feels. Such outstanding actors and huge losses. Ethan is incredibly gifted and also seems like a loyal and great friend to have.
Always admired Ethan Hawke's work and like him even more now.
You will often hear people say that there aren't any true "movie stars", whatever that means, around to today like yesteryear. Ethan though, is one. Thoughtful, articulate, passionate, considerate, humble, and a fine actor with it.
I saw Hoffman in Death of a Salesman. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house at the end.
Simply wow. So eloquent.
What a fascinating man.
tried to not cry thru this, but when he brought up river...well damn, the tears flowed like a river right there
RIP legends
Met him many times so in love with his spirit
Unfortunately the actual question Charlie Rose initially asked was "What is your favorite type of deli sandwich?"
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL *ON THE FUCKING FLOOR RECOVERING FROM LAUGHING SO HARD*
So what? Hawke got down to the meat of the matter. Are you truly that shallow as to post that crap?
Gordon Hall Relax Drama Queen... im not shallow, I just have a sense of humor . What Ethan said was touching.. but you need to chill.
John Stevens No. Don't need to chill. People like you need not to make light of things as serious as this. It makes you seem, somehow, vacuous and irrelevant. ...
I'm no "drama queen" queen, I'm just dedicated to the study of the black box and what makes genius go awry.
Hope that meets with your absent-minded, absurd approval? Oh woops! I was being a drama queen again. :)
Gordon Hall I suffer from bipolar depression and anxiety with OCD . Trust me when I say I'm not making light of it. I know exactly what even is talking about. to try to wake up everyday and put on a smile...do normal things... Is one of the bigger challenges that I face.. and let's not even talk about socializing with other people! Lol at times I'd rather chew on glass. It comes with a price. I get that ,100%. If I offended you in anyway with my comment... then I apologize I think you misunderstood .I was not laughing at hawke .. i was rather caught off guard by that funny "sandwich" comment. now if I offended you with that! A chance apologize for my sense of humor. but!I can keep my comments to myself and think of how others would feel.
That was beautiful and poetic. A true actor.
He's just talking about people he worked with and admired . He's genuinely upset. I think a lot of actors are full of shit but as soon as they tend to be real that's when people like to put them under the microscope n dehumanize them. I always liked this dude
You in Before the Devil knows your Dead was STELLAR ☮️🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏💞💞
"It doesn't come for free"
Take care
And take Your Time Young Man 💯💪💪💯💯
One of the greatest actors remembering two of the greatest actors. An honour to watch..
I like how Mr rose just let him talk he new those comments were coming from the heart
It's surprising how many actors have worked with both Robin Williams and Philip Seymour Hoffman:
Ethan Hawke, Matt Damon, Edward Norton, Jeff Bridges, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Amy Adams, Ben Stiller, Julia Roberts, Julianne Moore, others Im sure
+richfictionfighter Josh Hutcherson
Joaquin Phoenix,Hillary Swank,Tom Hanks,Jeff Bridges,Jude Law,,Willem Dafoe,Jennifer Lawrence,John Travolta to mention a few...Fun fact; Both of them actually despiced to work with black actors but their staff and assistants were mostly black folk.
Great to see him and Denzel together again.
Rip River Phoenix, Robin Williams & Phillip Seymour Hoffman
It doesn't stop when your 40 and it's a tough road,it's amazing what a good interviewer can do when they just let the person talk, make sense, not make sense
Superb!
Touching
Top actors who died with pure dignity and love of movies its raw very raw too see hear and be part of something that effectively kills you inside everyday
Very smart answer.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was mesmeric as the nasty "Freddie" in The Talented Mr. Ripley... and his characterization of Truman Capote was so real it was frightening.
It's his Freddie performance which always stuck me above all else. He's just.. electric
@@nefariousnilbog Yes, and his work in Magnolia, too. Boogie Nights, The Ides of March, etc. He was brilliant, no matter the size of the role.
@@waynej2608 Tiny part in Big Lebowski but brought the character to life wonderfully
@@nefariousnilbog Yes, another part, that Hoffman nailed. Love that film! The dude abides. 😎👍
really beautiful and poignant words from Ethan Hawke
Have always enjoyed his acting
Im crying
Wow. In awe of this.
So beautifully said... EH is a brilliant artist ...
Very moving tribute to three great American actors.
Rest in powerful peace my favorite celebrity (and homie) of all time Robin Williams🙏

What an incredibly eloquent, heartrending, insightful 3:30 from an amazing individual
he's become one of the great actors of our time. check out 'Maudie' (not sure of spelling)
Great film. He plays the artist's husband. The artist was played by Sally Hawkins, who, like Hawke, was freaking awesome. I saw it once, and need to watch it again. Acting just doesn't get much better than this.
great genuine rip
Such a good appraisal of his comrades.
Rest in powerful peace Philip Seymour Hoffman 🙏

A good man remembering other good men.
This was an incredibly moving monologue, ya know?
Wow, Ethan, such wisdom from you. I loved you in "Snow Falling On Cedars", by the way.
You are a great man and a great Actor Mr Ethan Hawke! Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of my fave Actors ever! Too bad gone to soon!
People like River Phoenix and like Heath Ledger would’ve been the biggest artists had they lived longer, Ethan himself is a fantastic actor I’d say along with Hoffman and Robin Williams
I miss phil hoffman so much
Always liked Ethan Hawke, good solid actor and nice he remembers his co actors with respect.
This is great stuff 👍
Hawke's sensitivity has always come through his work, ever since the beginning.
I had the honor of meeting Ethan this summer in Minneapolis, thanks for the chat, Ethan. Try to keep authentic, buddy. Your deceptive tactics are not an admirable trait, but you, Philip and Robin do indeed have an amazing talent for telling and disseminating fairy-tales...
Hawke in Dead Poets was sublime.
Unfortunately the actual question Charlie Rose initially asked was "Could you do a Tom Waits impression for me?"
Ethan is not my favourite actor, but he is a guy who has many stories to tell, so it is the most interesting of his, the way he tells an anecdote and you can't stop to stare at him listening what he tells, so that's why he's so special. Besides, he's a lucky man because, he's been surrounded by greatest actors, such as Robin Williams & River Phoenix.
Good lord what a statement
Beautiful speaker...it didn't come for free
Hawke is one of those actors who could have taken the RomCom route and rode his looks into a lucrative easy career. Instead, he has taken chances and made interesting and sometimes great art. Actors like Hawke keep cinema and theater viable. Thanks for doing that for people like me who love cinema. PS-doing a movie about Flannery O’Connor will hold you in good stead with me for an eternity-one of the great writers of the last 100 years.
that was as genuine as an actor can get from what I've seen, not the usual bandwagon bullshit
Ethan is such an insightful and articulate story teller, this was truly tragic yet beautiful to listen to.
The comments are funny to me: Ethan Hawke is just acting here, he's mythologizing the struggles of famous actors, etc. etc. I have many things I could say about this, but I'll stick to one. Acting may be one of the only professions that puts you in contact with how your own behaviour is constructed, modulated, protean, opportunistic, and so on. Once you're observant of how you develop a Self and how you portray that Self, you become aware that other ways of interacting with the world are not only possible but authentic, you can bear out all kinds of plausible behaviour, and even while you could inhabit contradictory selves you also truly see that no choice is neutral or without impact. Life becomes very complicated. If he is acting his grief and sense of gravity here, he is only acting it as much as anyone does, but he has better tools to do it with. That may sound like psychopathy, but it's not quite the same thing. The manipulation that actors use is different, because its goal isn't directed only at power, it's also directed at truth. I agree with him, it's not easy to live this way, and I believe that for such people there would be a "demon in the woods" that says life is meaningless, all of it merely play and subterfuge. Artists sadly don't know how to create only what is helpful for people without the byproducts that come with its creation: disorientation, hollowness, and isolation. Take care everyone.
Interesting comment but, unfortunately for you, it’s even arrogant and partly mistaken. You pretend to know that Ethan is acting here, while you know nothing about his memories with the people is talking about.
@@matteg.3587 I'm sorry that I came across so insensitive. I had to reread my comment because I had no memory of it lol. I still agree with what I said, but I would qualify it. Emotions are still real, and memories can carry indelible emotional weight. What I think I was trying to say is that feeling something and looking like you're feeling something are two different things, and in acting you only need to be able to do the second to succeed. The danger is when an actor, or anyone, loses sight of which is which and how they interact. In Ethan Hawke's case here, and the comments criticizing him for acting, I wanted to suggest that perhaps being able to convey emotion effectively is a powerful tool for handling real emotions. It's when conveying emotions is not done with intention, or done in the same way whether they are real or constructed, that behaviour and self-image can get twisted and scary. I do not believe Ethan Hawke is such a person or actor. Peace.
For us who have lived in this real world of having to act to live. And the parts we have chosen I'm glad someone has told our stories. And the depression of being drained to fit in this world and being mature about the seriousness of life. It's a constant death that keep me fighting for answers of why me Lord,of myself I'm nothing.
"You know"
Do you?
Dead Poets Society. What a brilliant film with some brilliant actors.
Great guy, thats what a class act sounds like.
This made me think of Mr. Hawke like he’s a normal person. I suppose they are. But it’s not always apparent.
Love this man so much!
