    Don’t let people get to you. I also fly a nylon flag, and it RARELY comes down. Unless I have ample warning and the storm is bad enough, it stays up year round, through everything! They usually last about 12-16 months. For 18$ that’s great value.

    What people who did not live through that storm do not seem to realize is that by the time it hit here in Cedar Rapids it was the same intensity as Hurricane Katrina was when it came ashore in Louisiana in 2005 - equal to Category 4 hurricane, only we had virtually NO warning, what warning there was was about 20 - 30 min and could in no way convey how bad it was going to be. I grew up on the Gulf Coast and have been through hurricanes ... also been through tornados, never anything like this I was dazed as I saw a 90 ft tall cotton wood tree in my neighbors yard uprooted, my pear tree snapped off at the ground.

    • @69eddieD
      @69eddieD 4 года назад +1

      Yes, and the flooding is worse too.
      But storms like this are unusual in the Midwest. We get tornadoes, which can produce even higher winds than this, but the sustained winds don't last this long.
      We had a Derecho event a few years back where we had sustained 50-60 mph winds for around three days. Tom Skilling called it a "hurricane over land." He said it was highly unusual. It was certainly unpleasant and dangerous too. Even though the winds weren't that high, after a day or so a lot of damage to structures started happening. Shingles blew off, a porch partially collapsed and had to be demolished, siding flapped around until it tore off, etc. Trees started falling the second day. There was stuff blowing everywhere, all day.
      I've been in tornadoes, but you can't hide in the basement for three days. Most people still went to work! Driving was hazardous, and trucks weren't even on the road. There was debris on the expressway; stuff just kept blowing down.

      Actually hurricanes build up steadily this went from chill to 110-140 mph winds instantly a hurricanes I wall is what this was like this was on par with a car 4 hurricane my uncle lived in South Florida for Charlie and Andrew and he even said this was on par with Charlie. He even said that it could be considered worse because of the lack of warning. Again hurricanes are longer lasting but the actual intensity along with no warning made this storm very dangerous.

    • @PlancoandChill
      @PlancoandChill 4 года назад +2

      I agree. But in this case I think the warning was less. If I recall right (watching from states away) the outlook didnt put this one as powerful or long tracked as it came out. The emergency alerts went out like normal then came the bigger alerts telling people things had changed. At most people had only a few min to decide if this was a gusty thunderstorm or the monster it became. Even in it people kept openly marveling of how long it was taking to end.
      The Flag was defiantly not on the front of anyone's mind.

    Yeah, I'd seen drone footage of forests, woodlands, from this derecho, complete blowdowns, extending many, many acres. Normally, you'd expect to see soils trenching to half a yard or more, and complete roads/highways erasures, due to EFS5 tornadoes, but with this storm, the winds could be UNDER 150MPH, and COMBINE with LARGE-size ultra-ballistic hail, to erase roads/highways; to erase some hardened buildings; to absolutely poor livestock with "bullet" holes; and, the same for any human unfortunate to be caught outside, in this hell!

    This was just like a Hurricane eye wall hitting. Thankfully it only lasted a little while. Could you imagine living though this for hours and hours on end. Most Hurricanes only move about 7 to 5 mph.This storm was moving 75mph. A side note days right before this storm UFO spotters spotted UFOs in the area.

    The U.S. Flag Code states that: "The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed." If your flag is made of a material that is likely to be damaged by the elements, the code dictates that you do not fly it. If your flag is made of a material meant to withstand harsh weather, you may leave it out all the time.
