    I was surprised that u chose to dedicate a whole video to one of the most minor characters yet amazed that u could make his presence seem so major and important ! I think the significance of his character does lie in the core themes of the series , confronting your past and changing as long as ur alive. I remember being a bit disappointed at the end of the manga when the confrontation between him and ishida wasnt shown , I really thought this guy deserved some spotlight and wanted to know if he ever felt regret or remorse over the past. But at the same time , it did end the manga with a positive message telling the audience to open their own doors so hopefully ishidas courage does lead to him and kazuki coming to terms in some way , friends or not. Congratulations btw I hope ur channel continues to grow :-)

      He's not minor character at all.
      He is the main reason why Ishida goes through all the suffering and trauma, but also the first one who made Ishida realized that bullying is wrong and how bad it felt of being bullied.
      This character also has many mystery left for the audience to interpreted in the manga version. (Anime once again cut most of his screen time)

    One thing that I have noticed is that shimada has very blank eyes, like he is always bored, and whenever he smiles, his eye's don't change. A lot of people say that smiling isn't genuine unless it's also in the eyes. By giving shimada those blank eyes, I think the director/manga artist is trying to show that shimada is not happy with his life. By hinting that he might be going through a difficult time, without going much into it, the film/manga seems more realistic. Everybody has their own lives, and it is very unrealistic that somebody would know exactly what is going on with the lives of all the people around them, so I think that shimada's character is very important in in making this film more believable.

      yeah based on the video it seems he had strict parents and were kinda hard on him wanting to have a "talented/successful" son and kinda forced him to mature faster or wouldn't surprise me if his parents abuse him. anime usually make it obvious if a character is being abused but with the more realistic way the series is handling things there aren't always obvious signs or a way to tell if someone is being abused unless its like over the top kind

    Ishida was forced to accept he was wrong. No one turned on Shimada though, this means that he would have to look critically at himself and decide for himself that he was wrong. And this is a hard thing to do.
    Ishida was forced to give everything up. Shimada didn't want to do that himself and instead denied he bullied Ishida. Most would do the same.
    Time passes and Shimada feels too guilty to be Ishida's friend, so he helps out in secret because he feels as though he doesn't deserve recognition.
    When Ishida meets Shimada after the final chapter it'll be by Ishida's choice, not Ueno's. I like to think this will allow them to reconcile without it feeling forced

      I actually liked how they did that, I thought it was super relatable that they just didn’t become friends anymore. Kazuki is a childhood friend that stopped being friends. Which is something that a lot of kids can relate to. You don’t always have an happy ending or get to redeem yourself as you may be a antihero in another story you can be the main character in yours. Kazuki drifted apart and telling people or kids that you will always be friends in the end is sending them in the wrong direction. Sorry I posted this 5 years too late

    I am glad that he was against the bullying that ishida has done but I don't think I can like his character much because of the fact that he turned into everything he was seemingly against. He didn't like the bullying done but he bullied the bully. He was no better. He also betrayed his friend. They were friends, he should of at least help point ishida to the right path. I never liked that part and it angers me personally. That's pretty much all I think of him since I don't know much else of him other than that part. I guess I like that he matured more so he was still happy for his 'old friend' when he sees him happy.

    What a curious statement: "Ueno, I don't want such unnecessary kindness."
    He recognizes it as "kindness" to bring Shoya to him. This rules out him feeling indifferent or positively about his behavior toward Shoya and almost necessarily suggests a feeling of well deserved guilt on his part. He is not angry at being confronted with someone he hurt, but it's "unnecessary". If the emotions were too overwhelming he would be angry or scared, but this is a calm reaction, though not indifferent. I would bet a lot of thought has been flooded into Shimada view of what he did to Shoya. There is an acceptance of his responsibility as such, "kindness" trying to mend or provide closure to heal was not needed. Shimada has chosen that guilt is the price he can pay for it.
    Another interesting choice (though mostly in the anime) is the choice or clothing they give Shimada in his younger various. When he is produce criticism on Shoya, he gads his hands behind the along sleeves and covers his mouth. This piece of art understand communication and makes an effort to hid his when he acts this way.
    Shimada seems- to me- like a boy who can compartmentalize very efficiently. He is very internal as a character, which would explain why there is so much mystery to him. He has managed his own feeling regarding what he did and the choices he made. To be clear he hasn't ignored it, I would think he accepted it and resolves to suffer and live with it.
    The stoics would be proud

    Man, it just hit me just how much Shimada could've actually meant by saying 'Do you really want to be acknowledged by those pieces of sh*t?'. It feels like he meant so much more, as if he actually meant to say these exact words to Ishida before, even when he himself was bullying Ishida. I feel like Shimada wanted Ishida to grow, the same way his teacher did. In a very fked up way. I feel he wanted Ishida to stop doing stuff to be acknowledged by his peers. Ishida deeply cares what others think of him, this is proven multiple times. From how he thinks Nishimiya sees him to him being afraid of his friends finding out he bullied Nishimiya. Let's not forget how the contest of courage is just to prove yourself to others by doing dumb sht. We can see Shimada was the fastest to mature of the three so I can see him wanting to teach Ishida a lesson, maybe at the beginning making Ishida grow wasn't his true objective and he was just a jackass. But him secretly helping Ishida seemed like his own way of redeeming his actions, but he was doing it for himself. Not to prove himself to anybody. He's not the kid trying to look like the hero to get recognition for it. But that's maybe me thinking too much of it lol

      Could that be the Mangaka's way of saying Shimada's a POS?
      the directors they're talking about are POSes for not acknowledging, and Shimada apparently will never apologize (he may not even admit to himself) he too was a bully. Not only will Shimada never acknowledge, this may be an admission he never, ever will. This little scene is just the Mangaka saying Shimada will never acknowledge.
      Unlike Kawai who knows eff-dup stuff happened and tries to run from it, Shimada may be the most pathetic in never admitting anything - he abused Shoko and Shoya. (I'm movie-only so far).

    Great video: Here's my thoughts on Shimada.
    1. He gives in to peer pressure and since Ishida seemed 'cool' and 'fun' he was scared to speak out and lose his friend or because Ishida has a very domineering personality as a kid.
    2. It became easy to betray Ishida because he didn't wanna get in trouble by parents/authorities- his parents probably saw him as a bad influence + Shimada probably started to get bored of Ishida's childish games.
    ----He bullies Ishida because he's angry that Ishida tried to rat them out even if he DID try to tell him not to, plus he is a kid and could be a hypocrite thinking his involvement in the bullying is not as bad as what Ishida did, so he doesn't deserve the same punishment.
    ----Now that Ishida is disliked by the teacher and class, Shimada is no longer afraid of peer pressure and can be himself more around Ishida because Ishida will always get blamed because he's a 'bully.' So he takes out his anger onto him. Maybe he felt some resentment towards Ishida when Ishida forced him to do wreckless and dumb things.
    3. He seems depressed and guilty for what he did in his past and probably is bored with life.
    4. He doesn't wanna be friends with Ishida and probably still thinks he's lame deep down, but he feels really guilty for what he did and if he did want to be friends with the new Ishida he's heard about from Ueno and seen; he probably doesn't think he deserves it and probably doesn't think Ishida would forgive him. He has too much pride to apologize to Shimada.

  • @funyarinpa336
    @funyarinpa336 6 лет назад +147

    While Shimadas hypocrisy and actions as a child are despicable I think that goes to show that he's one of the most "real" characters. I'd say he is actually closest to Mashiba in character. Mashiba sees something he considers wrong and doesn't try to understand but simply makes a judgement call. Meanwhile Shimada sees something he considers wrong (and is too opportunistic to stop it) but then goes "It's okay todo that thing I consider wrong to the person that did it first."
    Not trying to turn this into a political discussion but merely choosing an example: It's a little like what we see both the left and the right ends of the political spectrum corrently doing. Both sides point at the other end and go "These people are so horrible for reasons x and y. You don't do these kinds of things." but then continue to do exactly those things towards those enemies due to a sense of them "deserving it". It's a flaw many humans have to disregard the rules they expect another person to follow once they have deemed that person as being terrible so it makes sense that Shimada would act in a similar way.
    We like to think we're all nice and noble but in reality I think while Shimada, Mashiba and Sahara are the closest to what one could consider "the average human" in this movie. Not as openly hostile as Ueno, not as narcissistic as Kawai and not as self-deprecating as Shoko or Ishida but somewhere in the middle. Either by putting on a facade of fake courage while being afraid to have and voice an opinion (Sahara), considering themselves to be on a higher moral ground than "them" and thus feeling free to judge and punish others (Mashiba) or thinking that treating others wrong because they treat people wrong is "fair" and "just deserts" (Shimada). They all don't act out of evil intent but find different ways to escape any kind of responsibility which is something humans very commonly do.

    Another great video!
    First off, your thumbnail on this one is fantastic. Second, your focus on this character is fantastic, as this character, though minor, is incredibly important in the overall plot of the story, and his inclusion brings to light so many of the manga's central themes (which you touch on here). You say a lot of things that have been on my mind ever since I read the manga. And I find your speculation on the character's motives really interesting. I think we, as the readers and viewers, are supposed to do that with his character, as that is exactly what Ishida has to do.

    i have a feeling that shimada has a really strict family background so he's the kind of kid who has no freedom and is forced into focusing soley on academics and music and basically exceling his life like a good ol asian kid. so he is always so lifeless (look at the boys blank eyes man) and detached from everyone (the way he looks away from others and his cold tone and that scene where he looks at hirose and ishida play while doing nothing) but i feel like he actually really wants to reach out and have fun like a normal kid.
    i think maybe his parents told him not to mix with hirose and ishida, maintain a distance and not to have "too much fun" so he can focus on school, which made him unable to connect well with others haing this huge expectation weighing him down and the overwhelming dilemma of listening to his parents or his heart. which is also why i think it would make him feel kind of oppressed by his parents, making him vent this frustration, or rather he tries to feel like he is in control over his life by bullying ishida and being the "ringleader", being the dominant cool kid coz he could never assert any authority at home or have a say over his life. plus he was quick to protect his reputation and stay out of trouble so as to maintain a perfect track record by pushing the blame of bullying nishimiya to ishida, probably for his parents and what they have warned him to do (excel and be a star student blahblah)
    im pretty sure ishida is smart enough to acknowledge all of his messed up actions and motivations, or at least when he grew up he did, and this guilt and self awareness is what makes him inclined to make it up to ishida (saving his life) but not having the balls to do so explicitly (telling ueno not to tell ishida he saved him) because for one, he might not forgive him for such malice, but two, i think he lacks the social skills to do so and felt like the old him is still trying to distance the self away from people, like ishida. (three, this one might be far fetched but, i think this past of his was never revealed to anyone, so nobody truly understands who ishida is and why he did what he did. on the surface it would be incredibly hard to forgive somebody like him because nobody saw the hardships he went through or bothered to empathise with this big bully. which is why in some ways i see great similarities between him and ishida, both bullies whom nobody truly tried to empathise with and understand. so anyways i think this is also why shimada is not inclined to approach ishida as he thinks he won't understand)
    shimada ultimately probably wants to make amends and have friends but he just can't reach out so when given the opportunity to help ishida he does so without hesitating but never confronts him directly. i think shimada is a really complex character that, while some/many might disagree, is sympathetic and relatable. the adverse and far-reaching effects of family imposed pressures is criminally not-talked-about and how it can manifest into a monster who lives the rest of his life in guilt, shame, and lack of true friends who can understand him and whom he can reach out to. this is what i absolutely adore koe no katachi for -- their characters are SO REAL you empathise and feel for them so much and so it really does change your perspective and teach you invaluable life lessons. thanks for coming to my ted talk lol.

      allow me to rant more LOL: i feel so upset? or like disappointed when people FAIL TO SEE THE POINT AND REAL VALUE of this beautiful film and comment shit like oh they are tokenising disabled people and encouragin people to pity these people by presenting nishimiya as a damsel in distress plus how every other character is one dimensional motivated by shallow intentions like seriously? were you watching the film with your eyes and EARS AND HEART closed? clearly (or so i thought), the main character is ishida and not exactly nishimiya, so if you were gonna criticise the film for not focusing on nishimiya and her story enough then hunny youre sorely missing the point. koe no katachi is focusing on the perspective of the bully and for god sake even so, nishimiya is portrayed as somebody who has lost their sense of self, who does everything to please others even though she struggles with mental issues herself, and bringing to light how people dont notice these things and just treat try to care for them without actually empathising so i dont see how the film makers were just capitalising on diabilities to elicit our pity for the disabled (in fact it might even be trying to make us pity the bully!! which i feel is such an interesting take considering how every other media post only focuses on the victim) because if you seriously think it is so then i sincerely feel imho that you are the one who is misinterpreting this masterpiece. wowe i feel like such a karen right now AAAAAAAAA

    Wow, I've only seen the movie and never read the manga, but this really changed how I felt about Shimada. It really shows how you shouldn't judge someone until you get to know them better and see what kind of person they are. I think if he and Hirose really hated Shouya, they would have just let him die. I hope you'll analyze Yuzuru next, as I've heard she was picked on just because her sister was deaf and I only know what I've seen in the movie, and it's obvious the manga fleshed out the characters much more than the movie. Awesome video, dude! (Also, if you want to branch out and analyze characters from other anime, may I recommend a few? Satoko Houjou from Higurashi no naku koro ni, or Madoka Koumoto from A Bridge to The Starry Skies, or Yuki Kanno from Corpse Party)

      You sem to have a rather nihilistic view on what it means to sympathize with a character and don't seem to have the human capability of knowing what it means to have an intangible emotional relationship with a character you admire. In a way I can't help but pity you. Being able to read or watch a form of media where the characterization feels so realistic to you that you can feel touched by their actions on an intangible facet is probably one of the greatest feelings one could get to experience in our world. If more people treated characters the same way as you and OP did, no one would truly ever have a real appreciation for literature nor art and many forms of creativity would be taken for granted.
      An antagonist who's been shown to be heartless and have no redeeming qualities about them would, ordinarily, be treated as such. A simple antagonist who stands as nothing more but a grating obstacle to the protagonist in the show.
      OP doesn't even bother to explain something meaningful for why she feels he could be redeemed enough in her eyes for him to be seen in a way as being a favorable character. She simply affections him for the mere fact that he has a good looking face in character design.
      That is the lowest form of a shallow personality I can say I've ever come across in my life, and is rather juvenile and immature way of thinking. But hey, obviously she didn't gain any form of depth from the show from how she makes herself out to be. Instead she probably enjoyed it for the "shiny colors" and "Cute boys" like any other brainless shallow bimbo like her could only ever gain from anything they ever watch.

    Am I the only one who gets the feeling that Shimada is motivated by a jealousy for Shouya stemming from a crush he has on Ueno whom his character is meant to be a foil to? The manga already established that he had an interest in girls durring the 6th grade and only joined in the bullying of Shouko despite initially being against it when he saw Ueno doing so. This would imply that like Ueno he only started bullying Shouko to impress his crush, but unlike her, Shimada seemed to resent what he was doing as indicated by his occasional objections to the bullying. This would explain why he so quickly turned on Shouya when Shouya took the blame for what they did to Shouko and become a ring leader in tormenting him. It was meant as retaliation. Shimada resented himself for had he felt he was forced to do to Shouko, but liking Ueno too much to blame her, chose to blame Shouya instead for pushing both himself and Ueno into bullying Shouko. Is in line with what Ueno said about Shimada resenting Shouya for causing the trouble with Shouko and trying to drag others into it. The fact that Shimada took issue with Shouya trying to spread the blame is particularly interesting as if I remember correctly, Ueno was one of the few Shouya mentions by name when saying that others where responsible too for what happened to Shouko. This seems to suggest Shimada took issue with Shouya trying to get Ueno in trouble. This would explain why Shimada was so insistent in getting Ueno to join in on the torment of Shouya, not only was he trying to make her turn on her crush and come over to his side, Shimada was also in his mind helping Ueno to get revenge on Shouya for making her do the things she did and try to get her in trouble for it. Ironically, like how Ueno's aggression towards Shouko for Shouya's sake would only end up hurting Shouya, Shimada's well intentioned actions would only cause Ueno to feel guilty for what happened to Shouya...

    • @controversialopinions3659
      @controversialopinions3659 4 года назад +2

      Like Ueno, it also seems that Shimada's crush did not go away with age as he is resistant to reconciliation with Shouya when Ueno presented him with the chance to do so much like the way Ueno refused to reconcile with Shouko due to their romantic rivalry. This would also explain why he helped with the musical accepts or Shouya's movie despite his hostility towards him. Remember it was Ueno's idea to involve Shimada in the movie, his participation with the movie along with his later following and saving of Shouya was all done for Ueno. I do not believe Hirose and Shimada were following Shouya on the night he fell to reconcile with him as it would make no sense why they did try again to reconcile with Shouya after they saved his life...

    • @controversialopinions3659
      @controversialopinions3659 4 года назад +1

      Remember that Ueno was the only one who tried to contact Shouya after he told everyone off at the bridge but to no avail. I believe Shimada followed Shouya to confront him about insulting Ueno and giving her cold feet after he found out what happened, and that Shimada brought Hirose along as back up in case things got physical. I also believe that Shimada's decision to rescue Shouya was for Ueno as well as he understood how much Shouya meant to her and the pain it would cause her to lose him. This is why Shimada is not shown visiting Shouya and goes out of his way to prevent Shouya from trying to contact him later over the save by telling other to keep it a secret that it was him who saves Shouya. He clearly still resents Shouya but is willing to save his romantic rival for the sake of his crush.

    Shimada interests me, I’ll say that. I think much of what you put forth in this video rings very true - I just wish we would’ve been allowed to see more of him in the film (I’ll probably read the manga, too, but as of right now, I haven’t yet). I think when it comes to bullying, and perhaps especially when the culprits are children, there are some very complex issues to consider. Having not yet reached emotional maturity and being at an age where your own identity begins to truly take shape, Shimada turning his back on Ishida - who was already falling behind in terms of maturity and being a stereotypical “bad boy” in 6th grade - is strangely understandable. Don’t get me wrong - I find it absolutely despicable, but these are boys on the cusp of puberty. I think, at that age, you do and say things in a flurry of desperation and fear and a confusing concoction on emotions and ideas that are difficult for you to grasp. And let’s not forget that this was very true for Ishida himself, when he initially started bullying Nishimiya. I don’t want it to come across as though I’m excusing their behaviour in any way, but I can at least to a certain degree understand what a confusing and frightening thing it is to be at an age where other people’s opinions, having a high status and being accepted by those around you suddenly outweighs almost everything else. I think it makes it so that you can only see what you personally have to ‘gain’ by bullying someone, while remaining more or less blind to the actual consequences of it. In the case of Shimada, perhaps Ishida’s fall from grace was his opportunity to well and truly cut ties with Ishida, elevating himself in the process. Again, not fully comprehending the consequences such behaviour might lead to - until he, as a high schooler, was able to look back and understand, to some degree, that what he’d done was reprehensible, but having already drifted far enough from Ishida to be able to mend it properly. Those are just some of my thoughts. Bullying is such a complex matter. As is often the case when children try to figure out how to fit into this world. I’m just glad Ishida went to such lengths to redeem himself, truly understanding and readily admitting that he’d been wrong in 6th grade, and I can only hope that Shimada does the same.

  • @evolutiondl1492
    @evolutiondl1492 Год назад +4

    Some people seem to hate him but I thought Shimada was one of the most mature children in the whole show. When he was hanging out with Shimada and Hirose, he was the one who suggested that maybe it was time to stop breaking the rules and be serious about school, he would also suggest that Ishida was taking his bullying a bit too far. Without Shimada I don't think Ishida sees the errors of his way because Shimada was the one who started bullying Ishida, he's the reason he got isolated from the rest of the students. He's the one who gave Ishida a taste of his own medicine.
    You could say Shimada did 2 things wrong. 1) Bully Ishada 2) Not give Ishada an opportunity to prove he changed. The reason Shimada started bullying Ishida is because he was bullying kids and he is the main reason Shouko transferred schools. When they meet again Shimada doesn't change his attitude, I would say when Shouko left their school, Shimada decided not to hang out with him ever again.

    Another amazing character analysis Anime Dude!~ I'm really glad you made character analysis of Shimada. When watching throughout the movie he was completely mysterious, there wasn't much like shown his importance to Ishida's past and present of his life. It made myself hard to analyze him on the movie and yet even at the manga he was still mysterious but he was shown his importance of being a side character of the series. Overall I have seen again many people like him in real life, plus I may be part of it. He shows that he is a friend and will do somethings that are with you, but the actions are you to be blamed off not *us*. Through your analysis its noticeable that he may regret for bullying, blaming and leaving him off after that day happened. He may not say truly he is sorry but he shows that he is sorry by secretly hiding it with actions. He may regret the past yet he still had the time to change the future coming through to him.
    And also I'm also happy that you got 1,000 subscribers and that means a lot to us. Hoping till the end that you're the best (for me) to analyze characters. :D

    Honestly, koe no Katachi for me is the story of a young, honest, but misguided boy, who was forced to face the consequences of his actions in the most public and humiliating fashion, getting utterly defeated and destroyed emotionally and socially, and then rebuilding himself to be able to face the problems that he created head on, and with all of the sincerity that he can muster.
    Along with all of his past friends who fail to do so at every turn, and will probably even fail to do so until their time on this mortal plane is at an end.

    Shimada is similar to Sahara, he wants to be part of the group so he suppresses his true self to fit in. That means that he goes along with whatever Ishidia wants, because he wants Ishidia's approval and to be part of the group. But he grows resentful of this as his suggestions are constantly shot down by Ishidia, that's why when the class turns against Ishidia, he takes that opportunity to be the "leader" and then exacts revenge on Ishida.
    That's why he tells Ueno to mind her business, why he hides the fact that he saved Ishidia, and his statement about the Judges. His and Hirose's character growth about being assertive, saying what they truly feel instead of just following along. There was an imbalance of power in the relationship between the three of them, which is what caused their group to split up, because they were less like friends and more like a boss and his two followers.

    To be honest, I legitimately disliked Shimada and Hirose in the movie. I always felt like they were toying with Ishida from the very beginning for some reason. That was just the impression I got even though that probably wasn't the case and they may have really thought of him as a friend. I wish they had hinted at Shimada's cram school problems in the movie or even show the three drifting apart a little. Other then that I really enjoyed the movie and related to the main character on so many levels. A lot of people may think that the movie's portrayal of bullying and anxiety are exaggerated but as someone who has experienced it I can say that it hits very close to home for me.
    I went to a different middle school then my elementary school friends and met them all again in high school. They had changed so much... they didn't seem like the same bunch of lovable nerds I had grown so close to in elementary. In terms of appearances and interests I hadn't changed that much. I was still the same scrawny art and videogame loving geek I've always been, just a lot less hyper. But they all seemed so..... girly. Which isn't a bad thing but different from how I remembered them so I was very nervous about talking to them. I hope I'll summon up the courage to say hi to them before I graduate. Even if they aren't the same kids I knew when I was little, I'm still grateful for all the fun times we shared and all the stupid things we used to do and I only hope for the best for their futures. I just wish there was a way I could let them know that.
    Anyways.... that went on way longer than I expected. It was good to get that off my chest though and thanks for reading all that if you did! The video was great and I look forward to more quality anime related content from you in the future. ;)

    For all the people saying Shouya deserved to be bullied because he was a bully , STOP. First off , As someone who has been bullied literally from preschool all the way past high , I would NEVER wish the same on even the worst of my bullies. To be bullied is absolutely one of the worst feelings to go through and we were kids , kids did horrible things to each other because they don’t understand the scale of their actions, yes they should be punished but not in that way. For those who condone bullying when it’s happening to a bullying , you are just as bad. Bullying is not ok , no matter who it is. You should be ashamed for even saying that , there is no special circumstances. I’m disgusted by how many people are saying they are glad he went through that , he was a child. Him being bullied isn’t going to change what happen, it just means more people hurt. As they say , an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

    You do a fantastic job. This character, gosh hard to say - when he said "you have got to learn to mind your own business" - I'm trying to figure out where that came from. It could be a reflection on him; as he was always on the periphery zipping in to be the bug in people's ear on commenting on his perception to see how it plays out. It might suggest this practice sort of leaves the wreckage of things to others while leaving him unscathed when things played out badly. He knew when to take advantage of "the goings on" and when to toss people under the bus to save themselves. I'm not certain at all either.

    I think these characters are very human and it's easy to forget how young they are. They're in middle school when the film starts so they're still developing mentally. They're children so when they encounter someone who they view as a hindrance to their life of course they're going to react as children. There's multiple sides to each of these characters. I think Shoko was the one who matured the fastest because she decided to keep forgiving everyone and trying to see things from their perspective instead of just reacting with anger. I think Shimada just reacted like most middle schoolers would. Very immature and not willing to own up to his own mistakes but the film hints at the fact that he's grown from that experience and became a better person.

  • @ayasalah8382

    what i saw in shimada's character is:
    he had a strong set of rules to follow.like burdens on his shoulders unlike ishida.
    amazed by the amount of freedom ishida has.
    ishida is the leader for this amount of openness and for some characteristics he has as a result of that.
    shimada has inner envy within.wishes to be as free.as ignorant sometimes.
    he knows these things are wrong for he had a better education(may be family) still joins in bullying and enjoying it.
    he had took the lead once they covered the fact that shimada hirose and the rest participated in bullying nishimya.
    that was his chance to take the lead.
    he cares of his future and has a dream to follow. he has to keep his reputation.
    so he buries 'literally'any trace of the foul past
    including ishida as a whole if it needs.
    but he has this child within. missing the limited freedom he used to have.
    and it-in his mind- maybe is linked to ishida.

    I feel the same that, even though the film was 2 hours long, it still left out quite a lot. It could easily have been 3 hours and not been boring. I personally wanted to see more of Shoko's life beyond her suicide attempt. She apologises to Shoya for the pain she 'caused' but promises to help him live and then she's just, like, magically fine?
    I think it would have been more wholesome to see both Shoko and Shoya's path to accepting themselves and allowing themselves to be happy, not just Shoya. It was a great ending and redemption story, but I still think Shoko's story felt unfinished. She was such an integral part in the story but we never really see her as a main character, she's almost a plot device for a lot of the film. I'd have appreciated an extra 15/20 minutes of Shoya being helped by Shoko to learn to love herself and not see herself as an inconvenience and to enjoy being part of a friendship group. I appreciate that it happens, she seems happy enough at the end, but how did that happen? She went from suicidal to a social butterfly off-screen (she's part of the friendship group and going out with them and it seems perfectly natural for her to be there) and I'd love to know how that process happened. I get it's mainly Shoya's 'redemption arc' but still, it's weird to have two characters attempt suicide, both survive and then only show us how one of them turned it around. I'm sure it's more detailed in the manga that I do not have the time or patience to read, but it would have been nice to see Shoko's life going from suicide to acceptance and happiness. It just kinda happens in the background.

      Yeah I would love to see Nishimiya doing well. She was such an unpenetrable character, the fact she was deaf isolated her even more. Even her sister didn´t quite uderstand what she thinks, and Ueno hated her (among other things) for never being honest and hiding behind a fake smile. I really wanted to give her a hug and I would love to see her being able to open to people, love herself and stand up for herself. And I would love to watch that process. The anime is much more bitter because we didn´t have a chance to watch this
      I know Ueno was a bitch, but Nishimiya needed someone like her in her life, just a little less bitchy, or perhaps in other stage of her life

  • @wolfgirlholo62

    Congratulations on 1000 subs! You deserve it. Once again the thoroughness and uniqueness shows. Can't wait to see what's next! As for what I think about Shimada, I honestly feel like he followed the bullying because he didn't know how to walk away. Then he distances himself when he saw an opportunity. I don't feel like there needs to be reconciliation between the two because there is bad blood now. Not everything that is broken needs to be fixed, akd that's okay. But they don't have to be hostile towards each other. The texts where he put a "lol" in feel like he was just reinforcing how he wants to remain distant from Ishida. That also explains why he didn't want Ishida to know about Shimada saving him. He probably doesn't feel comfortable being close with him after all that's happened, and sees how Ishida feels the same way.

    • @TheAnimeDude
      @TheAnimeDude  7 лет назад +1

      wolfgirlholo62 The texts with the Lol were Hirose, the fat one. Shimada only put that he finished the sample and didn't even mention it. Sorry for that confusion. Haha.

    It's sad that ppl call him evil just bcoz he blamed shoya for shouko's bullying in middle school and forgot that he actually tried to stop ishida from bullying shouko in manga in the beginning. He also advised him to join cram school for his better future. But ishida instead made kazuki skip his classes. So, Both of them were bad influences to each other. Also, there's no proof that Kazuki was going to bully ishida that night he fell in river. The only thing we saw IS KAZUKI SAVING ISHIDA'S LIFE BY JUMPING IN THE RIVER. HE DESERVES SECOND CHANCE TOO LIKE ISHIDA DID. WE SAW ISHIDA SUFFERINGS THAT'S WHY WE FELT SYMPATHY FOR HIM BUT WE NEVER SAW KAZUKI'S SUFFERINGS THAT'S WHY PPL DON'T CARE ABOUT HIM UNFORTUNATELY. He's an interesting character and deserves redemption arc, it was good to see that Ishida wanted to clear misunderstandings between them in manga but writer never made that part.

    I suspect Kiesuke (the fat freind turned bully) had some closet resentments building up towards Shoya for a while but was to afraid to stand up for himself when they were "freinds".
    I haven't read the manga but in the film Shoya was always the one rough housing him as kids. We assumed they were both cool with it but Kiesuke is clearly out of shape which might indicate depression and a lack of self confidence. Overweight kids are often at the bottom of the schools social hierarchy. Young Shoya took advantage of this by being more physically aggressive with him (and maybe verberally too). Preying on a weaker kid to make himself feel more dominant.
    This is something that actually happens in unhealthy freindships in real life. Often someone who is lonely or weak will suck up being mistreated in a codependent relationship just so they can feel part of a group or have freinds just for the sake of having them. This is especially true with kids. This can build into closet anger and resentment overtime.
    To be fair, Shoya might not have realized that Keisuke was feeling this way and just assumed they were god pals, but he was so horrible in that time of his life that Keusuke might have been to scared of him to say anything.
    When Shoko appears Kiesuke joined in the bullying because he was just happy to no longer be Shoya main target. This was horrible for him to do buts it's real human behavior especially from someone who is pretty weak. There are cases of bullied kids becoming bullies themselves. He wanted to stay on Shoya good side who he feared and still a have group of freinds. Shoko being the new bottom of the school hierarchy was his way out.
    When the entire class turns on Shoya Kiesuke realized he didn't have to be freinds with someone who was being mean to him anymore. Now that Shoya was at the bottom of the class soical hierarchy he no longer feared him. Smelling blood, he quickly turns on Shoya and we see him rough house him in a similar way Shoya did to him earlier. All his build up anger started coming out at that point and he became a bully himself to a very confused Shoya who thought they were freinds.
    The reason why we see Keisuke write "lol" at Shoya fall (as this video showed me) is because unlike Kazuki, he still has a lot of anger directed at Shoya and still sees him as the mean freind that mistreated him. It also might have reminded him of when Shoya persured him to jump off the bridge which might of been a bad memory for him. Thus he couldn't help but see a little ironic karma. He still help save him because also trying to let the go of his own anger. Then again for all we know he might still be freinds with Kazuki because he still fears him and just wants to be on the good side of whoever is on the top of the social hierarchy.

      I totally agree. Maybe Hirose was too scared to stand up to him and I notice that Ishida was rougher on him. I also think Shimada might've been a little scared too to stand up to Ishida and get bullied in return. And when the right moment came to turn on Ishida, they both did.

  • @jim6480
    @jim6480 4 года назад +5

    I'm fairly conflicted with him honestly. On one hand he wasn't much different than Ishida in terms of bullying and might have been worse. The only explanation that I ever received is because of where I went to school but even then to me it seemed like it was something else entirely. To me its weird because it wasn't like I was the odd man out. We hung out a lot as a group and I connected to some of the other guys separately from the group. I haven't spoken to them since then and I really don't care, I have made much better friends over time, and like Ishida it doesn't matter to me if I ever make amends or figure out why it happened the way it happened. Maybe one day but I cherish my current friends more than them.

      Btw she (surprisingly) have dialogues as well, she's voiced by Hamaguchi Ayano in the movie (I'm assuming she's a new seiyuu), for a faceless character with some lines of dialogues, she somehow still have less screentime than Maria and Pedro (who have little to no line at all), a very intriguing character I'd say.

    My theory is that Shimada was afraid that he might get bullied himself if he were to stop bulling Shouko, and that would be why he tried to stop Shouya from bulling her, but still continued to bully Shouko when everyone else was. This was something that I went through myself in elementary. I also think that the reason he blamed everything on Shouya was either because he actually felt like it was all his fault because he tried to stop him, or he didn’t want to get in trouble with his parents that seem to be strict. I think that Shimada bullied Shouya because he didn’t want to be associated with him anymore because he might get in trouble with his parents if were to do so, and also bullying someone is an easy way to get someone away from you. After all, Shimada was still an asshole in elementary, but I can understand why he did the things he did.

    Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I have both read the manga, and then, watched the movie, but even after that, I couldn't quite come up with a convincing theory to understand why Shimada acted like he did.
    Your personal thoughts are really interesting, though I didn't have the feeling that Shimada honestly felt (even a bit of) regret when he met Ishida at the amusement park again (though, I'd like to regain faith in his 'humanity'). Why? Because his smile didn't reflect any sincerity for me.
    Sure, maybe he tried to apologize for what he did when he followed Ishida just before the fall in the pond scene, however I still don't get why he bullied Ishida when they were in Elementary school. If we admit that at some point, he didn't consider him a friend anymore, it still isn't enough a reason for his doing, at least to me. At first, I had thought that he wanted to get back at Ishida for all the 'pushing' he did towards Hirose and him (e.g. the courage test and the "forced" 'come play video games at my house' thing), although he understood that it was time for them to grow up. Likewise, Hirose also used the same wrestling(?) position to bully Ishida like Ishida had used to do to him.
    However, I still don't think that this alone justifies their acts.
    As someone in the comments section pointed out, why would Shimada somehow "go out of his way" to become what he himself criticized all along? Why would he bully if he said himself that Ishida should stop it? My guess so far is, as you said, the assumption that as his parents probably pressured him to study more, get better chances to go to a prestigious school and succeed in life, he may have let the stress build up to the point where he couldn't cope with it anymore. Thus he found a convenient way to release that stress by harassing Ishida. Which, btw, wouldn't be surprising since it's quite common in Japan.
    Maybe, the one thing that I can't accept is the fact that he seemed to be quite dull/weak as a character (despite of his intelligence, he didn't seem to play a big role in the former trio), he didn't stand out at all at first, but afterwards he somehow managed to become a "leading" figure in his class as he dragged all of Ishida's old friends on his side to bully Ishida. Furthermore, nobody dared to go against him (though Ueno didn't want to play a part in it, she was still kinda forced to write mean things on Ishida's table too). Like, did anyone see that coming? Either Shimada was a fake friend all along or he's just a really good manipulator and decided to "get real" as he got fed up with Ishida's childish play.
    Your video helped me get a better grasp of his point of view, but I feel like there's still a missing piece of the puzzle. Ofc, it was probably meant to be so by the mangaka, thus all of us trying to figure it out, yet I'm the type of person that likes when a story ends in a way where everything gets cleared out.
    Well, what do you think about it?
