Sorry for the 2 month hiatus everybody, I had 2 fast track classes throughout June, have been working around 40 hours a week, along with other personal matters and life events that made creating any good content nearly impossible.. Hope y'all can forgive me!
Thomas Fernandez I just made a 2nd one, but these have been my first two attempts at doing character analysis videos. Glad you liked the video, and I'll try to make more in the future! 😁
The Anime Dude why don't you just defend Hitler while you're at it? I'm sure he had his insecurities and reasons to kill thousands of Jewish people. This is so flawed and inexcusable. Just a petty attempt to defend somebody that caused the most pain and suffering to a deaf girl that nearly drives her to suicide and still beats the shit out of her even though she's nearly injured, and doesn't let anyone she Ishida and locks everybody out. She locked herself in the room with ishida and kisses him while he's unconscious and without consent! She's is disgusting, cruel, insecure, crazy, obsessive, psychopathic, sociopathic, and I can go on! So bullying and causing people to suffer is okay, can be justified or excusable if you feel insecurities about liking a boy even if it nearly drives a crippled person to suicide!? Wow! Just wow. It's so disturbing how people find something like her relatable or defendable. I'm sorry but this is just not okay.
That's what I said. That bitch wouldn't let anyone else in the room. She also kissed him without consent since he was unconscious and even said, "if it's not me you choose, then I'd rather you didn't wake up." How is that the slightest understandable or sympathetic? That's just disgusting, selfish and crazy. Basically, she would rather he'd die if he doesn't like her back. That's the same as, "if I can't have you then nobody can." She wasn't there for him like Nishimiya was UNTIL he went into a comatose. She might've been taking care of him but most of all, she was keeping him to herself! Were people assuming Nishimiya didn't care enough to go see him!? We all know she's not that kind of person. We see her try going in, but fucking Ueno makes sure she gets there first before her or anybody and keeps them out. People that claim to be fans of the manga and the movie don't freaking pay attention to one little detail that's not that hard to spot. Gah! How embarrassing.
@@ashebennett7726 Think of it as this way: Ueno keeps a close eye on everyone, especially Nishimiya due to romantic rivalry. Ishida runs off with Nishimiya. Guess what? It nearly got Ishida killed. Ueno allowed (more or less) people to enter Ishida's life and it didn't work out for him. Now, being the alpha female she is, decides to take care of him ALL BY HERSELF AND NO ONE ELSE so nothing will go wrong under her watch. In the hospital, she has all the cards, and no uncontrollable situational factors are going to intervene. Yes, she wished Ishida won't wake up if he doesn't choose her. This ultimately illustrates how desperate and frustrated she is and how she longed for him to reciprocate, but deep down Ueno knows that she fucked up too much for that to happen. If he doesn't wake up, Ueno can shift the blame entirely elsewhere. Maybe Nishimiya, the direct reason for his death. Maybe Ishida's unloyal cronies, who started the counter-bullying. Maybe even Ishida himself, for not choosing Ueno. But aside from all her aggressiveness, deep down inside Ueno is way terrified than anyone and as a result, acts rashly (and often foolishly) to attempt to mend her mistakes and heal the wounds of her loved one. She never backs down...unless Ishida tells her otherwise. And that's why I think she's not the evilest character. In fact, she's the most pitiful one.
@@MrFirehawk007 Let me ask you a question, do you think murderers, rapists and all evil people in the world don't go through such trains of thought? Do you think evil people are some sort of alien force who have nothing to do with humanity and there's nothing in their pasts that explains their behaviour? You just provided the convoluted and self-centered point of view of a girl who's had everything easy in life and has made abusing others and getting away with it an habit. She's a disgusting piece of shit, not deserving any kind of love from anyone.
_Ueno is one of those people who's character development comes in the illusion of showing no change at all. She believes she couldn't ever find herself liking, much less accepting Nishimiya... yet her actions in the end tell us, she is making a conscious effort to try and accept someone. You don't need to like someone to show the respect everyone deserves._
It's a small thing, but one of the last spoken conversations in the movie is between Ueno and Nishimiya. Ueno insults her again but if you pay attention she does it in sign language. That might not seem like a huge thing until you factor in she really hasn't shown she knows any sign language. Which means she probably went out of her way to try to learn it to communicate better. Even if that communication was an insult. It's not much of something, but it is something.
rei FUCKING SLAPPING SOMEONE WHEN THEY SAY SORRY IS NOT “RESPECTING” what is all the bs people are saying trying to defend her and saying they never actually hated her like just because you can explain someone’s thoughts/feelings/actions logically DOES NOT make its justifiable, she DOES have good qualities BUT her bad ones more than OUTWEIGH her good qualities
ueno blames nishimiya for ishida's injuries because she tried to kill herself, I partly believe it was also ueno's fault, I believe she's what pushed nishimiya over the edge.
I think you are largely correct except for why Ueno continued bullying Nishimya after he time skip. She still liked Ishida and when she hopped on the bike, she was flirting with him. Then the first thing she sees is Nishimya across the street with the souvenir from her cat cafe. Ishida then mentions that he gave it to her and Ueno replied "are you dating?". Therefore the reason she bullied her in school and after the time skip is the same, she was her love rival. Ishida was showing more attention to Nishimya than her and that pissed her off.
Regardless of whether she's a likeable character, she is definitely a well written one. It was interesting seeing the dynamic between her and all the characters and her entire story arc. Great analysis man, and bonus points for using a C2 quote! 😊
Ema Iijima ok but like she’s so rude, selfish, and just one of the most annoying characters ever. Y’all can have opinions but just because she’s written well you think she’s the best character. I can list all of the bad things she’s done but I think you know them all. Out of all characters. Y’all like uneo💀 don’t get me started on that blonde chick
@@kenmawhereyouatbabe2165 kawai is a piece of shit and i never really liked her even though she was "redeemed" but sometimes there are parts of ueno that i guess are admirable? not the things she did to nishimiya because that was disgusting, but the fact she stands with her own opinion even if it's not right. Kawai always wanted to appear the victim and make it seem like she was never in the wrong, even when she clearly was. I know that Ueno didn't do the right thing, but at least she had the fact that her opinions and views weren't swayed by others views
I still can't bring myself to forgive her. And if you looked more closely in the manga Ueno only looked after him so she can have him all to herself. You forgot obsessive
Ah yes... This... This is quite accurate... Ueno tried her best to change later.... But of course she couldn't... I don't hate her.... But I couldn't accept her either. I agree with you.
+autobot69000 The fact that she knew how to say moron in sign language at the end hinted that she tried to learn it. That hints that she tried to change, despite still being fairly mean.
I just can't stop hating her. She physically hurt a pure hearted deaf girl multiple times. I've been jealous and angry before but never acted like her. She says shoko ratted them out to the adults when I'm pretty sure it was because her mother noticed all her hearing aids were going missing and questioned her. And who asked her to tend to shoya in the hospital? That's what nurses are for. She had no permission to touch him while he was unconscious it actually creeped me out. And her locking people out of his room? Who the hell is she to decide who can and cannot see him! She hadn't even seen him in years! She is just a horrible person who needs professional help.
Agreed, there is nothing to like or find anything sympathetic with an ignorant, pathetic, rotten, self entitled, cold hearted bitch like Ueno who blames others for her mistakes instead of blaming herself that she was part of the reason Shoko almost ended her life and Shouya ended up in the hospital, never even standing up for him or taking blame for what happened to Shoko. Its people like her who are what is wrong with this world and are the reason people with disabilities are hated, attacked, and ostracized for being born with something they couldn't help being born with. She has no justified reason to hate Shoko in the first place, and is the one who should have never been born into this world, for she never gets any real karma coming to her cruel actions.
@@Disneyfan82 well in the manga she saw that he and shoko created were growing more closer to each other plus she doesn't like the fact that she is smiling constantly as if to be condescending and initially she tried to help her but she found her to be a hindrance. But her reason for hating her is petty no doubt about that.
I still think that she is a jerk because she really had to physically hit Nanashima a million times, including her MOM!! Edit: I meant Nishimiya (stupid auto correct)
Because she is a weak minded, cold hearted coward who always finds ways to justify her petty prejudice against disabled people and have the nerve to tells Shoko's mother to stop breeding, when its Ueno's kind that should stop breeding ignoramuses like herself.
@@Disneyfan82 why do people keep saying she is prejudiced against disabled people, she only hated shoko that's it, and her hatred stems from the mob mentality of the class during their time in school which prior to that she actually tried to cope with her and the fact that the bully was getting close with her and increased her jealousy.
@@lampad4549 Well whatever the hell it is, Ueno still acts like she did nothing wrong and continues taking no responsibility for her ignorant, petty jealousy and acts prejudiced against disabled people when she told Shoko's mother to stop breeding. She deserves a major nosebleed and a brutal beating for that.
she is jealous, but still, doing all of that because of the jealousy she's feeling is an act of a true bitch. tho am glad she's in the movie, she's a well written character and that's the fact
You certainly opened my eyes to a couple things/traits I didn't catch, I imagine reading the manga probably helps bring more light to that.. But never the less great video, was worth the wait :D
Yes reading the manga explains everything, the movie is shit in comparison, i like the movie but fucking hell it's no where near as amazing as the manga.
It's so easy to dislike and misunderstand Ueno, you really have to read between the lines to find her redeeming qualities. Good video, I can't bring myself to like her personally but I appreciate her character more now, flawed though it may be.
oreomonogatari I'm not misunderstanding her. I'm just not going to excuse her. Appreciating a brutal, merciless bitch of a bully like her is like appreciating sharks for having no taste for human even though they will still bite you to figure out what you are. Ueno is NOT the victim here. I've read the manga and all I got from it was she is selfish, bratty, immature, entitled, narcissistic (not Kawai narcissistic but still narcissistic), psychopathic, sociopathic, ruthless, merciless, obsessive, hateful, bitchy, disgusting, pushy, angry, and I can go on. Not to mention playing victim while, hypocritically, telling Nishimiya that she doesn't get it or understand. She is just getting in the way of Shouko and Shouya's relationship, healing process, and happiness. She needs to f***ing back off! If she likes Ishida, she would back off and allow him to be happy even if it's not with her since he suffered too. She wasn't there for him like Nishimiya and the others were until he goes into a comatose. She's a mild yandere and is scared to lose to a deaf girl. How pathetic can she be? And what does she do? Talks her into committing suicide! Even if that was unintentional it was still her fault. Instead of taking some responsibility, she beats the shit out of the already injured Shouko and said it should've been her when Ishida ending up in comatose. She couldn't accept the fact that Ishida chose to save Nishimiya. It was his decision. He didn't have to but he did because he cares a lot about Nishimiya. Then Ueno wouldn't let Nishimiya or anyone else in the room to see Ishida, locking herself in there, proceeds with kissing him without consent while he's unconscious and rather he didn't wake up if he doesn't chose her. That's psychotically obsessive and selfish, not to mention down-right disgusting. She's as ugly on the inside as she is on the outside. She doesn't have to like Nishimiya, but she should at least back off and leave them the hell alone! I don't care if she's like helga pataki with parents that abuse her and neglect her, her actions, her behavior and reasonings are still inexcusable. She is at the age where she should know better by now. I feel bad for Nishimiya, NOT Ueno. Nishimiya has been through too much but still smiles and holds no ill will towards any bully and still knows how to love and forgive. What's Ueno's excuse? She hasn't been put through as much as Nishimiya and still acts the way she does and can't move on. Bless Nishimiya's kind heart. She's so endearing. That poor girl apologizes for things that aren't her fault because she feels like she burdens people due to her handicap which is also not her fault. I don't make excuses for assholes because you can't stick a flower in an anus and call it a vase.
+ashe benett Cheers. Ueno is a bitch, and the story should have ended with the MC acknowledging her bitchiness, which is what cause the big blue X to fall off. Like it's the MC realizing that in life, there's gonna have to be bitches, and you're going to have to deal with them, you can't just tune them out.
theblasblas I agree. I don't get how she redeemed herself. By learning one word in sign language? Pfft! She didn't even get it right. I wanted her to apologize and tell Nishimiya to take care of Ishida as a redemption of character development. I wanted her to be punished first.
@Daichi Zken' All approaches are subjective. You believe in equality, in which everyone should follow a set of laws and should be rewarded/punished accordingly. I put my money in equity, in which individuals are given different types and degrees of support to become a better self. As I said in other comments, every villain thinks they are the hero of his/her story. Punishing Ueno to whatever you deem acceptable is the most direct route, if not revengeful. We saw what happened to Ishida; Ueno will likely end up like him if she was "punished." Yet, there are many more ways to let her recognize herself and change her personality. Why let her go through Hell when could redeem herself here and now? Punish her you will, but there is a possibility that Ueno still considers herself one of the "good guys" and you are the "evil oppressors." Whoops, she gets even more twisted and violent. Now, should we just punish her more? At this point, maybe put her down? The reason why Ueno is like that because she hates who she is but is so insecure that she has to point her frustration outward. After her outburst, she realizes what she has done and becomes more frustrated, (see manga: "You've should've stopped me") and down the spiral we go. She's already suffering for her crimes; her inner guilt and frustration is eating her up. But hey, as you said, that's my perspective as a juvenile educator. This "soft" method obviously doesn't work when you're dealing with a CROWD of Uenos; we then bring out the law to put them on a leash because we don't have time or budget to assign shrinks to every one of them. TL;DR: What you're proposing is EQUALITY with the main objective to demonstrate what is right and wrong to the public. I'm for EQUITY, helping individuals in a minimal-risk way which is sometimes unpopular to public opinion. Glad to see we're having a healthy discussion!!! :)))
For some of yall firing off at each other for liking/disliking Ueno... you do realize there's a difference between liking a character and liking the way a character is written, right? While I do not condone bullying (like all of you here) nor would I want someone like Ueno as a friend if given the option, I see her as a very well-written and complex individual with incredibly realistic flaws and developments. As such, she is one of my favorite characters in this movie/manga. That's the difference. Learn to differentiate before spreading senseless hate. Thanks for making this video, The Anime Dude! You hit all the key points of Ueno's character. Looking forward to watching the rest of this video series now.
Natlie Lee here’s the thing, we usually “like” or “hate” the character not because the character is poor-written, mostly it’s because how well the author writing/analysis the characters, I mostly don’t like her character, but all of the characters personality in the manga/film are well written, relatable, make sense, and just perfection.
Very rational. Because of this comment, I think I do like Ueno as a well-written character, not as a person. Me, liking her as a person is more of a gray-ish area.
Most of the people here cant comprehend simple english but finally i found a sensible and reasonable comment here thank effing god, Those guys who just hate this video because they cant understand a simple thing like that doesnt deserve to watch the movie tbh Thank you random guy on the internet
Sadly, I see Ueno as a character who was never told she did wrong, and so she thought what she was doing was ok. So she is the opposite extreme of what Shoya became. He was shamed for his bullying so he became a social recluse and tried to change. While Ueno was never told what she did was wrong and so it continued.
Eroid,yes..She only really cared about Shouya when beating up Shouko outside of the hospital, she thought that Shouko is the reason that Shouya fallen, she can't change the feeling of hatred towards Shouko, which i can understand, but c'mon, who doesn't like Shouko!
How does Kawaii happen to be a more bitch-like entity then Ueno,i dunno if im crystal clar, she did happen to e a nice person at the end and made up with Nishimiya, unlike Ueno who forced her to suicide...did i miss anything?
@@HonestFarmerLigue1Fan they didn't say relatable, they said realistic. Did you really just attack someone because they said a character was realistic?
@@amazingjay3957 not in the sense of realistic though. Who the hell beats disabled people other than deranged person? To me, there is no realeast character here. All people here, we spot them in real life.
No one is realistic accept the guy who was called out goody two shoes, shoya's friend(When he had grown up),Sahara and shoya himself.Shoko isn't realistic because she kept apologizing even when it wasn't her fault
Hudson Ball Hey, as long as you understand someone then how you feel about them is all up to you. 💯 Can't say I even blame you, I'm just glad you watched the video. 😊 Hope you liked it, even if you don't like Ueno. 😁
What I can't stand about her is that she keeps acting like a bitch even though she knows how despicable she is and tries to "change." If you want to change then fist thing to do is stop acting like a bitch.
Very insightful. Interresting take on Ueno character. I felt like her character was like the embodiment of the self-hatred felt by Ishida and Nishimiya. Almost like giving that self-hatred a voice to direct it onto the main characters. I can't say I liked her, but I don't think I was supposed to
It gets even worse. In the manga, the teacher apparently hated Shoko as well. I don't know the details, but I think having a deaf girl in his class was annoying to him. He was all too happy to see her leave and blame the entire situation on Ishida bullying her outside of school and his supervision, so he couldn't be blamed for not doing anything about the bullying.
@@akhandtripathipyz9888 i think the teacher is partly to blame why the bullying kept progressing for shoko, he basically watched as shoko was continuously treated badly by her classmates, and didn’t do a single thing about it. although he did out shoya later on in front of the class, I don’t think that makes him a better person, he definitely could’ve stepped in and helped but he didn’t, and a teacher’s role is so prevent bullying and he failed to do that
@@bunnymabs He failed miserably but to be fair he talked with Shoya a few times and asked him to stop and talk with Shoko if he was curious about her condition. He at least accepted that Shoya grew to be a fine young man and didn't reveal his past to his new friend when they visited their old school in manga unlike Kawai and the other kids. I think he wasn't qualified to deal with a kid with special needs. It was kinda Shoko's mother's fault to force her daughter into regular class and activities just to make her strong.
this is late but i think the movie indicates her potential for redemption when she learns how to say moron in sign. and again, its redemption in her own way.
I personally do not like Ueno one bit, she is the real burden, she only stayed in that hospital room everyday is to show how much she "cared" for Shouya. If he didn't love her, she wouldn't really care if he died at the point. I hate her, she is too full of herself despite of what you said.
The problem with Ueno is that she never really atoned for everything she did to Shoko. She basically gets scot free at the end. She doesn't even apologize if I remember correctly. You said that she and Shoko handle their situations differently. That's true, but the difference is that Shoko never blamed anyone for her problems while Ueno was always blaming others (specially Shoko) despite the fact Shoko didn't really do anything wrong to her or Ishida. That makes her quite a shitty person in my book.
Yeah you got a point but maybe you forget to mention that she also admits that she is also responsible in nishimya bullying in sixth grade and it wasn't all on ishida in the bridge scene when kawaii didn't , and says that she knows she is a bad person to ishida when he returend home after his coma , so she admits it unlike kawaii (which is important in case she wanted a redemption because no one can have a redemption unless he admits his faults) , but she knows that everything went wrong not just because of her so she doesn't know who to blame then she blames kawaii for laughing and go alojg with it (which kinda true kawaii also has a responsiblity on what happend back then , what she did in high school is worse but different topic) she blames nishimiya for snitching to adults (which is false) she wants to fix things for ishida but in very stupid way . Like if she knows what she was doing she will know that the most responsible one for everything is the teacher (which is the worst charctar in story and if there is a villan it will be him , and by the way he is way worse in the manga than the movie) , while what left of the responsiblity are divide to ishida (who did what he could to make up for it) and the rest who laughed and go along with it (includes uenu who admited it and kawaii who didn't) in the end when she calls nishimya stuped using signs (she tried to learn sign language for nishimya but tries to act she didn't care ) so she had some sort of regret , and it's not as much as improvment as the one ishida had but still something better than nothing and to be fair she didn't get bullied unlike ishida which was a major reason for his redemption , and they cutted in the movie alot of her arc which make you thinks if you watched it you may feel like she isn't like a sadistic person who enjoys seeing others suffer but more like very stupied with a big mass of conflicting emotions , so she isn't a total bad person with pure black heart nor an angel , she is trying to change maybe at her pace which realistic to her charactar because it's not expected for someone like her to come the next day apologising for everything and acts the nicest way towards nishimya but she tries About nishimya not blaming anyone that is not a good thing either she is blaming onlyherself herself to unhealthy degree ( which is the total opposite of kawaii ) , and that mostly because how kids thinks mostly those of disabilty who being bullied ask themselfs why it is always me and not anyone else ? So i must be the reason for that . Another reason is because she saw herself as the reason for her parents' divorce , so this goes with her as she gets older the self blaming for everything , this why there are lectures how to handle kids with disabilty tells you don't tell them there is no problem with you at all because they will see how others reacts to them which will make them thinks you are laying etc... .
@@ahmedabdullah6779 Doing something unhealthy and doing something wrong are totally different things. Besides, Shoko blames herself because she has low self-esteem, which is normal from people with disabilities, and no one tells her "girl, none of this is your fault." All the opposite, people around her blame her for things she didn't do. This movie basically pushes victim blaming as a valid way of dealing with people disabilities, which is a whole lot of bullshit. This movie doesn't have a positive message for people with disabilities. In fact, I argue people with disabilities should avoid this movie like the plague. The last thing you want is someone with disabilities to feel they have to apologize for having a disability or for making people "uncomfortable." In any case, none of what you said invalidates my point on Ueno.
@@1idd0kun what nishimya doing is both wrong and unhealthy while this is isn't meant to be a way to say nishimiya are like ueno but still this way of thinking are wrong because it will enventually leads you to sucide thought atleast , or to make you commit it which is wrong in about your self and those who are love you , if nishimya knew how sad her family and ishida will be if she did commit sucide she wouldn't , she thought they would be happier if she is gone Plus not everyone blames nishimya in the movie most of the charactar don't , she thinks they are being nice to her which is i explaind why she has this mindset in my earlier comment About the movie and it is not good it is up to you of course how good you sees it but i think you misunderstood the point of the movie it is not about victim blaming it's about ishida who learns with nishimya how to forgive themselves . And about what i said and how it invalidets your point on ueno , your point that she is a sh** person in your book this an opinon not a point , if you meant your "points" then it weren't meant to invalidets your points about her it was about looking a diffrenet angle at the things this why i said you got a point in my first comment but when it come ti discuss the points not all your points are correct That she never atoned is not entirly correct , she had a redemption and not as ishida but it still consider a redemption , so if you didn't find acceptable that understandble but doesn't change the fact that she had a redembtion And about always blaming the others it gives a false assumption that she don't blame herself and blames other falsely just because it is a way of running out of responpility , while that is not true she blames herself as well , and the only one she is wrong about every blame , while blaming nishimya is wrong but blaming herself and kawaii and the rest of the class is right
@@1idd0kun i wrote my replay before you edit your comment in case my reply seemed a bit odd , plus none of this is your fault i was talking in general not about a scene Plus what conversation happend between her mother or grandmother or sister etc... about how none of it is her fault doesn't have to be in the movie she wouldn't ask them everytime she knows what they will say but is she beliveing them or not , and about people blame her i explaind it in my previous comment plus she tells ishida if he stayed with her he will be misrable he replied that is not true so it is not true that every one blames her . Plus about the victim blame in the movie this is a feeling nishimiya feels when she sees ishida hurt because of his past which she thinks she is the main factor in it , and ignoring the problem doesn't make it vanish this is something alot of people feels it not just the one with disabilites so the movie shows the problem and how hurt her family were when she almost lost her when she thought everyone will be happier without her , and the boy who she "thinks" hurt the most by her how he was determined to save her and how mich she meant to him , by the end this girl who is deaf and used to blame herself fully for everything taught the one who bullied her how to forgive and love himself
@@ahmedabdullah6779 "he replied that is not true so it is not true that every one blames her" That is not the same as telling her that she's not at fault. No one tells her this in the movie (or the manga). In fact, if at least one person told her this, the story would have been considerably better, because without this, the story is validating the victim-blaming that several characters (like Ueno) inflict on her. "Plus about the victim blame in the movie this is a feeling nishimiya feels" No that's not what victim-blaming means. Shoko of course blames herself, but that's a separate issue. Victim-blaming is when other people blames her for things she didn't do. Several characters do this in the movie, like Ueno for example. And the movie is problematic because it doesn't offer a counter-point. Meaning, there are people blaming Shoko but there is no one telling her the opposite, that she's not to blame, that none of this is her fault. By not having a counter-point the movie validates the victim-blaming and this is why people with disabilities should not watch this movie. In fact, this is the main criticism on this movie from people with disabilities. This and the fact that Ueno never truly apologies to Shoko.
Cool vid. Personally I prefer movie Ueno over manga Ueno. One of the manga's biggest flaws, in my opinion, was how exaggerated all the characters were. Even the sign language was exaggerated. The movie brings it down to a really realistic level, including Ueno's character. Instead of burning jealousy and anger that could rival a certain greek goddess, she's toned down into a more realistic sense of bluntness and directness while simultaneously not directly confronting her own feelings, and the movie never tells you this. You have to piece it together from the obvious signs as if she was an actual person, which also ties into the movie's theme of communication.
After watching some scenes i agree that the presentation of her character makes her seem more realistic but her base characterization is actually the same.
Very interesting analysis. I still despise Ueno with a passion and think all the hate towards her is warranted. But it's always interesting to hear other people's takes on characters and get a better understanding of them. Any way, awesome job 👍🏽
Arfi Thanks, I find it fascinating how all the opinions this video has gotten on her are on completely different spectrums. Haha. Anyways, I'm just glad you enjoyed the video! 😁👍🏻
Arfi I like Ueno, she's my favorite character, Fight me! She's prettier, and smarter than nishimiya. You can't blame her for not trying to fake friendship with nishimiya, I find her being so direct with what she thinks more admirable than fake smiles and victimizing oneself. What I wanna say is, directing hate at best girl is NOT acceptable. Your taste is shit and I'm the only objective opinion in anime, my words are backed by divine knowledge and yours are invalid.
@Majikarp Arceus There is no wrong opinion . The producers said it's about how all people are flawed but they try to make up and continue living . You didn't understand anything
@Majikarp Arceus and in Japanese culture and other cultures honesty is the most important virtue . It's a small thing sometimes they add in anime and usually the straightforward, sometimes childish guys and girls are the heroes if you noticed .
Great job, bro! When I heard Ueno visited the hospital frequently during the movie that really changed my perspective on her and it seems like she gets even more characterization in the manga. I'll have to read it! P.s. I appreciated that apt CC quote very much -Gozen
yes she was kind for visiting the hospital but mind you she locked everyone out and kissed shoya without his consent. and then told him if he didn’t choose her she’d rather him not wake up. it’s selfish.
Ueno is a terrible person but she's a redeemable & understandable, probably quite relatable to some people. She's at least pretty honest straightforward & probably the only one that face Shoko head on without any "masks." She know she's a terrible person & she still honest of her hate towards Shoko which for a very obvious reason (jealousy & having a long time crush on Shoya).
The characters of Koe no Katachi is one of the most hardest, mainly because of their strong realism and also due to the topic at hand(bullying, suicide, etc), to analyse and this is one of the best channels Ive seen so far tackling the characters in such an indepth and reasonal way. Your Kawai character analysis was great stuff. Keep it up!
It definitely had more time to flesh out the side characters, whereas the movie primarily focused on Ishida & Nishimiya, and even they're a lot more in depth in the manga. Definitely a good read, I recommend it! Haha.
The amount people missing the point of a character analysis in the comment section is mind boggling, who cares if she is a sympathetic or good person, who cares if she is likable , being likable , sympathetic and good are overrated qualities to character writing, the fact that she commits all these selfish acts and having understandable characterization and motivation to do so is exactly what makes her so well crafted and well written.
I agree but I like the antiheroes that have a moral compass because as much as I love a well written character she is still at fault and that is why I hate how relatable she is because she gets it of easier than society would usually let because it's always interesting when someone with conflicting ideals is put in a position where they have to question why they do what they do and how they plan ahead for it because karma hates everyone even those who dont deserve In summary I respect her character and I dont hate her and she is flawed (which is the point of it all) i'm still salty that she hit shoko and we didn't get the chance to see her apologize and change to my animen cliche of the moral high ground Danm I wrote a lot
My god, somebody finally said it. Someone doesn't have to be good to be likable, atleast in fiction. I find Ueno more of a gray-ish character though. Even so, I don't believe that characters are even supposed to be 'good' or 'redeeming' for them to be a great character.
Who cares if she's "well written"? If I don't like her because of her character, then that's all I care about, I couldn't give a fuck about her analysis. The only people who try to justify her are shitty people irl.
I always liked her. She somehow feels like a very real character. There was times i felt disgusted by her actions but she is how a real tsundere would behave in the real world.
Uh... no not really. Her character feels more real than the others. She is a bitch? Yes and... no? She doesnt do it cuz she is feeling like it. It just the interactions. And she miss the old time... and ended up blaming the deaf girl
i think ueno is one of the most unappreciated characters in the whole series, yes i have despised her for falling under peer pressure to bully shouko, but that literally applies to all her friends including shoya himself i reference this anime heavily to my real life which is why i relate to those characters so much ( or atleast i want to feel like) and honestly ueno is the kind of person i will never let go seeing how people in real life go to the extent to cover up their past mistakes to not let down their pride. Ueno strikes me as a loyal friend in times where she let shoya down she tries her best to make up for it when they grew up, i personally find that very admirable, on and all she wants to change. and it takes courage and a lot of it to come back from the fall that she had to face shoya once again in conclusion, everyone makes mistakes but not everyone faces them up heads on, ueno suppresses her true feelings towards shouko when they meet again after middle school because she wants to do the right thing. Just imagine you having to say that "i was wrong ", killing your past ego and letting people see that flaw in you is just something i feel like shouldnt be overlooked especially because she didnt need to. in the end, this is why i think she is a very good person in heart.
She only said "I was wrong" and had regrets about abandoning Shoya. She never regretted or repented her treatment of Shoko, the REAL think that destroyed their social group. In fact, she continued to blame Shoko for the audacity of existing, rather than take responsibility for her and Shoya's roles in their unwarranted bullying.
Ueno also hated nishimiya because she never showed her true emotions to her or others, always smiling and hiding her discomfort. Nishimiya was fake with everybody around her even after the timeskip. Nishimiya made a barrier around herself to prevent others to see her sorrow and this made it impossible for ueno to sympathize with her.
Marburg Ueno is not a victim. Nishimiya wasn't being fake. She was kind, misunderstood, diligent and always made an effort in being as helpful and friendly as possible. Despite all the suffering and pain people put her through she still shows no ill-will towards them. That's probably what those "fake" smiles are for and it is rather endearing. She obviously has unconditional love for Ishida despite what he did to her. But, Nishimiya was able to move on from that and forgive him as well as love him. She doesn't even hold any ill-will towards Ueno no matter how much she caused Nishimiya to suffer physically and emotionally to the breaking point that nearly caused her to take her own life! I don't get it but bless Nishimiya's kind heart. Why do people defend an aggressive, selfish, childish, tsundere, borderline-yandere, non-empathetic, discriminating, bitchy, cruel, psychotic, sociopathic, sadistic, self-centered, prejudice bully like Ueno instead of the sweet, kind, caring, forgiving, helpful, endearing, non discriminating, soft-hearted, friendly deaf Angel such as Nishimiya? You and these other people need help.
ashe bennett obviously Nishimiya did nothing wrong. Saying otherwise would be victim blaming. But she internalized all of her emotions. She didn't understand why people were so cruel to her so she blamed herself and thought she would be better off dead. She got to the point she felt so worthless she couldn't tell anyone about her suicidal thoughts. That isn't healthy. Ueno's point was that she shouldn't have so much self hatred and instead should hate the people that treated her badly. Nishimiya couldn't do that though which in return, someone selfish like Ueno could not understand her and lacked empathy for her. Miscommunication is a key theme in this manga. Ueno and Nishimiya have a ton of self loathing for themselves but for all the wrong reasons, Ueno because she's an awful person and Nishimiya because she believes she is awful when she isn't. That is probably why it was frustrating for Ueno to watch. Again not defending nor justifying Ueno's actions and she certainly isn't a victim but just giving insight into their characters.
She couldnt tell anybody because NO ONE WANTED TO HEAR IT! Ueno beats her up while calling herself a seld centred victim and youre saying nishi shouldve done exactly that?
That's a good analysis you got. I guess that's why I found it frustrating that Ueno telling Nishimiya that she doesn't get it because I found that hypocritical. She couldn't understand anything herself. Not going to lie though, I might have felt just a tad frustrated when Nishimiya was being too nice to the petty characters, especially Ueno, but I love her for it regardless. Ueno is the one I felt most frustrated with though. I just wanted her to back off and allow Ishida to heal and be happy even if it's with Nishimiya instead of her. But Ueno just wasn't going to have any of that. I know she wants Ishida to be happy with her (Ueno), but she just couldn't accept that and wanted to win him over by attacking the girl he already likes. She's also desperate. Also, the fact that she said she'd rather Ishida didn't wake up if he doesn't choose her, that sounded pretty damn selfish and insane. Like she has that much obsession with Ishida. That's kind of how yanderes sound like, "if I can't have you, then nobody can!" Lol. But I think another reason Nishimiya didn't show her true feelings is because it would make her a bigger target for bullying, wouldn't it? And she's already had it bad enough. Even though Ueno can't understand Nishimiya that still doesn't excuse her brutal actions towards a deaf girl. It's just so pathetic of her to feel insecure about losing Ishida to a deaf girl and sees Nishimiya as a rival that she thinks she can justify her own actions the way she does. Nishimiya already blames everything on herself, and Ueno just adds more blame on Nishimiya because she doesn't want to take any responsibility for her own insecurity. I can agree with you though.
Thing is why would she show her true emotions when she got treated like that? She was scared and thinks she would probably make everything worse. Its in Nishimiya’s personality to be nice with everyone and she never tried to confront anyone other than Ishida (because they were also bullying him). Thing is even after so many years when Ueno sees her the first thing she is about to do is bullying her...like for real? Does she still have the brain of a 12 years old kid or what? Thats so immature...not to mention she physically abused her while she was injured after the suicide attempt. She just didnt want to admit that she is a jealous bitch who wanted Ishida’s attention. She didn’t even let Nishimiya enter Ishida’s room in the hospital... That being said i have not read the whole manga so i might have missed some details about Ueno’s character but i still dont think i will like her. Well in the end of the movie you could see her change a little for the better atleast...
Great points. Ueno is a complex character, but I just can't help but rebuttal that being straightforward is great; very refreshing even. But I can't forgive her stubbornness to still be an asshole. Empathy. She needs it. Ishida learned it, Ueno didn't. And that's fine I guess, but the world needs less Uenos in the empathy department. We need her bluntness tho.
One thing that hurt Ueno was how she acted when she met Shoya and Shoko again. When she takes Shoko's hearing aid and tries to use it to encourage Shoya to act like his old self, it not only made her seem incredibly immature, but also seemed like she preferred the immature Shoya over the one trying to mature. It is interesting that, in the manga, she does seem to have a prickly friendship with Shoko at the conclusion of the story.
She never loved shouko. She tried to help her at first but then she began to fear that her usual life would change and she did not want that so she bullied her not just that but it was also because she wanted ishida's attention but for me the most important thing was that she thought shouko loved ishida and euno did not want to lose him after years went by she realized that ishida has changed she started worrying he was not his confident self anymore and she blamed it on shouko just liked she blames everything on her. In that scene she also blamed her for the situation he was in do not forget the fact that she stayed with him in his room every single day from morning to night she was worried and she was not in a good mental state and she also blamed it on shouko but she was so upset that she didn't just yell but harrassed her physically now comes a little bit of my own thoughts in the firework scene she was shown with an old man who is her grandpa anher siblings considering that her parents were not there and her violent behaviour and came to the conclusion that her parents probably abused her physically and mentally and that is the reason she does not live with her parents and she is abusive she basically showed her anger by abusing shouko just like her parents showed their anger by abusing herself it is not that hard to understand that she is actually very broken like Ishida and Shouko but she finds it pathetic to showweakness and keeps her cold altitude on and targets shouko for being weak. At the end of the story she begins to change and go through character development. This is not to justify her actions but to explain her actions. Abuse cannot be justified but it can be explained and I decided to explain that since it bugs me that people love Ishida but hate Naoko even though they both made huge mistakes.
ImagineBreaker Thanks! 😁😊 & I agree, that's what makes this movie so great, they're all just people trying to understand one another! Glad you like the videos! 😁😊
Great video on Ueno, I think you described her personality, flaws, and attempts at redemption quite well. Alas, just like Ueno can't accept Nishimiya, I can't accept her.:-( Well, her reaction to Nishimiya finally calling her stupid was funny though, I can give her that.
When I first read the manga, I had a lot of mixed feelings about her but I disliked her more. She's a terrifically written character for sure. After watching the movie a couple of times and then re-reading the manga, I concluded that I did actually like her. She went about plenty of things the wrong way, but she wasn't actually a bad person. She, like the others who are also kids, are still learning and growing. She's aware of the kind of person she is, but she can't help lashing out when she's angry even though she doesn't want to. At the hospital, when she was hitting Shouko, afterwards, she was crying and saying "Is this the only way I can be satisfied? Is if I hit her?" Mostly, she was upset at Shouko for Shouya being in a coma, but she was also angry with her for trying to kill herself. This is where the narrative and explanation of it get seriously tricky, so just bear with me. On the bridge, when Shouya just bunches in on himself and dejectedly says that it's his fault, Ueno says "I hate that kind of logic," which could mean that she hates when people blame themselves, maybe she hates seeing that trait in other people (?). So when Shouko tried to kill herself, she was also angry about that because it's honestly a selfish act. You're not thinking about anyone but yourself when you make that decision. (Please don't come for me about that, I've made that decision before and that's what I've personally discovered). And that was clear to tell in Shouko's case as she stands there silently as her mom and little sister cry while taking down those photos, that she understands finally that she would've hurt them as well. I can understand Ueno's frustration with Shouko, I really can. After a few times throughout watching the movie and reading the manga, she's frustrated me as well. Because she wasn't entirely honest. She was honest during that physical fight with Shouya in elementary and finally at the end. Now, I definitely understand being afraid to express how you really feel to people who are treating you horribly, but she also hid it from her family. She only told Yuzuru once that she wanted to die and that's what prompted her to start taking photos of dead animals, but she clearly didn't open up any more than that. She built a wall around herself with her peers and with her family. And I'm well aware it's because she didn't want to "burden" them, but really, her holding it back was the actual problem. And I get that. You want to protect people, don't want them to feel sad or guilty or anything, but that's not the way to go. Because she held it all back, she made the decision to kill herself, resulting in Shouya being hospitalized and her mom and Yuzuru feeling helpless and guilty and ashamed for not doing more. But they couldn't have done any more than what they'd already done because you can't force someone to be honest with you. But enough about Shouko for now. Ueno did and said some horrible things, that's for sure. She locked Shouko out of Shouya's room for a selfish reason, that first time. Personally, I don't think Shouko tried to go in again after that, instead she decided to get all their friends together to finish their movie (in the manga) for Shouya. Even Shouya's mom didn't want to see Shouko for a while. That was something the movie changed. Almost immediately, Shouko tried to apologize to his mom, but she walked around her and she said didn't want to talk to her/see her for now. I think that's the reason we only see Shouko standing outside of the hospital but never inside it after that first time. It wasn't fully because of Ueno. Now, that scene where she was thinking to Shouya that if he didn't/couldn't love her that he shouldn't wake up, I think that's something that shouldn't be judged too harshly. Is it horrible to say? Definitely. Thinking though? That's something different. In your thoughts, it's just you. You can think whatever you want without the judgement (maybe only the shame though) of others. You can think whatever horrible things you want and not say them. The moment you say them, it becomes real. Does this mean I think horrible things about others all the time? No. It's just an observation. Ueno loves Shouya, but first loves are always... really messy and heartbreaking. You're learning more about those kinds of emotions with not much guidance to go on and it seems Ueno's mom wasn't in the picture, so it wasn't like she could go to her dad. Dealing with jealousy is difficult, it stems from insecurity. And that's what Ueno was. She was insecure. Shouko's this adorable girl who came into their lives and everyone was excited to be around her until it got too hard. And I also think she had difficulty reading, so when Shouko got praise from their jerk teacher, that jealousy grew even more. One of the things I did end up admiring Ueno for was that despite how toxic her love for Shouya was throughout most of the movie and manga, she still let him go. She wanted him to be happy, even if it wasn't with her. To me, this signified her growth in an apparent way. Ueno made a lot of mistakes, definitely, but she did, at the very least, start to grow at the end of the movie. She learned a bit of sign language which meant she was finally opening that door between her and Shouko since she didn't try when she was younger. She apologized to Shouya about everything when he came home from the hospital, and, from what I remember, her and Shouko actually do becoming good friends after moving to Tokyo. The whole point of this manga/movie is the art of forgiveness. Whether it's forgiving others or yourself or both, it's extremely powerful. It's about second chances. About making mistakes as a kid and teenager, some way worse than others. It's about being human and acknowledging those ugly sides. It's about redeeming yourself, especially when you can see that you were incredibly wrong. Ueno is a tough character to like, but I do like her. Because, despite everything, we do see her start to try. And that's enough. She didn't deny bullying Shouko (after that first time) and hating her and she didn't deny standing by and watching as they all bullied Shouya. She started to change for the better, and that's what matters. Hold people accountable for their actions and educate them on why that kind of mindset is wrong and let them grow. Constantly reminding people of who they used to be when they're beginning to change or aren't that person anymore is absolutely toxic. No one in this story was completely innocent, but they changed/started to change and that's definitely what matters most. They were finally all doing good at one point, especially the end which is really the start of their actual journey. This got so very long (and I honestly have more to say)! Sorry about that. I've been watching the movie and reading the manga and constantly analyzing it since the manga beginning its English translation, so I hold it very dear to me. One character I can't really bring myself to like to Kawai Miki. The deniability is what pushes me away from liking her. Anyways, if you've read all of this, thanks! If you disagree and don't like Ueno and feel the need to tell me, then reply but please practice what you preach and do so in a kind manner :) I'm sorry if there are any typos, sometimes I miss them when I'm reading back over. Thanks for reading!
In my opinion, Ueno itself already suffers from a horrible feeling inside. It reminds me a lot of people who have passive-aggressive personality disorder where the bearer (who is also the abuser) ends up removing a situation or event in which the victim (according to the abuser) is guilty for her personal problems and therefore needs to be punished in some way. Usually these attacks happen in an indirect way through sarcastic or malicious comments (like the ones Ueno made with Nishimya and Ishida). Often these individuals are influenced by frustrations triggered by bad events in their lives such as Ishida preferring to stay with Nishimya even though Ueno clearly showed signs that she liked him (such as when she took his side while in a coma) or when Ueno was somehow punished by being excluded from her group of childhood friends along with Ishida for bullyng against Nishimiya. Although she knows that Nishimiya is not at all to blame for the bad events caused in her life (and many caused by her own actions) Ueno is unable to face her lamentations head on and prefers to play not only the blame for her actions on other people but also to reflect her moral defects on them, an example of this is when she physically assaults Nishimiya in hospital while saying "That she is a selfish and manipulative person, and that these are the kinds of people she is most angry at". This would be a way for Ueno to reflect defects that she herself has in other people, and in doing so, she feels a brief sense of relief for taking all the weight off her back, but then is consumed by excesses of guilt to the point of admitting at the end of the film that she was a horrible person, because despite everything that happened, she still can't like Nishimiya. In my opinion, what makes Ueno such a despicable character is the fact that she can't suppress her cowardice and take responsibility for her actions, and if she had the conscience and good sense to do it, she would be a much better person.
@@joaopedroaraujo5990 that’s a great observation! Her character is truly easy to hate and hard to love, but that’s what makes her a great character. She’s so well written. It took me a couple of reads of the manga to see another side of her; it was difficult to read without bias but once I did that, it was easy to see her layers and start to like her. The movie doesn’t do her character justice; it just paints her as the bad guy, when there really isn’t one. Part of human nature is needing/wanting someone to blame for things, even if they’re completely innocent. Ueno blamed Shouko for everything, but she also didn’t shy away from the fact that she doesn’t like her. A lot of people get some things mixed up on WHY she doesn’t like her. It was the same reason Shouya was so angry with her as a kid. She never expressed how she actually felt, she never tried to get to know the others in class as well. She just smiled all the time instead of expressing anything. So when Shouya got hurt, it was easy to blame Shouko and be angry with her. Ueno didn’t want to be the way she was. She was crying with guilt and disgust at her own behavior, and that’s when we see the change. It doesn’t show you any conversation between Shouko and Ueno in the movie or the manga, but I do think it happened. I personally see the change in Ueno’s character by the end. She was beginning to learn sign language, scolding Shouko every time she apologized so she could break that habit, and they became good friends. The beauty of this story is that it’s about redemption. Liking the characters doesn’t matter so much as them growing does, if that makes sense. They’re all complex and everyone will read them differently. Your view of her is very interesting though! I enjoyed reading your comment. I meant to answer back when I first got it but my notifications cleared so I forgot; sorry about that!
Oh yes, finally someone who sees the broader perspective of ueno, I have been explaining to others about the misconceptions of her but many just don't think through what I've said. It's really glad to see you make such a great video to allow others to see a different perspective of ueno, thank you so much for sharing your view.
Just cause she has 'special' opinions doesn't 'innocentify' her for her actions. Seriously, people who pick on the bully are very unprofessional and in-humane. Sure Ishida was in the run as well but he has started through the path of redemption, but this bitch knows no quit, her brain didnt mature at all since then, i even wonder why people are trying to 'understand' her action, you cant understand why a dick is a dick to everyone..Also i cant believe that they(Shimada,Hirose) happened to be the good guys just for saving Ishida. They still have a habit of looking down on people for instance that time Ishida met Shimada and shimadas like 'Dont try to get along with those losers.' like WTF
It seems you are not paying attention to the movie closely. Theme of the movie is change. Ishida and hirose are tailing ishida probably because they want to make ammends with ishida for what they did in 6th grade. Sure Ueno is a bitch but she is trying to change keyword here is trying. Self change dont come in an instant what you do and what you want to do is two different thing and often times people do the wrong by impulse because its what they did for so long. Ishida started his path of redemption after he got bullied and it still takes him a long time to be able to confront his problem. Now give the same opportunity to Ueno, Shimida and others who have just realised their wrong doings.
If Ueno actually faced consequences for what she did, I would like her more if some at least beat her up or something because I hate how this series forgives people so easily.
That was wonderful! I'm so glad someone delved into ueno's deep and complex character and gave her the understanding she deserves. She's a character that gets a lot of hate and i can understand why but i feel like people often fail to appreciate the good parts of her and what makes her so dynamic. Honestly, alongside yuzuru shes one of my favourite characters in the series so thank you for this :)
Man, I really have to thank you. I knew I liked some parts of Ueno´s character but I didn´t knew exactly what until I watched this video. Keep up the good work!
Ueno is certainly an interesting character, with complexities to her personality that make her feel real. She isn't an asshole for no reason. She has her flaws, her reasons and feelings. Even if they all make her more unlikable or even a little understandable, she at least has something about her that feels authentic that contributes to the story and the overall theme of communication. She isn't a liar, she's upfront about her feelings even if they're mostly negative. It's true that Shouko needed to grow a spine to overcome her self loathing and learn to communicate her feelings instead of keeping them bottled up. It's just again no one seemed to have got her to understand that. Everyone treated her as something alien or her family treated her as something to protect from the world. She needed to understand to stand up for herself and find some acceptance of her disability as not a burden but as just another part of who she is. Ueno at least tried to communicate this to her, she was just insensitive in her way of going about it. Her straight forwardness was both a positive and negative. Her ignorance of Shouko's conflict stems from her lack of understanding on the long lasting effects bullying does to an already depressed person from a much younger age. The hurt from those actions and the built up self hate doesn't just go away with time. She thinks that her now being straight forward diminishes the consequences of those past actions when it isn't so simple. There is this barrier that blocks everyone from understanding each other, and without an understanding no one is gonna be able to move on from the past. Everyone in the film was struggling with something in their personal lives, nobody was entirely in the wrong. Its just without knowing what each other feels and gaining an understanding on what it feels like to be in their shoes, there's always gonna be conflict isolation and blaming of themselves and each other.
At all times throughout the play, Ueno is shown to be a completely selfish person who only does what he does to get recognition and validation for his actions, no matter how clumsy they may be. Not to mention that she literally blames Nishimiya for everything bad that happens in her life, never showing conscience or self-reflection in her actions, preferring to dress a mask of "superior" and inferiority to others to feel better about herself, including when she tries to mock Nishimiya and Ishida defends her, At this point she judges him pathetic for defending a person that he harassed when he was younger and that the two of them were ridiculous when in fact she had feelings for him and envied Nishimiya for the attention Ishida gave her to the point of playing Nishimiya's friend only to offend her when no one was looking. Not to mention her meddling in Ishida and his friend's disagreement when it was none of her business, showing that she was also not afraid to invade someone's private space if it would benefit her in some way, in this case to get Ishida's attention. It is also worth remembering the scene in the hospital that I mentioned before where she again assaults Nishimiya and offends her by attributing to her negative characteristics that belong only to herself. The only moment where she really shows an ounce of common sense is when she admits to Ishida that she is a horrible person, but still can't make up with Nishimiya, apparently because of her enormous ego. In my interpretation Ueno represents the worst in human beings, arrogance, intolerance, lack of empathy, falsehood, toxic possession, and many other things. To err is human, we all suffer and at some point we would like to be able to attribute to others errors that are entirely ours, the difference is in the way we deal with our problems, mature people seek to reflect on their failures and learn from their mistakes, something that Ueno does not do at any time in the work, and that is why I consider her such a detestable character.
@@joaopedroaraujo5990 First of all the movie abridges the manga and leaves out lots of details. Second watch the video because it's clear that you didn't since it tackles a lot of your points and sort of proves you wrong. You completely missed the mark.

@@joaopedroaraujo5990 Imo her "liking" shoko would be disingenuous and ruin her character completely because she really didn't and thus shouldn't really act like she does. I think it would be wrong of her to do. A lot of these traits also sounds a lot like kawaii. I personally prefer ueno over kawaii because ueno at least feels remorse and tries to better herself even if it's mainly regarding shoya and bullying him. I do agree with her sucking but she's honest and honest hate or honesty in general in that sense is more important than niceness.
@@user-tr9rw7ne8x This doesn't change the fact that she remains a selfish and petty person, even as the plot unfolds she still doesn't seem to be really is sorry by the things she did to Nishimiya or actually take responsibility for her actions. She was responsible for Nishimiya jumping out of the window and it was precisely her "sincere words" that caused it all to begin with. In every moment of the work she shows herself as an immature person with manipulative and ambiguous and even toxic attitudes. The part where she locks herself in her room with Ishida and kisses him without proper consent is further evidence of her possessive and somewhat frightening nature towards him. Ultimately, the character is essentially someone despicable and actively narcissistic. It is not for nothing that ironically the name Ueno itself means something like "unique" or "superior".
I think ueno was being just a little nice to nishimiya's feelings in elementary. Ueno tried to distance herself from shoko by just hinting at it. Ignoring her and basically overall was trying to tell, or hint, to shoko that "hey, we dont want to hang out with you." And that by itself is justifiable. If you dont want to hang out with someone, sure, you can just bluntly tell them. But ueno didnt. And this is where Ueno's "you didnt try to understand us" logic came from. Shoko didnt catch the hints that ueno didnt want to hang out. She persisted, and that annoyed ueno. Shoko of course, wasnt at fault either. She just wanted to make friends. She wanted to join in, but due to her disability, she was limited on what she can do. And at the hospital, ueno blames shoko for shoya's coma. Ueno was blinded, because she probably loves shoya and he loves shoko, and that led him to be hurt. So she blames shoko. She thinks that shoko believes herself to be a bother to everyone, and that she'll apologize but killing herself. And everyone can hold hands and agree that her past and all the bullying brought up that mentality, which I can say is a terrible and shityy mentality, having to go through it myself. I'm not justifying her bullying. I'm just saying that there were many moments the writers could have made her worse. Shoya and shoko arent the only ones going through self hatred. Ueno also was as well. It was much less noticeable, ofc. And change is hard. It's very hard. "Then how come ishida managed to change?" Because he was told and shown that what he did was wrong, and he has to suffer the consequences. No one told ueno that she was being stupid. She acknowledges that as a teenager. She also knows that shes a horrible person. She said it herself. If she could, she would have acted differently when she was younger. I dunno. I like how the authors wrote her, but not how she treated my poor baby.
I cant bring myself to dislike Ueno. She's way too real and relatable to be hated by me, representing many times a side of me i don't want to acknowledge, or something like that. She's mosty a victim of herself, not being able to handle her emotions throughout the anime, turning her into a really toxic person, but as i stated, that is way too real to be simply hated. It is almost as if i hated her, i would be hating a part of myself, kinda like Shinji in Evangelion. Kawai is a complete bitch tho.
Salsa Bila you go girl. Better logical reasoning than these pathetic attempts to defend, understand, relate to and feel sympathy towards a cowardly, selfish, psychopathic, sociopathic, hormonal-drivenly horny, merciless, non-empathetic bully of a demonic bitch. What about Shouko!? She's the one who suffers and because of things that aren't her fault! Shouko is the one I feel bad for and can relate to more. Ueno can suffer the most slow, inhumanely painful, excruciating death and that would make me smile.
I'm glad that this confirmed a lot about Ueno that I got from the movie. I saw a lot of people say they hate her and yes I can see why, but I felt like I always understood where those feelings were coming from. Even if I didn't condone some of the ways she went about expressing those feelings. "I don't think you need to like someone to be able to understand them" is basically how I feel about Ueno. But seeing how much was cut from the movie made me want to go and buy the entire set of the manga.
As much as I loved the film, easily top 5, i felt it didn't give Ueno much depth. She's technically the antagonist of the film so i really wished it could've done a better job saying how she was redeemed by the end.
Linny thiers always good in a person u just gotta dig deep and shouko saw thattt in her but ueno didn’t like her self at all but people can make a changes its never to late
I like Ueno as a character, specially after reading the manga. She may not do things as most people could want but I don't think that's a bad thing. I consider she is a very direct person and I like how she face a lot of situations, but sometimes she's too violent
wow i am very late to the party, but i for one was utterly intrigued by Naoka’s character development. on my first viewing, i was confused because i didn’t see any progression or arc, but after a second viewing it’s very clear to me. oddly enough, even while she’s not very likeable, she is my favorite character in the film. she’s just so fascinating and real.
How is she real. She's bullying a deaf girl the whole film, she's also bullying her infront of everybody which is stupid because people would tell her to stop, but no one does because every time she enters the scene everyone turns into a dried up sponge and basically acts like she's not there
I think most people who watch this movie fail to see characters in their own perspective. They grow attachments to certain characters (Shouko's a total sweetheart) because of what they see, but fail to realize not every character in the movie sees that as well. We only really see Ueno when she was younger, when she saw him again, at the amusement park, during his breakdown, and of course this scene. I love Shouko but not many people realize many characters don't see her 'kindness' and pure heartedness' like you do in the movie.
I still think she is a bully. People change, for the greater good, but I can't hate her or accept her. She has tried to turn ishida bad in their teen years and ended up backfiring every single time. She tried to accept the facts that Ishida wasn't gonna like her , as a lover. Again I can't hate or accept her or accept the person she became, and I hope someone agrees with me.
I hated Ueno as a character because not only did she mentally abuse Nishymiya but she also physically abused her. The part that I hated most is when Nishimiya was outside of the hospital and Ueno said that Nishimiya should be in there instead of him and started hitting her. I personally really wanted to see Yuzu beat the crap out of her.
6:20 Something curious is that her "x-mark" take too much time to dissapear and it dissapeared two times in the story. Her mark was the last for the main group. Like if Ishida struggles with his past. Ishida said to himself that he doesn't needs Ueno in his life. And Ueno asked him if he hates her? He said no but the "x-mark" only will dissapear when Ishida was thinking about being friends. But then she sets up a reunion with Ishida and his former friend (Shimana, the blond guy). So the "x-mark" appear again. Ishida fell mad and confuse for that. So the mark only will dissapear definitely until the School's festival.
Here’s my take on ueno using only the movie, she started bullying as a way to get attention from her crush, she secretly blames herself for ratting him out but still blames nishimiya(in denial pretty much) which was why she still bullied nishimiya but was friends with sahara, she tries to make it up by trying to get him to make up with his other friends, everything else in the video works
@The Anime Dude - You might find this difficult to believe but Ueno could have ended up with Ishida in the end IF they had continued with a sequal. This reminds me of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien in particular , though it isn't about bullying in specific . They don't go with the obvious choice when it's about a girl like Shoko . I watched enough anime to know this .. for example in Rascals ( Seishun Buta Yarō ) or Suzuka ; though they are quite different anime as in the plot they are simillar concerning certain relationships . If you think about it though , it makes sense ..does Ishida really likes Shoko or he loves her because of guilt . Something to consider nonetheless as a plot twist ...or perhaps a normal development . Sure , it's not " the american way " to do things as a plot ,as most of you would like to see things happen but that's why I preffer Japanese plots against that of american movies . It's clear that Uneo attitude towards Shoko is because of gelousy , because she loves Ishida ... the question is does Shoko really loves Ishida or it's because of what I mentioned before and she feels the need be with Ishida because of guilt or responsability .
I didn't like her as a person....but I definitely liked the way she was written as a character. One of the most emotionally complex characters in the show.
I'm actually glad I read the manga cause you can really understand uenos true personality before and after and her feelings towards ishida good job on the vid btw old vid but just had to check it out
I really appreciate the character's analysis you're being doing. It makes me see things I didn't noticed and how her path of redemption is different than that of Ishida. However, regardless what happened I can't bring myself to like her. I don't think her straight-forwardness and her bluntness is a good excuse for her to bully in the first place. Obviously she knew bullying is wrong but she did it anyway regardless if it's to impress Ishida or otherwise. It Out of all the characters I find her the most annoying even as a teens she still hate that Nishimiya and couldn't careless what she did to her. In her mind she only care how she looks like to Ishida. This attitude of hers trying to impress her crush is more or less the same par as Sakura Haruno from Naruto. Hence, the reason why I find her annoying :/ I understand how she's misunderstood character and she's definitely is well written thanks to mangaka who potray her as such. . Despite it all, I can't take pity on her and I might get black lash for this. But yes, I still hate her as I do before but I'm glad I get to understand why she behave the way she does. Still, being honest isn't a good excuse for you to bully regardlessly. I repeat being honest isn't a good reason to be a bully. Yes, she hate Nishimiya for liking Ishida too but to think she would go such a length to her rival. Just show how pathetic she is whether if Nishimiya a deaf person or not. That quality alone is enough to show she is a bully and she's knows it. . While I do agree she is self aware of her flaws and hate herself but again she brought it upon herself. She's certainly regret her actions towards Ishida but not so much towards Nishimiya because of the rivalry. It was only near the end she did try to make peace with Nishimiya. That is the beautiful thing about her I supposed her flaws. Still, I can't bring myself to like her even after seeing this video reviews. Again this is just my opinion in the matter. I hope no one attacks me for this xD
Nice video, bro. I like how you break down everything step by step, in the beginning about the 3 characteristics that she have & everything what happened in the past up until now, keep it up man. I would love to see more of these types of videos, and it was very accurate
I really liked Ueno as a character. Probably because I've read the manga, and her actions are better explained there. And in real life, I'd much rather be around someone cruelly blunt Luke her, than someone who pretends to be nice, like Kawaii
i understand her hatred for shoko but she went too far for redemption. AND AFTER THROWING HER DAMN FRIEND AND CRUSH UNDER THE BUS SHE EXPECTED HIM TO BE FRIENDS WITH HER AGAIN??! DELUSIONAL!!! And she manipulates everybody on sight. she doesn’t deserve redemption. id accept her redemption if she at least had some self awareness earlier but its good for the story so whatever.
This is why after watching the movie in cinemas and never reading the manga (still haven't yet done) I decided never to really judge Ueno at all almost. Because I knew something was missing from the very first time we saw her through half way of the movie. I understood it must have been a lack of development because of the movie adaptation. So watching this really kinda proved my hypothesis a little so thank you and good work :P
the obsession vs love thing... kinda hard to say... That 'rather he never wake', vs the 'all I can do is watch'... I think she wants him to wake but also knows that he will choose shouko. Her spending a lot of time at the hospital while also locking the doors was probably her being selfishly possessive of him all to herself while she's still able to before he wakes up. She's somewhat comparable to Eponine from Les miserable "on my own, pretending... ...without him, I feel his arms around me...", Although Eponine's love was pure and selfless, Ueno's a lot more selfish. Both were holding to the times they can pretend. Ueno despised herself for not being able to help him to wake up. And at the same time, she didn't want the time she can spend alone with him to end. I rewinded the video back to this point, as I had wanted to look into this a lil further myself, but I couldn't help noticing the slightest misquote/swaying in the commentary: 7:04 "almost".. Evidently the commentator was empathising over ueno's mixed emotions, but had not planned to cover that in the video (the video would have been too long if he covered everything)
That’s an interesting comparison to make. I’ve been thinking lately that her feelings of possession become so severe that she recognizes how unreasonable she’s being and whether hers is a mentally stable type of love and not a dependency. It’s a little odd that her feelings revive only after seeing Ishida again in the first place. Had they not had their chance encounter would she have cared about him at all?
I like how you weren't at all biased in this video, stating her good traits and her flaws. You just said the facts and wasn't praising or trashing her. Good job on the analysis!
Let's not forget the fact what Ueno just said to Shoya when she saw Shouko on the other side of the road. I mean after all those years, she still thinks they're kids and she wanted to do childish stuff to mess with Shouko like what she did was take her Hearing aids.
This is actually the video that made me read (and subsequentially buy) the manga a few years back, and I'm very glad that I did. Naoko Yamada still stands with the better overall piece of work, but the manga is great at expanding on some characters that really need and deserve it.
If they make movie about ueno this is so fire amd to explain how she act like that i think i can understand ueno she's inlove on ishida and she's trying to protect him but jealousy destroyed what she is😭
Very deep and complex character indeed, she felt really real. She see throught shoko character very well too. At the end, she is the one that understand her the most (she througth her fake smile, acknowledge the guilt of Shoko being a burden to others). Her real problem was anger issue that lead to miscommunication (the manga key theme actually). She saw better than anyone how people works and how to get things better but she was to blunt (and too sensitive?) to handle it proprely.
I always think Ueno is fine, she have a reason (love) and that's enough for someone to become anything.......even if it's not a pretty sight. The real bi*ch is F-ing Kawai though, the shiz she spouts through her mouth...ugh.........just as Ishida said it, she disgust me from the bottom of my heart. I do realized that apparently she herself knew that her personality is trash but Idk whether she went through any changes though....
I read the manga and seriously...They didn't show HER journey for people like me to understand her, they went from bitch Ueno to Nishimiya's & Sahara's friend Ueno & I was like REALLY??? THAT'S IT??? How can she be their friend so easily? After all she did to them both? How did she change so quickly? I wanna see HOW? I really wanted to understand how because I've been in Sahara's place when I was younger so I really understand her & Nishimiya since I used to admire a girl because she seemed cooler and stronger than me, she was in the same class as me in junior high, and I was 1st & she was 2nd in my class, she bullied me & always made me feel small because (obviously) she was jealous, even though I was trying really hard to be her friend. I really hoped to understand her when I saw this video but, unfortunately, I couldn't. Even now, after more than 10 years, I really hate her. My self confidence began deteriorating because of her (along with other reasons ofc but still...). I still can't forgive her for all the things she did to me who was an extremely shy person at the time. Thankfully I changed & became stronger but if I meet her now, I don't think I can be friends with her. Even if we're adults now. I really can't forgive her, even after all this time.
I'm sorry to hear you went through that, but yea, forgiveness definitely isn't easy. Even the people who're strong enough to forgive others are often bit in the butt again if those people haven't really changed. I guess that's why Uenos journey was so endearing to me.. to see her go from Bully to someone who actually changed enough to be friends with Sahara and Nishimiya 2 years after the events of the movie when they're all 20 was weird to me, and I wanted to really analyze what it was that allowed her to do that. 1. She was actually willing to admit where she was wrong and try to change. But 2. Sahara and Nishimiya were both forgiving enough to give her that chance. Without either one of those two things, they never would've became friends, so It really does make you think. Haha.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that while Ueno was willing to change, and that in itself is pretty huge, it would've essentially amounted to nothing as far as her relationships with others go if Nishimiya and Sahara weren't as forgiving as they were. They're both splendid characters that deserve their own analysis videos at some point. Haha.
Yup I think that's it. It's because of their kindness and especially their will to change & move on. Forgiving someone is something but willing to be their friend takes much more strength. So I really admire them both, I mean Nishimiya & Sahara.
Of the supporting cast, Ueno was always the most intriguing character to me. You couldn't reduced her to 'bad and selfish' but you felt like you should, because she was, well, selfish. This made me think about her a lot more than about others, and many of my thoughts found their way into your video, in that curious way ideas have of showing up in more than one place. Thanks for this great video!
Man this is an old video, don't know if my comment means anything but... I have to say, even though it is an unpopular opinion, i like Ueno character a lot. I agree with your analysis and understand the root of her flaws. I would have liked her to grow more just as Ishida did, but she did grow a lot in her own way. There were even times when i imagined she and Ishida together, how different things would have been if she had made better decisions.
I wish people would actually try to understand why Ueno does what she does before judging her. Ueno was always my fav character from the movie, though that doesn't mean I hate Nishimya. I like Nishimya too
Sorry for the 2 month hiatus everybody, I had 2 fast track classes throughout June, have been working around 40 hours a week, along with other personal matters and life events that made creating any good content nearly impossible.. Hope y'all can forgive me!
The Anime Dude glad to see you back!
The Anime Dude this is a pretty good analysis on a certain character. Do you make analysis like these often?
Thomas Fernandez I just made a 2nd one, but these have been my first two attempts at doing character analysis videos. Glad you liked the video, and I'll try to make more in the future! 😁
The Anime Dude Good for you & you're welcome, Hope you keep it up ; )
The Anime Dude why don't you just defend Hitler while you're at it?
She was the only one in the hospital room because, SHE LOCKED EVERYONE ELSE OUT! LITERALLY.
yojambo thank you for this!!! I thought I was the only one who saw this...
Damn, havent read the manga. Gotta go!
You don't need to like someone to show the respect everyone deserves._
h i m e Very well said. 💯
What exactly does she do in the end that changes?
Brian Aguilar she learned sign language
ueno blames nishimiya for ishida's injuries because she tried to kill herself, I partly believe it was also ueno's fault, I believe she's what pushed nishimiya over the edge.
That... i can't argue with that.
Nah she had nothing do with that , it was kawai that had that argument and ueno tried to fix it.
Well, it was after that fight in the ferris wheel that Shoko seemed to decline emotionally....
@@MelonTartVA no I believe it was after the bridge part
I think the same too. Damn, that bitch's mouth is like a tiger
Wow ive noticed that too
I believe she blames others and not hers just to feel better and that she's above all this, it's much like a lot of people on the internet these days
Wait they are love rival in school????? Ishida was bullying Nishimiya the whole time, how can you call that a love rival
@@h.skykraft2014 Ueno believed that nishimiya likes ishida because boys usually pick on girls they like.
Correct
Regardless of whether she's a likeable character, she is definitely a well written one. It was interesting seeing the dynamic between her and all the characters and her entire story arc. Great analysis man, and bonus points for using a C2 quote! 😊

thas definitely true, she's probably my favourite character, or one of them, because of the way she was written.

Hello Person yes exactly
she didmt try to change at all! wheres the proof of that?
She still was able to attend to him
I agree either way i want to be the one slaping her tbh
Everyone makes mistakes if the show carried on then she has probably changed
Because shes weak and no one knows that better than herself

Yes reading the manga explains everything, the movie is shit in comparison, i like the movie but fucking hell it's no where near as amazing as the manga.
2Spooky greatest
You shouldn’t have to read the manga to enjoy the movie
It's so easy to dislike and misunderstand Ueno, you really have to read between the lines to find her redeeming qualities. Good video, I can't bring myself to like her personally but I appreciate her character more now, flawed though it may be.
oreomonogatari Thanks, glad you liked the video! 😊
oreomonogatari I'm not misunderstanding her.

Cheers.
We saw what happened to Ishida; Ueno will likely end up like him if she was "punished."
Yet, there are many more ways to let her recognize herself and change her personality.
TL;DR:
What you're proposing is EQUALITY with the main objective to demonstrate what is right and wrong to the public.
Looking forward to watching the rest of this video series now.
exactly same opinion, i feel understand by someone omg
Natlie Lee here’s the thing, we usually “like” or “hate” the character not because the character is poor-written, mostly it’s because how well the author writing/analysis the characters, I mostly don’t like her character, but all of the characters personality in the manga/film are well written, relatable, make sense, and just perfection.
Most sensible comment
Very rational. Because of this comment, I think I do like Ueno as a well-written character, not as a person. Me, liking her as a person is more of a gray-ish area.
Most of the people here cant comprehend simple english but finally i found a sensible and reasonable comment here thank effing god,
Those guys who just hate this video because they cant understand a simple thing like that doesnt deserve to watch the movie tbh
Thank you random guy on the internet
Sadly, I see Ueno as a character who was never told she did wrong, and so she thought what she was doing was ok. So she is the opposite extreme of what Shoya became. He was shamed for his bullying so he became a social recluse and tried to change.
While Ueno was never told what she did was wrong and so it continued.
No that's a very weak understanding of her character
@@D14MBK that’s fair. At the time, I’d only seen the movie once.
I never really hated Ueno, I really liked her straightforward manner and her awareness of her own faults. Kawai on the other hand is a real bi*ch.
Eroid Oh, definitely. I don't think anyone likes Kawai. Haha.
The Anime Dude,i actually liked Kawai,AT FIRST!!
Ueno is human. Kawai I am still not sure. :D
Probably the realest character in any kind of anime i have watched

Even after watching this video i still can't bring myself to like, or even feel any remorse, for Ueno.
Hudson Ball ur just as dense as her
How so?
AMEN
Very insightful. Interresting take on Ueno character. I felt like her character was like the embodiment of the self-hatred felt by Ishida and Nishimiya. Almost like giving that self-hatred a voice to direct it onto the main characters. I can't say I liked her, but I don't think I was supposed to
wolfgirlholo62 That's a very interesting take on it indeed. 💯😊
We're all forgetting the true villain of this story...
The teacher
It gets even worse. In the manga, the teacher apparently hated Shoko as well. I don't know the details, but I think having a deaf girl in his class was annoying to him. He was all too happy to see her leave and blame the entire situation on Ishida bullying her outside of school and his supervision, so he couldn't be blamed for not doing anything about the bullying.
@@alpha-sama Yikes. Granted, my most hated character from A Silent Voice is still Kazuki Shimada, but the teacher is terrible too
I don't think it's the teacher's fault
@@akhandtripathipyz9888 i think the teacher is partly to blame why the bullying kept progressing for shoko, he basically watched as shoko was continuously treated badly by her classmates, and didn’t do a single thing about it. although he did out shoya later on in front of the class, I don’t think that makes him a better person, he definitely could’ve stepped in and helped but he didn’t, and a teacher’s role is so prevent bullying and he failed to do that
@@bunnymabs
He failed miserably but to be fair he talked with Shoya a few times and asked him to stop and talk with Shoko if he was curious about her condition.
I think Ueno suffers the most from what was left out from the manga. In the movie, she does not really seem to have any redeemable qualities.
TecDax I agree 100%, which is the primary reason I felt the need to make this video in the first place. Haha.
this is late but i think the movie indicates her potential for redemption when she learns how to say moron in sign. and again, its redemption in her own way.
Like if she knows what she was doing she will know that the most responsible one for everything is the teacher (which is the worst charctar in story and if there is a villan it will be him , and by the way he is way worse in the manga than the movie) , while what left of the responsiblity are divide to ishida (who did what he could to make up for it) and the rest who laughed and go along with it (includes uenu who admited it and kawaii who didn't) in the end when she calls nishimya stuped using signs (she tried to learn sign language for nishimya but tries to act she didn't care ) so she had some sort of regret , and it's not as much as improvment as the one ishida had but still something better than nothing and to be fair she didn't get bullied unlike ishida which was a major reason for his redemption , and they cutted in the movie alot of her arc which make you thinks if you watched it you may feel like she isn't like a sadistic person who enjoys seeing others suffer but more like very stupied with a big mass of conflicting emotions , so she isn't a total bad person with pure black heart nor an angel , she is trying to change maybe at her pace which realistic to her charactar because it's not expected for someone like her to come the next day apologising for everything and acts the nicest way towards nishimya but she tries
About nishimya not blaming anyone that is not a good thing either she is blaming onlyherself herself to unhealthy degree ( which is the total opposite of kawaii ) , and that mostly because how kids thinks mostly those of disabilty who being bullied ask themselfs why it is always me and not anyone else ? So i must be the reason for that .
Another reason is because she saw herself as the reason for her parents' divorce , so this goes with her as she gets older the self blaming for everything , this why there are lectures how to handle kids with disabilty tells you don't tell them there is no problem with you at all because they will see how others reacts to them which will make them thinks you are laying etc... .
@@ahmedabdullah6779
Doing something unhealthy and doing something wrong are totally different things.
The last thing you want is someone with disabilities to feel they have to apologize for having a disability or for making people "uncomfortable."
In any case, none of what you said invalidates my point on Ueno.
@@1idd0kun
what nishimya doing is both wrong and unhealthy while this is isn't meant to be a way to say nishimiya are like ueno but still this way of thinking are wrong because it will enventually leads you to sucide thought atleast , or to make you commit it which is wrong in about your self and those who are love you , if nishimya knew how sad her family and ishida will be if she did commit sucide she wouldn't , she thought they would be happier if she is gone
Plus not everyone blames nishimya in the movie most of the charactar don't , she thinks they are being nice to her which is i explaind why she has this mindset in my earlier comment
About the movie and it is not good it is up to you of course how good you sees it but i think you misunderstood the point of the movie it is not about victim blaming it's about ishida who learns with nishimya how to forgive themselves .
And about what i said and how it invalidets your point on ueno , your point that she is a sh** person in your book this an opinon not a point , if you meant your "points" then it weren't meant to invalidets your points about her it was about looking a diffrenet angle at the things this why i said you got a point in my first comment but when it come ti discuss the points not all your points are correct
That she never atoned is not entirly correct , she had a redemption and not as ishida but it still consider a redemption , so if you didn't find acceptable that understandble but doesn't change the fact that she had a redembtion
And about always blaming the others it gives a false assumption that she don't blame herself and blames other falsely just because it is a way of running out of responpility , while that is not true she blames herself as well , and the only one she is wrong about every blame , while blaming nishimya is wrong but blaming herself and kawaii and the rest of the class is right
@@1idd0kun i wrote my replay before you edit your comment in case my reply seemed a bit odd , plus none of this is your fault i was talking in general not about a scene
Plus what conversation happend between her mother or grandmother or sister etc... about how none of it is her fault doesn't have to be in the movie she wouldn't ask them everytime she knows what they will say but is she beliveing them or not , and about people blame her i explaind it in my previous comment plus she tells ishida if he stayed with her he will be misrable he replied that is not true so it is not true that every one blames her .
@@ahmedabdullah6779
"he replied that is not true so it is not true that every one blames her"
That is not the same as telling her that she's not at fault. No one tells her this in the movie (or the manga). In fact, if at least one person told her this, the story would have been considerably better, because without this, the story is validating the victim-blaming that several characters (like Ueno) inflict on her.
"Plus about the victim blame in the movie this is a feeling nishimiya feels"
No that's not what victim-blaming means.
Lol, no need for fighting in my comment section guys... I think we all know Ishida's Mom is the real best girl.

Keep it up!

This is super well thought out.
The manga seems so much in-depth than the movie.
It definitely had more time to flesh out the side characters, whereas the movie primarily focused on Ishida & Nishimiya, and even they're a lot more in depth in the manga. Definitely a good read, I recommend it! Haha.
ueno: *_breathes_*

I still hate her
The amount people missing the point of a character analysis in the comment section is mind boggling, who cares if she is a sympathetic or good person, who cares if she is likable , being likable , sympathetic and good are overrated qualities to character writing, the fact that she commits all these selfish acts and having understandable characterization and motivation to do so is exactly what makes her so well crafted and well written.
I agree but I like the antiheroes that have a moral compass because as much as I love a well written character she is still at fault and that is why I hate how relatable she is because she gets it of easier than society would usually let because it's always interesting when someone with conflicting ideals is put in a position where they have to question why they do what they do and how they plan ahead for it because karma hates everyone even those who dont deserve
In summary I respect her character and I dont hate her and she is flawed (which is the point of it all) i'm still salty that she hit shoko and we didn't get the chance to see her apologize and change to my animen cliche of the moral high ground
Danm I wrote a lot
Well written characters do not have to be liked ffs
My god, somebody finally said it. Someone doesn't have to be good to be likable, atleast in fiction. I find Ueno more of a gray-ish character though. Even so, I don't believe that characters are even supposed to be 'good' or 'redeeming' for them to be a great character.
Finally
Who cares if she's "well written"? If I don't like her because of her character, then that's all I care about, I couldn't give a fuck about her analysis. The only people who try to justify her are shitty people irl.
I always liked her. She somehow feels like a very real character. There was times i felt disgusted by her actions but she is how a real tsundere would behave in the real world.
Uh... no not really. Her character feels more real than the others. She is a bitch? Yes and... no? She doesnt do it cuz she is feeling like it. It just the interactions. And she miss the old time... and ended up blaming the deaf girl
Tsundere is a tired trope

Please don’t associate anger issues and bullying with being tsundere. At least tsunderes have a sweet side, she never did.
Same I like her because she’s real and I did felt disgusted form her by her actions but I still always liked her
Rose but there are many tips of tsunderes not all of them started out sweet and I think Ueno did have a good side but she was to scared to show it
i think ueno is one of the most unappreciated characters in the whole series,
yes i have despised her for falling under peer pressure to bully shouko, but that literally applies to all her friends including shoya himself
i reference this anime heavily to my real life which is why i relate to those characters so much ( or atleast i want to feel like) and honestly ueno is the kind of person i will never let go
seeing how people in real life go to the extent to cover up their past mistakes to not let down their pride. Ueno strikes me as a loyal friend
in times where she let shoya down she tries her best to make up for it when they grew up, i personally find that very admirable, on and all she wants to change. and it takes courage and a lot of it to come back from the fall that she had to face shoya once again
in conclusion, everyone makes mistakes but not everyone faces them up heads on, ueno suppresses her true feelings towards shouko when they meet again after middle school because she wants to do the right thing.
Just imagine you having to say that "i was wrong ", killing your past ego and letting people see that flaw in you is just something i feel like shouldnt be overlooked especially because she didnt need to. in the end, this is why i think she is a very good person in heart.
nicely said man t.t
J H Indeed, facing your mistakes head on is not always an easy thing to do. Nicely said. 💯
Oh yeah i also want a friend who beats up disabled people and slaps their mom. Best friend ever dude
Thank you for describing ueno❤️

@@criesinpoor1725only real reason I like her ☠️🙏🏽
Ueno also hated nishimiya because she never showed her true emotions to her or others, always smiling and hiding her discomfort.
A silent voice is so great, the characters are so REAL!!! I've met people just like every person in the cast.
Great Vid, you deserve more praise.
ImagineBreaker Thanks! 😁😊 & I agree, that's what makes this movie so great, they're all just people trying to understand one another! Glad you like the videos! 😁😊
like someone said
"I may be a hero in my story but a villian in yours"
Great comment and well said! 💯
Pff that ending tho. I was reading and it was nice, I liked it. I loved the ending tho lol.
What do you think?
I used to hate her but after a second watch years later i finally understood her and what she was trying to get across.
Oh yes, finally someone who sees the broader perspective of ueno, I have been explaining to others about the misconceptions of her but many just don't think through what I've said. It's really glad to see you make such a great video to allow others to see a different perspective of ueno, thank you so much for sharing your view.
Chen Xi Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 😊😁
It's the realism of the world or it just takes too long for it to happen
That was wonderful! I'm so glad someone delved into ueno's deep and complex character and gave her the understanding she deserves. She's a character that gets a lot of hate and i can understand why but i feel like people often fail to appreciate the good parts of her and what makes her so dynamic. Honestly, alongside yuzuru shes one of my favourite characters in the series so thank you for this :)
sheng yan No problem, I'm just glad you liked the video! 😁😊
Man, I really have to thank you. I knew I liked some parts of Ueno´s character but I didn´t knew exactly what until I watched this video. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I'll do my best!
@@user-tr9rw7ne8x Yes I understood the video, but I still somehow find her a hateful person. In my opinion, Ueno itself already suffers from a horrible feeling inside.
Hermes Rodrigues I love how you ended this comment. 😂😂😂
Ueno can suffer the most slow, inhumanely painful, excruciating death and that would make me smile.
if thats who your are then you should hate yourself
She is the culprit, not the victim. Stop protecting bullies, stop blaming the victim. this is why school shooting exist.
You should hate every part of you resembling Ueno and make your best efforts to change those parts. That's the way you go about it.
I fully agree! I really hope most people saw this while reading. She really is an amazing character.
Wow great video I never even new that this type of stuff can happen
XL XL Thanks, glad you liked it! 😁
As much as I loved the film, easily top 5, i felt it didn't give Ueno much depth. She's technically the antagonist of the film so i really wished it could've done a better job saying how she was redeemed by the end.
I want to hate her, but I can’t stop loving her badly. She’s obviously trying to change herself. I love her so much.
ah yes when i try to change i assault deaf people too!
Bro, you need to calm down
6:20 Something curious is that her "x-mark" take too much time to dissapear and it dissapeared two times in the story.
Her mark was the last for the main group. Like if Ishida struggles with his past.
Ishida said to himself that he doesn't needs Ueno in his life.
And Ueno asked him if he hates her?
He said no but the "x-mark" only will
dissapear when Ishida was thinking about being friends.
But then she sets up a reunion with Ishida and his former friend (Shimana, the blond guy). So the "x-mark" appear again.
Ishida fell mad and confuse for that. So the mark only will dissapear definitely until the School's festival.
Great analysis! She is my favorite character in the movie.
It's clear that Uneo attitude towards Shoko is because of gelousy , because she loves Ishida ... the question is does Shoko really loves Ishida or it's because of what I mentioned before and she feels the need be with Ishida because of guilt or responsability .
ueno is a tsundere
thank you for coming to my ted talk
Yup!!
I didn't like her as a person....but I definitely liked the way she was written as a character. One of the most emotionally complex characters in the show.
Ueno is my favorite Character
Clannad - Existence dude you sure know how to get a like
Ueno is probably my favorite character from the manga (Shoya should be 2nd), loved your video
Thanks, glad you like it!
DarkPredatorJCX Gaming Thanks! Glad you liked it! 😁 I'll definitely try to do some more videos like this in the future! 😊
I really liked Ueno as a character. Probably because I've read the manga, and her actions are better explained there. And in real life, I'd much rather be around someone cruelly blunt Luke her, than someone who pretends to be nice, like Kawaii
Thank you, I feel the whole cast plays an important role and they all have realistic motives, thank you for clearing it up a bit
i understand her hatred for shoko but she went too far for redemption.
I really relate to her and ishida :>
I almost cried during this!!! IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL! I really want the manga.
Man I used to hate Ueno, but damn you really opened my eyes on her. Hell, I can sorta relate.
Naoko is definitely in my top 5 favorite characters of the manga
She is a sociopath or psychopath plain and simple
When i first watched the movie i fell in love Ueno for some reason and now i love her even more.
I decided to watch this, I actually quite enjoyed this!
TheMarineGamer IGGHQ Np, I was kind of the same way after I watched it, so I'm glad you liked it. 😁
the obsession vs love thing... kinda hard to say...
SassyLils Thanks, glad you liked the video! 😁😊
If they make movie about ueno this is so fire amd to explain how she act like that i think i can understand ueno she's inlove on ishida and she's trying to protect him but jealousy destroyed what she is😭
Anybody notice about clannad soundtrack in this clip?
Danish Amsyar I did. *insert troll face here*
I recognized it right when it played. Love Clannad.
D: I thought it was Kingdom Hearts!
Clannad is my top anime. Been listening to the ost for around 7 years now.
Shirayone Yea, I don't think anyone liked Kawai. Haha.
The Anime Dude out of curiosity, who's your favorite character in Koe no Katachi? (mine is Yuzuru btw)
Shirayone me too, I liked Yuzuru; she is an awesome sister and a relatable character.
Shirayone I honestly don't know, it has a ton of great characters. Prolly Yuzuru tho I guess, she was my fave on my first watch through.
The Anime Dude I think granny Nishimiya is a really great character (especially in the Manga).
Ueno movie sounds good to explain a lot of things through silent voice like why she lie that or how his old friend save ishidfrom drowning
Great video !
KawaiiYandereQueen Thanks!!! 😁😊💜
Nice video, never really thought too much about this character, but this video made think about her more.
Watching a video and then leaving your own thoughts on the matter means everything. 💯 Even on older videos. Thanks for watching. 😁
I wish people would actually try to understand why Ueno does what she does before judging her. Ueno was always my fav character from the movie, though that doesn't mean I hate Nishimya. I like Nishimya too
